2. INIZI DEL REGNO DI SAUL
Sollevazione contro i Filistei
13 Saul aveva trent'anni quando cominciò a regnare e regnò vent'anni su Israele... 2 Egli si scelse tremila uomini da Israele: duemila stavano con Saul in Micmas e sul monte di Betel e mille stavano con Giònata a Gàbaa di Beniamino; rimandò invece il resto del popolo ciascuno alla sua tenda. 3 Allora Giònata sconfisse la guarigione dei Filistei che era in Gàbaa e i Filistei lo seppero subito. Ma Saul suonò la tromba in tutta la regione gridando: «Ascoltino gli Ebrei!». 4 Tutto Israele udì e corse la voce: «Saul ha battuto la guarnigione dei Filistei e ormai Israele s'è urtato con i Filistei». Il popolo si radunò dietro Saul a Gàlgala. 5 Anche i Filistei si radunarono per combattere Israele, con tremila carri e seimila cavalieri e una moltitudine numerosa come la sabbia che è sulla spiagga del mare. Così si mossero e posero il campo a Micmas a oriente di Bet-Aven. 6 Quando gli Israeliti si accorsero di essere in difficoltà, perché erano stretti dal nemico, cominciarono a nascondersi in massa nelle grotte, nelle macchie, fra le rocce, nelle fosse e nelle cisterne. 7 Alcuni Ebrei passarono oltre il Giordano nella terra di Gad e Gàlaad.
Rottura tra Samuele e Saul
Saul restava in Gàlgala e tutto il popolo che stava con lui era impaurito. 8 Aspettò tuttavia sette giorni secondo il tempo fissato da Samuele. Ma Samuele non arrivava a Gàlgala e il popolo si disperdeva lontano da lui. 9 Allora Saul diede ordine: «Preparatemi l'olocausto e i sacrifici di comunione». Quindi offrì l'olocausto. 10 Ed ecco, appena ebbe finito di offrire l'olocausto, giunse Samuele e Saul gli uscì incontro per salutarlo. 11 Samuele disse subito: «Che hai fatto?». Saul rispose: «Vedendo che il popolo si disperdeva lontano da me e tu non venivi al termine dei giorni fissati, mentre i Filistei si addensavano in Micmas, 12 ho detto: ora scenderanno i Filistei contro di me in Gàlgala mentre io non ho ancora placato il Signore. Perciò mi sono fatto ardito e ho offerto l'olocausto». 13 Rispose Samuele a Saul: «Hai agito da stolto, non osservando il comando che il Signore Dio tuo ti aveva imposto, perché in questa occasione il Signore avrebbe reso stabile il tuo regno su Israele per sempre. 14 Ora invece il tuo regno non durerà. Il Signore si è gia scelto un uomo secondo il suo cuore e lo costituirà capo del suo popolo, perché tu non hai osservato quanto ti aveva comandato il Signore». 15 Samuele poi si alzò e salì da Gàlgala per andarsene per la sua strada. Il resto del popolo salì dietro a Saul incontro ai guerrieri e vennero da Gàlgala a Gàbaa di Beniamino; Saul contò la gente che era rimasta con lui: erano seicento uomini.
Preparativi di guerra
16 Saul e Giònata e la gente rimasta con loro stavano a Gàbaa di Beniamino e i Filistei erano accampati in Micmas. 17 Dall'accampamento filisteo uscì una pattuglia d'assalto divisa in tre schiere: una si diresse sulla via di Ofra verso il paese di Suàl; 18 un'altra si diresse sulla via di Bet-Coron; la terza schiera si diresse sulla via del confine che sovrasta la valle di Zeboìm verso il deserto. 19 Allora non si trovava un fabbro in tutto il paese d'Israele: «Perché - dicevano i Filistei - gli Ebrei non fabbrichino spade o lance». 20 Così gli Israeliti dovevano sempre scendere dai Filistei per affilare chi il vomere, chi la zappa, chi la scure o la falce. 21 L'affilatura costava due terzi di siclo per i vomeri e le zappe e un terzo l'affilatura delle scuri e dei pungoli. 22 Nel giorno della battaglia, in tutta la gente che stava con Saul e Giònata, non si trovò in mano ad alcuno né spada né lancia. Si potè averne solo per Saul e suo figlio Giònata. 23 Intanto una guarnigione di Filistei era uscita verso il passo di Micmas.

Saul Fights the Philistines
13 Saul lived for one year and then became king, and when he had reigned for two years over Israel,[a] 2 Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in (A)Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in (B)Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent. 3 Jonathan defeated (C)the garrison of the Philistines that was (D)at Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul (E)blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear.” 4 And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.
5 And the Philistines mustered to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen and troops (F)like the sand on the seashore in multitude. They came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of (G)Beth-aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in trouble (for the people were hard pressed), the people hid themselves (H)in caves and in holes and in rocks and in tombs and in cisterns, 7 and some Hebrews crossed the fords of the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul was still at Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.
Saul's Unlawful Sacrifice
8 (I)He waited seven days, the time appointed by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the people were scattering from him. 9 So Saul said, “Bring the burnt offering here to me, and the peace offerings.” And he offered the burnt offering. 10 As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came. And Saul went out to meet him and greet him. 11 Samuel said, “What have you done?” And Saul said, “When I saw that the people were scattering from me, and that you did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines had mustered at Michmash, 12 I said, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the Lord.’ So I forced myself, and offered the burnt offering.” 13 And Samuel said to Saul, (J)“You have done foolishly. (K)You have not kept the command of the Lord your God, with which he commanded you. For then the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now (L)your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man (M)after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince[b] over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.” 15 And Samuel arose and went up from Gilgal. The rest of the people went up after Saul to meet the army; they went up from Gilgal[c] to (N)Gibeah of Benjamin.
And Saul numbered the people who were present with him, (O)about six hundred men. 16 And Saul and Jonathan his son and the people who were present with them stayed in (P)Geba of Benjamin, but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 17 And (Q)raiders came out of the camp of the Philistines in three companies. One company turned toward Ophrah, to the land of Shual; 18 another company turned toward (R)Beth-horon; and another company turned toward the border that looks down on the Valley of (S)Zeboim toward the wilderness.
19 (T)Now there was no blacksmith to be found throughout all the land of Israel, for the Philistines said, “Lest the Hebrews make themselves swords or spears.” 20 But every one of the Israelites went down to the Philistines to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, his axe, or his sickle,[d] 21 and the charge was two-thirds of a shekel[e] for the plowshares and for the mattocks, and a third of a shekel[f] for sharpening the axes and for setting the goads.[g] 22 So on the day of the battle (U)there was neither sword nor spear found in the hand of any of the people with Saul and Jonathan, but Saul and Jonathan his son had them. 23 And (V)the garrison of the Philistines went out to the (W)pass of (X)Michmash.
