9 Era un om din Beniamin, numit Chis(A), fiul lui Abiel, fiul lui Ţeror, fiul lui Becorat, fiul lui Afiah, fiul unui beniamit, un om tare şi voinic. 2 El avea un fiu cu numele Saul, tânăr şi frumos, mai frumos decât oricare din copiii lui Israel. Şi-i întrecea pe toţi în înălţime de la umăr(B) în sus. 3 Măgăriţele lui Chis, tatăl lui Saul, s-au rătăcit, şi Chis a zis fiului său Saul: „Ia cu tine o slugă, scoală-te şi du-te de caută măgăriţele.” 4 Saul a trecut prin muntele lui Efraim şi a străbătut ţara Şalişa(C) fără să le găsească; au trecut prin ţara Şaalim, şi nu erau acolo; au străbătut ţara lui Beniamin, şi nu le-au găsit. 5 Ajunseseră în ţara Ţuf, când Saul a zis slugii care îl însoţea: „Haide să ne întoarcem, ca nu cumva tatăl meu, lăsând măgăriţele, să fie îngrijorat de noi.” 6 Sluga i-a zis: „Iată că în cetatea aceasta este un om(D) al lui Dumnezeu, un om cu vază; tot ce spune(E) el nu se poate să nu se întâmple. Haidem la el dar; poate că ne va arăta drumul pe care trebuie să apucăm.” 7 Saul a zis slugii sale: „Dar dacă mergem acolo, ce să(F) aducem omului lui Dumnezeu? Căci nu mai avem merinde în saci şi n-avem niciun dar de adus omului lui Dumnezeu. Ce avem?” 8 Sluga a luat din nou cuvântul şi a zis lui Saul: „Uite, eu am la mine un sfert de siclu de argint; îl voi da omului lui Dumnezeu şi ne va arăta drumul.” 9 Odinioară, în Israel, când se ducea cineva să întrebe(G) pe Dumnezeu, zicea: „Haidem să mergem la văzător!” Căci acela care se numeşte azi proroc se numea odinioară văzător(H). 10 Saul a zis slugii: „Ai dreptate; haidem să mergem!” Şi s-au dus în cetatea unde era omul lui Dumnezeu. 11 Pe când se suiau ei spre cetate, au întâlnit nişte fete(I) care ieşiseră să scoată apă şi le-au zis: „Aici este văzătorul?” 12 Ele le-au răspuns: „Da, iată-l înaintea ta, dar du-te repede, astăzi(J) a venit în cetate, pentru că poporul aduce jertfă(K) pe înălţime. 13 Când veţi intra în cetate, îl veţi găsi înainte ca să se suie la locul înalt să mănânce, căci poporul nu mănâncă până nu vine el, fiindcă el trebuie să binecuvânteze jertfa; după aceea, mănâncă şi cei poftiţi. Suiţi-vă dar, căci acum îl veţi găsi.” 14 Şi s-au suit în cetate. Tocmai când intrau pe poarta cetăţii, au fost întâlniţi de Samuel, care ieşea să se suie pe înălţime. 15 Dar, cu o zi mai înainte de venirea lui Saul, Domnul(L) înştiinţase pe Samuel şi-i zisese: 16 „Mâine, la ceasul acesta, îţi voi trimite un om din ţara lui Beniamin şi să-l ungi(M) drept căpetenie a poporului Meu Israel. El va scăpa poporul Meu din mâna filistenilor, căci am căutat(N) cu îndurare spre poporul Meu, pentru că strigătul lui a ajuns până la Mine.” 17 Când a zărit Samuel pe Saul, Domnul i-a zis: „Iată(O) omul despre care ţi-am vorbit; el va domni peste poporul Meu.” 18 Saul s-a apropiat de Samuel la mijlocul porţii şi a zis: „Arată-mi, te rog, unde este casa văzătorului.” 19 Samuel a răspuns lui Saul: „Eu sunt văzătorul. Suie-te înaintea mea pe înălţime, şi veţi mânca astăzi cu mine. Mâine te voi lăsa să pleci şi-ţi voi spune tot ce se petrece în inima ta. 20 Nu te nelinişti de măgăriţele(P) pe care le-ai pierdut acum trei zile, căci s-au găsit. Şi pentru cine este păstrat(Q) tot ce este mai de preţ în Israel? Oare nu pentru tine şi pentru toată casa tatălui tău?” 21 Saul a răspuns: „Oare nu sunt eu beniamit(R), din una din cele mai mici(S) seminţii ale lui Israel? Şi familia(T) mea nu este cea mai mică dintre toate familiile din seminţia lui Beniamin? Pentru ce dar îmi vorbeşti astfel?” 22 Samuel a luat pe Saul şi pe sluga lui, i-a vârât în odaia de mâncare, le-a dat locul cel dintâi între cei poftiţi, care erau aproape treizeci de inşi. 23 Samuel a zis bucătarului: „Adu porţia pe care ţi-am dat-o când ţi-am zis: ‘Pune-o deoparte’.” 24 Bucătarul a dat spata(U) şi ce era pe ea şi a pus-o înaintea lui Saul. Şi Samuel a zis: „Iată ce a fost păstrat, pune-o înainte şi mănâncă, fiindcă pentru tine s-a păstrat când am poftit poporul.” Astfel, Saul a mâncat cu Samuel în ziua aceea. 25 S-au pogorât apoi de pe înălţime în cetate, şi Samuel a stat de vorbă cu Saul pe acoperişul(V) casei. 26 Apoi s-au sculat dis-de-dimineaţă, şi, în revărsatul zorilor, Samuel a chemat pe Saul de pe acoperiş şi a zis: „Scoală-te, şi te voi însoţi”. Saul s-a sculat şi au ieşit amândoi, el şi Samuel. 27 Când s-au pogorât la marginea cetăţii, Samuel a zis lui Saul: „Spune slugii tale să treacă înaintea noastră”. 3 Într-o zi, măgăriţele lui Chiş, tatăl lui Saul, s-au pierdut. Atunci Chiş i-a zis fiului său Saul: „Ia cu tine pe unul dintre slujitori şi duceţi-vă să căutaţi măgăriţele!“ 4 Au traversat ţinutul muntos al lui Efraim şi regiunea Şalişa fără să le găsească. După aceea, au traversat şi regiunea Şaalim, dar tot nu le-au găsit. Apoi au traversat şi teritoriul lui Beniamin fără a le găsi. 5 Când au ajuns în regiunea Ţuf, Saul i-a zis slujitorului său, care era cu el:
– Haide să ne întoarcem, ca nu cumva tatăl meu să fie mai degrabă îngrijorat pentru noi decât pentru măgăriţe!
6 Dar slujitorul i-a zis:
– Iată! În cetatea aceasta se află un om al lui Dumnezeu, un om respectat; tot ceea ce spune el se adevereşte. Să mergem acolo acum şi poate ne va spune pe ce drum să o luăm.
7 Saul i-a răspuns slujitorului său:
– Dacă mergem, ce am putea să-i ducem acelui om? Mâncare în saci nu mai este şi nu avem nici vreun dar pentru omul lui Dumnezeu. Deci ce avem?
8 Slujitorul i-a zis din nou lui Saul:
– Uite, am găsit la mine un sfert de şechel[a] de argint. Îl voi da omului lui Dumnezeu ca să ne spună pe ce drum să mergem.
9 Pe vremuri, în Israel, omul care mergea să-L întrebe pe Dumnezeu zicea că merge la văzător, deoarece cel care se numeşte astăzi profet, atunci se numea văzător.
10 Saul i-a răspuns slujitorului său:
– Bine ai spus! Hai să mergem!
Astfel au intrat în cetatea în care se afla omul lui Dumnezeu. 11 În timp ce urcau dealul spre cetate, au întâlnit nişte fete care ieşeau să scoată apă. Ei le-au întrebat:
– Este aici văzătorul?
12 Ele le-au răspuns:
– Este aici! Este chiar în faţa voastră. Grăbiţi-vă dar! A sosit în cetate chiar astăzi, deoarece poporul aduce o jertfă pe înălţime. 13 Imediat după ce veţi intra în cetate îl veţi găsi, chiar înainte de a urca pe înălţime să mănânce. Poporul nu mănâncă până nu vine el, fiindcă el trebuie să binecuvânteze jertfa, şi doar după aceea cei poftiţi mănâncă. Mergeţi chiar acum şi-l veţi găsi.
14 Ei au urcat în cetate. Cum au intrat în cetate, iată că Samuel venea înspre ei mergând către locul înalt. 15 Domnul Se descoperise lui Samuel cu o zi înainte ca Saul să vină şi-i spusese: 16 „Mâine, cam pe timpul acesta, am să trimit la tine un bărbat din teritoriul lui Beniamin. Să-l ungi drept conducător peste poporul Meu, Israel. El îl va elibera pe poporul Meu de sub puterea filistenilor. Şi aceasta fiindcă am privit spre poporul Meu, căci strigătul lui a ajuns până la Mine.“
17 Când Samuel l-a văzut pe Saul, Domnul i-a zis: „Iată bărbatul despre care ţi-am vorbit! El va domni peste poporul Meu!“ 18 Saul s-a apropiat de Samuel în dreptul porţii şi i-a zis:
– Spune-mi, te rog, unde se află casa văzătorului?
19 Samuel i-a răspuns:
– Eu sunt văzătorul. Urcă înaintea mea pe înălţime, căci astăzi vei mânca împreună cu mine. Dimineaţă te voi lăsa să pleci şi-ţi voi spune tot ceea ce se află în inima ta. 20 În ceea ce priveşte măgăriţele pe care le-ai pierdut cu trei zile în urmă, nu te îngrijora pentru ele căci au fost găsite. Însă către cine este îndreptată toată dorinţa lui Israel dacă nu către tine şi către întreaga ta familie?
21 Dar Saul i-a răspuns:
– Nu sunt eu oare un beniamit, din cea mai mică seminţie din Israel? Şi clanul meu nu este cel mai neînsemnat dintre toate clanurile seminţiei lui Beniamin? De ce îmi vorbeşti în felul acesta?
22 Atunci Samuel l-a luat pe Saul şi pe slujitorul său, i-a dus în sală[b] şi i-a aşezat în fruntea celor poftiţi, vreo treizeci la număr. 23 Samuel i-a zis bucătarului:
– Adu bucata de carne pe care ţi-am dat-o şi despre care ţi-am spus s-o pui deoparte!
24 Bucătarul a luat coapsa cu ce era pe ea şi a aşezat-o în faţa lui Saul. Samuel a zis:
– Aceasta a fost păstrată pentru tine. Mănâncă, pentru că am pus-o deoparte pentru tine de când am chemat poporul.
Astfel, în acea zi, Saul a mâncat împreună cu Samuel. 25 După aceea au coborât de pe înălţime în cetate, iar Samuel a stat de vorbă cu Saul pe acoperiş. 26 S-au trezit devreme, în revărsatul zorilor, iar Samuel l-a chemat pe Saul pe acoperiş, spunându-i:
– Scoală-te, căci urmează să te trimit acasă.
Saul s-a sculat şi a ieşit afară împreună cu Samuel. 27 În timp ce se îndreptau spre marginea cetăţii, Samuel i-a zis lui Saul:
– Spune-i slujitorului să meargă înaintea noastră; tu însă să te opreşti pentru că îţi voi face cunoscut Cuvântul lui Dumnezeu.
Şi slujitorul a făcut întocmai.

2 And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.
3 And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.
4 And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
5 And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.
6 And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.
7 Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
8 And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.
9 (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)
10 Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
11 And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?
12 And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
13 As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.
14 And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
15 Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.
19 And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
20 And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?
21 And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?
22 And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.
23 And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.
24 And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
25 And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.
26 And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
27 And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.

9 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was (A)Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of [a]power. 2 And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. (B)From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, “Please take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of (C)Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.
5 When they had come to the land of (D)Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let (E)us return, lest my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us.”
6 And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city (F)a man of God, and he is an honorable man; (G)all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”
7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, (H)what shall we bring the man? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”
8 And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have here at hand one-fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man (I)went [b]to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called (J)a seer.)
10 Then Saul said to his servant, [c]“Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
11 As they went up the hill to the city, (K)they met some young women going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”
12 And they answered them and said, “Yes, there he is, just ahead of you. Hurry now; for today he came to this city, because (L)there is a sacrifice of the people today (M)on the high place. 13 As soon as you come into the city, you will surely find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now therefore, go up, for about this time you will find him.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they were coming into the city, there was Samuel, coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
15 (N)Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear the day before Saul came, saying, 16 “Tomorrow about this time (O)I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, (P)and you shall anoint him [d]commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have (Q)looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
17 So when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, (R)“There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people.” 18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me, where is the seer’s house?”
19 Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 But as for (S)your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And [e]on whom (T)is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father’s house?”
21 And Saul answered and said, (U)“Am I not a Benjamite, of the (V)smallest of the tribes of Israel, and (W)my family the least of all the families of the [f]tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?”
22 Now Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and had them sit in the place of honor among those who were invited; there were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it apart.’ ” 24 So the cook took up (X)the thigh with its upper part and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here it is, what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat; for until this time it has been kept for you, since I said I invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
25 When they had come down from the high place into the city, [g]Samuel spoke with Saul on (Y)the top of the house. 26 They arose early; and it was about the dawning of the day that Samuel called to Saul on the top of the house, saying, “Get up, that I may send you on your way.” And Saul arose, and both of them went outside, he and Samuel.

27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here [h]awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.”
