Saul Anointed King
9 There was a prominent man of Benjamin named Kish(A) son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, son of a Benjaminite. 2 He had a son named Saul, an impressive young man.(B) There was no one more impressive among the Israelites than he. He stood a head taller than anyone else.[a](C)
3 One day the donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off. Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go look for the donkeys.” 4 Saul and his servant went through the hill country of Ephraim(D) and then through the region of Shalishah,(E) but they didn’t find them. They went through the region of Shaalim(F)—nothing. Then they went through the Benjaminite region but still didn’t find them.
5 When they came to the land of Zuph,(G) Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come on, let’s go back, or my father will stop worrying about the donkeys and start worrying about us.”(H)
6 “Look,” the servant said, “there’s a man of God(I) in this city who is highly respected; everything he says is sure to come true.(J) Let’s go there now. Maybe he’ll tell us which way we should go.”(K)
7 “Suppose we do go,” Saul said to his servant, “what do we take the man? The food from our packs is gone, and there’s no gift to take to the man of God.(L) What do we have?”
8 The servant answered Saul, “Here, I have a little[b] silver. I’ll give it to the man of God, and he will tell us which way we should go.”
9 Formerly in Israel, a man who was going to inquire of God would say, “Come, let’s go to the seer,” for the prophet of today was formerly called the seer.(M)
10 “Good,” Saul replied to his servant. “Come on, let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was. 11 As they were climbing the hill to the city, they found some young women coming out to draw water(N) and asked, “Is the seer here?”
12 The women answered, “Yes, he is ahead of you. Hurry, he just now entered the city, because there’s a sacrifice(O) for the people at the high place(P) today. 13 As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes to the high place to eat. The people won’t eat until he comes because he must bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests can eat. Go up immediately—you can find him now.” 14 So they went up toward the city.
Saul and his servant were entering the city when they saw Samuel coming toward them on his way to the high place. 15 Now the day before Saul’s arrival, the Lord had informed Samuel,(Q) 16 “At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over my people Israel.(R) He will save them from the Philistines because I have seen the affliction of my people,(S) for their cry has come to me.” 17 When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man I told you about;(T) he will govern my people.”
18 Saul approached Samuel in the city gate and asked, “Would you please tell me where the seer’s house is?”
19 “I am the seer,” Samuel answered.[c] “Go up ahead of me to the high place and eat with me today. When I send you off in the morning, I’ll tell you everything that’s in your heart. 20 As for the donkeys that wandered away from you three days ago,(U) don’t worry about them because they’ve been found. And who does all Israel desire(V) but you and all your father’s family?”
21 Saul responded, “Am I not a Benjaminite(W) from the smallest of Israel’s tribes and isn’t my clan the least important of all the clans of the Benjaminite tribe?(X) So why have you said something like this to me?”
22 Samuel took Saul and his servant, brought them to the banquet hall, and gave them a place at the head of the thirty[d] or so men who had been invited. 23 Then Samuel said to the cook, “Get the portion of meat that I gave you and told you to set aside.”
24 The cook picked up the thigh(Y) and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Notice that the reserved piece is set before you. Eat it because it was saved for you for this solemn event at the time I said, ‘I’ve invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day. 25 Afterward, they went down from the high place to the city, and Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.[e](Z)
26 They got up early, and just before dawn, Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get up, and I’ll send you on your way!” Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went outside. 27 As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I’ll reveal the word of God to you.” So the servant went on.

9 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was (A)Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of [a]power. 2 And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. (B)From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.
3 Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, “Please take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” 4 So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of (C)Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.
5 When they had come to the land of (D)Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let (E)us return, lest my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us.”
6 And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city (F)a man of God, and he is an honorable man; (G)all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”
7 Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, (H)what shall we bring the man? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”
8 And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have here at hand one-fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” 9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man (I)went [b]to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called (J)a seer.)
10 Then Saul said to his servant, [c]“Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.
11 As they went up the hill to the city, (K)they met some young women going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”
12 And they answered them and said, “Yes, there he is, just ahead of you. Hurry now; for today he came to this city, because (L)there is a sacrifice of the people today (M)on the high place. 13 As soon as you come into the city, you will surely find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now therefore, go up, for about this time you will find him.” 14 So they went up to the city. As they were coming into the city, there was Samuel, coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
15 (N)Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear the day before Saul came, saying, 16 “Tomorrow about this time (O)I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, (P)and you shall anoint him [d]commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have (Q)looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
17 So when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, (R)“There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people.” 18 Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me, where is the seer’s house?”
19 Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart. 20 But as for (S)your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And [e]on whom (T)is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father’s house?”
21 And Saul answered and said, (U)“Am I not a Benjamite, of the (V)smallest of the tribes of Israel, and (W)my family the least of all the families of the [f]tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?”
22 Now Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and had them sit in the place of honor among those who were invited; there were about thirty persons. 23 And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it apart.’ ” 24 So the cook took up (X)the thigh with its upper part and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here it is, what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat; for until this time it has been kept for you, since I said I invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.
25 When they had come down from the high place into the city, [g]Samuel spoke with Saul on (Y)the top of the house. 26 They arose early; and it was about the dawning of the day that Samuel called to Saul on the top of the house, saying, “Get up, that I may send you on your way.” And Saul arose, and both of them went outside, he and Samuel.

27 As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here [h]awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.”

Saul. 1 There was a powerful man from Benjamin named Kish, who was the son of Abiel, son of Zeror, son of Becorath, son of Aphiah, a Benjaminite.(A) 2 He had a son named Saul, who was a handsome young man. There was no other Israelite more handsome than Saul; he stood head and shoulders above the people.(B)
The Lost Donkeys. 3 Now the donkeys of Saul’s father, Kish, had wandered off. Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the servants with you and go out and hunt for the donkeys.” 4 So they went through the hill country of Ephraim, and through the land of Shalishah. Not finding them there, they continued through the land of Shaalim without success. They also went through the land of Benjamin, but they failed to find the animals. 5 When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, “Come, let us turn back, lest my father forget about the donkeys and become anxious about us.” 6 The servant replied, “Listen! There is a man of God in this city, a man held in high esteem; everything he says comes true. Let us go there now! Perhaps he can advise us about the journey we have undertaken.” 7 (C)But Saul said to his servant, “If we go, what can we offer the man? The food in our bags has run out; we have no present to give the man of God. What else do we have?” 8 Again the servant answered Saul, “I have a quarter shekel of silver.[a] If I give that to the man of God, he will advise us about the journey.” 9 (D)(In former times in Israel, anyone who went to consult God used to say, “Come, let us go to the seer.” For the one who is now called prophet was formerly called seer.) 10 Saul then said to his servant, “You are right! Come on, let us go!” So they headed toward the city where the man of God lived.
Meeting the Young Women. 11 (E)As they were going up the path to the city, they met some young women coming out to draw water and they asked them, “Is the seer in town?” 12 (F)The young women answered, “Yes, there—straight ahead. Hurry now; just today he came to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on the high place.[b] 13 When you enter the city, you may reach him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he arrives; only after he blesses the sacrifice will the invited guests eat. Go up immediately, for you should find him right now.”
Saul Meets Samuel. 14 So they went up to the city. As they entered it—there was Samuel coming toward them on his way to the high place. 15 The day before Saul’s arrival, the Lord had revealed to Samuel:(G) 16 At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin whom you are to anoint as ruler of my people Israel. He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. I have looked upon my people; their cry has come to me.(H) 17 When Samuel caught sight of Saul, the Lord assured him: This is the man I told you about; he shall govern my people. 18 Saul met Samuel in the gateway and said, “Please tell me where the seer lives.” 19 Samuel answered Saul: “I am the seer. Go up ahead of me to the high place and eat with me today. In the morning, before letting you go, I will tell you everything on your mind. 20 As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not worry about them, for they have been found. Whom should Israel want if not you and your father’s family?” 21 Saul replied: “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the smallest of the tribes of Israel,[c] and is not my clan the least among the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why say such things to me?”(I)
The Meal.[d] 22 Samuel then took Saul and his servant and brought them into the room. He seated them at the head of the guests, of whom there were about thirty. 23 He said to the cook, “Bring the portion I gave you and told you to put aside.” 24 So the cook took up the leg and what went with it, and placed it before Saul. Samuel said: “This is a reserved portion that is set before you. Eat, for it was kept for you until this time; I explained that I was inviting some guests.” Thus Saul dined with Samuel that day. 25 When they came down from the high place into the city, a mattress was spread for Saul on the roof, 26 and he slept there.
Saul’s Anointing. At daybreak Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get up, and I will send you on your way.” Saul got up, and he and Samuel went outside the city together. 27 As they were approaching the edge of the town, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us, but you stay here for a moment, that I may give you a word from God.”

Saul receives the part of the sacrificed animal reserved for the priest and his family, perhaps the sheep’s fat tail. Legal texts (Ex 29:22; Lv 3:9; 7:3–4) require the priest to burn this portion of the sheep on the altar.

2 Der hatte einen Sohn mit Namen Saul; der war ein junger, schöner Mann, und war kein schönerer unter den Kindern Israel, eines Hauptes länger denn alles Volk.
3 Es hatte aber Kis, der Vater Sauls, seine Eselinnen verloren; und er sprach zu seinem Sohn Saul: Nimm der Knechte einen mit dir, mache dich auf, gehe hin und suche die Eselinnen.
4 Und sie gingen durch das Gebirge Ephraim und durch das Land Salisa, und fanden sie nicht; sie gingen durch das Land Saalim, und sie waren nicht da; sie gingen durch das Land Benjamin, und fanden sie nicht.
5 Da sie aber kamen in das Land Zuph, sprach Saul zu dem Knecht, der mit ihm war: Komm, laß uns wieder heimgehen; mein Vater möchte von den Eselinnen lassen und um uns sorgen.
6 Er aber sprach: Siehe, es ist ein berühmter Mann Gottes in dieser Stadt; alles, was er sagt, das geschieht. Nun laß uns dahin gehen; vielleicht sagt er uns unsern Weg, den wir gehen.
7 Saul aber sprach zu seinem Knechte: Wenn wir schon hingehen, was bringen wir dem Mann? Denn das Brot ist dahin aus unserm Sack; so haben wir sonst keine Gabe, die wir dem Mann Gottes bringen. Was haben wir?
8 Der Knecht antwortete Saul wieder und sprach: Siehe, ich habe ein viertel eines Silberlings bei mir; das wollen wir dem Mann Gottes geben, daß er uns unsern Weg sage.
9 (Vorzeiten in Israel, wenn man ging, Gott zu fragen, sprach man: Kommt, laßt uns gehen zu dem Seher! Denn die man jetzt Propheten heißt, die hieß man vorzeiten Seher.)
10 Saul sprach zu seinem Knecht: Du hast wohl geredet; komm laß uns gehen! Und da sie hingingen zu der Stadt, da der Mann Gottes war,
11 und zur Stadt hinaufstiegen, fanden sie Dirnen, die herausgingen, Wasser zu schöpfen. Zu denselben sprachen sie: Ist der Seher hier?
12 Sie antworteten ihnen und sprachen: Ja, siehe, da ist er; eile, denn er ist heute in die Stadt gekommen, weil das Volk heute zu opfern hat auf der Höhe.
13 Wenn ihr in die Stadt kommt, so werdet ihr ihn finden, ehe denn er hinaufgeht auf die Höhe, zu essen. Denn das Volk wird nicht essen, bis er komme, sintemal er segnet das Opfer; darnach essen die, so geladen sind. Darum geht hinauf, denn jetzt werdet ihr ihn eben antreffen.
14 Und da sie hinauf zur Stadt kamen und in die Stadt eintraten, siehe, da ging Samuel heraus, ihnen entgegen, und wollte auf die Höhe gehen.
15 Aber der HERR hatte Samuels Ohren offenbart einen Tag zuvor, ehe denn Saul kam, und gesagt:
16 Morgen um diese Zeit will ich einen Mann zu dir senden aus dem Lande Benjamin; den sollst du zum Fürsten salben über mein Volk Israel, daß er mein Volk erlöse von der Philister Hand. Denn ich habe mein Volk angesehen, und sein Geschrei ist vor mich gekommen.
17 Da nun Samuel Saul ansah, antwortete ihm der HERR: Siehe, das ist der Mann, von dem ich dir gesagt habe, daß er über mein Volk herrsche.
18 Da trat Saul zu Samuel unter dem Tor und sprach: Sage mir, wo ist hier des Sehers Haus?
19 Samuel antwortete Saul wieder und sprach: Ich bin der Seher. Gehe vor mir hinauf auf die Höhe, denn ihr sollt heute mit mir essen; morgen will ich dich lassen gehen, und alles, was in deinem Herzen ist, will ich dir sagen.
20 Und um die Eselinnen, die du vor drei Tagen verloren hast, bekümmere dich jetzt nicht: sie sind gefunden. Und wes wird sein alles, was das Beste ist in Israel? Wird's nicht dein und deines Vaters ganzen Hauses sein?
21 Saul antwortete: Bin ich nicht ein Benjamiter und von einem der geringsten Stämme Israels, und mein Geschlecht das kleinste unter allen Geschlechtern der Stämme Benjamin? Warum sagst du denn mir solches?
22 Samuel aber nahm Saul und seinen Knecht und führte sie in den Speisesaal und setzte sie obenan unter die, so geladen waren; der waren bei dreißig Mann.
23 Und Samuel sprach zu dem Koch: Gib her das Stück, das ich dir gab und befahl, du solltest es bei dir behalten.
24 Da trug der Koch eine Schulter auf und was daranhing. Und er legte es Saul vor und sprach: Siehe, das ist übrig; lege vor dich und iß; denn es ist für dich aufbehalten eben auf diese Zeit, da ich das Volk lud. Also aß Saul mit Samuel des Tages.
25 Und da sie hinabgegangen waren von der Höhe zur Stadt, redete er mit Saul auf dem Dache.
26 Und sie standen früh auf; und da die Morgenröte aufging, rief Samuel dem Saul auf dem Dach und sprach: Auf! daß ich dich gehen lasse. Und Saul machte sich auf, und die beiden gingen miteinander hinaus, er und Samuel.
27 Und da sie kamen hinab an der Stadt Ende, sprach Samuel zu Saul: Sage dem Knecht, daß er uns vorangehe (und er ging voran); du aber stehe jetzt still, daß ich dir kundtue, was Gott gesagt hat.
