Israel demands a king
8 Now when Samuel got old, he appointed his sons to serve as Israel’s judges. 2 The name of his oldest son was Joel; the name of the second was Abijah. They served as judges in Beer-sheba. 3 But Samuel’s sons didn’t follow in his footsteps. They tried to turn a profit, they accepted bribes, and they perverted justice.
4 So all the Israelite elders got together and went to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “Listen. You are old now, and your sons don’t follow in your footsteps. So appoint us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.” 6 It seemed very bad to Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” so he prayed to the Lord.
7 The Lord answered Samuel, “Comply with the people’s request—everything they ask of you—because they haven’t rejected you. No, they’ve rejected me as king over them. 8 They are doing to you only what they’ve been doing to me[a] from the day I brought them out of Egypt to this very minute, abandoning me and worshipping other gods. 9 So comply with their request, but give them a clear warning, telling them how the king will rule over them.”[b]
10 Then Samuel explained everything the Lord had said to the people who were asking for a king. 11 “This is how the king will rule over you,” Samuel said:
“He will take your sons, and will use them for his chariots and his cavalry and as runners for his chariot. 12 He will use them as his commanders of troops of one thousand and troops of fifty, or to do his plowing and his harvesting, or to make his weapons or parts for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, or bakers. 14 He will take your best fields, vineyards, and olive groves and give them to his servants. 15 He will give one-tenth of your grain and your vineyards to his officials and servants. 16 He will take your male and female servants, along with the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys, and make them do his work. 17 He will take one-tenth of your flocks, and then you yourselves will become his slaves! 18 When that day comes, you will cry out because of the king you chose for yourselves, but on that day the Lord won’t answer you.”
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel and said, “No! There must be a king over us 20 so we can be like all the other nations. Our king will judge us and lead us and fight our battles.”
21 Samuel listened to everything the people said and repeated it directly to the Lord. 22 Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Comply with their request. Give them a king.”
Samuel then told the Israelite people, “Go back, each of you, to your own hometown.”

8 Khi về già, ông Sa-mu-ên cho các con trai mình lãnh đạo và xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. 2 Người con trưởng tên Giô-ên, và người con thứ tên A-bi-gia; cả hai điều hành việc xét xử tại Bê-e Sê-ba. 3 Nhưng các con không noi gương cha mình; chúng tham tiền, ăn hối lộ và bóp méo công lý.
4 Do đó, tất cả các trưởng lão dân Y-sơ-ra-ên tụ họp lại, cùng nhau đến nhà ông Sa-mu-ên tại Ra-ma. 5 Họ thưa với ông: “Ông đã cao tuổi, mà các con ông lại không noi theo gương ông. Vậy xin ông lập cho chúng tôi một vua để cai trị chúng tôi, y như tất cả các dân tộc khác đều có vua cai trị.”
6 Ông Sa-mu-ên rất buồn khi nghe họ xin một vua. Ông liền cầu nguyện với CHÚA. 7 CHÚA đáp lời ông: “Con hãy nghe theo mọi lời chúng xin. Chúng không gạt bỏ con đâu, nhưng chúng gạt bỏ Ta, không cho Ta làm vua chúng nữa. 8 Từ ngày Ta giải cứu chúng ra khỏi xứ Ai-cập cho đến nay, chúng luôn luôn từ bỏ Ta và thờ lạy các tà thần; bây giờ chúng đối xử với con y như chúng đối xử với Ta. 9 Vậy bây giờ, con cứ nghe theo lời chúng, nhưng con phải nhớ cảnh cáo chúng, cho chúng biết rõ những quyền lợi mà bất kỳ vua nào cai trị chúng cũng đòi hỏi.”
Quyền Lợi Của Vua
10 Ông Sa-mu-ên thuật lại mọi lời CHÚA phán dạy cho những người xin ông lập vua cho họ. 11 Ông khuyến cáo họ: “Bất kỳ một vua nào cai trị anh chị em cũng sẽ đòi hỏi những quyền lợi như sau. Con trai anh chị em sẽ bị bắt lính, một số sẽ đánh xe chiến mã, một số cưỡi ngựa chiến, một số chạy bộ trước xe chiến mã của vua. 12 Vua sẽ lập một số lên làm quan, chỉ huy 1,000 người, hoặc 50 người. Một số sẽ cày ruộng cho vua, gặt lúa cho vua. Một số sẽ rèn vũ khí chiến tranh, một số khác lo trang bị xe chiến mã. 13 Vua sẽ bắt con gái anh chị em pha chế dầu thơm, hoặc nấu ăn, hoặc nướng bánh. 14 Đồng ruộng, vườn nho, vườn ô-liu tốt nhất của anh chị em, vua sẽ lấy phân phát cho cận thần. 15 Vua sẽ lấy một phần mười lúa thóc và huê lợi vườn nho của anh chị em mà phát cho các quan trong triều và cận thần của vua. 16 Vua sẽ bắt tôi trai tớ gái, các thanh niên mạnh khỏe nhất[a] và mấy con lừa của anh chị em làm việc cho vua. 17 Vua cũng sẽ lấy một phần mười bầy chiên dê của anh chị em. Tóm lại, chính anh chị em sẽ làm tôi mọi cho vua. 18 Đến lúc ấy, anh chị em sẽ than khóc với CHÚA về vua mà anh chị em đã chọn cho mình, nhưng Ngài sẽ không đáp lời anh chị em kêu cầu.”
19 Nhưng dân chúng không chịu nghe theo lời khuyến cáo của ông Sa-mu-ên. Họ đáp: “Mặc kệ. Chúng tôi muốn có vua. 20 Chúng tôi muốn giống như tất cả các dân tộc khác, có vua cai trị, cầm đầu chúng tôi khi ra trận, và đánh giặc cho chúng tôi.”
21 Ông Sa-mu-ên nghe mọi điều chúng nói xong liền trình lên CHÚA. 22 CHÚA bảo ông: “Con cứ nghe theo lời chúng, lập cho chúng một vua.” Ông Sa-mu-ên bảo dân Y-sơ-ra-ên: “Anh chị em ai nấy hãy trở về thành mình.”

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
