Israel pide rey
8 Cuando Samuel envejeció, nombró como caudillos a sus hijos para que guiaran al pueblo de Israel. 2 Su primogénito se llamaba Joel, y su segundo hijo se llamaba Abías. Los dos eran caudillos en Berseba, 3 pero no siguieron el ejemplo de su padre sino que se dejaron llevar por la avaricia, pues aceptaban sobornos y corrompieron la impartición de justicia. 4 Por eso todos los ancianos israelitas fueron a Ramá para hablar con Samuel, 5 y le dijeron:
«Es un hecho que tú ya eres viejo, y que tus hijos no siguen tu ejemplo. Por lo tanto, escógenos un rey, como lo tienen todas las naciones,(A) para que nos gobierne.»
6 Pero a Samuel no le agradó esta propuesta de dar al pueblo un rey que lo gobernara; entonces oró al Señor, 7 y el Señor le dijo:
«Atiende todas las peticiones que te haga el pueblo. No te han rechazado a ti, sino a mí, pues no quieren que yo reine sobre ellos. 8 Están haciendo contigo lo que han hecho conmigo desde que los saqué de Egipto: me están dejando para ir y servir a otros dioses. 9 Tú, atiende sus peticiones, pero aclárales todos los inconvenientes, y muéstrales cómo los tratará quien llegue a ser su rey.»
10 Samuel comunicó al pueblo que pedía un rey todo lo que el Señor había dicho. 11 Les dijo:
«El rey que ustedes ahora piden les quitará a sus hijos para ponerlos como soldados en sus carros de guerra; unos serán jinetes de su caballería, e irán abriéndole paso a su carruaje; 12 a otros los pondrá al mando de mil soldados, y a otros al mando de cincuenta soldados; a otros los pondrá a labrar sus campos y a levantar sus cosechas, y a otros los pondrá a fabricar sus armas y los pertrechos de sus carros de guerra. 13 También les quitará a sus hijas, para convertirlas en perfumistas, cocineras y panaderas. 14 Además, les quitará sus mejores tierras, y sus viñedos y olivares, y todo eso se lo entregará a sus sirvientes. 15 Les quitará también la décima parte de sus granos y de sus viñedos para pagarles a sus oficiales y a sus sirvientes. 16 Les quitará a sus siervos y siervas, y sus mejores jóvenes, y sus asnos y bueyes, para que trabajen para él. 17 También les exigirá la décima parte de sus rebaños, y ustedes pasarán a ser sus sirvientes. 18 El día que ustedes elijan su rey, lo van a lamentar; pero el Señor no les responderá.»
19 El pueblo no le hizo caso a Samuel, sino que dijo:
«No será así. A como dé lugar, tendremos un rey. 20 Así seremos como todas las naciones. Y nuestro rey nos gobernará, y saldrá al frente de nosotros y presentará batalla por nosotros.»
21 Samuel oyó todo lo que decía el pueblo, y se lo hizo saber al Señor. 22 Y el Señor le respondió:
«Atiende su petición, y ponles un rey que los gobierne.»
Entonces Samuel les pidió a los israelitas que regresara cada uno a su ciudad.

8 Aconteció que habiendo Samuel envejecido, puso a sus hijos por jueces sobre Israel. 2 Y el nombre de su hijo primogénito fue Joel, y el nombre del segundo, Abías; y eran jueces en Beerseba. 3 Pero no anduvieron los hijos por los caminos de su padre, antes se volvieron tras la avaricia, dejándose sobornar y pervirtiendo el derecho.
4 Entonces todos los ancianos de Israel se juntaron, y vinieron a Ramá para ver a Samuel, 5 y le dijeron: He aquí tú has envejecido, y tus hijos no andan en tus caminos; por tanto, constitúyenos ahora un rey que nos juzgue, como tienen todas las naciones.(A) 6 Pero no agradó a Samuel esta palabra que dijeron: Danos un rey que nos juzgue. Y Samuel oró a Jehová. 7 Y dijo Jehová a Samuel: Oye la voz del pueblo en todo lo que te digan; porque no te han desechado a ti, sino a mí me han desechado, para que no reine sobre ellos. 8 Conforme a todas las obras que han hecho desde el día que los saqué de Egipto hasta hoy, dejándome a mí y sirviendo a dioses ajenos, así hacen también contigo. 9 Ahora, pues, oye su voz; mas protesta solemnemente contra ellos, y muéstrales cómo les tratará el rey que reinará sobre ellos.
10 Y refirió Samuel todas las palabras de Jehová al pueblo que le había pedido rey. 11 Dijo, pues: Así hará el rey que reinará sobre vosotros: tomará vuestros hijos, y los pondrá en sus carros y en su gente de a caballo, para que corran delante de su carro; 12 y nombrará para sí jefes de miles y jefes de cincuentenas; los pondrá asimismo a que aren sus campos y sieguen sus mieses, y a que hagan sus armas de guerra y los pertrechos de sus carros. 13 Tomará también a vuestras hijas para que sean perfumadoras, cocineras y amasadoras. 14 Asimismo tomará lo mejor de vuestras tierras, de vuestras viñas y de vuestros olivares, y los dará a sus siervos. 15 Diezmará vuestro grano y vuestras viñas, para dar a sus oficiales y a sus siervos. 16 Tomará vuestros siervos y vuestras siervas, vuestros mejores jóvenes, y vuestros asnos, y con ellos hará sus obras. 17 Diezmará también vuestros rebaños, y seréis sus siervos. 18 Y clamaréis aquel día a causa de vuestro rey que os habréis elegido, mas Jehová no os responderá en aquel día.
19 Pero el pueblo no quiso oír la voz de Samuel, y dijo: No, sino que habrá rey sobre nosotros; 20 y nosotros seremos también como todas las naciones, y nuestro rey nos gobernará, y saldrá delante de nosotros, y hará nuestras guerras. 21 Y oyó Samuel todas las palabras del pueblo, y las refirió en oídos de Jehová. 22 Y Jehová dijo a Samuel: Oye su voz, y pon rey sobre ellos. Entonces dijo Samuel a los varones de Israel: Idos cada uno a vuestra ciudad.

Israel Demands a King
8 Now it came to pass when Samuel was (A)old that he (B)made his (C)sons judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. 3 But his sons (D)did not walk in his ways; they turned aside (E)after dishonest gain, (F)took bribes, and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, 5 and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (G)make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”
6 But the thing (H)displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel (I)prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for (J)they have not rejected you, but (K)they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and (L)show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, (M)“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your (N)sons and appoint them for his own (O)chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will (P)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And (Q)he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest [a]young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord (R)will not hear you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless the people (S)refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be (T)like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. 22 So the Lord said to Samuel, (U)“Heed their voice, and make them a king.”
And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”

8 When Samuel grew old, he appointed(A) his sons as Israel’s leaders.[a] 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,(B) and they served at Beersheba.(C) 3 But his sons(D) did not follow his ways. They turned aside(E) after dishonest gain and accepted bribes(F) and perverted(G) justice.
4 So all the elders(H) of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.(I) 5 They said to him, “You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king(J) to lead[b](K) us, such as all the other nations(L) have.”
6 But when they said, “Give us a king(M) to lead us,” this displeased(N) Samuel; so he prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord told him: “Listen(O) to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,(P) but they have rejected me as their king.(Q) 8 As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking(R) me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you. 9 Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know(S) what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.”
10 Samuel told(T) all the words of the Lord to the people who were asking him for a king. 11 He said, “This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take(U) your sons and make them serve(V) with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.(W) 12 Some he will assign to be commanders(X) of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your(Y) fields and vineyards(Z) and olive groves and give them to his attendants.(AA) 15 He will take a tenth(AB) of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants. 16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[c] and donkeys he will take for his own use. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves. 18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer(AC) you in that day.(AD)”
19 But the people refused(AE) to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want(AF) a king(AG) over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations,(AH) with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated(AI) it before the Lord. 22 The Lord answered, “Listen(AJ) to them and give them a king.”
Then Samuel said to the Israelites, “Everyone go back to your own town.”
