Israel Demands a King
8 Now it came about, when Samuel was old, that (A)he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. 2 The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judging in (B)Beersheba. 3 His sons, however, did not walk in his ways but turned aside after dishonest gain, and they (C)took bribes and perverted justice.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at (D)Ramah; 5 and they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now (E)appoint us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6 But the matter was [a](F)displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And (G)Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people regarding all that they say to you, because (H)they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being King over them. 8 Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day—in that they have abandoned Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you as well. 9 Now then, listen to their voice; (I)however, you shall warn them strongly and tell them of (J)the [b]practice of the king who will reign over them.”
Warning concerning a King
10 So Samuel spoke all the words of the Lord to (K)the people who had asked him for a king. 11 And he said, “(L)This will be the [c]practice of the king who will reign over you: (M)he will take your sons and put them in his chariots for himself and among his horsemen, and (N)they will run before his chariots. 12 (O)He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to [d]do his plowing and to gather in his harvest, and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will also take your daughters and use them as perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 (P)He will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 And he will take a tenth of your seed and your vineyards and give it to his high officials and his servants. 16 He will also take your male servants and your female servants, and your best young men, and your donkeys, and [e]use them for his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his servants. 18 Then (Q)you will cry out on that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but (R)the Lord will not answer you on that day.”
19 Yet the people (S)refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, “No, but there shall be a king over us, 20 (T)so that we also may be like all the nations, and our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” 21 Now after Samuel had heard all the words of the people, (U)he [f]repeated them in the Lord’s hearing. 22 And the Lord said to Samuel, “(V)Listen to their voice and appoint a king for them.” So Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Go, every man to his city.”

8 Toen Samuël erg oud was geworden, trok hij zich terug en benoemde zijn zonen als richters. 2 Joël en Abia, zijn oudste zonen, spraken recht in Berseba, 3 maar zij volgden niet het voorbeeld van hun vader. Zij lieten zich omkopen, deden onrechtvaardige uitspraken en waren uit op eigen gewin.
4 Ten slotte kwamen de leiders van Israël in Rama bijeen om deze zaak met Samuël te bespreken. 5 Zij vertelden hem dat er veel was veranderd sinds hij zich had teruggetrokken, omdat zijn zonen slechte mannen waren. ‘Geef ons een koning, net als de andere volken,’ pleitten zij. 6 Samuël was geschokt dat het volk een koning wilde en wendde zich tot de Here om raad. 7 ‘Doe wat zij u vragen,’ antwoordde de Here, ‘want zij wijzen niet u af, maar Mij. Zij willen niet dat Ik nog langer hun Koning ben. 8 Al vanaf het moment dat Ik hen uit Egypte wegleidde, hebben zij Mij telkens weer afgewezen en zijn andere goden gevolgd. En nu behandelen zij u op dezelfde wijze. 9 Doe wat zij vragen, maar waarschuw hen wel voor de gevolgen van een koning die over hen zal heersen!’
10 Samuël vertelde het volk wat de Here hem had gezegd: 11 ‘U staat erop een koning te hebben? Laat mij u dan vertellen welke privileges die koning zal hebben. Uw zonen zullen dienstplichtig worden en voor hem dienst doen als bestuurders van strijdwagens, ruiters en voetknechten. 12 Ze zullen gevechtseenheden moeten aanvoeren als er oorlog komt en worden gedwongen de koninklijke akkers te ploegen en de oogst binnen te halen. Ook zullen ze zijn wapens en strijdwagens moeten maken. 13 Hij zal uw dochters van u afnemen en hen dwingen aan zijn hof voor hem te koken en te bakken en parfums te maken. 14 Hij zal u uw beste stukken land, wijngaarden en olijfgaarden afnemen en die aan zijn personeel geven. 15 Hij zal een tiende deel van uw oogst nemen en ook dat verdelen onder zijn personeel. 16 Uw slaven en uw beste knechten en dienaren zal hij u afnemen en uw vee zal hij voor zijn eigen gebruik opeisen. 17 Hij zal een tiende deel van uw kudde in beslag nemen en u zult zijn slaven worden. 18 U zult bitter klagen over die koning die u nu verlangt, maar de Here zal niet naar u luisteren.’
19 Maar de Israëlieten sloegen Samuëls waarschuwingen in de wind. ‘Ook al zou dat gebeuren, we willen toch een koning,’ zeiden zij. 20 ‘Want wij willen net zo zijn als de volken om ons heen. Hij zal ons regeren en onze aanvoerder zijn bij een oorlog.’ 21 Samuël bracht de woorden van het volk over aan de Here. 22 En de Here antwoordde opnieuw: ‘Doe wat zij u vragen en stel een koning over hen aan.’ Daarna stuurde Samuël de mannen terug naar hun woonplaatsen.

8 And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
2 Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.
3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.
7 And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
9 Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.
10 And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.
11 And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.
12 And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.
13 And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.
14 And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.
15 And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.
16 And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.
17 He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.
18 And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day.
19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;
20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.
22 And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

6 But the thing (H)displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel (I)prayed to the Lord. 7 And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for (J)they have not rejected you, but (K)they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. 8 According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9 Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and (L)show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”
10 So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. 11 And he said, (M)“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your (N)sons and appoint them for his own (O)chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. 12 He will (P)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. 14 And (Q)he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. 15 He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. 16 And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest [a]young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. 18 And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord (R)will not hear you in that day.”
19 Nevertheless the people (S)refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, 20 that we also may be (T)like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”
21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. 22 So the Lord said to Samuel, (U)“Heed their voice, and make them a king.”
And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”
