Israel Defeats the Philistines

7 Then the men of ^(A)Kirjath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of ^(B)Abinadab on the hill, and ^(C)consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.

Samuel Judges Israel

² So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.

³ Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you ^(D)return to the Lord with all your hearts, then ^(E)put away the foreign gods and the ^(F)Ashtoreths^[a] from among you, and ^(G)prepare your hearts for the Lord, and ^(H)serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” ⁴ So the children of Israel put away the ^(I)Baals and the ^[b]Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.

⁵ And Samuel said, ^(J)“Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and ^(K)I will pray to the Lord for you.” ⁶ So they gathered together at Mizpah, ^(L)drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they ^(M)fasted that day, and said there, ^(N)“We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.

⁷ Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. ⁸ So the children of Israel said to Samuel, ^(O)“Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”

⁹ And Samuel took a ^(P)suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then ^(Q)Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. ¹⁰ Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. ^(R)But the Lord thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. ¹¹ And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and ^[c]drove them back as far as below Beth Car. ¹² Then Samuel ^(S)took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name ^[d]Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

^13 (T)So the Philistines were subdued, and they ^(U)did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. ¹⁴ Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

¹⁵ And Samuel ^(V)judged Israel all the days of his life. ¹⁶ He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. ¹⁷ But ^(W)he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he ^(X)built an altar to the Lord.

Israel Demands a King

8 Now it came to pass when Samuel was ^(Y)old that he ^(Z)made his ^(AA)sons judges over Israel. ² The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judges in Beersheba. ³ But his sons ^(AB)did not walk in his ways; they turned aside ^(AC)after dishonest gain, ^(AD)took bribes, and perverted justice.

⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah, ⁵ and said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now ^(AE)make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

⁶ But the thing ^(AF)displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel ^(AG)prayed to the Lord. ⁷ And the Lord said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for ^(AH)they have not rejected you, but ^(AI)they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them. ⁸ According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt, even to this day—with which they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. ⁹ Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and ^(AJ)show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.”

¹⁰ So Samuel told all the words of the Lord to the people who asked him for a king. ¹¹ And he said, ^(AK)“This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your ^(AL)sons and appoint them for his own ^(AM)chariots and to be his horsemen, and some will run before his chariots. ¹² He will ^(AN)appoint captains over his thousands and captains over his fifties, will set some to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. ¹³ He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers. ¹⁴ And ^(AO)he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them to his servants. ¹⁵ He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and give it to his officers and servants. ¹⁶ And he will take your male servants, your female servants, your finest ^[e]young men, and your donkeys, and put them to his work. ¹⁷ He will take a tenth of your sheep. And you will be his servants. ¹⁸ And you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and the Lord ^(AP)will not hear you in that day.”

¹⁹ Nevertheless the people ^(AQ)refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us, ²⁰ that we also may be ^(AR)like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.”

²¹ And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he repeated them in the hearing of the Lord. ²² So the Lord said to Samuel, ^(AS)“Heed their voice, and make them a king.”

And Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Every man go to his city.”

Saul Chosen to Be King

9 There was a man of Benjamin whose name was ^(AT)Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of ^[f]power. ² And he had a choice and handsome son whose name was Saul. There was not a more handsome person than he among the children of Israel. ^(AU)From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people.

³ Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. And Kish said to his son Saul, “Please take one of the servants with you, and arise, go and look for the donkeys.” ⁴ So he passed through the mountains of Ephraim and through the land of ^(AV)Shalisha, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.

⁵ When they had come to the land of ^(AW)Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, let ^(AX)us return, lest my father cease caring about the donkeys and become worried about us.”

⁶ And he said to him, “Look now, there is in this city ^(AY)a man of God, and he is an honorable man; ^(AZ)all that he says surely comes to pass. So let us go there; perhaps he can show us the way that we should go.”

⁷ Then Saul said to his servant, “But look, if we go, ^(BA)what shall we bring the man? For the bread in our vessels is all gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

⁸ And the servant answered Saul again and said, “Look, I have here at hand one-fourth of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.” ⁹ (Formerly in Israel, when a man ^(BB)went ^[g]to inquire of God, he spoke thus: “Come, let us go to the seer”; for he who is now called a prophet was formerly called ^(BC)a seer.)

¹⁰ Then Saul said to his servant, ^[h]“Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

¹¹ As they went up the hill to the city, ^(BD)they met some young women going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

¹² And they answered them and said, “Yes, there he is, just ahead of you. Hurry now; for today he came to this city, because ^(BE)there is a sacrifice of the people today ^(BF)on the high place. ¹³ As soon as you come into the city, you will surely find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. For the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now therefore, go up, for about this time you will find him.” ¹⁴ So they went up to the city. As they were coming into the city, there was Samuel, coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.

^15 (BG)Now the Lord had told Samuel in his ear the day before Saul came, saying, ¹⁶ “Tomorrow about this time ^(BH)I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, ^(BI)and you shall anoint him ^[i]commander over My people Israel, that he may save My people from the hand of the Philistines; for I have ^(BJ)looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”

¹⁷ So when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, ^(BK)“There he is, the man of whom I spoke to you. This one shall reign over My people.” ¹⁸ Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, “Please tell me, where is the seer’s house?”

¹⁹ Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and tomorrow I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart. ²⁰ But as for ^(BL)your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not be anxious about them, for they have been found. And ^[j]on whom ^(BM)is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on you and on all your father’s house?”

²¹ And Saul answered and said, ^(BN)“Am I not a Benjamite, of the ^(BO)smallest of the tribes of Israel, and ^(BP)my family the least of all the families of the ^[k]tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?”

²² Now Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall, and had them sit in the place of honor among those who were invited; there were about thirty persons. ²³ And Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it apart.’ ” ²⁴ So the cook took up ^(BQ)the thigh with its upper part and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here it is, what was kept back. It was set apart for you. Eat; for until this time it has been kept for you, since I said I invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

²⁵ When they had come down from the high place into the city, ^[l]Samuel spoke with Saul on ^(BR)the top of the house. ²⁶ They arose early; and it was about the dawning of the day that Samuel called to Saul on the top of the house, saying, “Get up, that I may send you on your way.” And Saul arose, and both of them went outside, he and Samuel.

Saul Anointed King

²⁷ As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” And he went on. “But you stand here ^[m]awhile, that I may announce to you the word of God.”

Their Faith in Christ

^3 (D)We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, ^4 (E)since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of ^(F)your love for all the saints; ⁵ because of the hope ^(G)which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel, ⁶ which has come to you, ^(H)as it has also in all the world, and ^(I)is bringing forth ^[b]fruit, as it is also among you since the day you heard and knew ^(J)the grace of God in truth; ⁷ as you also learned from ^(K)Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is ^(L)a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, ⁸ who also declared to us your ^(M)love in the Spirit.

Preeminence of Christ

^9 (N)For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask ^(O)that you may be filled with ^(P)the knowledge of His will ^(Q)in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; ^10 (R)that you may walk worthy of the Lord, ^(S)fully pleasing Him, ^(T)being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the ^(U)knowledge of God; ^11 (V)strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, ^(W)for all patience and longsuffering ^(X)with joy; ^12 (Y)giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of ^(Z)the inheritance of the saints in the light. ¹³ He has delivered us from ^(AA)the power of darkness ^(AB)and ^[c]conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, ^14 (AC)in whom we have redemption ^[d]through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

¹⁵ He is ^(AD)the image of the invisible God, ^(AE)the firstborn over all creation. ¹⁶ For ^(AF)by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or ^(AG)dominions or ^[e]principalities or ^[f]powers. All things were created ^(AH)through Him and for Him. ^17 (AI)And He is before all things, and in Him ^(AJ)all things consist. ¹⁸ And ^(AK)He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, ^(AL)the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

Reconciled in Christ

¹⁹ For it pleased the Father that ^(AM)in Him all the fullness should dwell, ²⁰ and ^(AN)by Him to reconcile ^(AO)all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, ^(AP)having made peace through the blood of His cross.

²¹ And you, ^(AQ)who once were alienated and enemies in your mind ^(AR)by wicked works, yet now He has ^(AS)reconciled ^22 (AT)in the body of His flesh through death, ^(AU)to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight— ²³ if indeed you continue ^(AV)in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are ^(AW)not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, ^(AX)which was preached to every creature under heaven, ^(AY)of which I, Paul, became a minister.

Sacrificial Service for Christ

^24 (AZ)I now rejoice in my sufferings ^(BA)for you, and fill up in my flesh ^(BB)what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for ^(BC)the sake of His body, which is the church, ²⁵ of which I became a minister according to ^(BD)the ^[g]stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, ^26 (BE)the ^[h]mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, ^(BF)but now has been revealed to His saints. ^27 (BG)To them God willed to make known what are ^(BH)the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: ^[i]which is ^(BI)Christ in you, ^(BJ)the hope of glory. ²⁸ Him we preach, ^(BK)warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, ^(BL)that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. ²⁹ To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me ^(BM)mightily.

Not Philosophy but Christ

2 For I want you to know what a great ^(BN)conflict^[j] I have for you and those in Laodicea, and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, ² that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, and attaining to all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the knowledge of the mystery of God, ^[k]both of the Father and of Christ, ^3 (BO)in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

⁴ Now this I say ^(BP)lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words. ⁵ For ^(BQ)though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing ^[l]to see ^(BR)your good order and the ^(BS)steadfastness of your faith in Christ.

^6 (BT)As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, ^7 (BU)rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding ^[m]in it with thanksgiving.

⁸ Beware lest anyone ^[n]cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to ^(BV)the tradition of men, according to the ^(BW)basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. ⁹ For ^(BX)in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead ^[o]bodily; ¹⁰ and you are complete in Him, who is the ^(BY)head of all ^[p]principality and power.

Not Legalism but Christ

¹¹ In Him you were also ^(BZ)circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by ^(CA)putting off the body ^[q]of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, ^12 (CB)buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through ^(CC)faith in the working of God, ^(CD)who raised Him from the dead. ¹³ And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, ^14 (CE)having wiped out the ^[r]handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. ^15 (CF)Having disarmed ^(CG)principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

¹⁶ So let no one ^(CH)judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a ^[s]festival or a new moon or sabbaths, ^17 (CI)which are a shadow of things to come, but the ^[t]substance is of Christ. ¹⁸ Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has ^[u]not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, ¹⁹ and not holding fast to ^(CJ)the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, ^(CK)grows with the increase that is from God.

^20 [v]Therefore, if you ^(CL)died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, ^(CM)why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations— ^21 (CN)“Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” ²² which all concern things which perish with the using—^(CO)according to the commandments and doctrines of men? ^23 (CP)These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and ^[w]neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh.
