7 Les gens de Kirjath Jearim vinrent, et firent monter l'arche de l'Éternel; ils la conduisirent dans la maison d'Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Éléazar pour garder l'arche de l'Éternel.
2 Il s'était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l'arche avait été déposée à Kirjath Jearim. Vingt années s'étaient écoulées. Alors toute la maison d'Israël poussa des gémissements vers l'Éternel.
3 Samuel dit à toute la maison d'Israël: Si c'est de tout votre coeur que vous revenez à l'Éternel, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre coeur vers l'Éternel, et servez-le lui seul; et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins.
4 Et les enfants d'Israël ôtèrent du milieu d'eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent l'Éternel seul.
5 Samuel dit: Assemblez tout Israël à Mitspa, et je prierai l'Éternel pour vous. Et ils s'assemblèrent à Mitspa.
6 Ils puisèrent de l'eau et la répandirent devant l'Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, en disant: Nous avons péché contre l'Éternel! Samuel jugea les enfants d'Israël à Mitspa.
7 Les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d'Israël s'étaient assemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent contre Israël. A cette nouvelle, les enfants d'Israël eurent peur des Philistins,
8 et ils dirent à Samuel: Ne cesse point de crier pour nous à l'Éternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve de la main des Philistins.
9 Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et l'offrit tout entier en holocauste à l'Éternel. Il cria à l'Éternel pour Israël, et l'Éternel l'exauça.
10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L'Éternel fit retentir en ce jour son tonnerre sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël.
11 Les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins, et les battirent jusqu'au-dessous de Beth Car.
12 Samuel prit une pierre, qu'il plaça entre Mitspa et Schen, et il l'appela du nom d'Ében Ézer, en disant: Jusqu'ici l'Éternel nous a secourus.
13 Ainsi les Philistins furent humiliés, et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d'Israël. La main de l'Éternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel.
14 Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ékron jusqu'à Gath, avec leur territoire; Israël les arracha de la main des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amoréens.
15 Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie.
16 Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans tous ces lieux.
17 Puis il revenait à Rama, où était sa maison; et là il jugeait Israël, et il y bâtit un autel à l'Éternel.

Défaite des Philistins

2 Il s'était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l'arche avait été déposée à Kirjath-Jearim. Vingt années avaient passé. Alors toute la communauté d'Israël poussa des gémissements vers l'Eternel. 3 Samuel dit à toute la communauté d'Israël: «Si c'est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l'Eternel, enlevez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre cœur vers l'Eternel et servez-le lui seul. Il vous délivrera alors de l’oppression des Philistins.» 4 Les Israélites enlevèrent du milieu d'eux les Baals[a] et les Astartés[b], et ils servirent l'Eternel seul.
5 Samuel dit: «Rassemblez tout Israël à Mitspa et je prierai l'Eternel pour vous.» Et ils se rassemblèrent à Mitspa. 6 Ils puisèrent de l'eau et la versèrent devant l'Eternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là en disant: «Nous avons péché contre l'Eternel!» Samuel jugea les Israélites à Mitspa.
7 Les Philistins apprirent que les Israélites s'étaient rassemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent pour attaquer Israël. A cette nouvelle, les Israélites eurent peur des Philistins, 8 et ils dirent à Samuel: «N'arrête pas de crier pour nous à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, afin qu'il nous sauve de la domination des Philistins.» 9 Samuel prit un tout jeune agneau et l'offrit tout entier en holocauste à l'Eternel. Il cria à l'Eternel pour Israël et l'Eternel l'exauça. 10 Pendant que Samuel offrait l'holocauste, les Philistins s'approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L'Eternel fit gronder ce jour-là son tonnerre sur les Philistins et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël. 11 Les hommes d'Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins et les battirent jusqu'au-dessous de Beth-Car.

7 The men of Kiriath Jearim came and took the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord. They took it to Abinadab’s house on a hill. There they made Abinadab’s son Eleazar holy for the Lord so he could guard the Ark of the Covenant.
The Lord Saves the Israelites
2 The Ark of the Covenant stayed at Kiriath Jearim a long time—20 years in all. And the people of Israel began to follow the Lord again. 3 Samuel spoke to the whole group of Israel. He said, “If you’re turning back to the Lord with all your hearts, you must remove your foreign gods. You must remove your idols of Ashtoreth. You must give yourselves fully to the Lord and serve only him. Then he will save you from the Philistines.”
4 So the Israelites put away their idols of Baal and Ashtoreth. And they served only the Lord.
5 Samuel said, “All Israel must meet at Mizpah. I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6 So the Israelites met together at Mizpah. They drew water from the ground and poured it out before the Lord. They did not eat that day. They confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel served as judge of Israel at Mizpah.
7 The Philistines heard the Israelites were meeting at Mizpah. So the Philistine kings came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard they were coming, they were afraid. 8 They said to Samuel, “Don’t stop praying to the Lord our God for us! Ask the Lord to save us from the Philistines!” 9 Then Samuel took a baby lamb. He offered the lamb to the Lord as a whole burnt offering. He called to the Lord for Israel’s sake. And the Lord answered him.
10 While Samuel was burning the offering, the Philistines came near. They were going to attack Israel. But the Lord thundered against the Philistines with loud thunder. They were so frightened they became confused. So the Israelites defeated the Philistines in battle. 11 The men of Israel ran out of Mizpah and chased the Philistines. They went almost to Beth Car, killing the Philistines along the way.
Peace Comes to Israel
12 After this happened Samuel took a stone. He set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named the stone Ebenezer.[a] Samuel said, “The Lord has helped us to this point.” 13 So the Philistines were defeated. They did not enter the Israelites’ land again.
The Lord was against the Philistines all Samuel’s life. 14 Earlier the Philistines had taken towns from the Israelites. But the Israelites won them back, from Ekron to Gath. They also took back from the Philistines the neighboring lands of these towns. There was peace also between Israel and the Amorites.
15 Samuel continued as judge of Israel all his life. 16 Every year he went from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah. He judged the Israelites in all these towns. 17 But Samuel always went back to Ramah, where his home was. He also judged Israel there. And there he built an altar to the Lord.

7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(A) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(B) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(C) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(D) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(E) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(F) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(G) and commit(H) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(I) and he will deliver(J) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(K) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(L) and I will intercede(M) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(N) they drew water and poured(O) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[a](P) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(Q) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(R) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(S) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(T)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(U) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(V) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(W) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b](X) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(Y) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(Z) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(AA)
15 Samuel(AB) continued as Israel’s leader(AC) all(AD) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(AE) to Gilgal(AF) to Mizpah, judging(AG) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(AH) where his home was, and there he also held court(AI) for Israel. And he built an altar(AJ) there to the Lord.
