Israel Defeats the Philistines
7 Then the men of (A)Kirjath Jearim came and took the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of (B)Abinadab on the hill, and (C)consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
Samuel Judges Israel
2 So it was that the ark remained in Kirjath Jearim a long time; it was there twenty years. And all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3 Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you (D)return to the Lord with all your hearts, then (E)put away the foreign gods and the (F)Ashtoreths[a] from among you, and (G)prepare your hearts for the Lord, and (H)serve Him only; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the children of Israel put away the (I)Baals and the [b]Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 And Samuel said, (J)“Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and (K)I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6 So they gathered together at Mizpah, (L)drew water, and poured it out before the Lord. And they (M)fasted that day, and said there, (N)“We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the children of Israel at Mizpah.
7 Now when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel had gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard of it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8 So the children of Israel said to Samuel, (O)“Do not cease to cry out to the Lord our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
9 And Samuel took a (P)suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. Then (Q)Samuel cried out to the Lord for Israel, and the Lord answered him. 10 Now as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel. (R)But the Lord thundered with a loud thunder upon the Philistines that day, and so confused them that they were overcome before Israel. 11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, and [c]drove them back as far as below Beth Car. 12 Then Samuel (S)took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name [d]Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 (T)So the Philistines were subdued, and they (U)did not come anymore into the territory of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14 Then the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron to Gath; and Israel recovered its territory from the hands of the Philistines. Also there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15 And Samuel (V)judged Israel all the days of his life. 16 He went from year to year on a circuit to Bethel, Gilgal, and Mizpah, and judged Israel in all those places. 17 But (W)he always returned to Ramah, for his home was there. There he judged Israel, and there he (X)built an altar to the Lord.

2 El arca permaneció en Quiriat Yearín durante mucho tiempo, unos veinte años, y todo el pueblo de Israel buscaba con ansiedad al Señor. 3 Por eso Samuel dijo al pueblo: «Si ustedes desean volverse al Señor de todo corazón, desháganse de los dioses extranjeros y de las imágenes de Astarté. Dedíquense totalmente a servir solo al Señor, y él los librará del poder de los filisteos». 4 Así que los israelitas echaron fuera a los ídolos de Baal y a las imágenes de Astarté y sirvieron solo al Señor.
5 Luego Samuel ordenó: «Reúnan a todo Israel en Mizpa para que yo ruegue al Señor por ustedes». 6 Cuando los israelitas se reunieron en Mizpa, sacaron agua y la derramaron ante el Señor. También ayunaron durante el día, y públicamente confesaron: «Hemos pecado contra el Señor». Fue en Mizpa donde Samuel comenzó a liderar a los israelitas.
7 Cuando los filisteos se enteraron de que los israelitas se habían reunido en Mizpa, los jefes filisteos marcharon contra Israel. Al darse cuenta de esto, los israelitas tuvieron miedo de los filisteos 8 y dijeron a Samuel: «No dejes de clamar al Señor por nosotros, para que nos salve del poder de los filisteos». 9 Samuel tomó entonces un cordero pequeño y lo ofreció en holocausto al Señor. Luego clamó al Señor en favor de Israel, y el Señor respondió.
10 Mientras Samuel ofrecía el sacrificio, los filisteos avanzaron para atacar a Israel. Pero aquel día el Señor lanzó grandes truenos contra los filisteos. Esto creó confusión entre ellos y cayeron derrotados ante los israelitas. 11 Entonces los israelitas persiguieron a los filisteos desde Mizpa hasta más allá de Bet Car, matándolos por el camino.
12 Después Samuel tomó una piedra, la colocó entre Mizpa y Sen, y la llamó Ebenezer,[a] «El Señor no ha dejado de ayudarnos».
13 Durante toda la vida de Samuel, el Señor manifestó su poder sobre los filisteos. Estos fueron subyugados por los israelitas y no volvieron a invadir su territorio. 14 Fue así como los israelitas recuperaron las ciudades que los filisteos habían capturado anteriormente, desde Ecrón hasta Gat, y libraron todo ese territorio del dominio de los filisteos. También hubo paz entre Israel y los amorreos.
15 Samuel siguió gobernando a Israel toda su vida. 16 Todos los años recorría las ciudades de Betel, Guilgal y Mizpa, y atendía los asuntos del país en esas regiones. 17 Luego regresaba a Ramá, donde residía, y desde allí lideraba a Israel. También allí erigió un altar al Señor.

7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(A) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(B) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(C) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(D) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(E) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(F) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(G) and commit(H) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(I) and he will deliver(J) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(K) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(L) and I will intercede(M) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(N) they drew water and poured(O) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[a](P) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(Q) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(R) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(S) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(T)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(U) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(V) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(W) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b](X) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(Y) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(Z) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(AA)
15 Samuel(AB) continued as Israel’s leader(AC) all(AD) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(AE) to Gilgal(AF) to Mizpah, judging(AG) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(AH) where his home was, and there he also held court(AI) for Israel. And he built an altar(AJ) there to the Lord.
