2 Trecuse mult timp – douăzeci de ani – de când Chivotul se afla la Chiriat-Iearim şi întregii Case a lui Israel îi părea rău după Domnul. 3 Atunci Samuel a vorbit întregii Case a lui Israel:
– Dacă din toată inima voastră vă întoarceţi la Domnul, atunci îndepărtaţi dumnezeii străini şi aştoretele[a] din mijlocul vostru, îndreptaţi-vă inima spre Domnul şi slujiţi-I numai Lui. Şi El vă va elibera de sub puterea filistenilor.
4 Israeliţii au îndepărtat baalii[b] şi aştoretele şi au slujit numai Domnului. 5 Apoi Samuel a spus:
– Adunaţi tot Israelul la Miţpa şi eu mă voi ruga Domnului pentru voi.
6 S-au adunat deci la Miţpa, au scos apă şi au vărsat-o înaintea Domnului[c]. În ziua aceea, ei au postit şi au recunoscut acolo că au păcătuit împotriva Domnului. Samuel îi judeca[d] pe israeliţi la Miţpa.
7 Filistenii au auzit că israeliţii s-au adunat la Miţpa. Atunci domnitorii filistenilor s-au ridicat împotriva lui Israel. Când au auzit israeliţii lucrul acesta, le-a fost teamă de filisteni 8 şi i-au zis lui Samuel:
– Nu înceta să strigi pentru noi la Domnul, Dumnezeul nostru, ca să ne elibereze de sub puterea filistenilor.
9 Samuel a luat un miel care încă era alăptat şi l-a adus întreg ca ardere de tot Domnului. Apoi a strigat către Domnul pentru Israel, iar Domnul i-a răspuns. 10 În timp ce Samuel aducea arderea de tot, filistenii se apropiau ca să se lupte cu Israel. Domnul însă a tunat în ziua aceea cu un vuiet puternic împotriva filistenilor, aducând o aşa groază între ei, încât au fost puşi pe fugă dinaintea lui Israel. 11 Bărbaţii lui Israel au ieşit din Miţpa, i-au urmărit pe filisteni şi i-au zdrobit până în apropiere de Bet-Car. 12 Samuel a luat atunci o piatră, a aşezat-o între Miţpa şi Şen şi i-a pus numele Eben-Ezer[e], spunând: „Până aici Domnul ne-a ajutat.“
13 Astfel, filistenii au fost supuşi şi n-au mai invadat din nou teritoriul Israelului, iar mâna Domnului a fost împotriva filistenilor cât timp a trăit Samuel. 14 Cetăţile pe care filistenii le-au capturat de la Israel, cele de la Ekron şi până la Gat, au fost luate înapoi. Israel şi-a eliberat teritoriile de sub stăpânirea filistenilor. În acelaşi timp, a fost pace şi între Israel şi amoriţi.

7 1 So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark(A) of the Lord. They brought it to Abinadab’s(B) house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the Lord. 2 The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim(C) a long time—twenty years in all.
Samuel Subdues the Philistines at Mizpah
Then all the people of Israel turned back to the Lord.(D) 3 So Samuel said to all the Israelites, “If you are returning(E) to the Lord with all your hearts, then rid(F) yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths(G) and commit(H) yourselves to the Lord and serve him only,(I) and he will deliver(J) you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4 So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the Lord only.
5 Then Samuel(K) said, “Assemble all Israel at Mizpah,(L) and I will intercede(M) with the Lord for you.” 6 When they had assembled at Mizpah,(N) they drew water and poured(O) it out before the Lord. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the Lord.” Now Samuel was serving as leader[a](P) of Israel at Mizpah.
7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid(Q) because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying(R) out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel(S) took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.(T)
10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered(U) with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic(V) that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone(W) and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer,[b](X) saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”
13 So the Philistines were subdued(Y) and they stopped invading Israel’s territory. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. 14 The towns from Ekron(Z) to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.(AA)
15 Samuel(AB) continued as Israel’s leader(AC) all(AD) the days of his life. 16 From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel(AE) to Gilgal(AF) to Mizpah, judging(AG) Israel in all those places. 17 But he always went back to Ramah,(AH) where his home was, and there he also held court(AI) for Israel. And he built an altar(AJ) there to the Lord.

3 Men Samuel sade till hela Israels hus: »Om I av allt edert hjärta viljen vända om till HERREN, så skaffen bort ifrån eder de främmande gudarna och Astarterna, och rikten edra hjärtan till HERREN och tjänen honom allena, så skall han rädda eder ifrån filistéernas hand.»
4 Då skaffade Israels barn bort Baalerna och Astarterna och tjänade HERREN allena.
5 Och Samuel sade: »Församlen hela Israel i Mispa, så vill jag där bedja till HERREN för eder.»
6 Då församlade de sig i Mispa och öste upp vatten och göto ut det in. för HERREN och fastade den dagen; och de sade där: »Vi hava syndat mot HERREN.» Och Samuel dömde Israels barn i Mispa.
7 Men när filistéerna hörde att Israels barn hade församlat sig i Mispa, drogo filistéernas hövdingar ditupp mot Israel. Då Israels barn hörde detta, blevo de förskräckta för filistéerna.
8 Och Israels barn sade till Samuel: »Hör icke upp att ropa för oss till HERREN, vår Gud, att han må frälsa oss ifrån filistéernas hand.»
9 Då tog Samuel ett dilamm och offrade det såsom ett heloffer, till brännoffer åt HERREN; och Samuel ropade till HERREN för Israel, och HERREN bönhörde honom.
10 Under det att Samuel offrade brännoffret, ryckte nämligen filistéerna fram till strid mot Israel; men HERREN lät ett starkt tordön dundra över filistéerna på den dagen och förvirrade dem, så att de blevo slagna av Israel.

7 And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the Lord, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord.
2 And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord.
3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the Lord with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the Lord, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
4 Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the Lord only.
5 And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the Lord.
6 And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the Lord. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines.
8 And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
9 And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him.
10 And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.
11 And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar.
12 Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.
13 So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14 And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.
15 And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16 And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places.
17 And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the Lord.
