The Return of the Covenant Box
6 After the Lord's Covenant Box had been in Philistia for seven months, 2 the people called the priests and the magicians and asked, “What shall we do with the Covenant Box of the Lord? If we send it back where it belongs, what shall we send with it?”
3 They answered, “If you return the Covenant Box of the God of Israel, you must, of course, send with it a gift to him to pay for your sin. The Covenant Box must not go back without a gift. In this way you will be healed, and you will find out why he has kept on punishing you.”
4 “What gift shall we send him?” the people asked.
They answered, “Five gold models of tumors and five gold mice, one of each for each Philistine king. The same plague was sent on all of you and on the five kings. 5 You must make these models of the tumors and of the mice that are ravaging your country, and you must give honor to the God of Israel. Perhaps he will stop punishing you, your gods, and your land. 6 Why should you be stubborn, as the king of Egypt and the Egyptians were? Don't forget how God made fools of them until they let the Israelites leave Egypt. 7 So prepare a new wagon and two cows that have never been yoked; hitch them to the wagon and drive their calves back to the barn. 8 Take the Lord's Covenant Box, put it on the wagon, and place in a box beside it the gold models that you are sending to him as a gift to pay for your sins. Start the wagon on its way and let it go by itself. 9 Then watch it go; if it goes toward the town of Beth Shemesh, this means that it is the God of the Israelites who has sent this terrible disaster on us. But if it doesn't, then we will know that he did not send the plague; it was only a matter of chance.”
10 They did what they were told: they took two cows and hitched them to the wagon, and shut the calves in the barn. 11 They put the Covenant Box in the wagon, together with the box containing the gold models of the mice and of the tumors. 12 The cows started off on the road to Beth Shemesh and headed straight toward it, without turning off the road. They were mooing as they went. The five Philistine kings followed them as far as the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 The people of Beth Shemesh were reaping wheat in the valley, when suddenly they looked up and saw the Covenant Box. They were overjoyed at the sight. 14 The wagon came to a field belonging to a man named Joshua, who lived in Beth Shemesh, and it stopped there near a large rock. The people chopped up the wooden wagon and killed the cows and burned them as a burnt sacrifice to the Lord. 15 The Levites lifted off the Covenant Box of the Lord and the box with the gold models in it, and placed them on the large rock. Then the people of Beth Shemesh offered burnt sacrifices and other sacrifices to the Lord. 16 The five Philistine kings watched them do this and then went back to Ekron that same day.
17 The Philistines sent the five gold tumors to the Lord as a gift to pay for their sins, one each for the cities of Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. 18 They also sent gold mice, one for each of the cities ruled by the five Philistine kings, both the fortified towns and the villages without walls. The large rock in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, on which they placed the Lord's Covenant Box, is still there as a witness to what happened.
19 The Lord killed seventy of the men of Beth Shemesh because they looked inside the Covenant Box. And the people mourned because the Lord had caused such a great slaughter among them.
The Covenant Box at Kiriath Jearim
20 So the men of Beth Shemesh said, “Who can stand before the Lord, this holy God? Where can we send him to get him away from us?” 21 They sent messengers to the people of Kiriath Jearim to say, “The Philistines have returned the Lord's Covenant Box. Come down and get it.”

The Ark Returned to Israel
6 Now the ark of the Lord was in the country of the Philistines seven months. 2 And the Philistines (A)called for the priests and the diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the Lord? Tell us how we should send it to its place.”
3 So they said, “If you send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it (B)empty; but by all means return it to Him with (C)a trespass offering. Then you will be healed, and it will be known to you why His hand is not removed from you.”
4 Then they said, “What is the trespass offering which we shall return to Him?”
They answered, (D)“Five golden tumors and five golden rats, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines. For the same plague was on all of [a]you and on your lords. 5 Therefore you shall make images of your tumors and images of your rats that (E)ravage the land, and you shall (F)give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will (G)lighten[b] His hand from you, from (H)your gods, and from your land. 6 Why then do you harden your hearts (I)as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? When He did mighty things among them, (J)did they not let the people go, that they might depart? 7 Now therefore, make (K)a new cart, take two milk cows (L)which have never been yoked, and hitch the cows to the cart; and take their calves home, away from them. 8 Then take the ark of the Lord and set it on the cart; and put (M)the articles of gold which you are returning to Him as a trespass offering in a chest by its side. Then send it away, and let it go. 9 And watch: if it goes up the road to its own territory, to (N)Beth Shemesh, then He has done [c]us this great evil. But if not, then (O)we shall know that it is not His hand that struck us—it happened to us by chance.”
10 Then the men did so; they took two milk cows and hitched them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home. 11 And they set the ark of the Lord on the cart, and the chest with the gold rats and the images of their tumors. 12 Then the cows headed straight for the road to Beth Shemesh, and went along the (P)highway, lowing as they went, and did not turn aside to the right hand or the left. And the lords of the Philistines went after them to the border of Beth Shemesh.
13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were reaping their (Q)wheat harvest in the valley; and they lifted their eyes and saw the ark, and rejoiced to see it. 14 Then the cart came into the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh, and stood there; a large stone was there. So they split the wood of the cart and offered the cows as a burnt offering to the Lord. 15 The Levites took down the ark of the Lord and the chest that was with it, in which were the articles of gold, and put them on the large stone. Then the men of Beth Shemesh offered burnt offerings and made sacrifices the same day to the Lord. 16 So when (R)the five lords of the Philistines had seen it, they returned to Ekron the same day.
17 (S)These are the golden tumors which the Philistines returned as a trespass offering to the Lord: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for (T)Gath, one for Ekron; 18 and the golden rats, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both fortified cities and country villages, even as far as the large stone of Abel on which they set the ark of the Lord, which stone remains to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth Shemesh.
19 Then (U)He struck the men of Beth Shemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord. [d]He (V)struck fifty thousand and seventy men of the people, and the people lamented because the Lord had struck the people with a great slaughter.
The Ark at Kirjath Jearim
20 And the men of Beth Shemesh said, (W)“Who is able to stand before this holy Lord God? And to whom shall it go up from us?” 21 So they sent messengers to the inhabitants of (X)Kirjath Jearim, saying, “The Philistines have brought back the ark of the Lord; come down and take it up with you.”

Arătaţi-ne cum trebuie să-l trimitem înapoi la locul lui.” 3 Ei au răspuns: „Dacă trimiteţi înapoi chivotul Dumnezeului lui Israel, să nu-l trimiteţi cu mâna goală(B), ci aduceţi lui Dumnezeu o jertfă(C) pentru vină; atunci vă veţi vindeca şi veţi şti(D) pentru ce nu s-a îndepărtat mâna Lui de peste voi.” 4 Filistenii au zis: „Ce jertfă pentru vină să-I aducem?” Ei au răspuns: „Cinci umflături de aur şi cinci şoareci de aur, după(E) numărul domnitorilor filistenilor, căci aceeaşi urgie a fost peste voi toţi şi peste domnitorii voştri. 5 Faceţi nişte chipuri după umflăturile(F) voastre şi nişte chipuri după şoarecii voştri care pustiesc ţara şi daţi(G) slavă Dumnezeului lui Israel: poate că va înceta(H) să-Şi apese mâna peste voi, peste dumnezeii(I) voştri şi peste ţara voastră. 6 Pentru ce să vă împietriţi inima, cum(J) şi-au împietrit inima egiptenii şi Faraon? Nu i-a pedepsit El şi n-au lăsat(K) ei atunci pe copiii lui Israel să plece? 7 Acum, faceţi un(L) car nou de tot şi luaţi două vaci tinere, care dau ţâţă şi care n-au tras(M) la jug; înjugaţi vacile la car şi mânaţi înapoi acasă viţeii lor care se ţin după ele. 8 Să luaţi chivotul Domnului şi să-l puneţi în car; să puneţi alături de el, într-o ladă, lucrurile de aur(N) pe care le daţi Domnului ca dar pentru vină, apoi să-l trimiteţi, şi va pleca. 9 Să-l urmăriţi cu privirea, şi, dacă se va sui pe drumul hotarului său spre Bet-Şemeş(O), Domnul ne-a făcut acest mare rău; dacă nu, vom şti(P) că nu mâna Lui ne-a lovit, ci lucrul acesta a venit peste noi din întâmplare.” 10 Oamenii au făcut aşa. Au luat două vaci care alăptau, le-au înjugat la car şi le-au închis viţeii acasă. 11 Au pus în car chivotul Domnului şi lada cu şoarecii de aur şi chipurile umflăturilor lor. 12 Vacile au apucat drept pe drumul spre Bet-Şemeş; au ţinut mereu acelaşi drum, mugind, şi nu s-au abătut nici la dreapta, nici la stânga. Domnitorii filistenilor au mers după ele până la hotarul Bet-Şemeşului.
Chivotul lui Bet-Şemeş
13 Locuitorii din Bet-Şemeş secerau grânele în vale: au ridicat ochii, au zărit chivotul şi s-au bucurat când l-au văzut. 14 Carul a ajuns în câmpul lui Iosua din Bet-Şemeş şi s-a oprit acolo. Acolo era o piatră mare. Au despicat lemnele carului, şi vacile le-au adus ca ardere-de-tot Domnului. 15 Leviţii au pogorât chivotul Domnului şi lada de lângă el, în care se aflau lucrurile de aur, şi le-au pus pe toate pe piatra cea mare. Oamenii din Bet-Şemeş au adus Domnului în ziua aceea arderi-de-tot şi jertfe. 16 Cei cinci(Q) domnitori ai filistenilor, după ce au văzut lucrul acesta, s-au întors la Ecron în aceeaşi zi. 17 Iată(R) umflăturile de aur pe care le-au dat Domnului filistenii ca dar pentru vină; una pentru Asdod, una pentru Gaza, una pentru Ascalon, una pentru Gat, una pentru Ecron. 18 Erau şi nişte şoareci de aur, după numărul tuturor cetăţilor filistenilor, care erau ale celor cinci căpetenii, atât cetăţi întărite, cât şi cetăţi fără ziduri. Lucrul acesta îl adevereşte piatra cea mare pe care au pus chivotul Domnului şi care este şi astăzi în câmpul lui Iosua din Bet-Şemeş. 19 Domnul a lovit(S) pe oamenii din Bet-Şemeş când s-au uitat în chivotul Domnului; a lovit (cincizeci de mii) şaptezeci de oameni din popor. Şi poporul a plâns, pentru că Domnul îl lovise cu o mare urgie. 20 Oamenii din Bet-Şemeş au zis: „Cine poate(T) sta înaintea Domnului, înaintea acestui Dumnezeu sfânt? Şi la cine trebuie să se suie chivotul, dacă se depărtează de la noi?” 21 Au trimis soli la locuitorii din Chiriat-Iearim(U) ca să le spună: „Filistenii au adus înapoi chivotul Domnului; pogorâţi-vă şi suiţi-l la voi.”
