Después de que los filisteos capturaran el arca de Dios, la llevaron del campo de batalla en Ebenezer hasta la ciudad de Asdod. Llevaron el arca de Dios al templo del dios Dagón y la pusieron junto a una estatua de Dagón. Pero cuando los ciudadanos de Asdod fueron a verla a la mañana siguiente, ¡la estatua de Dagón había caído boca abajo delante del arca del Señor! Así que levantaron a Dagón y nuevamente lo colocaron en su lugar. Pero temprano al día siguiente sucedió lo mismo: de nuevo Dagón había caído boca abajo frente al arca del Señor. Esta vez su cabeza y sus manos se habían quebrado y estaban a la entrada; solo el tronco de su cuerpo quedó intacto. Por eso, hasta el día de hoy, ni los sacerdotes de Dagón ni nadie más que entra al templo de Dagón, en Asdod, pisan el umbral.

Entonces la mano dura del Señor hirió a la gente de Asdod y de las aldeas cercanas con una plaga de tumores.[a] Cuando el pueblo se dio cuenta de lo que sucedía, exclamó: «¡No podemos quedarnos con el arca del Dios de Israel ni un minuto más! ¡Él está en contra de nosotros! Todos seremos destruidos junto con Dagón, nuestro dios». De modo que convocaron a los gobernantes de las ciudades filisteas y les preguntaron:

—¿Qué debemos hacer con el arca del Dios de Israel?

Los gobernantes deliberaron y contestaron:

—Trasládenla a la ciudad de Gat.

Así que trasladaron el arca del Dios de Israel a Gat. Pero cuando el arca llegó a Gat, la mano dura del Señor cayó sobre sus hombres, jóvenes y mayores; los hirió con una plaga de tumores, y hubo gran pánico.

10 Entonces enviaron el arca de Dios a la ciudad de Ecrón, pero cuando los habitantes de Ecrón vieron que se acercaba, clamaron: «¡Traen el arca del Dios de Israel a nuestra ciudad para matarnos a nosotros también!». 11 Entonces el pueblo volvió a llamar a los gobernantes filisteos y les suplicó: «¡Por favor, regresen el arca del Dios de Israel a su propio país, o nos matará[b] a todos!». Pues ya había comenzado la plaga mortal enviada por Dios, y un gran temor se apoderaba del pueblo. 12 Los que no morían, sufrían de tumores; y el clamor del pueblo ascendió al cielo.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron

After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)

The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”

They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.

But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)

As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.

When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.

And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.

And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.

Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.

But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.

And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.

They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.

And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.

10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.

11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.

12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
