A arca de Deus nas mãos dos filisteus
5 Os filisteus levaram a arca de Deus de Ebenézer a Asdode. 2 Eles a levaram ao templo de Dagom e a colocaram ao lado da estátua desse deus. 3 Na manhã seguinte, quando os habitantes de Asdode se levantaram, viram que a estátua de Dagom estava caída no chão, de boca para baixo, diante da arca do SENHOR. Então a levantaram e a colocaram no seu lugar. 4 Mas quando se levantaram na manhã seguinte, outra vez encontraram a estátua caída no chão diante da arca do SENHOR! Desta vez a cabeça e as mãos da estátua estavam quebradas, caídas na entrada. O único que ficou inteiro foi o corpo da estátua. 5 É por isso que até hoje os sacerdotes de Dagom e todas as pessoas que entram no templo de Dagom em Asdode não pisam na entrada.
6 O SENHOR fez a vida do povo de Asdode e de seus vizinhos difícil. Ele causou muitos problemas e fez com que eles tivessem tumores. Também lhes enviou ratazanas que andaram por todos seus barcos e depois foram para sua terra. O povo da cidade tinha muito medo delas.[a] 7 O povo de Asdode viu o que estava acontecendo e disse:
—A arca do Deus de Israel não pode ficar aqui! Deus está castigando a nós e ao nosso deus Dagom.
8 O povo de Asdode convocou os cinco governantes filisteus e lhes perguntou:
—O que devemos fazer com a arca do Deus de Israel?
Os governantes responderam:
—Levem a arca até a cidade de Gate.
E eles assim fizeram. 9 Mas quando os filisteus levaram a arca de Deus a Gate, o SENHOR castigou essa cidade e as pessoas se atemorizaram. Deus causou muitos problemas a todo o povo, jovens e líderes, e fez com que eles tivessem tumores. 10 Portanto, os filisteus enviaram a arca de Deus à cidade de Ecrom, mas quando a arca chegou a essa cidade, o povo de Ecrom começou a se queixar, gritando:
—Por que trouxeram a arca do Deus de Israel a esta cidade? Querem matar todos nós?
11 O povo de Ecrom convocou todos os governantes filisteus e lhes disse:
—Devolvam a arca do Deus de Israel ao seu lugar, antes que nós e o nosso povo sejamos mortos.
Os habitantes de Ecrom tinham muito medo deles. Deus fez com que a vida deles ficasse impossível nesse lugar, 12 e aos que não morreram lhes saíram tumores. Os gritos do povo de Ecrom chegaram até o céu.

5 Depois que tomaram a arca de Deus, os filisteus a levaram do campo de batalha em Ebenézer para a cidade de Asdode. 2 Levaram a arca de Deus para o templo de Dagom e a colocaram ao lado de uma estátua de Dagom. 3 Contudo, na manhã seguinte, quando os moradores de Asdode se levantaram, viram que Dagom estava caído com o rosto em terra diante da arca do Senhor. Então levantaram Dagom e o puseram de volta em seu lugar. 4 Na manhã do outro dia, porém, viram que tinha acontecido a mesma coisa: Dagom estava caído novamente com o rosto em terra diante da arca do Senhor. Dessa vez, a cabeça e as mãos de Dagom tinham se quebrado e estavam junto à porta de entrada. Somente o corpo permaneceu intacto. 5 Por isso, até hoje os sacerdotes de Dagom e aqueles que entram em seu templo, em Asdode, não pisam na soleira da porta.
6 Então a mão do Senhor pesou sobre os moradores de Asdode e dos povoados vizinhos e os feriu com uma praga de tumores.[a] 7 Quando o povo de Asdode viu o que estava acontecendo, exclamou: “Não podemos mais ficar com a arca do Deus de Israel! A mão dele pesou sobre nós e sobre Dagom, nosso deus!”. 8 Então reuniram os governantes das cidades dos filisteus e lhes perguntaram: “O que devemos fazer com a arca do Deus de Israel?”.
Os governantes responderam: “Levem a arca para a cidade de Gate”. Então levaram a arca do Deus de Israel para Gate. 9 Mas, quando a arca chegou a Gate, a mão do Senhor pesou sobre a cidade, ferindo com uma praga de tumores os homens de lá, tanto os jovens como os velhos, e houve grande pânico.
10 Por isso, enviaram a arca de Deus para a cidade de Ecrom, mas quando os habitantes dali viram que ela entrava na cidade, exclamaram: “Por que estão trazendo a arca do Deus de Israel para cá? Querem matar todo o nosso povo?”. 11 Reuniram mais uma vez os governantes filisteus e suplicaram: “Mandem a arca do Deus de Israel de volta para sua própria terra, para que não mate todo o nosso povo!”. Pois a mão de Deus já pesava sobre a cidade, e um pavor mortal se espalhava por todo o lugar. 12 Os que não morreram foram afligidos com tumores, e o clamor da cidade subiu até o céu.

5 Después de haber capturado el arca de Dios, los filisteos la llevaron de Eben-ezer a Asdod. 2 Los filisteos tomaron el arca de Dios, la introdujeron en el templo de Dagón y la pusieron junto a Dagón. 3 Y cuando los de Asdod se levantaron temprano al día siguiente, he aquí que Dagón estaba caído en tierra sobre su rostro, frente al arca del SEÑOR. Entonces tomaron a Dagón y lo pusieron otra vez en su sitio.
4 Pero al levantarse temprano al día siguiente, he aquí que Dagón estaba caído en tierra sobre su rostro, frente al arca del SEÑOR; y la cabeza y las manos de Dagón estaban cortadas, sobre el umbral. Solo el tronco[a] le había quedado a Dagón. 5 Por esta razón los sacerdotes de Dagón, y todos los que entran en el templo de Dagón, no pisan el umbral de Dagón en Asdod, hasta el día de hoy.
El arca trae plagas a los filisteos
6 La mano del SEÑOR se agravó contra los de Asdod: Los asoló y los hirió con tumores, tanto en Asdod como en sus territorios. 7 Al ver esto, los hombres de Asdod dijeron:
—¡Que no se quede con nosotros el arca del Dios de Israel, porque su mano es dura sobre nosotros y sobre Dagón nuestro dios!
8 Entonces mandaron reunirse con ellos a todos los gobernantes de los filisteos y les preguntaron:
—¿Qué haremos con el arca del Dios de Israel?
Ellos respondieron:
—Que el arca del Dios de Israel sea trasladada a Gat.
Y trasladaron el arca del Dios de Israel. 9 Pero aconteció, después que la habían trasladado, que la mano del SEÑOR fue contra la ciudad ocasionando gran pánico. E hirió a los hombres de la ciudad, desde el menor hasta el mayor, de modo que aparecieron en ellos tumores. 10 Entonces enviaron el arca de Dios a Ecrón. Y sucedió que cuando el arca de Dios llegó a Ecrón, los de Ecrón dieron voces diciendo:
—¡Han trasladado hasta nosotros el arca del Dios de Israel, para que nos haga morir a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo![b].
11 Entonces mandaron reunir a todos los gobernantes de los filisteos, y dijeron:
—Envíen el arca del Dios de Israel y que vuelva a su lugar, no sea que nos mate a nosotros y a nuestro pueblo[c].
Pues había pánico de muerte en toda la ciudad, y la mano de Dios se había agravado allí. 12 Los hombres que no habían muerto fueron llagados con tumores, y el clamor de la ciudad subía hasta el cielo.

5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
