El Arca entre los filisteos
5 Después de capturar el Arca, los filisteos la trasladaron desde Eben Ézer hasta Asdod. 2 Tomaron el Arca, la llevaron al templo de Dagón y la colocaron junto a Dagón. 3 Cuando los de Asdod se levantaron al día siguiente, encontraron a Dagón caído en el suelo ante el Arca del Señor. Agarraron a Dagón y lo pusieron en su sitio.
4 Cuando se levantaron a la mañana siguiente, encontraron de nuevo a Dagón caído en el suelo ante el Arca del Señor. Tenía la cabeza y las dos manos arrancadas y tiradas sobre el umbral; de Dagón sólo quedaba el tronco. 5 Por esta razón, los sacerdotes de Dagón y los que visitan su templo en Asdod siguen sin pisar el umbral hasta el presente.
6 El Señor castigó gravemente a los asdoditas y los aterrorizó, asolando con tumores a Asdod y a su comarca. 7 Cuando los asdoditas vieron lo que sucedía, dijeron:
— El Arca del Dios de Israel no debe quedarse entre nosotros, porque su poder se recrudece contra nosotros y contra nuestro dios Dagón.
8 Entonces convocaron a todos los príncipes filisteos y los consultaron:
— ¿Qué podemos hacer con el Arca del Dios de Israel?
Ellos contestaron:
— Que la lleven a Gat.
Así, pues, trasladaron a Gat el Arca del Dios de Israel. 9 Pero, nada más trasladarla, el Señor castigó a la ciudad e hizo cundir el pánico, pues hirió a sus habitantes, pequeños y grandes, y les salieron tumores. 10 Entonces enviaron el Arca de Dios a Ecrón. Y, al llegar allí, los ecronitas se pusieron a gritar:
— ¡Han traído aquí el Arca del Dios de Israel para que nos aniquile a todos!
11 Entonces convocaron de nuevo a todos los príncipes filisteos y les dijeron:
— Llevaos el Arca del Dios de Israel y que vuelva a su sitio, para que no nos aniquile a todos.
Y es que por toda la ciudad cundía un pánico mortal, pues el Señor la había castigado muy duramente. 12 Los que no morían estaban infectados de tumores y el clamor de la ciudad llegaba al cielo.

5 Después de capturar el arca de Dios, los filisteos la llevaron de Ebenezer a Asdod 2 y la pusieron junto a la estatua de Dagón, en el templo de ese dios. 3 Al día siguiente, cuando los habitantes de Asdod se levantaron, vieron que la estatua de Dagón estaba tirada en el suelo, boca abajo, frente al arca del Señor. Así que la levantaron y la colocaron en su sitio. 4 Pero al día siguiente, cuando se levantaron, volvieron a encontrar la estatua tirada en el suelo, boca abajo, frente al arca del Señor. Sobre el umbral estaban su cabeza y sus dos manos, separadas del tronco. 5 Por eso, hasta el día de hoy, ninguno de los que entran en el templo de Dagón en Asdod, incluso los sacerdotes, pisan el umbral.
6 Entonces el Señor descargó su mano sobre la población de Asdod y sus alrededores, y los azotó con tumores. 7 La gente de Asdod reconoció lo que estaba pasando y declaró: «El arca del Dios de Israel no puede quedarse en medio nuestro, porque ese Dios ha descargado su mano sobre nosotros y contra nuestro dios Dagón».
8 Así que convocaron a todos los gobernantes filisteos y les preguntaron:
—¿Qué vamos a hacer con el arca del Dios de Israel?
—Trasladen el arca del Dios de Israel a la ciudad de Gat —respondieron los jefes.
Y así lo hicieron.
9 Pero después de que la trasladaron, el Señor castigó a esa ciudad, afligiendo con una erupción de tumores a sus habitantes, desde el más pequeño hasta el mayor. Eso provocó un pánico horrible. 10 Entonces enviaron el arca de Dios a Ecrón, pero tan pronto como entró el arca en la ciudad, sus habitantes se pusieron a gritar: «¡Nos han traído el arca del Dios de Israel para matarnos a todos!». 11 Por eso convocaron a todos los jefes filisteos y protestaron: «¡Llévense el arca del Dios de Israel! ¡Devuélvanla a su lugar de origen, para que no nos mate a nosotros y a todos los nuestros!». Y es que el terror de la muerte se había apoderado de la ciudad, porque Dios había descargado su mano sobre ese lugar. 12 Los que no murieron fueron azotados por tumores, de modo que los gritos de la ciudad llegaban hasta el cielo.

5 Now the Philistines took the ark of God and (A)brought it from Ebenezer to (B)Ashdod. 2 Then the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it to (C)the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon. 3 Then the Ashdodites arose early the next morning, and behold, (D)Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh. So they took Dagon and (E)set him in his place again. 4 But they arose early the next morning, and behold, (F)Dagon had fallen on his face to the ground before the ark of Yahweh. And the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off on the threshold; [a]only the trunk of Dagon was left to him. 5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon nor all who enter Dagon’s house (G)tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day.
6 Now (H)the hand of Yahweh was glorious against the Ashdodites, and (I)He made them desolate and struck them with (J)tumors, both Ashdod and its territories. 7 Thus the men of Ashdod saw that it was so and said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not remain with us, for His hand is severe on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they sent and (K)gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” And they said, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be brought around to Gath.” And they brought the ark of the God of Israel around. 9 Now it happened after they had brought it around, that (L)the hand of Yahweh was against the city with very great confusion; and He struck the men of the city, both young and old, so that (M)tumors broke out on them. 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And as the ark of God came to Ekron the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought the ark of the God of Israel around to [b]us, to put [c]us and [d]our people to death.” 11 They (N)sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it return to its own place, so that it will not put [e]us and [f]our people to death.” For there was a deadly confusion throughout the city; (O)the hand of God was very glorious there. 12 Now the men who did not die were struck with tumors and (P)the cry of the city went up to heaven.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.
