Le coffre de l’alliance chez les Philistins
5 Après s’être emparés du coffre de Dieu, les Philistins l’emportèrent d’Eben-Ezer à Ashdod[a]. 2 Là, ils le mirent dans le temple de leur dieu Dagôn et l’installèrent à côté de la statue de l’idole[b]. 3 Le lendemain matin, les habitants d’Ashdod découvrirent Dagôn étendu par terre sur sa face devant le coffre de l’Eternel. Ils le relevèrent et le remirent en place. 4 Le jour suivant, de bonne heure, ils trouvèrent encore Dagôn par terre sur sa face devant le coffre de l’Eternel, sa tête et ses deux mains coupées gisaient sur le seuil de la pièce, seul le tronc était resté là. 5 C’est pour cette raison que, jusqu’à ce jour, les prêtres de Dagôn et tous ceux qui entrent dans son temple à Ashdod évitent de poser leur pied sur le seuil.
6 Puis l’Eternel frappa très sévèrement les Ashdodiens et fit des ravages parmi eux en les frappant de tumeurs ; [des rats apparurent dans le pays, semant la mort et la destruction[c]] dans la ville et les territoires qui en dépendaient. 7 En voyant ce qui leur arrivait, les gens d’Ashdod déclarèrent : Le coffre du Dieu d’Israël ne restera pas plus longtemps chez nous, car il nous frappe très sévèrement, nous et Dagôn notre dieu.
8 Ils envoyèrent chercher les princes des Philistins pour les réunir chez eux et ils leur demandèrent ce qu’il fallait faire du coffre du Dieu d’Israël. Ceux-ci décidèrent de le transférer à Gath. Ainsi on y transporta le coffre du Dieu d’Israël.
9 Mais quand on l’eut transféré là-bas, l’Eternel intervint contre les habitants de la ville, et y sema la terreur. En effet, l’Eternel les frappa tous, quelle que soit leur condition sociale, et ils furent atteints de tumeurs[d]. 10 Alors ils expédièrent le coffre de Dieu à Eqrôn.
Mais lorsqu’il arriva là-bas, les Eqroniens[e] protestèrent en criant : Ils ont transporté le coffre du Dieu d’Israël chez nous pour nous faire mourir, nous et tout notre peuple !
11 A leur tour, ils firent chercher les princes des Philistins pour qu’ils se réunissent et ils leur dirent : Renvoyez le coffre du Dieu d’Israël et qu’il retourne dans son pays pour qu’il ne nous fasse pas mourir toute la population.
Une peur mortelle régnait dans toute la ville, car Dieu la frappait sévèrement. 12 Les gens qui avaient échappé à la mort étaient atteints de tumeurs et les cris de détresse de la ville montaient jusqu’au ciel.

Trouble for the Philistines
5 After the Philistines [4:1] had captured the Ark of God [4:3], they took it from Ebenezer [4:1] to Ashdod [C one of the five chief cities of the Philistines]. 2 They carried it into Dagon’s [C a major Philistine god, perhaps a storm god] temple and put it next to Dagon [C to symbolize that Israel’s god was now on the side of Dagon]. 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next morning, they found that Dagon had fallen on his face on the ground before the Ark of the Lord [C as if in worship]. So they put Dagon back in his place. 4 The next morning when they rose, they again found Dagon fallen face-down on the ground before the Ark of the Lord. His head and hands had broken off and were lying ·in the doorway [on the threshold; C the treatment given corpses of enemy soldiers]. Only his ·body [trunk] was ·still in one piece [intact; left to him]. 5 So, ·even today [to this day], Dagon’s priests and others who enter his temple at Ashdod refuse to step on the ·doorsill [threshold of Dagon].
6 The ·Lord was hard [L hand of the Lord was heavy] on the people of Ashdod and ·their neighbors [its environs]. He ·caused them to suffer [ravaged/terrified them] and ·gave them [struck/afflicted them with] ·growths on their skin [tumors; or hemorrhoids]. 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The Ark of the God of Israel can’t stay with us. ·God is punishing [L His hand is heavy on] us and Dagon our god.” 8 The people of Ashdod called all five Philistine ·kings [rulers] together and asked them, “What should we do with the Ark of the God of Israel?”
The rulers answered, “Move the Ark of the God of Israel to Gath [C another major city of the Philistines to the southeast of Ashdod].” So the Philistines moved it to Gath.
9 But after they moved it to Gath, there was a great panic. The ·Lord was hard [L hand of the Lord was heavy] on that city also, and he ·gave [struck; afflicted] both old and young people in Gath ·growths on their skin [with an outbreak of tumors/or hemorrhoids]. 10 Then the Philistines sent the Ark of God to Ekron [C a third major city of the Philistines north of Gath].
But when it came into Ekron, the people of Ekron ·yelled [cried out], “Why are you bringing the Ark of the God of Israel to our city? Do you want to kill us and our people?” 11 So they called all the ·kings [rulers] of the Philistines together and said, “Send the Ark of the God of Israel back to its own place ·before it kills [or it will kill] us and our people!” All the people in the city were struck with ·terror [deadly panic] because ·God was so hard [L God’s hand was so heavy] on them there. 12 The people who did not die were ·troubled [struck; afflicted] with ·growths on their skin [tumors; or hemorrhoids]. So the people of Ekron ·cried [wailed] loudly to heaven.

The Ark in Ashdod and Ekron
5 After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer(A) to Ashdod.(B) 2 Then they carried the ark into Dagon’s temple and set it beside Dagon.(C) 3 When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen(D) on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. 4 But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken(E) off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained. 5 That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.(F)
6 The Lord’s hand(G) was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation(H) on them and afflicted them with tumors.[a](I) 7 When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.” 8 So they called together all the rulers(J) of the Philistines and asked them, “What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?”
They answered, “Have the ark of the god of Israel moved to Gath.(K)” So they moved the ark of the God of Israel.
9 But after they had moved it, the Lord’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic.(L) He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumors.[b] 10 So they sent the ark of God to Ekron.(M)
As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, “They have brought the ark of the god of Israel around to us to kill us and our people.” 11 So they called together all the rulers(N) of the Philistines and said, “Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it[c] will kill us and our people.” For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it. 12 Those who did not die(O) were afflicted with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.

2 At kinuha ng mga Filisteo ang kaban ng Dios at ipinasok sa bahay ni Dagon, at inilagay sa tabi ni Dagon.
3 At nang bumangong maaga ang mga taga Asdod ng kinaumagahan, narito, si Dagon ay buwal na nakasubasob sa lupa sa harap ng kaban ng Panginoon. At kanilang kinuha si Dagon, at inilagay siya uli sa dako niyang kinaroroonan.

6 Nguni't ang kamay ng Panginoon ay bumigat sa mga taga Asdod, at mga ipinahamak niya, at mga sinaktan ng mga bukol, sa makatuwid baga'y ang Asdod at ang mga hangganan niyaon.
7 At nang makita ng mga lalake sa Asdod na gayon, ay kanilang sinabi, Ang kaban ng Dios ng Israel ay huwag matirang kasama natin; sapagka't ang kaniyang kamay ay mabigat sa atin, at kay Dagon ating dios.

9 At nangyari, na pagkatapos na kanilang madala, ang kamay ng Panginoon ay naging laban sa bayan, na nagkaroon ng malaking pagkalito: at sinaktan niya ang mga tao sa bayan, ang maliit at gayon din ang malaki; at mga bukol ay sumibol sa kanila.
10 Sa gayo'y kanilang ipinadala ang kaban ng Dios sa Ecron. At nangyari, pagdating ng kaban ng Dios sa Ecron, na ang mga Ecronita ay sumigaw, na nagsasabi, Kanilang dinala sa atin ang kaban ng Dios ng Israel, upang patayin tayo at ang ating bayan.
11 Pinasuguan nga nilang magpipisan ang lahat ng pangulo ng mga Filisteo, at kanilang sinabi, Ipadala ninyo ang kaban ng Dios ng Israel, at ipabalik ninyo sa kaniyang sariling dako, upang huwag kaming patayin at ang aming bayan. 5 And the Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it from Ebenezer unto Ashdod.
2 When the Philistines took the ark of God, they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon.
3 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place again.
4 And when they arose early on the morrow morning, behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of Dagon was left to him.
5 Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day.
6 But the hand of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, even Ashdod and the coasts thereof.
7 And when the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not abide with us: for his hand is sore upon us, and upon Dagon our god.
8 They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines unto them, and said, What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither.
9 And it was so, that, after they had carried it about, the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts.
10 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us and our people.
11 So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
12 And the men that died not were smitten with the emerods: and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
