Ang Pagkabihag sa Kaban ng Tipan
4 Ang salita ni Samuel ay dumating sa buong Israel. Ngayo'y lumabas ang Israel upang makipaglaban sa mga Filisteo. Sila'y humimpil sa Ebenezer, at ang mga Filisteo ay humimpil sa Afec.
2 Ang mga Filisteo ay humanay laban sa Israel, at nang sila'y magsagupa, ang Israel ay nagapi ng mga Filisteo na pumatay ng halos apat na libong katao sa larangan ng digmaan.
3 Nang ang mga kawal ay dumating sa kampo, sinabi ng matatanda ng Israel, “Bakit ipinatalo tayo ngayon ng Panginoon sa harapan ng mga Filisteo? Dalhin natin dito ang kaban ng tipan ng Panginoon mula sa Shilo upang siya ay makasama natin at iligtas tayo sa kamay ng ating mga kaaway.”
4 Kaya't(A) nagpasugo ang bayan sa Shilo, at kanilang dinala mula roon ang kaban ng tipan ng Panginoon ng mga hukbo, na nakaupo sa mga kerubin. Ang dalawang anak ni Eli, na sina Hofni at Finehas, ay naroroon at binabantayan ang kaban ng tipan ng Diyos.
5 Nang ang kaban ng tipan ng Panginoon ay dumating sa kampo, ang buong Israel ay sumigaw nang malakas, kaya't umalingawngaw ang lupa.
6 Nang marinig ng mga Filisteo ang ingay ng sigawan ay sinabi nila, “Ano ang kahulugan ng ingay nitong malakas na sigawan sa kampo ng mga Hebreo?” At nang kanilang nalaman na ang kaban ng Panginoon ay dumating sa kampo,
7 ang mga Filisteo ay natakot, sapagkat kanilang sinabi, “May diyos na dumating sa kampo.” Kanilang sinabi, “Kahabag-habag tayo! Sapagkat hindi pa nagkaroon ng ganyang bagay kailanman.
8 Kahabag-habag tayo! Sino ang magliligtas sa atin sa kamay ng mga makapangyarihang diyos na ito? Ito ang mga diyos na pumuksa sa mga taga-Ehipto sa pamamagitan ng sari-saring salot sa ilang.
9 Kayo'y magpakatapang at magpakalalaki, O kayong mga Filisteo. Baka kayo'y maging mga alipin ng mga Hebreo na gaya ng naging kalagayan nila sa inyo. Kayo'y magpakalalaki at lumaban.”
10 Ang mga Filisteo ay lumaban at ang Israel ay natalo at tumakas ang bawat isa sa kanila patungo sa kanya-kanyang tahanan. Nagkaroon ng malaking patayan sapagkat ang nabuwal sa Israel ay tatlumpung libong kawal na lakad.
11 Ang kaban ng Diyos ay nakuha at ang dalawang anak ni Eli, sina Hofni at Finehas ay napatay.
Namatay si Eli
12 May isang lalaking taga-Benjamin ang nakatakbo mula sa labanan, at nagtungo sa Shilo nang araw ding iyon na punit ang damit at may lupa sa kanyang ulo.
13 Nang siya'y dumating, si Eli ay nakaupo sa kanyang upuan sa tabi ng daan at nagbabantay sapagkat ang kanyang puso'y nanginginig dahil sa kaban ng Diyos. Nang ang lalaki ay pumasok sa lunsod at sinabi ang balita, ang taong-bayan ay nanangis.
14 Nang marinig ni Eli ang ingay ng sigawan ay kanyang sinabi, “Ano ang kahulugan ng ingay na ito?” At ang lalaki ay nagmadali, lumapit at nagbalita kay Eli.
15 Si Eli noon ay siyamnapu't walong taon at ang kanyang mga mata'y malalabo na kaya't siya'y hindi na makakita.
16 Sinabi ng lalaki kay Eli, “Kagagaling ko lamang sa labanan, at ako'y tumakas ngayon mula sa labanan.” At kanyang sinabi, “Paano ang nangyari, anak ko?”
17 Ang nagdala ng balita ay sumagot, “Ang Israel ay tumakas mula sa harap ng mga Filisteo. Nagkaroon din doon ng isang malaking patayan sa gitna ng mga hukbo. Ang iyong dalawang anak, sina Hofni at Finehas ay patay na, at ang kaban ng Diyos ay nakuha.”
18 Nang kanyang banggitin ang kaban ng Diyos, si Eli ay nabuwal na patalikod sa kanyang upuan sa tabi ng pintuang-bayan. Nabalian siya sa leeg, at siya'y namatay sapagkat siya'y isang lalaking matanda at mabigat. Naging hukom siya ng Israel sa loob ng apatnapung taon.
19 Samantala, ang kanyang manugang, na asawa ni Finehas ay buntis at malapit nang manganak. Nang marinig niya ang balita na ang kaban ng Diyos ay nakuha at ang kanyang biyenan at asawa ay patay na, yumukod siya at napaanak, sapagkat ang kanyang pagdaramdam ay dumating sa kanya.
20 Nang malapit na siyang mamatay, sinabi sa kanya ng mga babaing nakatayo sa tabi niya, “Huwag kang matakot sapagkat ikaw ay nanganak ng isang lalaki.” Ngunit hindi siya sumagot, o nakinig man.
21 Pinangalanan niya ang bata na Icabod[a] na sinasabi, “Ang kaluwalhatian ay umalis sa Israel,” sapagkat ang kaban ng Diyos ay nakuha at dahil sa kanyang biyenan at sa kanyang asawa.
22 Kanyang sinabi, “Ang kaluwalhatian ng Diyos ay umalis sa Israel, sapagkat ang kaban ng Diyos ay nakuha.”

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)

Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at (A)Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at (B)Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 3 And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here (C)from Shiloh, that it[a] may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, (D)who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel (E)gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, “What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “A god has come into the camp.” And they said, “Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 9 (F)Take courage, and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews (G)as they have been to you; be men and fight.”
10 So the Philistines fought, (H)and Israel was defeated, (I)and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. 11 (J)And the ark of God was captured, (K)and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
The Death of Eli
12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, (L)with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 13 When he arrived, (M)Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, “What is this uproar?” Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old (N)and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16 And the man said to Eli, “I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today.” And he said, (O)“How did it go, my son?” 17 He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 18 As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward (P)from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, (Q)“Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention. 21 And she named the child (R)Ichabod, saying, (S)“The glory has departed[b] from Israel!” because (T)the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, (U)for the ark of God has been captured.”

For there has not been such a thing before. 8 Woe to us! Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 Be strong and behave like men, O you Philistines, that you not be servants to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like men, and fight!” 10 The Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. There was a very great slaughter; for thirty thousand footmen of Israel fell. 11 God’s ark was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

When the man came into the city and told about it, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, “What does the noise of this tumult mean?”
The man hurried, and came and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old. His eyes were set, so that he could not see. 16 The man said to Eli, “I am he who came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army.”
He said, “How did the matter go, my son?”
17 He who brought the news answered, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been also a great slaughter among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and God’s ark has been captured.”
18 When he made mention of God’s ark, Eli fell from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck broke, and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
19 His daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to giving birth. When she heard the news that God’s ark was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth; for her pains came on her. 20 About the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “Don’t be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she didn’t answer, neither did she regard it. 21 She named the child Ichabod,[a] saying, “The glory has departed from Israel!” because God’s ark was taken, and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The glory has departed from Israel; for God’s ark has been taken.”
