Historia del Arca (4,1b—7,1)
Victoria filistea
Por aquellos días Israel salió a luchar contra los filisteos y acampó en Eben Ézer, mientras que los filisteos acamparon en Afec. 2 Los filisteos se desplegaron para atacar a Israel, se entabló el combate e Israel fue derrotado por los filisteos, perdiendo a cuatro mil hombres en el campo de batalla. 3 Cuando el ejército volvió al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron:
— ¿Por qué ha permitido el Señor que hoy nos derrotaran los filisteos? ¡Vamos a traernos de Siló el Arca de la alianza del Señor, para que nos acompañe y nos libre de nuestros enemigos!
4 Enviaron gente a Siló y trajeron de allí el Arca de la alianza del Señor del universo, entronizado sobre querubines. Los dos hijos de Elí, Jofní y Finés, acompañaban al Arca de la alianza de Dios. 5 Cuando el Arca de la alianza del Señor llegó al campamento, todos los israelitas lanzaron un grito de guerra tan fuerte que retembló la tierra. 6 Los filisteos oyeron aquel estruendo y se preguntaron:
— ¿A qué viene ese estruendo tan grande en el campamento hebreo?
Y cuando se enteraron de que el Arca del Señor había llegado al campamento, 7 los filisteos se asustaron y se decían:
— ¡Su Dios ha llegado al campamento! ¡Pobres de nosotros, porque nunca antes había pasado nada igual! 8 ¡Pobres de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de un Dios tan poderoso? Porque ese es el Dios que diezmó a los egipcios con toda clase de plagas en el desierto. 9 ¡Ánimo y sed fuertes, filisteos! Que no os esclavicen los hebreos como vosotros los habéis esclavizado. ¡Sed valientes y combatid!
10 Los filisteos atacaron y derrotaron a Israel que huyó a la desbandada hasta su campamento. Hubo una gran masacre y la infantería israelita perdió treinta mil hombres. 11 El Arca de Dios fue capturada y los dos hijos de Elí, Jofní y Finés, también murieron.
12 Un benjaminita salió corriendo del campo y llegó a Siló el mismo día, con la ropa hecha jirones y la cabeza cubierta de polvo. 13 Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en su silla junto al camino vigilando preocupado por la suerte del Arca de Dios. El hombre entró en la población para dar la noticia y todos los habitantes se pusieron a gritar. 14 Elí oyó el griterío y se preguntaba qué significaba aquel tumulto. Entonces el mensajero llegó presuroso a darle la noticia a Elí. 15 Con noventa y ocho años, Elí tenía la mirada fija y no veía nada. 16 El mensajero le dijo:
— Acabo de llegar del campo de batalla, del que hoy mismo he logrado escapar.
Elí le preguntó:
— ¿Qué ha pasado, hijo mío?
17 Y el mensajero respondió:
— Israel ha huido ante los filisteos y el ejército ha sufrido una gran derrota. Tus dos hijos, Jofní y Finés, también han muerto y el Arca de Dios ha sido capturada.
18 Al mencionar el Arca de Dios, Elí se cayó de la silla hacia atrás contra la puerta, se rompió la nuca y murió, pues era viejo y estaba pesado. Había sido juez de Israel durante cuarenta años.
19 Su nuera, la mujer de Finés, estaba embarazada y a punto de dar a luz. Cuando oyó las noticias de la captura del Arca de Dios y de las muertes de su suegro y su marido, le sobrevinieron los dolores del parto, se agachó y dio a luz. 20 Como estaba a punto de morir, las que la asistían le decían:
— ¡Ánimo, que has tenido un niño!
Pero ella no respondió ni hizo caso. 21 Al niño le puso por nombre Icabod, pues decía: “Israel se ha quedado sin gloria”, refiriéndose a la captura del Arca de Dios y a las muertes de su suegro y de su marido. 22 Y repetía: “Israel se ha quedado sin gloria, pues el Arca de Dios ha sido capturada”.

The Philistines Take the Ark
4 Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside (A)Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped in (B)Aphek. 2 And the Philistines arranged themselves to meet Israel. Then the battle spread, and Israel was [a]defeated before the Philistines who struck down about 4,000 men on the battlefield. 3 Then the people came into the camp, and the elders of Israel said, “(C)Why has Yahweh [b]defeated us today before the Philistines? (D)Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, that [c]it may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh of hosts (E)who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 And it happened that as the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came into the camp, (F)all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth was thrown into confusion. 6 Then the Philistines heard the noise of the shout and said, “What does the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” Then they knew that the ark of Yahweh had come into the camp. 7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “God has come into the camp.” And they said, “(G)Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who shall deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the wilderness. 9 (H)Be strong and become men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews, (I)as they have been slaves to you; therefore, become men and fight.”
10 So the Philistines fought, and (J)Israel was [d]defeated, and (K)every man fled to his tent; and the slaughter was very great, for there fell of Israel 30,000 foot soldiers. 11 And the ark of God was taken; and (L)the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
The Death of Eli
12 Now a man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day with (M)his robes torn and [e]dust on his head. 13 And he came, and behold, (N)Eli was sitting on his seat [f]by the road eagerly watching because his heart was trembling for the ark of God. Now the man came to tell it in the city, and all the city cried out. 14 Then Eli heard the noise of the outcry, and he said, “What does the noise of this commotion mean?” So the man came hurriedly and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and (O)his eyes had set so that he could not see. 16 And the man said to Eli, “I am the one who came from the battle line. Indeed, I fled from the battle line today.” And he said, “(P)How did things go, my son?” 17 Then the one who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken.” 18 And it happened that when he mentioned the ark of God, [g](Q)Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken, and he died, for the man was old and heavy. Thus he judged Israel forty years.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’s wife, was with child and about to give birth. And she heard the report that the ark of God was taken and that her father-in-law and her husband had died, so she kneeled down and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her, “(R)Do not be afraid, for you have given birth to a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention. 21 And she called the boy [h]Ichabod, saying, “(S)The glory has departed from Israel,” because (T)the ark of God was taken and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God was taken.”
