Los filisteos capturan el cofre del pacto
4 Un día, los israelitas salieron a pelear contra los filisteos, y acamparon en Eben-ézer. Los filisteos, por su parte, acamparon en Afec 2 y se organizaron para la batalla. Comenzó el combate y los filisteos derrotaron a los israelitas, matando como a cuatro mil de ellos.
3 Cuando el resto del ejército israelita regresó al campamento, los jefes del pueblo se preguntaban: «¿Por qué dejó Dios que los filisteos nos derrotaran? ¡Vamos a Siló a traer el cofre del pacto! ¡Así Dios nos salvará de nuestros enemigos!»
4 Entonces el pueblo mandó traer de Siló el cofre del pacto, donde el Dios todopoderoso reina entre los querubines. Los hijos de Elí, Hofní y Finees, venían acompañándolo.
5 Cuando el cofre del pacto llegó al campamento israelita, todo el pueblo gritó tan fuerte que hasta la tierra tembló. 6 Al oír los gritos, los filisteos se preguntaban: «¿Por qué hacen tanto escándalo esos israelitas?»
Cuando los filisteos se enteraron de que los israelitas habían traído el cofre del pacto de Dios a su campamento, 7 les dio mucho miedo y algunos decían:
«¡Estamos perdidos! ¡Dios ha llegado al campamento israelita! ¡Esto nunca nos había pasado! 8 Nadie podrá salvarnos de ese Dios tan poderoso. Es el Dios que destruyó en el desierto a los egipcios con toda clase de terribles castigos».
Y otros gritaban:
9 «Filisteos, ¡no se desanimen! Sean valientes. De lo contrario, los israelitas dejarán de servirnos y nosotros pasaremos a ser sus esclavos. ¡Peleen como hombres!»
10 Los filisteos pelearon contra los israelitas y los derrotaron. La matanza fue muy grande, pues mataron a treinta mil soldados israelitas, y el resto del ejército huyó a sus casas. 11 Además, los filisteos capturaron el cofre del pacto de Dios y mataron a Hofní y a Finees, hijos de Elí.
Muerte de Elí
12-15 Ese mismo día, un hombre de la tribu de Benjamín escapó de la batalla y llegó corriendo a Siló. Había roto su ropa y se había echado polvo sobre la cabeza en señal de luto. Cuando entró en la ciudad y le contó a la gente lo que había pasado, todos empezaron a llorar a gritos.
El sacerdote Elí era ya un anciano de noventa y ocho años, y se había quedado ciego. Estaba sentado en una silla, junto al camino. Esperaba saber, con ansias y temor, qué había pasado con el cofre del pacto de Dios. Cuando oyó el griterío, preguntó:
—¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto?
16 Y aquel hombre le dijo:
—Logré escapar del campo de batalla, y acabo de llegar.
—¿Y qué ha pasado, hijo mío? —le preguntó Elí.
17 Y el hombre le contestó:
—Los filisteos nos derrotaron y se llevaron el cofre del pacto de Dios. Miles de nuestros hombres han muertos. Tus hijos, Hofní y Finees, también murieron.
18 Como Elí ya era anciano y muy pesado, cuando oyó lo que había sucedido con el cofre, se fue de espaldas, cayó junto a la puerta y se quebró el cuello. Allí murió. Había sido líder de Israel cuarenta años.
19 La nuera de Elí estaba embarazada y a punto de tener su bebé. Le afectó saber que el cofre del pacto de Dios había sido capturado, y que su suegro y Finees, su esposo, habían muerto. Por eso empezó a sentir fuertes dolores, y tuvo a su bebé; 20 eso le causó la muerte.
Antes de que ella muriera, las mujeres que la atendían le dijeron: «Anímate, tuviste un niño».
21-22 Ella no les respondió ni les hizo caso. Sólo tuvo tiempo de ponerle a su hijo el nombre de «Icabod», y alcanzó a decir: «Israel ha perdido el cofre. ¡Dios nos ha abandonado!»

4 Samuel hablaba a todo Israel.
Por aquel tiempo salió Israel a librar batalla con los filisteos, y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, mientras los filisteos acamparon en Afec. 2 Los filisteos presentaron batalla a Israel, y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, los cuales hirieron en el campo de batalla como a cuatro mil hombres. 3 Cuando volvió el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: «¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Vayamos a Silo y traigamos el Arca del pacto de Jehová, para que, estando en medio de nosotros, nos salve de manos de nuestros enemigos.»
4 El pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allá el Arca del pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que habitaba entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el Arca del pacto de Dios. 5 Aconteció que cuando el Arca del pacto de Jehová llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con júbilo tan grande que la tierra tembló.
6 Al escuchar los filisteos las voces de júbilo dijeron: «¿Qué gritos de júbilo son estos en el campamento de los hebreos?» Y supieron que el Arca de Jehová había sido traída al campamento. 7 Entonces los filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque se decían: «Ha venido Dios al campamento.» Y exclamaron: «¡Ay de nosotros!, pues hasta ahora no había sido así. 8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de manos de estos dioses poderosos? Éstos son los dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda clase de plagas en el desierto. 9 Esforzaos, filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres, y pelead.»
10 Pelearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido; cada cual huyó a su tienda y hubo una muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie. 11 El Arca de Dios fue tomada y murieron los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.
12 Un hombre de Benjamín salió corriendo del campo de batalla y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, rotos sus vestidos y la cabeza cubierta de tierra. 13 Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino, porque su corazón temblaba a causa del Arca de Dios. Vino, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad y, al dar las noticias, toda la ciudad gritó. 14 Cuando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, preguntó:
—¿Por qué hay tanto alboroto?
Aquel hombre vino de prisa y le dio las noticias a Elí. 15 Ya éste tenía noventa y ocho años de edad y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver. 16 Dijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí:
—Vengo de la batalla, he escapado hoy del combate.
—¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío? —le preguntó Elí.
17 El mensajero respondió:
—Israel huyó delante de los filisteos y hubo gran mortandad entre el pueblo. Han muerto también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el Arca de Dios ha sido tomada.
18 Cuando el mensajero hizo mención del Arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su silla hacia atrás, al lado de la puerta, y se desnucó y murió, pues era hombre viejo y pesado. Había sido juez en Israel durante cuarenta años. 19 Su nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y próxima al alumbramiento. Cuando oyó el rumor de que el Arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se inclinó y dio a luz, pues le sobrevinieron sus dolores de repente. 20 Al tiempo que moría, las que estaban junto a ella le decían: «No tengas temor, porque has dado a luz un hijo.» Pero ella no respondió ni se dio por enterada. 21 Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: «¡La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel!», por haber sido tomada el Arca de Dios y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido. 22 Dijo, pues: «La gloria ha sido desterrada de Israel», porque había sido tomada el Arca de Dios.

4 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.
2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.
3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.
4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 And when the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.
6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into the camp.
7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.
8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.
9 Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.
10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.
11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.
12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.
13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.
14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.
15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.
16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?
17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.
18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.
20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)
