Los filisteos derrotan a Israel
4 La palabra de Samuel llegaba a todo Israel. Cuando Israel salió para enfrentarse en batalla con los filisteos, acampó junto a Ebenezer(A), mientras que los filisteos habían acampado en Afec(B). 2 Los filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a Israel. Entablado el combate, Israel fue derrotado[a] delante de los filisteos, quienes mataron como a 4,000 hombres en el campo de batalla. 3 Cuando el pueblo volvió[b] al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: «¿Por qué nos ha derrotado hoy el Señor delante de los filisteos(C)? Tomemos con nosotros, de Silo, el arca del pacto del Señor(D), para que vaya en medio de nosotros y nos libre del poder[c] de nuestros enemigos». 4 El pueblo envió gente a Silo, y trajeron de allí el arca del pacto del Señor de los ejércitos que está[d] sobre los querubines(E). Los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.
5 Y aconteció que cuando el arca del pacto del Señor entró al campamento, todo Israel gritó con voz tan fuerte que la tierra tembló(F). 6 Al oír los filisteos el ruido del clamor, dijeron: «¿Qué significa el ruido de este gran clamor en el campamento de los hebreos?». Entonces comprendieron que el arca del Señor había llegado al campamento. 7 Y los filisteos tuvieron temor, pues dijeron: «Dios ha venido al campamento». Y añadieron: «¡Ay de nosotros! Porque nada como esto ha sucedido antes(G). 8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a los egipcios en el desierto con toda clase de plagas. 9 Cobren ánimo y sean hombres(H), oh filisteos, para que no lleguen a ser esclavos de los hebreos como ellos han sido esclavos de ustedes. Sean hombres, pues, y peleen(I)».
10 Los filisteos pelearon, Israel fue derrotado(J) y cada cual huyó a su tienda(K); la mortandad fue muy grande, pues de Israel cayeron 30,000 soldados de a pie. 11 El arca de Dios fue capturada, y murieron Ofni y Finees(L), los dos hijos de Elí.
Muerte de Elí
12 Y un hombre de Benjamín corrió del campo de batalla, y llegó aquel mismo día a Silo, con sus vestidos rotos y polvo[e] sobre su cabeza(M). 13 Cuando llegó, Elí estaba sentado en su asiento junto al camino esperando ansiosamente[f], porque su corazón temblaba por causa del arca de Dios(N). Así pues, el hombre fue a anunciarlo en la ciudad, y toda la ciudad prorrumpió en gritos. 14 Al oír Elí el ruido de los gritos, dijo: «¿Qué significa el ruido de este tumulto?». Entonces el hombre se acercó apresuradamente y dio la noticia a Elí. 15 Elí tenía 98 años, sus ojos se habían cegado[g] y no podía ver(O). 16 El hombre le dijo a Elí: «Yo soy el que vine del campo de batalla. Hoy escapé del campo de batalla». «¿Cómo fueron las cosas, hijo mío(P)?», preguntó Elí. 17 El que trajo la noticia respondió: «Israel ha huido delante de los filisteos, además ha habido gran matanza entre el pueblo, también han muerto tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, y el arca de Dios ha sido tomada». 18 Cuando mencionó el arca de Dios, Elí cayó de su asiento hacia atrás, junto a la puerta(Q), se rompió la nuca y murió, pues[h] era entrado en años y pesaba mucho. Elí había juzgado a Israel durante cuarenta años.
19 Su nuera, la mujer de Finees, estaba encinta y a punto de dar a luz, y al oír la noticia que el arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se arrodilló y dio a luz, porque le sobrevinieron los dolores de parto. 20 Al tiempo que moría, las mujeres que estaban junto a ella le dijeron: «No temas, porque has dado a luz un hijo(R)». Ella no respondió ni prestó atención[i]. 21 Pero llamó al niño Icabod[j] y dijo: «¡Se ha ido la gloria de Israel(S)!», por haber sido tomada el arca de Dios, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido(T). 22 Ella dijo: «Se ha ido la gloria de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada».

De Filistijnen veroveren de kist van Gods verbond
4 Op een keer gingen de Israëlieten strijden tegen de Filistijnen. Ze zetten hun kamp op bij Eben-Haëzer. De Filistijnen hadden hun kamp opgezet bij Afek. 2 De twee legers stelden zich tegenover elkaar op. De strijd begon en Israël werd verslagen. Ongeveer 4000 Israëlieten werden gedood. 3 Toen het leger in het kamp terugkwam, zeiden de leiders van Israël: "Waarom heeft de Heer ons de strijd laten verliezen? Laten we de kist van het verbond van de Heer uit Silo halen en bij ons in het legerkamp neerzetten. De kist van de Heer zal ons redden van onze vijanden." 4 Ze lieten de kist van het verbond uit Silo komen, de kist van de Heer van de hemelse legers die tussen de engelen troont.[a] Hofni en Pinehas, de twee zonen van Eli, kwamen mee. 5 Zodra de kist van de Heer het kamp werd binnengedragen, begon iedereen zó luid te juichen, dat de aarde ervan dreunde.
6 Toen de Filistijnen het gejuich hoorden, vroegen ze: "Waarom juichen ze zo hard in het kamp van de Hebreeën?" Toen ze hoorden dat de kist van de Heer in het kamp was gekomen, werden ze bang. 7 Ze zeiden: "Wat moeten we doen? Hun God is in hun kamp gekomen. Zoiets is nog nooit gebeurd! 8 Nu zal het slecht met ons aflopen! Want wie kan ons uit de macht van deze geweldige God redden? Het is dezelfde God die de Egyptenaren in de woestijn met allerlei rampen heeft gestraft. 9 Wees vastberaden, mannen, en vecht met alles wat je in je hebt! Anders moeten we de Hebreeën dienen, net zoals zij eerst ons gediend hebben. Wees dapper en vecht!" 10 Toen vielen de Filistijnen de Israëlieten aan en versloegen hen. De Israëlieten sloegen op de vlucht en wel 30.000 van hen werden gedood. Het was een zeer grote nederlaag. 11 Ook Hofni en Pinehas, de twee zonen van Eli, werden gedood. En de kist van het verbond werd door de Filistijnen meegenomen als buit.
De dood van Eli
12 Een man uit de stam van Benjamin rende van het slagveld naar Silo. Hij kwam daar nog dezelfde dag aan. Hij had zijn kleren gescheurd en aarde op zijn hoofd gedaan als teken van verdriet. 13 Eli zat op zijn stoel aan de kant van de weg op nieuws te wachten. Hij was erg ongerust over de kist van God. Toen de man de stad binnenkwam en het nieuws vertelde, schreeuwden de bewoners van de stad het uit van ontzetting. 14 Eli hoorde het en vroeg: "Waarom wordt er zo geschreeuwd?" De man ging haastig naar Eli en vertelde hem het nieuws. 15 Eli was 98 jaar oud en hij was blind van ouderdom. 16 De man zei tegen Eli: "Ik ben net van het slagveld gevlucht." Eli vroeg: "Wat is er gebeurd, mijn zoon?" De boodschapper antwoordde: 17 "Israël is voor de Filistijnen op de vlucht geslagen. We hebben de strijd verloren en heel veel mannen zijn gedood. Ook uw twee zonen, Hofni en Pinehas, zijn dood. En de kist van God is als buit meegenomen." 18 Toen de man zei wat er met de kist van God was gebeurd, viel Eli daar bij de poort achterover van zijn stoel. Doordat hij oud en zwaar was, brak hij zijn nek en stierf. Hij was 40 jaar leider van Israël geweest.
19 De vrouw van Pinehas was in verwachting en haar kind moest al bijna geboren worden. Toen ze hoorde dat de kist van God als buit was meegenomen en dat haar man en zijn vader allebei dood waren, kreeg ze weeën en het kind werd geboren. 20 Het was een moeilijke bevalling en ze zou sterven. De vrouwen die haar waren komen helpen, zeiden: "Je kan gerust zijn, want je hebt een zoon gekregen." Maar ze antwoordde niets en liet zich niet bemoedigen. 21+22 Ze noemde het kind Ikabod (= 'de eer is weggenomen'). "Want," zei ze, "de eer is uit Israël weggenomen." Dat zei ze omdat de kist van God als buit was meegenomen en omdat haar man en zijn vader allebei dood waren.

4 Y Samuel habló a todo Israel.
Por aquel tiempo salió Israel a encontrar en batalla a los filisteos, y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, y los filisteos acamparon en Afec. 2 Y los filisteos presentaron la batalla a Israel; y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, los cuales hirieron en la batalla en el campo como a cuatro mil hombres. 3 Cuando volvió el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Traigamos a nosotros de Silo el arca del pacto de Jehová, para que viniendo entre nosotros nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos. 4 Y envió el pueblo a Silo, y trajeron de allá el arca del pacto de Jehová de los ejércitos, que moraba entre los querubines;(A) y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del pacto de Dios.
5 Aconteció que cuando el arca del pacto de Jehová llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan gran júbilo que la tierra tembló. 6 Cuando los filisteos oyeron la voz de júbilo, dijeron: ¿Qué voz de gran júbilo es esta en el campamento de los hebreos? Y supieron que el arca de Jehová había sido traída al campamento. 7 Y los filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque decían: Ha venido Dios al campamento. Y dijeron: ¡Ay de nosotros! pues antes de ahora no fue así. 8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de la mano de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda plaga en el desierto. 9 Esforzaos, oh filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres, y pelead.
10 Pelearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido, y huyeron cada cual a sus tiendas; y fue hecha muy grande mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie. 11 Y el arca de Dios fue tomada, y muertos los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.
12 Y corriendo de la batalla un hombre de Benjamín, llegó el mismo día a Silo, rotos sus vestidos y tierra sobre su cabeza; 13 y cuando llegó, he aquí que Elí estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino, porque su corazón estaba temblando por causa del arca de Dios. Llegado, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad, y dadas las nuevas, toda la ciudad gritó. 14 Cuando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, dijo: ¿Qué estruendo de alboroto es este? Y aquel hombre vino aprisa y dio las nuevas a Elí. 15 Era ya Elí de edad de noventa y ocho años, y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver. 16 Dijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí: Yo vengo de la batalla, he escapado hoy del combate. Y Elí dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío? 17 Y el mensajero respondió diciendo: Israel huyó delante de los filisteos, y también fue hecha gran mortandad en el pueblo; y también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, fueron muertos, y el arca de Dios ha sido tomada. 18 Y aconteció que cuando él hizo mención del arca de Dios, Elí cayó hacia atrás de la silla al lado de la puerta, y se desnucó y murió; porque era hombre viejo y pesado. Y había juzgado a Israel cuarenta años.
19 Y su nuera la mujer de Finees, que estaba encinta, cercana al alumbramiento, oyendo el rumor que el arca de Dios había sido tomada, y muertos su suegro y su marido, se inclinó y dio a luz; porque le sobrevinieron sus dolores de repente. 20 Y al tiempo que moría, le decían las que estaban junto a ella: No tengas temor, porque has dado a luz un hijo. Mas ella no respondió, ni se dio por entendida. 21 Y llamó al niño Icabod,[a] diciendo: ¡Traspasada es la gloria de Israel! por haber sido tomada el arca de Dios, y por la muerte de su suegro y de su marido. 22 Dijo, pues: Traspasada es la gloria de Israel; porque ha sido tomada el arca de Dios.

The Philistines Capture the Ark of the Covenant
At that time the Israelites went out to fight the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines camped at Aphek. 2 The Philistines went to meet the Israelites in battle. And as the battle spread, the Philistines defeated the Israelites. They killed about 4,000 soldiers of the Israelite army. 3 Then some Israelite soldiers went back to their camp. The elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord let the Philistines defeat us? Let’s bring the Ark of the Covenant with the Lord here from Shiloh. In this way God will go with us into battle. He will save us from our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh. They brought back the Ark of the Covenant with the Lord of heaven’s armies. Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the Ark of the Covenant.
5 The Ark of the Covenant with the Lord came into the camp. And all the Israelites gave a great shout of joy. It made the ground shake. 6 The Philistines heard Israel’s shout. They asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?”
Then the Philistines found out that the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord had come into the Hebrew camp. 7 They were afraid and said, “A god has come into the Hebrew camp! We’re in trouble! This has never happened before! 8 How terrible it will be for us! Who can save us from these powerful gods? They are the ones who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of disasters in the desert. 9 Be brave, Philistines! Fight like men! In the past they were our slaves. So fight like men, or you will become their slaves.”
10 So the Philistines fought hard and defeated the Israelites. Every Israelite soldier ran away to his own home. It was a great defeat for Israel, because 30,000 Israelite soldiers were killed. 11 The Ark of the Covenant of God was taken by the Philistines. And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were killed.
12 That same day a man from the tribe of Benjamin ran from the battle. He tore his clothes and put dust on his head to show his great sadness. 13 When he arrived in Shiloh, Eli was by the side of the road. Eli was sitting there in a chair, watching. He was worried about the Ark of the Covenant of God. When the Benjaminite entered Shiloh, he told the bad news. Then all the people in town cried loudly. 14 Eli heard the crying and asked, “What’s all this noise?”
The Benjaminite ran to Eli and told him what had happened. 15 Eli was now 98 years old, and he was blind. 16 The Benjaminite told him, “I have come from the battle. I ran all the way here today.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The Benjaminite answered, “Israel ran away from the Philistines. The Israelite army has lost many soldiers. Your two sons are both dead. And the Philistines have taken the Ark of the Covenant of God.”
18 When he mentioned the Ark of the Covenant of God, Eli fell backward off his chair. He fell beside the gate and broke his neck, because he was old and fat. And Eli died. He had led Israel for 40 years.
The Glory Is Gone
19 Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant. It was nearly time for her baby to be born. She heard the news that the Ark of the Covenant of God had been taken. She heard also that Eli, her father-in-law, and Phinehas, her husband, were both dead. So she began to give birth to her child. The child was born, but the mother had much trouble in giving birth. 20 As she was dying, the women who helped her give birth said, “Don’t worry! You’ve given birth to a son!” But she did not answer or pay attention. She named the baby Ichabod.[a] 21 She named him Ichabod and said, “Israel’s glory is gone.” She said this because the Ark of the Covenant of God had been taken. It was also because her father-in-law and husband were dead. 22 She said, “Israel’s glory is gone, because the Ark of the Covenant of God has been taken away.”

The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)
