4 And Samuel’s word came to all Israel.
The Philistines Capture the Ark
Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer,(A) and the Philistines at Aphek.(B) 2 The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. 3 When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why(C) did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark(D) of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh,(E) so that he may go with us(F) and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
4 So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim.(G) And Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 When the ark of the Lord’s covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout(H) that the ground shook. 6 Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, “What’s all this shouting in the Hebrew(I) camp?”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid.(J) “A god has[a] come into the camp,” they said. “Oh no! Nothing like this has happened before. 8 We’re doomed! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck(K) the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues(L) in the wilderness. 9 Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they(M) have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
10 So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated(N) and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 11 The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.(O)
Death of Eli
12 That same day a Benjamite(P) ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh with his clothes torn and dust(Q) on his head. 13 When he arrived, there was Eli(R) sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry.
14 Eli heard the outcry and asked, “What is the meaning of this uproar?”
The man hurried over to Eli, 15 who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes(S) had failed so that he could not see. 16 He told Eli, “I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day.”
Eli asked, “What happened, my son?”
17 The man who brought the news replied, “Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead,(T) and the ark of God has been captured.”(U)
18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and he was heavy. He had led[b](V) Israel forty years.(W)
19 His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. 20 As she was dying, the women attending her said, “Don’t despair; you have given birth to a son.” But she did not respond or pay any attention.
21 She named the boy Ichabod,[c](X) saying, “The Glory(Y) has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 She said, “The Glory(Z) has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured.”(AA)

Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at (A)Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at (B)Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle. 3 And when the people came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord here (C)from Shiloh, that it[a] may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts, (D)who is enthroned on the cherubim. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
5 As soon as the ark of the covenant of the Lord came into the camp, all Israel (E)gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded. 6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, “What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?” And when they learned that the ark of the Lord had come to the camp, 7 the Philistines were afraid, for they said, “A god has come into the camp.” And they said, “Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before. 8 Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who struck the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness. 9 (F)Take courage, and be men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews (G)as they have been to you; be men and fight.”
10 So the Philistines fought, (H)and Israel was defeated, (I)and they fled, every man to his home. And there was a very great slaughter, for thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell. 11 (J)And the ark of God was captured, (K)and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
The Death of Eli
12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, (L)with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. 13 When he arrived, (M)Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out. 14 When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, “What is this uproar?” Then the man hurried and came and told Eli. 15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old (N)and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 16 And the man said to Eli, “I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today.” And he said, (O)“How did it go, my son?” 17 He who brought the news answered and said, “Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured.” 18 As soon as he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward (P)from his seat by the side of the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
19 Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant, about to give birth. And when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth, for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, (Q)“Do not be afraid, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer or pay attention. 21 And she named the child (R)Ichabod, saying, (S)“The glory has departed[b] from Israel!” because (T)the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband. 22 And she said, “The glory has departed from Israel, (U)for the ark of God has been captured.”

Rương Giao Ước Trong Tay Kẻ Thù
Một ngày kia, người Phi-li-tin tập họp lực lượng đánh dân Y-sơ-ra-ên.[b] Khi dân Y-sơ-ra-ên ra trận chiến đấu với người Phi-li-tin, họ đóng quân tại Ê-bên Ê-xe[c] còn người Phi-li-tin đóng tại A-phéc. 2 Người Phi-li-tin dàn binh giao chiến với dân Y-sơ-ra-ên. Trận chiến càng thêm ác liệt. Dân Y-sơ-ra-ên thua trận, bị quân Phi-li-tin đánh giết khoảng bốn ngàn người ngoài trận địa. 3 Khi đoàn quân sống sót trở về trại, các trưởng lão Y-sơ-ra-ên tự hỏi nhau: “Tại sao CHÚA để cho quân Phi-li-tin đánh bại chúng ta hôm nay? Chúng ta hãy mang Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA từ Si-lô về đây. Ngài sẽ ở giữa chúng ta, và giải cứu chúng ta khỏi tay kẻ thù.”
4 Vậy họ sai người đến Si-lô khiêng về Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA Toàn Năng, Đấng ngự trên các chê-ru-bim.[d] Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a, hai người con của thầy tế lễ Hê-li, cũng về theo Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời. 5 Khi Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA về đến trại, toàn quân Y-sơ-ra-ên reo mừng vang dội đến nỗi đất rung chuyển. 6 Người Phi-li-tin nghe tiếng reo hò liền hỏi nhau: “Tại sao có tiếng la hét inh ỏi đó trong trại quân Hy-bá?” Khi biết là Rương Giao Ước của CHÚA vừa đến trại, 7 người Phi-li-tin hoảng sợ vì họ nói: “Các vị thần vừa đến trại!” Rồi họ kêu lên: “Chúng ta nguy rồi! Trước đây, chưa hề có chuyện như thế này xảy ra bao giờ! 8 Chúng ta nguy rồi! Ai có thể cứu chúng ta thoát khỏi tay các thần hùng mạnh này? Chính các thần này đã giáng đủ mọi tai họa xuống dân Ai-cập trong sa mạc. 9 Nào, anh em Phi-li-tin, hãy can đảm lên! Hãy tỏ chí nam nhi, kẻo anh em phải làm nô lệ cho bọn Hy-bá như chúng đã làm nô lệ cho anh em! Hãy tỏ chí nam nhi, hãy chiến đấu!”
10 Quân Phi-li-tin chiến đấu. Quân Y-sơ-ra-ên thua trận, ai nấy chạy trốn về lều mình. Đó là một thảm bại nặng nề: ba mươi ngàn bộ binh Y-sơ-ra-ên tử trận. 11 Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị đánh cướp; Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a, hai người con của ông Hê-li cũng tử trận.
Thầy Tế Lễ Hê-li Qua Đời
12 Một người thuộc bộ tộc Bên-gia-min chạy từ trận địa về đến Si-lô nội trong ngày ấy. Anh xé rách quần áo và rải bụi đất lên đầu để biểu lộ nỗi buồn. 13 Khi anh đến nơi, ông Hê-li đang ngồi ngóng tin trên ghế cạnh bên đường, vì ông hồi hộp lo ngại cho Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời. Khi anh vào thành báo tin, cả thành đều gào lên thất thanh. 14 Ông Hê-li nghe tiếng kêu gào hỏi: “Chuyện gì mà ồn ào vậy?” Anh vội vàng đến báo tin cho ông Hê-li. 15 Ông Hê-li lúc bấy giờ đã chín mươi tám tuổi. Mắt ông đã mờ, không còn thấy được nữa. 16 Anh thưa với ông Hê-li: “Con mới về từ chiến trường. Con vừa chạy thoát ngày hôm nay.” Ông Hê-li hỏi: “Có chuyện gì xảy ra vậy con?” 17 Người đem tin đáp: “Y-sơ-ra-ên bị Phi-li-tin đánh bại, phải bỏ chạy. Quân ta thiệt hại nặng nề. Hai người con của ông, Hóp-ni và Phi-nê-a, cũng tử trận, và Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp mất.” 18 Khi anh nhắc đến Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời, ông Hê-li đang ngồi trên ghế bên cổng, té quật ngửa ra sau, đập bể gáy và chết, vì ông đã già lại nặng nề. Ông lãnh đạo xét xử dân Y-sơ-ra-ên trong bốn mươi năm.
Vợ Góa Của Phi-nê-a Qua Đời
19 Con dâu của ông là vợ của Phi-nê-a đang có thai, gần đến ngày sanh. Nghe tin Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp mất, cùng ông gia và chồng đều qua đời, cơn đau đẻ bỗng quặn lên, chị gập người xuống và rặn đẻ. 20 Trong khi chị hấp hối, những người đàn bà đỡ đẻ cho chị nói: “Chị an tâm; chị sanh được con trai.” Nhưng chị không đáp lời nào, cũng không để tâm. 21 Chị gọi tên đứa bé là Y-ca-bốt, có nghĩa là “vinh quang của Đức Chúa Trời đã rời hỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên,” ngụ ý muốn nói về Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp mất, và về sự chết của ông gia và chồng chị. 22 Chị nói: “Vinh quang của Đức Chúa Trời đã rời khỏi Y-sơ-ra-ên vì Rương Giao Ước của Đức Chúa Trời bị cướp mất.”
