La fin de Saül(A)
31 Les Philistins attaquaient Israël. Les soldats israélites s’enfuirent devant eux et beaucoup d’entre eux furent tués sur le mont Guilboa. 2 Les Philistins s’acharnèrent sur Saül et sur ses fils et ils tuèrent Jonathan, Abinadab et Malkishoua, fils de Saül. 3 Dès lors, tout le combat se concentra sur Saül. Les archers le découvrirent et il en fut très terrifié[a]. 4 Alors, il ordonna à celui qui portait ses armes : Dégaine ton épée et tue-moi, pour que ces incirconcis ne viennent pas me transpercer et me faire subir leurs outrages.
Mais celui-ci refusa, car il tremblait de peur. Alors Saül prit lui-même l’épée et se jeta dessus. 5 Quand l’écuyer vit que Saül était mort, il se jeta lui aussi sur son arme et mourut aux côtés de son maître. 6 Ainsi périrent ensemble, le même jour, Saül, ses trois fils, l’homme qui portait ses armes, et tous ses hommes.
7 Quand les Israélites qui habitaient de l’autre côté de la vallée[b] et ceux qui s’étaient fixés au-delà du Jourdain virent que l’armée d’Israël était en déroute et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, ils abandonnèrent les villes et prirent la fuite. Les Philistins allèrent s’y établir.
8 Le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent sur le champ de bataille pour détrousser les cadavres. Ils découvrirent Saül et ses trois fils qui étaient tombés sur le mont Guilboa. 9 Ils coupèrent la tête du roi et le dépouillèrent de ses armes. Ils firent annoncer la nouvelle de leur triomphe à travers tout le pays des Philistins, dans les temples de leurs idoles et parmi la population. 10 Ils disposèrent les armes de Saül dans le temple de leurs déesses, les Astartés, et suspendirent son cadavre sur le rempart de Beth-Shân[c].
11 Lorsque les habitants de Yabesh en Galaad apprirent ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül, 12 les hommes les plus vaillants se mirent en route et marchèrent toute la nuit, ils enlevèrent le cadavre de Saül et ceux de ses fils du rempart de Beth-Shân et ils revinrent à Yabesh. Là, ils les brûlèrent. 13 Ensuite, ils rassemblèrent les ossements et les enterrèrent sous le tamaris de Yabesh, puis ils jeûnèrent pendant sept jours[d].

The Tragic End of Saul and His Sons(A)
31 Now (B)the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell slain on Mount (C)Gilboa. 2 Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons. And the Philistines killed (D)Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul’s sons. 3 (E)The battle became fierce against Saul. The archers [a]hit him, and he was severely wounded by the archers.
4 (F)Then Saul said to his armorbearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest (G)these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and [b]abuse me.”
But his armorbearer would not, (H)for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and (I)fell on it. 5 And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword, and died with him. 6 So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.
7 And when the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were on the other side of the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them. 8 So it happened the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 And they cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, to (J)proclaim it in the temple of their idols and among the people. 10 (K)Then they put his armor in the temple of the (L)Ashtoreths, and (M)they fastened his body to the wall of (N)Beth[c] Shan.
11 (O)Now when the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 (P)all the valiant men arose and traveled all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh and (Q)burned them there. 13 Then they took their bones and (R)buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, (S)and fasted seven days.

31 Filistrene stred mot Israel, og Israels menn flyktet for filistrene, og det lå mange falne på Gilboa-fjellet.
2 Og filistrene var like i hælene på Saul og hans sønner, og de drepte Jonatan og Abinadab og Malkisua, Sauls sønner.
3 Og striden blev hård der hvor Saul stod; bueskytterne kom over ham, og han blev grepet av redsel for skytterne.
4 Da sa Saul til sin våbensvenn: Dra ditt sverd og gjennembor mig med det, så ikke disse uomskårne skal komme og gjennembore mig og fare ille med mig! Men våbensvennen vilde ikke; han var for redd. Så tok Saul sitt sverd og styrtet sig i det.
5 Og da våbensvennen så at Saul var død, styrtet også han sig i sitt sverd og døde med ham.
6 Således døde Saul og hans tre sønner og hans våbensvenn og alle hans menn på en og samme dag.
7 Og da de israelitter som bodde på den andre side av dalen, og de som bodde på Jordan-siden, så at israelittene var flyktet, og at Saul og hans sønner var død, forlot de byene og flyktet; og filistrene kom og bosatte sig i dem.
8 Dagen efter kom filistrene for å plyndre de falne; da fant de Saul og hans tre sønner liggende på Gilboafjellet.
9 De hugg hodet av ham og røvet hans våben og sendte dem rundt omkring i filistrenes land for å forkynne det glade budskap i deres avguders templer og for folket.
10 Og hans våben la de i Astartetemplet, og hans kropp hengte de op på muren i Betsan.
11 Da innbyggerne i Jabes i Gilead fikk høre hvad filistrene hadde gjort med Saul,
12 tok alle våbenføre menn avsted og gikk hele natten; de tok Sauls og hans sønners kropper ned av Betsans mur, og da de var kommet til Jabes, brente de dem der.
13 Deres ben tok de og begravde under tamarisken i Jabes, og så holdt de faste i syv dager.

Saul Takes His Life(A)
31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.(B) 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons,(C) and they killed his sons Jonathan,(D) Abinadab and Malki-Shua.(E) 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded(F) him critically.
4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through,(G) or these uncircumcised(H) fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”
But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6 So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died(I) together that same day.
7 When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines(J) came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news(K) in the temple of their idols and among their people.(L) 10 They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(M) and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.(N)
11 When the people of Jabesh Gilead(O) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men(P) marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned(Q) them. 13 Then they took their bones(R) and buried them under a tamarisk(S) tree at Jabesh, and they fasted(T) seven days.(U)
