Muerte de Saúl(A)
31 Los filisteos fueron a la guerra contra Israel y los israelitas huyeron ante ellos. Muchos cayeron muertos en el monte Guilboa. 2 Entonces los filisteos se fueron en persecución de Saúl y lograron matar a sus hijos Jonatán, Abinadab y Malquisúa. 3 La batalla se intensificó contra Saúl y los arqueros lo alcanzaron con sus flechas. Al verse gravemente herido, 4 Saúl dijo a su escudero: «Saca la espada y mátame, no sea que esos incircuncisos me atraviesen cuando lleguen y se burlen de mí».
Pero el escudero estaba tan asustado que no quiso hacerlo, de modo que Saúl mismo tomó su espada y se dejó caer sobre ella. 5 Cuando el escudero vio que Saúl caía muerto, también él se arrojó sobre su propia espada y murió con él. 6 Así, en un mismo día murieron Saúl, sus tres hijos, su escudero y todos sus hombres.
7 Cuando los israelitas que vivían al otro lado del valle y del Jordán vieron que el ejército de Israel había huido, y que Saúl y sus hijos habían muerto, también ellos abandonaron sus ciudades y se dieron a la fuga. Así fue como los filisteos las ocuparon.
8 Al otro día, cuando los filisteos llegaron para despojar a los cadáveres, encontraron muertos a Saúl y a sus tres hijos en el monte Guilboa. 9 Entonces lo decapitaron, le quitaron las armas, y enviaron mensajeros por todo el país filisteo para que proclamaran la noticia en el templo de sus ídolos y ante todo el pueblo. 10 Después colocaron sus armas en el templo de la diosa Astarté, y su cadáver lo colgaron en el muro de Betseán.
11 Cuando los habitantes de Jabés de Galaad se enteraron de lo que habían hecho los filisteos con Saúl, 12 los más valientes de ellos caminaron toda la noche hacia Betseán, tomaron los cuerpos de Saúl y de sus hijos y, luego de bajarlos del muro, regresaron a Jabés. Allí los incineraron 13 y luego tomaron los huesos y los enterraron a la sombra del tamarisco de Jabés. Después de eso guardaron siete días de ayuno.

Saul and His Sons Slain
31 (A)Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell slain (B)on Mount Gilboa. 2 The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines [a]killed (C)Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul. 3 (D)The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers [b]hit him; and he was badly wounded by the archers. 4 (E)Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise (F)these uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and make sport of me.” But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. (G)So Saul took his sword and fell on it. 5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. 6 Thus Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together.
7 When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; then the Philistines came and lived in them.
8 It came about on the [c]next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They cut off his head and stripped off his weapons, and sent them [d]throughout the land of the Philistines, (H)to carry the good news (I)to the house of their idols and to the people. 10 They put his weapons in the [e]temple of (J)Ashtaroth, and (K)they fastened his body to the wall of (L)Beth-shan. 11 Now when (M)the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard [f]what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 (N)all the valiant men rose and walked all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came to Jabesh and (O)burned them there. 13 They took their bones and (P)buried them under (Q)the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and (R)fasted seven days.

31 Or i Filistei vennero a battaglia con Israele e gl'Israeliti fuggirono davanti ai Filistei, e caddero uccisi sul monte Ghilboa.
2 I Filistei inseguirono accanitamente Saul e i suoi figli; così i Filistei uccisero Gionathan, Abinadab e Malkishuah figli di Saul.
3 La battaglia si fece aspra contro Saul; gli arcieri lo raggiunsero ed egli fu gravemente ferito dagli arcieri.
4 Saul disse al suo scudiero: «Sfodera la tua spada e trafiggimi con essa, non vengano questi incirconcisi a trafiggermi e a farsi beffe di me». Ma il suo scudiero non volle, perché era tutto spaventato. Allora Saul prese la spada e vi si gettò sopra.
5 Quando lo scudiero vide che Saul era morto, si gettò anch'egli sulla propria spada e morì con lui.
6 Così in quel giorno morirono insieme Saul, i suoi tre figli il suo scudiero e tutti i suoi uomini.
7 Quando gli Israeliti che erano di là dalla valle e che erano di là dal Giordano videro che gli uomini d'Israele si erano dati alla fuga e che Saul e i suoi figli erano morti. abbandonarono le città e fuggirono. Allora vennero i Filistei e vi si stabilirono.
8 Il giorno dopo; i Filistei vennero a spogliare gli uccisi e trovarono Saul e i suoi tre figli caduti sul monte Ghilboa.
9 Essi tagliarono la testa a Saul, lo spogliarono della sua armatura e mandarono messaggeri per tutto il paese dei Filistei a portare la notizia nel tempio dei loro idoli e al popolo.
10 Collocarono quindi la sua armatura nel tempio di Ashtaroth, e appesero il suo cadavere alle mura di Beth-Shan.
11 Ma quando gli abitanti di Jabesh di Galaad vennero a sapere ciò che i Filistei avevano fatto a Saul,

Saul Takes His Life(A)
31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.(B) 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons,(C) and they killed his sons Jonathan,(D) Abinadab and Malki-Shua.(E) 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded(F) him critically.
4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through,(G) or these uncircumcised(H) fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”
But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6 So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died(I) together that same day.
7 When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines(J) came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news(K) in the temple of their idols and among their people.(L) 10 They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(M) and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.(N)
11 When the people of Jabesh Gilead(O) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men(P) marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned(Q) them. 13 Then they took their bones(R) and buried them under a tamarisk(S) tree at Jabesh, and they fasted(T) seven days.(U)
