Saul and His Sons Die
31 Meanwhile, the Philistines were fighting Israel at Mount Gilboa. Israel's soldiers ran from the Philistines, and many of them were killed. 2 The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. 3 The fighting was fierce around Saul, and he was badly wounded by enemy arrows.
4 Saul told the soldier who carried his weapons, “Kill me with your sword! I don't want these worthless Philistines to torture and make fun of me.” But the soldier was afraid to kill him.
Saul then took out his own sword; he stuck the blade into his stomach, and fell on it. 5 When the soldier knew that Saul was dead, he killed himself in the same way.
6 Saul was dead, his three sons were dead, and the soldier who carried his weapons was dead. They and all his soldiers died on that same day. 7 The Israelites on the other side of Jezreel Valley[a] and the other side of the Jordan learned that Saul and his sons were dead. They saw that the Israelite army had run away. So they ran away too, and the Philistines moved into the towns the Israelites had left behind.
8 The day after the battle, when the Philistines returned to the battlefield to take the weapons of the dead Israelite soldiers, they found Saul and his three sons lying dead on Mount Gilboa. 9-10 The Philistines cut off Saul's head and pulled off his armor. Then they put his armor in the temple of the goddess Astarte, and they nailed his body to the city wall of Beth-Shan. They also sent messengers everywhere in Philistia to spread the good news in the temples of their idols and among their people.
11 The people who lived in Jabesh in Gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul's body. 12 So one night, some brave men from Jabesh went to Beth-Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons, then brought them back to Jabesh and burned them. 13 They buried the bones under a small tree in Jabesh, and for seven days, they went without eating to show their sorrow.

31 Filistenii(A) s-au luptat cu Israel, şi bărbaţii lui Israel au luat-o la fugă dinaintea filistenilor şi au căzut ucişi pe muntele Ghilboa(B). 2 Filistenii au urmărit pe Saul şi pe fiii lui şi au ucis pe Ionatan(C), Abinadab şi Malchişua, fiii lui Saul. 3 Saul a fost prins în toiul(D) luptei; arcaşii l-au ajuns şi l-au rănit greu. 4 Saul(E) a zis atunci celui ce-i ducea armele: „Scoate-ţi sabia şi străpunge-mă, ca nu cumva aceşti netăiaţi(F) împrejur să vină să mă străpungă şi să-şi bată joc de mine.” Cel ce-i ducea armele n-a voit, căci îi era(G) teamă. Şi Saul şi-a luat sabia şi s-a aruncat(H) în ea. 5 Cel ce ducea armele lui Saul, văzându-l mort, s-a aruncat şi el în sabia lui şi a murit împreună cu el. 6 Astfel au pierit în acelaşi timp şi în aceeaşi zi Saul şi cei trei fii ai lui, cel ce-i purta armele şi toţi oamenii lui. 7 Cei din Israel care erau dincolo de vale şi dincolo de Iordan, văzând că oamenii lui Israel fugeau şi că Saul şi fiii lui muriseră, şi-au părăsit cetăţile şi au luat-o şi ei la fugă. Şi filistenii au venit şi s-au aşezat în ele. 8 A doua zi, filistenii au venit să dezbrace pe cei morţi şi au găsit pe Saul şi pe cei trei fii ai lui căzuţi pe muntele Ghilboa. 9 Au tăiat capul lui Saul şi i-au luat armele. Apoi au trimis să dea de veste(I) prin toată ţara filistenilor, în casele idolilor lor şi în popor. 10 Au pus(J) armele lui Saul în casa Astarteelor(K) şi i-au atârnat trupul(L) pe zidurile Bet-Şanului(M). 11 Când au auzit(N) locuitorii Iabesului din Galaad ce au făcut filistenii lui Saul, 12 toţi vitejii s-au sculat(O), au mers toată noaptea şi au luat de pe zidurile Bet-Şanului trupul lui Saul şi trupurile fiilor lui. Apoi s-au întors la Iabes, unde le-au ars(P); 13 le-au luat oasele şi le-au îngropat(Q) sub stejarul din Iabes. Şi au postit(R) şapte zile.

Saul Takes His Life(A)
31 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; the Israelites fled before them, and many fell dead on Mount Gilboa.(B) 2 The Philistines were in hot pursuit of Saul and his sons,(C) and they killed his sons Jonathan,(D) Abinadab and Malki-Shua.(E) 3 The fighting grew fierce around Saul, and when the archers overtook him, they wounded(F) him critically.
4 Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and run me through,(G) or these uncircumcised(H) fellows will come and run me through and abuse me.”
But his armor-bearer was terrified and would not do it; so Saul took his own sword and fell on it. 5 When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him. 6 So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died(I) together that same day.
7 When the Israelites along the valley and those across the Jordan saw that the Israelite army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their towns and fled. And the Philistines came and occupied them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines(J) came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news(K) in the temple of their idols and among their people.(L) 10 They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths(M) and fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan.(N)
11 When the people of Jabesh Gilead(O) heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all their valiant men(P) marched through the night to Beth Shan. They took down the bodies of Saul and his sons from the wall of Beth Shan and went to Jabesh, where they burned(Q) them. 13 Then they took their bones(R) and buried them under a tamarisk(S) tree at Jabesh, and they fasted(T) seven days.(U)
