30 Cuando David y sus hombres vinieron a Siclag al tercer día, los de Amalec habían invadido el Neguev y a Siclag, y habían asolado a Siclag y le habían prendido fuego. 2 Y se habían llevado cautivas a las mujeres y a todos los que estaban allí, desde el menor hasta el mayor; pero a nadie habían dado muerte, sino se los habían llevado al seguir su camino. 3 Vino, pues, David con los suyos a la ciudad, y he aquí que estaba quemada, y sus mujeres y sus hijos e hijas habían sido llevados cautivos. 4 Entonces David y la gente que con él estaba alzaron su voz y lloraron, hasta que les faltaron las fuerzas para llorar. 5 Las dos mujeres de David, Ahinoam jezreelita y Abigail la que fue mujer de Nabal el de Carmel, también eran cautivas.(A) 6 Y David se angustió mucho, porque el pueblo hablaba de apedrearlo, pues todo el pueblo estaba en amargura de alma, cada uno por sus hijos y por sus hijas; mas David se fortaleció en Jehová su Dios.
7 Y dijo David al sacerdote Abiatar(B) hijo de Ahimelec: Yo te ruego que me acerques el efod. Y Abiatar acercó el efod a David. 8 Y David consultó a Jehová, diciendo: ¿Perseguiré a estos merodeadores? ¿Los podré alcanzar? Y él le dijo: Síguelos, porque ciertamente los alcanzarás, y de cierto librarás a los cautivos. 9 Partió, pues, David, él y los seiscientos hombres que con él estaban, y llegaron hasta el torrente de Besor, donde se quedaron algunos. 10 Y David siguió adelante con cuatrocientos hombres; porque se quedaron atrás doscientos, que cansados no pudieron pasar el torrente de Besor.
11 Y hallaron en el campo a un hombre egipcio, el cual trajeron a David, y le dieron pan, y comió, y le dieron a beber agua. 12 Le dieron también un pedazo de masa de higos secos y dos racimos de pasas. Y luego que comió, volvió en él su espíritu; porque no había comido pan ni bebido agua en tres días y tres noches. 13 Y le dijo David: ¿De quién eres tú, y de dónde eres? Y respondió el joven egipcio: Yo soy siervo de un amalecita, y me dejó mi amo hoy hace tres días, porque estaba yo enfermo; 14 pues hicimos una incursión a la parte del Neguev que es de los cereteos, y de Judá, y al Neguev de Caleb; y pusimos fuego a Siclag. 15 Y le dijo David: ¿Me llevarás tú a esa tropa? Y él dijo: Júrame por Dios que no me matarás, ni me entregarás en mano de mi amo, y yo te llevaré a esa gente.
16 Lo llevó, pues; y he aquí que estaban desparramados sobre toda aquella tierra, comiendo y bebiendo y haciendo fiesta, por todo aquel gran botín que habían tomado de la tierra de los filisteos y de la tierra de Judá. 17 Y los hirió David desde aquella mañana hasta la tarde del día siguiente; y no escapó de ellos ninguno, sino cuatrocientos jóvenes que montaron sobre los camellos y huyeron. 18 Y libró David todo lo que los amalecitas habían tomado, y asimismo libertó David a sus dos mujeres. 19 Y no les faltó cosa alguna, chica ni grande, así de hijos como de hijas, del robo, y de todas las cosas que les habían tomado; todo lo recuperó David. 20 Tomó también David todas las ovejas y el ganado mayor; y trayéndolo todo delante, decían: Este es el botín de David.
21 Y vino David a los doscientos hombres que habían quedado cansados y no habían podido seguir a David, a los cuales habían hecho quedar en el torrente de Besor; y ellos salieron a recibir a David y al pueblo que con él estaba. Y cuando David llegó a la gente, les saludó con paz. 22 Entonces todos los malos y perversos de entre los que habían ido con David, respondieron y dijeron: Porque no fueron con nosotros, no les daremos del botín que hemos quitado, sino a cada uno su mujer y sus hijos; que los tomen y se vayan. 23 Y David dijo: No hagáis eso, hermanos míos, de lo que nos ha dado Jehová, quien nos ha guardado, y ha entregado en nuestra mano a los merodeadores que vinieron contra nosotros. 24 ¿Y quién os escuchará en este caso? Porque conforme a la parte del que desciende a la batalla, así ha de ser la parte del que queda con el bagaje; les tocará parte igual. 25 Desde aquel día en adelante fue esto por ley y ordenanza en Israel, hasta hoy.
26 Y cuando David llegó a Siclag, envió del botín a los ancianos de Judá, sus amigos, diciendo: He aquí un presente para vosotros del botín de los enemigos de Jehová. 27 Lo envió a los que estaban en Bet-el, en Ramot del Neguev, en Jatir, 28 en Aroer, en Sifmot, en Estemoa, 29 en Racal, en las ciudades de Jerameel, en las ciudades del ceneo, 30 en Horma, en Corasán, en Atac, 31 en Hebrón, y en todos los lugares donde David había estado con sus hombres.

30 Al tercer día, David y sus hombres fueron a Siclag, y se dieron cuenta de que los amalecitas habían invadido el Néguev, y de que a Siclag la habían asolado y le habían prendido fuego. 2 Habían capturado a las mujeres y a todos los que vivían allí, chicos y grandes, aunque no habían matado a nadie; simplemente se los habían llevado cautivos. 3 Cuando David y sus hombres llegaron a Siclag y vieron que la ciudad había sido incendiada y que las mujeres y sus hijos habían sido capturados, 4 se pusieron tan tristes que lloraron a voz en cuello, hasta que se cansaron. 5 Entre las cautivas estaban las dos mujeres de David, es decir, Ajinoán la jezreelita y Abigaíl, la viuda de Nabal.(A) 6 David se angustió porque todo el pueblo quería apedrearlo, pues les dolía haber perdido a sus hijas y a sus hijos, pero halló fuerzas en el Señor su Dios. 7 Entonces llamó al sacerdote Abiatar(B) hijo de Ajimélec, y le dijo:
«Te ruego que me traigas el efod.»
Abiatar se lo llevó, 8 y David consultó al Señor. Le preguntó:
«¿Debo perseguir a esa banda de malvados? ¿Podré darles alcance?»
Y el Señor le dijo:
«Ve tras ellos, porque les darás alcance y podrás liberar a los cautivos.»
9 David partió entonces con sus seiscientos hombres, y llegaron hasta el torrente de Besor, donde se quedaron unos cuantos. 10 Los que siguieron adelante con David fueron cuatrocientos hombres, pues doscientos de ellos estaban tan cansados que no pudieron cruzar el torrente. 11 Y esos que siguieron hallaron en el campo a un egipcio, y lo llevaron ante David; lo alimentaron con pan, y le dieron a beber agua. 12 También le dieron pan de higos secos y dos racimos de uvas pasas, y el egipcio comió y recobró el ánimo, pues hacía tres días con sus noches que no había comido ni bebido nada. 13 Luego, David le preguntó:
«¿Quién eres, y de dónde vienes?»
Y el joven egipcio respondió:
«Sirvo a un amalecita, pero me abandonó hace tres días porque me vio muy mal, 14 pues habíamos hecho una incursión al Néguev de los cretenses y de Judá, y también al Néguev de Caleb, y luego le prendimos fuego a Siclag.»
15 Y David le preguntó:
«¿Me puedes llevar hasta esa tropa?»
Y el egipcio dijo:
«Lo haré, si me juras que no me matarás ni me entregarás a mi amo. Sólo así te llevaré hasta esa gente.»
16 Y como David se lo juró, el egipcio lo llevó adonde estaban ellos. Cuando llegaron, David vio a la tropa esparcida y en completo desorden. Estaban comiendo y bebiendo, y haciendo una gran fiesta con todo el botín que habían tomado de los filisteos y de la tierra de Judá. 17 David, aprovechando su descuido, los hirió de muerte durante todo ese día y hasta la tarde del día siguiente, sin dejar con vida más que a cuatrocientos jóvenes que huyeron montados en sus camellos. 18 Después de que David recuperó todo lo que los amalecitas habían robado, liberó también a sus dos mujeres. 19 David recuperó todo, sin que le faltara absolutamente nada, por pequeña que fuera, y los hijos y las hijas las devolvió David a sus padres. 20 También se apoderó de las ovejas y del ganado mayor, y como lo iba arriando, todos decían que era el botín de David.
21 Cuando David llegó al torrente de Besor, los doscientos hombres que por cansancio no habían podido acompañarlo salieron a recibirlo, y al verlos David, los saludó en paz. 22 Pero entre los soldados que habían ido con David a la batalla, había algunos que eran egoístas y malvados, que dijeron:
«A éstos no les corresponde nada del botín que capturamos. Que tomen a sus mujeres y a sus hijos, y que se vayan.»
23 Pero David les dijo:
«No se porten así, hermanos míos. El Señor nos ha protegido y nos ha permitido recuperar lo que esa banda de malvados que nos atacó nos había arrebatado. 24 ¿Quién va a darles la razón en este caso? El mismo derecho tiene el que entra en combate como el que se queda al cuidado del bagaje. Todos merecen recibir lo mismo.»
25 Y desde aquel día y hasta la fecha, esto quedó establecido como una ley y ordenanza en Israel.
26 Cuando David llegó a Siclag, tomó parte del botín y lo repartió entre sus amigos, los ancianos de Judá, junto con este mensaje: «Aquí tienen este presente. Se lo quitamos a los enemigos del Señor, y es para ustedes.»
27 El regalo se lo envió a los que vivían en Betel, en Ramot del Néguev, en Jatir, 28 en Aroer, en Sifmot, en Estemoa, 29 en Racal, en las ciudades de Yeramel, en las ciudades de los quenitas, 30 en Jormá, en Corasán, en Atac, 31 en Hebrón, y en todos los lugares donde David había estado con sus hombres.

David’s Conflict with the Amalekites
30 Now it happened, when David and his men came to (A)Ziklag, on the third day, that the (B)Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, 2 and had taken captive the (C)women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way. 3 So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire; and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. 4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept, until they had no more power to weep. 5 And David’s two (D)wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite, had been taken captive. 6 Now David was greatly distressed, for (E)the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was [a]grieved, every man for his sons and his daughters. (F)But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
7 (G)Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And (H)Abiathar brought the ephod to David. 8 (I)So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”
And He answered him, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.”
9 So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him, and came to the Brook Besor, where those stayed who were left behind. 10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men; (J)for two hundred stayed behind, who were so weary that they could not cross the Brook Besor.
11 Then they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David; and they gave him bread and he ate, and they let him drink water. 12 And they gave him a piece of (K)a cake of figs and two clusters of raisins. So (L)when he had eaten, his strength came back to him; for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water for three days and three nights. 13 Then David said to him, “To whom do you belong, and where are you from?”
And he said, “I am a young man from Egypt, servant of an Amalekite; and my master left me behind, because three days ago I fell sick. 14 We made an invasion of the southern area of (M)the Cherethites, in the territory which belongs to Judah, and of the southern area (N)of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.”
15 And David said to him, “Can you take me down to this troop?”
So he said, “Swear to me by God that you will neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my (O)master, and I will take you down to this troop.”
16 And when he had brought him down, there they were, spread out over all the land, (P)eating and drinking and dancing, because of all the great spoil which they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from the land of Judah. 17 Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped, except four hundred young men who rode on camels and fled. 18 So David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away, and David rescued his two wives. 19 And nothing of theirs was lacking, either small or great, sons or daughters, spoil or anything which they had taken from them; (Q)David recovered all. 20 Then David took all the flocks and herds they had driven before those other livestock, and said, “This is David’s spoil.”
21 Now David came to the (R)two hundred men who had been so weary that they could not follow David, whom they also had made to stay at the Brook Besor. So they went out to meet David and to meet the people who were with him. And when David came near the people, he [b]greeted them. 22 Then all the wicked and (S)worthless[c] men of those who went with David answered and said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not give them any of the spoil that we have recovered, except for every man’s wife and children, that they may lead them away and depart.”
23 But David said, “My brethren, you shall not do so with what the Lord has given us, who has preserved us and delivered into our hand the troop that came against us. 24 For who will heed you in this matter? But (T)as his part is who goes down to the battle, so shall his part be who stays by the supplies; they shall share alike.” 25 So it was, from that day forward; he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel to this day.
26 Now when David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the [d]spoil to the elders of Judah, to his friends, saying, “Here is a present for you from the spoil of the enemies of the Lord”— 27 to those who were in Bethel, those who were in (U)Ramoth of the South, those who were in (V)Jattir, 28 those who were in (W)Aroer, those who were in (X)Siphmoth, those who were in (Y)Eshtemoa, 29 those who were in Rachal, those who were in the cities of (Z)the Jerahmeelites, those who were in the cities of the (AA)Kenites, 30 those who were in (AB)Hormah, those who were in [e]Chorashan, those who were in Athach, 31 those who were in (AC)Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were accustomed to (AD)rove.

David Destroys the Amalekites
30 David and his men reached Ziklag(A) on the third day. Now the Amalekites(B) had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and burned(C) it, 2 and had taken captive the women and everyone else in it, both young and old. They killed none of them, but carried them off as they went on their way.
3 When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive.(D) 4 So David and his men wept(E) aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5 David’s two wives(F) had been captured—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. 6 David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning(G) him; each one was bitter(H) in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength(I) in the Lord his God.
7 Then David said to Abiathar(J) the priest, the son of Ahimelek, “Bring me the ephod.(K)” Abiathar brought it to him, 8 and David inquired(L) of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?”
“Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed(M) in the rescue.(N)”
9 David and the six hundred men(O) with him came to the Besor Valley, where some stayed behind. 10 Two hundred of them were too exhausted(P) to cross the valley, but David and the other four hundred continued the pursuit.
11 They found an Egyptian in a field and brought him to David. They gave him water to drink and food to eat— 12 part of a cake of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate and was revived,(Q) for he had not eaten any food or drunk any water for three days and three nights.
13 David asked him, “Who do you belong to? Where do you come from?”
He said, “I am an Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite.(R) My master abandoned me when I became ill three days ago. 14 We raided the Negev of the Kerethites,(S) some territory belonging to Judah and the Negev of Caleb.(T) And we burned(U) Ziklag.”
15 David asked him, “Can you lead me down to this raiding party?”
He answered, “Swear to me before God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master,(V) and I will take you down to them.”
16 He led David down, and there they were, scattered over the countryside, eating, drinking and reveling(W) because of the great amount of plunder(X) they had taken from the land of the Philistines and from Judah. 17 David fought(Y) them from dusk until the evening of the next day, and none of them got away, except four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.(Z) 18 David recovered(AA) everything the Amalekites had taken, including his two wives. 19 Nothing was missing: young or old, boy or girl, plunder or anything else they had taken. David brought everything back. 20 He took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, “This is David’s plunder.”
21 Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted(AB) to follow him and who were left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him. As David and his men approached, he asked them how they were. 22 But all the evil men and troublemakers among David’s followers said, “Because they did not go out with us, we will not share with them the plunder we recovered. However, each man may take his wife and children and go.”
23 David replied, “No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the Lord has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiding party that came against us. 24 Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike.(AC)” 25 David made this a statute and ordinance for Israel from that day to this.
26 When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to the elders of Judah, who were his friends, saying, “Here is a gift(AD) for you from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies.”
27 David sent it to those who were in Bethel,(AE) Ramoth(AF) Negev and Jattir;(AG) 28 to those in Aroer,(AH) Siphmoth,(AI) Eshtemoa(AJ) 29 and Rakal; to those in the towns of the Jerahmeelites(AK) and the Kenites;(AL) 30 to those in Hormah,(AM) Bor Ashan,(AN) Athak 31 and Hebron;(AO) and to those in all the other places where he and his men had roamed.
