Trouble on David’s Return to Ziklag
30 When David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev[a] and Ziklag. They had attacked Ziklag and set it on fire. 2 They took the women in it captive, from young to old.[b] They did not kill anyone. Instead, they carried them off and went on their way. 3 David and his men came to the town, and it had been burned down. Their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive. 4 Then David and the people who were with him lifted their voices and cried until they had no more strength left to cry. 5 David’s two wives, Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail, Nabal’s former[c] wife, had been captured. 6 David was in great danger[d] because all the people were bitter because of their sons and daughters, and they were talking about stoning him. But David found strength[e] in the Lord his God.
David Pursues the Amalekites
7 David told Ahimelech’s son Abiathar the priest, “Bring me the ephod.”[f] So Abiathar brought the ephod to David. 8 David inquired of the Lord: “Shall I pursue this raiding party?[g] Will I overtake them?”
The Lord[h] told David,[i] “Pursue them! You will definitely overtake them and rescue the captives.”[j] 9 So David and 600 men who were with him set out. They came to the Wadi[k] Besor where those who were left behind stayed. 10 David and 400 men continued the pursuit,[l] while the 200 men who were too exhausted to cross over the Wadi[m] Besor remained there.[n]
An Egyptian Leads David to the Amalekites
11 They found an Egyptian man in the field, and they took him to David. They gave him food to eat and provided water for him. 12 They gave him part of a fig cake and two bunches of raisins. After he had eaten, he revived,[o] since he had neither eaten food nor had he drunk water for three days and three nights. 13 David told him, “To whom do you belong and where are you from?”
The Egyptian[p] replied, “I’m a young Egyptian man, the slave of an Amalekite man. My master abandoned me, because I got sick three days ago. 14 We raided the Negev[q] of the Cherethites, the territory that belongs to Judah,[r] and the Negev[s] of Caleb, and we set Ziklag on fire.”
15 David asked him, “Will you take me to this raiding party?”[t]
He said, “Swear to me by God that you won’t kill me or turn me over to my master, and I’ll take you to the raiding party.”[u]
David Defeats the Amalekites
16 The Egyptian[v] led him to the camp,[w] and there the Amalekites[x] were spread out over the whole area, eating, drinking, and celebrating with the great amount of spoil they had taken from the territory belonging to the Philistines and to Judah. 17 David struck them down from twilight until the evening of the next day, and not one of them escaped except for 400 young men who mounted camels and fled. 18 David rescued everyone whom the Amalekites[y] had captured, including[z] his two wives. 19 Nothing of theirs was missing, whether small or large, sons or daughters, spoil, or anything that they had taken for themselves—David brought back everything. 20 David took all the rest of[aa] the sheep and cattle, driving them ahead of their rescued livestock.[ab] People said about all this,[ac] “This is David’s spoil.”
David Divides the Spoil
21 David came to the 200 men who were too exhausted to follow him[ad] and who had been left at the Wadi[ae] Besor. They came out to meet David and the people who were with him. As David approached the people, he asked them how they were doing.[af] 22 At this point, all the wicked and worthless men of the group who had gone with David answered, “Because they didn’t go with us, we won’t give them any of the spoil that we recovered, except that each person may take his wife and his children and go.”
23 David said, “No, you won’t do this, my brothers, with what the Lord has given us. He guarded us and gave the raiding party[ag] that came against us into our hand. 24 Who will listen to you in this matter? Indeed, the share of those who went down into battle and the share of those who stayed with the supplies will be the same. They’ll share alike.” 25 From that day forward he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel, and it remains[ah] to this present[ai] day.
David Shares the Spoil with the People of Judah
26 David came to Ziklag, and he sent some of the spoil to the elders of Judah, and to his friends, telling them, “Look, this is a gift for you from the spoil of the enemies of the Lord 27 in Bethel, Ramoth-negev, Jattir, 28 Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa, 29 Rachal, in the Jerahmeelite towns, in the Kenite towns, 30 in Hormah, Bor-ashan, Athach, 31 Hebron, and for all those places where David and his men had frequented.”

30 Lorsque David arriva le surlendemain avec ses hommes à Tsiqlag, il la trouva ravagée et incendiée ; les Amalécites avaient fait une incursion dans le Néguev et contre Tsiqlag. 2 Ils s’étaient emparés des femmes et de ceux[a] qui se trouvaient dans la ville, quelle que soit leur condition sociale, sans toutefois tuer personne. Ils les avaient emmenés et avaient continué leur chemin. 3 Quand David et ses compagnons arrivèrent à la ville, ils découvrirent donc qu’elle avait été incendiée et que leurs femmes, leurs fils et leurs filles avaient été emmenés captifs. 4 David et ses compagnons se mirent à crier et à pleurer jusqu’à en être épuisés. 5 Les deux femmes de David, Ahinoam de Jizréel et Abigaïl, veuve de Nabal de Karmel, étaient parmi les prisonnières.
6 David était dans une situation très angoissante parce que ses compagnons étaient pleins d’amertume en pensant chacun à ses fils et à ses filles, et ils parlaient de le lapider. Mais David puisa de nouvelles forces en se confiant en l’Eternel son Dieu. 7 Il demanda au prêtre Abiatar, fils d’Ahimélek, d’apporter l’éphod servant à consulter l’Eternel. Abiatar le lui présenta. 8 David interrogea l’Eternel en lui demandant : Dois-je poursuivre cette bande ? Parviendrai-je à les rattraper ?
Et l’Eternel lui répondit : Poursuis-les, car tu vas les rattraper et tout récupérer.
9 David se mit en route avec ses six cents hommes, ils parvinrent au torrent de Besor et certains s’arrêtèrent là. 10 David continua la poursuite avec quatre cents hommes ; les deux cents autres, trop fatigués pour traverser le torrent de Besor, restèrent sur place.
11 Les hommes rencontrèrent dans la campagne un Egyptien, ils l’amenèrent à David, lui donnèrent du pain, qu’il mangea, et de l’eau. 12 Puis ils lui donnèrent quelques figues sèches et deux gâteaux de raisins secs. Quand il les eut mangés, il retrouva ses esprits, car il n’avait ni mangé ni bu pendant trois jours et trois nuits. 13 David l’interrogea : Qui est ton maître ? D’où viens-tu ?
– Je suis un jeune Egyptien, répondit-il, esclave d’un Amalécite ; mon maître m’a abandonné parce que je suis tombé malade il y a trois jours. 14 Nous venions de faire une razzia dans le sud du pays des Kérétiens[b], dans le territoire de Juda et dans le désert de Caleb ; nous avons aussi incendié Tsiqlag.
15 David lui demanda : Veux-tu me guider jusqu’à cette bande ?
– Jure-moi par Dieu que tu ne me tueras pas et que tu ne me livreras pas à mon maître, lui répondit l’Egyptien, et je te conduirai jusqu’à eux.
16 Il guida donc David jusqu’aux Amalécites qu’ils trouvèrent éparpillés sur toute la contrée en train de manger, de boire et de danser à cause de l’énorme butin qu’ils avaient rapporté du pays des Philistins et de celui de Juda. 17 David les attaqua à l’aube et les battit jusqu’au lendemain soir. Aucun d’eux ne lui échappa, excepté quatre cents jeunes gens qui réussirent à fuir sur des chameaux. 18 David récupéra tout ce que les Amalécites avaient pris. Il délivra ainsi ses deux femmes. 19 Personne ne manqua à l’appel, ni petit ni grand, ni fils ni fille ; ils trouvèrent également tout le butin qui leur avait été enlevé. David ramena tout. 20 Il s’empara aussi de tout le gros et le menu bétail. Ceux qui marchaient en tête de ce troupeau disaient : Voilà le butin de David !
Le partage du butin
21 David revint vers les deux cents hommes qui avaient été trop fatigués pour le suivre et qui étaient restés au torrent de Besor. Ils vinrent au-devant de David et de ceux qui l’accompagnaient. David s’approcha d’eux et les salua. 22 A ce moment, un groupe de vauriens et de mauvais sujets qui avaient accompagné David se mirent à dire : Puisqu’ils ne sont pas venus avec nous, on ne leur donnera rien du butin que nous avons récupéré, sauf leurs femmes et leurs enfants. Qu’ils les emmènent et qu’ils s’en aillent !
23 Mais David dit : Mes amis, n’agissez pas ainsi avec ce que l’Eternel nous a donné ; il nous a gardés et il nous a donné la victoire sur la bande des pillards qui nous avaient attaqués. 24 Qui donc pourrait vous approuver dans cette affaire ? La part de celui qui a gardé le camp sera la même que celle du soldat qui a participé au combat. Ils partageront équitablement.
25 De fait, à partir de ce jour, cette manière d’agir fut érigée comme loi et règle en Israël. Elle est encore en vigueur aujourd’hui.
David envoie des présents aux responsables de Juda
26 David rentra à Tsiqlag et il envoya des parts du butin aux responsables de Juda qui étaient ses amis. Il y joignit le message suivant : Voici un présent pour vous provenant du butin pris aux ennemis de l’Eternel.
27 Il fit cet envoi aux responsables de Béthel[c], de Ramoth du Néguev, de Yattir, 28 d’Aroër, de Siphmoth, d’Eshtemoa, 29 de Rakal, des villes des Yerahmeélites, de celles des Qéniens, 30 aux responsables de Horma, de Bor-Ashân, d’Atak, 31 d’Hébron, et de tous les endroits où David et ses hommes avaient passé.

„Esküdj meg Istenre, hogy nem ölsz meg, és nem szolgáltatsz ki a gazdámnak, akkor odavezetlek!” — válaszolta az egyiptomi.
16 El is vezette Dávidot és csapatát az amálekiek táborához, ahol éppen nagy mulatozás folyt, mert ünnepelték a gazdag zsákmányt, amelyet a filiszteusok földjéről és Júdából szereztek. Ettek, ittak, táncoltak, és elterültek a földön. 17 Dávid és katonái lecsaptak rájuk, és hajnaltól másnap estig vágták őket. Mindössze négyszáz fiatal férfi maradt életben az amálekiek közül — ezek is csak azért, mert a tevéikre ültek, és elmenekültek.
18 Így szerezte vissza Dávid mindazt, amit az amálekiek elraboltak. Két feleségét is kiszabadította. 19 Semmi sem hiányzott, Dávid mindent visszaszerzett: a feleségeket, gyermekeket, idős rokonokat és minden vagyonukat. 20 Ezen kívül nagy zsákmányt is szerzett: juhnyájakat és marhacsordákat, amelyeket azután az emberek a menet élén hajtottak hazafelé. Azt mondták erről: „Nézzétek! Ez mind Dávid zsákmánya!”
21 Hazafelé menet elérkeztek a Beszór-patakhoz, ahol már várta őket az a 200 harcos, akiket Dávid hátrahagyott, mert nagyon fáradtak voltak. Mikor ezek látták, hogy Dávid és serege közeledik, eléjük mentek, és Dávid köszöntötte őket. 22 Voltak azonban Dávid kíséretében olyan rosszindulatú és semmirekellő emberek is, akik így beszéltek: „Ezek itt kétszázan nem jöttek velünk harcolni! 23 Dávid azonban ezt mondta nekik: „Nem, testvéreim! Ezt nem tehetitek velük! Gondoljátok meg, hogy az Örökkévaló épségben megőrzött bennünket, és kezünkbe adta a rablóbandát, és a nagy zsákmányt is! 24 Senki sem hallgatna rátok ebben. Inkább legyen így: mindannyian egyformán részesedjenek a zsákmányból! Aki eljött velünk harcolni, és aki a holmiknál maradt, az is egyformán kapjon belőle.” 25 Ettől fogva ez lett a rendelkezés és szokás Izráelben, és így van ez mind a mai napig.
26 Miután Dávid hazaérkezett Ciklágba, még Júda törzse vezetőinek, a barátainak is részt küldött a hadizsákmányból, s ezt üzente nekik: „Itt küldök számotokra ajándékot abból a zsákmányból, amelyet az Örökkévaló ellenségeitől vettünk el.”
27 Ilyen ajándékot kaptak Dávidtól a vezetők a következő városokban: Bétel, Rámót-Negev, Jattír, 28 Aróér, Szifmót, Estemóa, 29 Rákál, meg a jerahmeéliek és kéniek városai, 30 Horma, Bór-Ásán, Aták 31 és Hebron. Általában minden olyan város vezetőinek küldött ilyen ajándékot, ahol a csapatával korábban megfordult.

30 And it came to pass, when David and his men were come to Ziklag on the third day, that the Amalekites had invaded the south, and Ziklag, and smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
2 And had taken the women captives, that were therein: they slew not any, either great or small, but carried them away, and went on their way.
3 So David and his men came to the city, and, behold, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captives.
4 Then David and the people that were with him lifted up their voice and wept, until they had no more power to weep.
5 And David's two wives were taken captives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite.
6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.
8 And David enquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
9 So David went, he and the six hundred men that were with him, and came to the brook Besor, where those that were left behind stayed.
10 But David pursued, he and four hundred men: for two hundred abode behind, which were so faint that they could not go over the brook Besor.
11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;
12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights.
13 And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick.
14 We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.
15 And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company.
16 And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah.
17 And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.
18 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away: and David rescued his two wives.
19 And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
20 And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they drave before those other cattle, and said, This is David's spoil.
21 And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them.
22 Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
23 Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the Lord hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
24 For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
25 And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day.
26 And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the Lord;
