The Philistine Leaders Reject David
29 The Philistines gathered all their troops at Aphek, while Israel was camped at the spring in Jezreel. 2 The Philistine leaders were passing in review among[a] the military units,[b] and David and his men were among[c] them in the rear with Achish.
3 The Philistine leaders said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
Achish asked the Philistine leaders, “Isn’t this David, the servant of King Saul of Israel, who has been with me these days, or rather[d] these years? I’ve found no fault in him from the day he deserted[e] until now.”
4 But the Philistine leaders were angry with him, so they[f] pleaded with him, “Send the man back! Let him return to the[g] place you assigned him. He mustn’t go into battle with us. Otherwise, he may become our adversary in the battle! How could there be a better way for[h] this fellow to reconcile himself with his lord? Wouldn’t it be with the heads of these men? 5 Isn’t this the same[i] David about whom the maidens[j] sang when they were dancing,
‘Saul has struck down his thousands,
but David his ten thousands’?”
Achish Sends David Home
6 Then Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the Lord lives, you are trustworthy,[k] and it seems good to me for you to campaign[l] with me as part of the army. Indeed, I’ve not found any evil in you from the time you came to me until now.[m] But the leaders don’t approve of you. 7 Now return and go in peace, so you do nothing to displease the Philistine leaders.”
8 David told Achish, “What have I done, and what have you found in your servant from the time I came before you until this very moment,[n] that I shouldn’t go out and fight the enemies of your majesty?”[o]
9 Achish answered David, “I know that I’m pleased with you. You’re[p] like an angel of God. But the Philistine leaders have said, ‘He mustn’t go into battle with us.’ 10 Now, get up early in the morning along with your lord’s servants who came with you.[q] Get up early in the morning, and go as soon as you have light.” 11 So[r] David and his men got up early in the morning to return to Philistine territory, while the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

The Philistines Reject David
29 Then (A)the Philistines gathered together all their armies (B)at Aphek, and the Israelites encamped by a fountain which is in Jezreel. 2 And the (C)lords of the Philistines [a]passed in review by hundreds and by thousands, but (D)David and his men passed in review at the rear with Achish. 3 Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me (E)these days, or these years? And to this day I have (F)found no fault in him since he defected to me.”
4 But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, (G)“Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to (H)battle, lest (I)in the battle he become our adversary. For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these (J)men? 5 Is this not David, (K)of whom they sang to one another in dances, saying:
(L)‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “Surely, as the Lord lives, you have been upright, and (M)your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight. For to this day (N)I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you. 7 Therefore return now, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”
8 So David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And to this day what have you found in your servant as long as I have been with you, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9 Then Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight (O)as an angel of God; nevertheless (P)the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10 Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master’s servants (Q)who have come with [b]you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.”
11 So David and his men rose early to depart in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. (R)And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

Akish leur répondit : Ne reconnaissez-vous pas David qui avait été au service de Saül, roi d’Israël, mais qui, depuis un an ou deux, est chez moi ? Depuis qu’il s’est rallié à nous, je n’ai jamais rien eu à lui reprocher.
4 Mais les princes des Philistins se fâchèrent contre Akish et lui dirent : Renvoie cet homme dans la ville que tu lui as assignée. Il ne faut pas qu’il participe avec nous au combat, sinon il pourrait se retourner contre nous avec ses hommes en pleine bataille. N’est-ce pas au prix de la tête de nos gens qu’il pourrait regagner la faveur de son souverain ? 5 N’oublions pas que c’est pour David que les femmes chantaient en dansant : « Saül a frappé ses milliers, et David ses dizaines de milliers[b]. »
6 Finalement, Akish appela David et lui dit : Aussi vrai que l’Eternel est vivant, tu es un homme juste et j’aurais aimé que tu prennes part avec moi à cette expédition militaire, car je n’ai jamais rien eu à te reprocher, depuis que tu es venu chez moi jusqu’à ce jour ; mais tu n’es pas bien vu des autres princes philistins. 7 Maintenant donc, repars en paix chez toi, pour ne pas les indisposer.
8 David lui dit : Mais qu’ai-je donc fait pour que je ne puisse pas aller combattre les ennemis de mon seigneur le roi ? Qu’as-tu trouvé à reprocher à ton serviteur depuis le jour où je me suis mis à ton service jusqu’à maintenant ?
9 Akish répondit à David : Je le sais bien, car je t’ai apprécié comme un ange de Dieu ; seulement, les princes des Philistins m’ont dit : « Il ne participera pas à la bataille avec nous » ! 10 Maintenant, lève-toi de bon matin, toi et les serviteurs de ton maître, qui sont venus avec toi[c]. Levez-vous de bon matin dès qu’il fera clair et partez.
11 Le lendemain, David et ses hommes se levèrent de bonne heure pour se mettre en route et regagner la Philistie, tandis que les Philistins montèrent vers Jizréel.

29 Afék városánál gyűltek össze a filiszteusok, az izráeliek serege pedig a Jezréel melletti forrás közelében táborozott. 2 A filiszteusok seregének századai és ezredei mind a saját fejedelmeik vezetése alatt vonultak a hadjáratra. Dávid a csapatával Ákis király vezetése alatt vonult a sereg végén.
3 De a sereg vezérei ezt mondták Ákisnak: „Mit keresnek ezek a héberek közöttünk?”
Ákis védelmébe vette Dávidot: „Igaz, hogy Dávid régebben Saul király szolgája volt, de most már hosszú ideje velem van! Attól kezdve, hogy hozzám pártolt, nem találtam benne semmi kivetnivalót!”
4 De a sereg vezérei emiatt megharagudtak Ákisra, és követelték tőle: „Küldd vissza ezt az embert! Térjen haza abba a városba, amelyet kijelöltél neki! Semmi szín alatt nem jöhet velünk a hadjáratra. Ne legyen alkalma rá, hogy a csata közben ellenünk forduljon! Mivel tudná jobban visszaszerezni korábbi királya kegyeit, mint azzal, hogy halomra öldös bennünket? 5 Hiszen Dávid az, akiről táncolva énekelték az izráeli nők:

6 Ákis tehát kénytelen-kelletlen hívatta Dávidot, és ezt mondta neki: „Az élő Örökkévalóra esküszöm, hogy te becsületes és hűséges vagy hozzám! Ami engem illet, szeretném, ha velem tartanál ezen a hadjáraton, hiszen amióta hozzám jöttél, mind a mai napig nem találtam viselkedésedben semmi kivetnivalót. A filiszteusok fejedelmei is jó embernek tartanak téged.[a] 7 Mégis, menj vissza békességgel ebből a hadjáratból, és semmi olyat ne tégy, amit a filiszteusok vezetői nem helyeselnek!”
8 Dávid ezt kérdezte Ákistól: „De hát mi rosszat tettem? Mi rosszat találtál szolgádban, amióta csak veled vagyok? Miért nem mehetek én is, hogy uram, a király ellenségei ellen harcoljak?”
9 „Dávid, én tudom, hogy te olyan ártatlan és hűséges vagy, akár Isten angyala! De mit tegyek, ha a filiszteus sereg vezérei ragaszkodnak hozzá, hogy ne jöjj velünk a harcba, hanem térj vissza. 10 Ezért holnap korán reggel embereiddel együtt térjetek vissza abba a városba, amelyet számotokra kijelöltem!”
11 Így is történt: másnap reggel Dávid és csapata visszatért a filiszteusok földjére, a filiszteusok pedig tovább vonultak Jezréel felé.
