29 4 The princes of the Philistines cause David to be sent back from the battle against Israel, because they distrusted him.
1 So the Philistines were gathered together with all their armies in Aphek: and the Israelites pitched [a]by the fountain, which is in Jezreel.
2 And the [b]princes of the Philistines went forth by [c]hundreds and thousands, but David and his men came behind with Achish.
3 Then said the Princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David the servant of Saul the King of Israel, who hath been with me these days, [d]or these years, and I have found nothing in him, since he [e]dwelt with me unto this day?
4 But the princes of the Philistines were wroth with him, and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, (A)Send this fellow back, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest that in the battle he be an adversary to us: for wherewith should he obtain the favor of his master? should it not be with the [f]heads of these men?
5 Is not this David, of whom they sang in dances, saying, (B)Saul slew his thousand, and David his ten thousand?
6 ¶ Then Achish called David, and said unto him, As the Lord liveth, thou hast been upright and good in my sight, when thou [g]wentest out and in with me in the host, neither have I found evil with thee, since thou camest to me unto this day, but [h]the princes do not favor thee.
7 Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the princes of the Philistines.
8 ¶ And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant as long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may [i]not go and fight against the enemies of my Lord the King?
9 Achish then answered and said to David, I know thou pleasest me as an Angel of God: but the princes of the Philistines have said, Let him not go up with us to battle.
10 Wherefore now rise up early in the morning with thy [j]master’s servants that are come with thee: and when ye be up early, as soon as ye have light, depart.
11 So David and his men rose up early to depart in the morning, and to return into the land of the Philistines: and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

The Philistines Reject David
29 Then (A)the Philistines gathered together all their armies (B)at Aphek, and the Israelites encamped by a fountain which is in Jezreel. 2 And the (C)lords of the Philistines [a]passed in review by hundreds and by thousands, but (D)David and his men passed in review at the rear with Achish. 3 Then the princes of the Philistines said, “What are these Hebrews doing here?”
And Achish said to the princes of the Philistines, “Is this not David, the servant of Saul king of Israel, who has been with me (E)these days, or these years? And to this day I have (F)found no fault in him since he defected to me.”
4 But the princes of the Philistines were angry with him; so the princes of the Philistines said to him, (G)“Make this fellow return, that he may go back to the place which you have appointed for him, and do not let him go down with us to (H)battle, lest (I)in the battle he become our adversary. For with what could he reconcile himself to his master, if not with the heads of these (J)men? 5 Is this not David, (K)of whom they sang to one another in dances, saying:
(L)‘Saul has slain his thousands,
And David his ten thousands’?”
6 Then Achish called David and said to him, “Surely, as the Lord lives, you have been upright, and (M)your going out and your coming in with me in the army is good in my sight. For to this day (N)I have not found evil in you since the day of your coming to me. Nevertheless the lords do not favor you. 7 Therefore return now, and go in peace, that you may not displease the lords of the Philistines.”
8 So David said to Achish, “But what have I done? And to this day what have you found in your servant as long as I have been with you, that I may not go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9 Then Achish answered and said to David, “I know that you are as good in my sight (O)as an angel of God; nevertheless (P)the princes of the Philistines have said, ‘He shall not go up with us to the battle.’ 10 Now therefore, rise early in the morning with your master’s servants (Q)who have come with [b]you. And as soon as you are up early in the morning and have light, depart.”
11 So David and his men rose early to depart in the morning, to return to the land of the Philistines. (R)And the Philistines went up to Jezreel.

29 Het Filistijnse leger groepeerde zich op dat moment bij Afek, terwijl de Israëlieten hun kamp hadden opgeslagen bij de bronnen van Jizreël. 2 Toen de Filistijnse koningen hun troepen in compagnieën en bataljons daarheen hadden laten oprukken, marcheerden David en zijn mannen in gezelschap van koning Achis achterin de legereenheid. 3 De Filistijnse leiders wilden echter weten wat de Israëlieten daar deden. Koning Achis verklaarde: ‘Dit is David, de gevluchte dienaar van koning Saul van Israël. Hij is al jaren bij mij en ik heb sinds zijn komst nooit gemerkt dat hij niet te vertrouwen zou zijn.’ 4 Maar daar namen de legeraanvoerders geen genoegen mee. ‘Stuur hen terug!’ eisten zij kwaad. ‘Zij kunnen niet samen met ons de strijd in, het risico is te groot dat zij zich dan tegen ons keren. Het is toch duidelijk dat er geen betere manier is waarop hij weer bij zijn meester in de gunst kan komen, dan door ons tijdens de strijd aan te vallen met deze mannen? 5 Dit is toch dezelfde man over wie de Israëlitische vrouwen bij het dansen zongen: “Saul heeft zijn duizenden verslagen en David zijn tienduizenden!” ’ 6 Achis liet David en zijn mannen bij zich roepen en zei: ‘Ik zweer bij de Here dat ik het van harte meen wanneer ik u zeg dat u eerlijke mensen bent en ik vind dan ook dat u met ons leger mee zou moeten gaan. Ik heb immers vanaf het begin gemerkt dat u volledig te vertrouwen bent. Alleen zijn de andere leiders het daar niet mee eens. 7 Ga daarom maar stilletjes terug.’
8 ‘Waarom word ik op deze manier behandeld?’ wilde David weten. ‘Waarom mag ik niet tegen uw vijanden vechten?’ 9 Maar Achis was vastbesloten: ‘Wat mij betreft, ik bewonder u alsof u een engel van God was. Maar de leiders zijn er nu eenmaal tegen dat u met hen meedoet aan de strijd. 10 Sta morgen maar vroeg op en vertrek zodra het licht wordt.’ 11 Zo ging David ʼs morgens vroeg terug naar het land van de Filistijnen, terwijl het Filistijnse leger zijn weg naar Jizreël vervolgde.

Achish Sends David Back to Ziklag
29 The Philistines gathered(A) all their forces at Aphek,(B) and Israel camped by the spring in Jezreel.(C) 2 As the Philistine rulers marched with their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men were marching at the rear(D) with Achish. 3 The commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?”
Achish replied, “Is this not David,(E) who was an officer of Saul king of Israel? He has already been with me for over a year,(F) and from the day he left Saul until now, I have found no fault in him.”
4 But the Philistine commanders were angry with Achish and said, “Send(G) the man back, that he may return to the place you assigned him. He must not go with us into battle, or he will turn(H) against us during the fighting. How better could he regain his master’s favor than by taking the heads of our own men? 5 Isn’t this the David they sang about in their dances:
“‘Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands’?”(I)
6 So Achish called David and said to him, “As surely as the Lord lives, you have been reliable, and I would be pleased to have you serve with me in the army. From the day(J) you came to me until today, I have found no fault in you, but the rulers(K) don’t approve of you. 7 Now turn back and go in peace; do nothing to displease the Philistine rulers.”
8 “But what have I done?” asked David. “What have you found against your servant from the day I came to you until now? Why can’t I go and fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
9 Achish answered, “I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel(L) of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders(M) have said, ‘He must not go up with us into battle.’ 10 Now get up early, along with your master’s servants who have come with you, and leave(N) in the morning as soon as it is light.”
11 So David and his men got up early in the morning to go back to the land of the Philistines, and the Philistines went up to Jezreel.
