David Among the Philistines
27 David thought, “Some day Saul will destroy me. So the best thing I can do is escape. I’ll go to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop looking for me everywhere in Israel. His hand won’t be able to reach me.”
2 So David and his 600 men left Israel. They went to Achish, the king of Gath. He was the son of Maok. 3 David and his men made their homes in Gath near Achish. Each of David’s men had his family with him. David had his two wives with him. They were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail from Carmel. Abigail was Nabal’s widow. 4 Saul was told that David had run away to Gath. So he didn’t look for David anymore.
5 David said to Achish, “If you are pleased with me, give me a place in one of your country towns. I can live there. I don’t really need to live near you in the royal city.”
6 So on that day Achish gave David the town of Ziklag. It has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since that time. 7 David lived in Philistine territory for a year and four months.
8 Sometimes David and his men would go up and attack the Geshurites. At other times they would attack the Girzites or the Amalekites. All those people had lived in the land that reached all the way to Shur and Egypt. They had been there for a long time. 9 When David would attack an area, he wouldn’t leave a man or woman alive. But he would take their sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels and clothes. Then he would return to Achish.
10 Achish would ask, “Who did you attack today?” David would answer, “The people who live in the Negev Desert of Judah.” Or he would answer, “The people in the Negev Desert of Jerahmeel.” Or he would answer, “The people in the Negev Desert of the Kenites.” 11 David wouldn’t leave a man or woman alive to be brought back to Gath. He thought, “They might tell on us. They might tell Achish who we really attacked.” That’s what David did as long as he lived in Philistine territory. 12 Achish trusted David. He thought, “David’s own people, the Israelites, can’t stand him anymore. So he’ll be my servant for life.”

27 Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will despair of seeking me any longer within the borders of Israel, and I shall escape out of his hand.” 2 So David arose and went over, he and (A)the six hundred men who were with him, (B)to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, and David with (C)his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel, and Abigail of Carmel, Nabal's widow. 4 And when it was told Saul that David had fled to Gath, he no longer sought him.
5 Then David said to Achish, “If (D)I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be given me in one of the country towns, that I may dwell there. For why should your servant dwell in the royal city with you?” 6 So that day Achish gave him (E)Ziklag. Therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7 (F)And the number of the days that David lived in the country of the Philistines was a year and four months.
8 Now David (G)and his men went up and made raids against (H)the Geshurites, (I)the Girzites, and (J)the Amalekites, for these were the inhabitants of the land from of old, (K)as far as Shur, to the land of Egypt. 9 And David would strike the land and would leave neither man nor woman alive, but would take away the sheep, the oxen, the donkeys, the camels, and the garments, and come back to Achish. 10 When Achish asked, “Where have you (L)made a raid today?” David would say, “Against the Negeb of Judah,” or, “Against the Negeb of (M)the Jerahmeelites,” or, “Against the Negeb of (N)the Kenites.” 11 And David would leave neither man nor woman alive to bring news to Gath, thinking, “lest they should tell about us and say, ‘So David has done.’” Such was his custom all the while he lived in the country of the Philistines. 12 And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”

27 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.
4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.
10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.
11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.

27 David bleef echter bij zichzelf denken: ‘Op een dag krijgt Saul mij te pakken als ik in het land Israël blijf. Ik denk dat ik beter naar het gebied van de Filistijnen kan gaan tot Saul het opgeeft en mij niet langer achtervolgt, pas dan ben ik van hem verlost.’ 2,3 Zo trokken David en de zeshonderd mannen die bij hem waren met hun gezinnen naar Gath, waar zij onder bescherming van koning Achis konden wonen. David bleef in Gath met zijn twee vrouwen, Ahinoam uit Jizreël en Abigaïl uit Karmel, de weduwe van Nabal. 4 Dat nieuws kwam koning Saul al spoedig ter ore en hij staakte de achtervolging.
5 Op een dag zei David tegen koning Achis: ‘Als u het goedvindt, zouden wij liever in een van de steden op het platteland wonen dan hier in de koninklijke stad. Wij zijn immers slechts uw dienaren.’ 6 Achis schonk hem daarom de stad Ziklag, die tot op de dag van vandaag eigendom is van de koningen van Juda. 7 Zij bleven daar een jaar en vier maanden te midden van de Filistijnen wonen.
8 David en zijn mannen overvielen in die periode de Gesurieten, de Gizrieten en de Amalekieten, volken die sinds het grijze verleden bij Sur langs de weg naar Egypte woonden. 9 Zij doodden alle mensen in het gebied dat zij overvielen en eigenden zich de schapen, ossen, ezels, kamelen en kleding toe. Dan keerden zij naar hun thuisbasis terug 10 en vroeg koning Achis altijd: ‘Waar hebt u vandaag een overval gepleegd?’ En David antwoordde dan: ‘In het zuiden van Juda’ of ‘Bij de Jerachmeëlieten’ of ‘Bij de Kenieten.’ 11 David had ervoor gezorgd dat niemand in leven bleef die naar Gath kon komen om te vertellen waar hij werkelijk was geweest. Dit gebeurde steeds weer in de periode dat hij bij de Filistijnen woonde. 12 Koning Achis geloofde David en dacht dat de Israëlieten hem zo langzamerhand wel intens moesten haten. ‘Nu zal hij vast en zeker hier moeten blijven en zal hij mij altijd blijven dienen!’ dacht hij bij zichzelf.
