27 But David said to himself, “One day Sha’ul will sweep me away. The best thing for me to do is to escape into the territory of the P’lishtim. Then Sha’ul will give up trying to find me here or there in Isra’el’s territory, and at last I’ll be free of him.” 2 So David set out with his six hundred men and passed on to Akhish the son of Ma‘okh, king of Gat. 3 David lived with Akhish, he and his men, each man with his household — including David with his two wives Achino‘am from Yizre‘el and Avigayil from Karmel, Naval’s widow. 4 Sha’ul was told that David had escaped to Gat, whereupon he stopped searching for him.
5 David said to Akhish, “If you are now favorably disposed toward me, let me have a place to live in one of the cities in the countryside. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?” 6 That very day Akhish gave him Ziklag, and that’s why to this day Ziklag belongs to the kings of Y’hudah.
7 After David had been living in the country of the P’lishtim for a year and four months, 8 he and his men began going up and raiding the G’shuri, the Gizri and the ‘Amaleki (from ancient times these people had lived in the land in the direction of Shur, all the way to Egypt). 9 David would attack the land, leaving alive neither men nor women, but taking the sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels and clothing. Then he would return and go to Akhish. 10 Akhish would ask, “Where were you raiding today?” and David would answer, “Against the Negev of Y’hudah,” or “Against the Negev of the Yerachme’eli,” or “Against the Negev of the Keni.” 11 The reason David spared neither men nor women to be brought to Gat is that he thought, “We don’t want them telling on us, saying, ‘David did so-and-so.’” That’s how he conducted his raids for as long as he lived in the country of the P’lishtim. 12 And Akhish believed him; he said, “David has caused his own people Isra’el to despise him utterly; he will be my servant forever.”

27 But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
2 So David and the six hundred men(A) with him left and went(B) over to Achish(C) son of Maok king of Gath. 3 David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives:(D) Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal. 4 When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.
5 Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”
6 So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag,(E) and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since. 7 David lived(F) in Philistine territory a year and four months.
8 Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,(G) the Girzites and the Amalekites.(H) (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur(I) and Egypt.) 9 Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive,(J) but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.
10 When Achish asked, “Where did you go raiding today?” David would say, “Against the Negev of Judah” or “Against the Negev of Jerahmeel(K)” or “Against the Negev of the Kenites.(L)” 11 He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, “They might inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory. 12 Achish trusted David and said to himself, “He has become so obnoxious(M) to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.(N)”

27 David şi-a zis în sine: „Voi pieri într-o zi ucis de mâna lui Saul; nu este nimic mai bine pentru mine decât să fug în ţara filistenilor, pentru ca Saul să înceteze să mă mai caute în tot ţinutul lui Israel; aşa voi scăpa de mâna lui.” 2 Şi David s-a sculat, el şi cei şase sute de oameni care erau împreună cu el, şi(A) au trecut la Achiş(B), fiul lui Maoc, împăratul Gatului. 3 David şi oamenii lui au rămas în Gat, la Achiş; îşi avea fiecare familia lui şi David îşi avea cele două(C) neveste: Ahinoam din Izreel şi Abigail din Carmel, nevasta lui Nabal. 4 Saul, când a aflat că David fugise la Gat, a încetat să-l mai caute. 5 David a zis lui Achiş: „Dacă am căpătat trecere înaintea ta, rogu-te să mi se dea într-una din cetăţile ţării un loc unde să pot locui, căci pentru ce să locuiască robul tău cu tine în cetatea împărătească?” 6 Şi chiar în ziua aceea, Achiş i-a dat Ţiclagul(D). De aceea, Ţiclagul a fost al împăraţilor lui Iuda până în ziua de azi. 7 Timpul cât a locuit David în ţara filistenilor a fost de un an şi patru luni. 8 David şi oamenii lui se suiau şi năvăleau asupra gheşuriţilor(E), ghirziţilor(F) şi amaleciţilor(G), căci neamurile acestea locuiau din vremuri vechi în ţinutul acela până la Şur(H) şi până în ţara Egiptului. 9 David pustia ţinutul acesta; nu lăsa cu viaţă nici bărbat, nici femeie, le lua oile, boii, măgarii, cămilele, hainele şi apoi se întorcea şi se ducea la Achiş. 10 Achiş zicea: „Unde aţi năvălit azi?” Şi David răspundea: „Spre miazăzi de Iuda, spre miazăzi de ierahmeeliţi(I) şi spre miazăzi de(J) cheniţi.” 11 David nu lăsa cu viaţă nici bărbat, nici femeie ca să vină la Gat, „căci”, se gândea el, „ei ar putea să vorbească împotriva noastră şi să zică: ‘Aşa a făcut David’.” Şi acesta a fost felul lui de purtare în tot timpul cât a locuit în ţara filistenilor. 12 Achiş se încredea în David şi zicea: „S-a făcut urât poporului său Israel şi va rămâne în slujba mea pe vecie.”

27 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
2 And David arose, and he passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath.
3 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal's wife.
4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he sought no more again for him.
5 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?
6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.
7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months.
8 And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt.
9 And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish.
10 And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.
11 And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
12 And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever.
