David perdona la vida a Saúl en En-gadi
24 Cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos, le dieron aviso, diciendo: He aquí David está en el desierto de En-gadi. 2 Y tomando Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel, fue en busca de David y de sus hombres, por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses. 3 Y cuando llegó a un redil de ovejas en el camino, donde había una cueva, entró Saúl en ella para cubrir sus pies; y David y sus hombres estaban sentados en los rincones de la cueva.(A) 4 Entonces los hombres de David le dijeron: He aquí el día de que te dijo Jehová: He aquí que entrego a tu enemigo en tu mano, y harás con él como te pareciere. Y se levantó David, y calladamente cortó la orilla del manto de Saúl. 5 Después de esto se turbó el corazón de David, porque había cortado la orilla del manto de Saúl. 6 Y dijo a sus hombres: Jehová me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido de Jehová, que yo extienda mi mano contra él; porque es el ungido de Jehová. 7 Así reprimió David a sus hombres con palabras, y no les permitió que se levantasen contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, siguió su camino.
8 También David se levantó después, y saliendo de la cueva dio voces detrás de Saúl, diciendo: ¡Mi señor el rey! Y cuando Saúl miró hacia atrás, David inclinó su rostro a tierra, e hizo reverencia. 9 Y dijo David a Saúl: ¿Por qué oyes las palabras de los que dicen: Mira que David procura tu mal? 10 He aquí han visto hoy tus ojos cómo Jehová te ha puesto hoy en mis manos en la cueva; y me dijeron que te matase, pero te perdoné, porque dije: No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque es el ungido de Jehová. 11 Y mira, padre mío, mira la orilla de tu manto en mi mano; porque yo corté la orilla de tu manto, y no te maté. Conoce, pues, y ve que no hay mal ni traición en mi mano, ni he pecado contra ti; sin embargo, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela. 12 Juzgue Jehová entre tú y yo, y véngueme de ti Jehová; pero mi mano no será contra ti. 13 Como dice el proverbio de los antiguos: De los impíos saldrá la impiedad; así que mi mano no será contra ti. 14 ¿Tras quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga? 15 Jehová, pues, será juez, y él juzgará entre tú y yo. Él vea y sustente mi causa, y me defienda de tu mano.
16 Y aconteció que cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, Saúl dijo: ¿No es esta la voz tuya, hijo mío David? Y alzó Saúl su voz y lloró, 17 y dijo a David: Más justo eres tú que yo, que me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal. 18 Tú has mostrado hoy que has hecho conmigo bien; pues no me has dado muerte, habiéndome entregado Jehová en tu mano. 19 Porque ¿quién hallará a su enemigo, y lo dejará ir sano y salvo? Jehová te pague con bien por lo que en este día has hecho conmigo. 20 Y ahora, como yo entiendo que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel ha de ser en tu mano firme y estable, 21 júrame, pues, ahora por Jehová, que no destruirás mi descendencia después de mí, ni borrarás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre. 22 Entonces David juró a Saúl. Y se fue Saúl a su casa, y David y sus hombres subieron al lugar fuerte.

24 1 (2) Y cuando regresó Saúl de perseguir a los filisteos, le dieron la noticia de que David estaba en el desierto de En-gadi. 2 (3) Entonces Saúl escogió a tres mil hombres de todo Israel y fue a buscar a David y sus hombres por las peñas más escarpadas. 3 (4) En su camino llegó a unos rediles de ovejas, cerca de los cuales había una cueva en la que estaban escondidos David y sus hombres. Saúl se metió en ella para hacer sus necesidades, 4 (5) y los hombres de David le dijeron a éste:
—Hoy se cumple la promesa que te hizo el Señor de que pondría en tus manos a tu enemigo. Haz con él lo que mejor te parezca.
Entonces David se levantó, y con mucha precaución cortó un pedazo de la capa de Saúl; 5 (6) pero después de hacerlo le remordió la conciencia, 6 (7) y les dijo a sus hombres:
—¡El Señor me libre de alzar mi mano contra mi señor el rey! ¡Si él es rey, es porque el Señor lo ha escogido!
7 (8) De este modo refrenó David a sus hombres y no les permitió atacar a Saúl, el cual salió de la cueva y siguió su camino. 8 (9) Pero en seguida David salió de la cueva tras él, y le gritó:
—¡Majestad, Majestad!
Saúl miró hacia atrás, y David, inclinándose hasta el suelo en señal de reverencia, 9 (10) le dijo:
—¿Por qué hace caso Su Majestad a quienes le dicen que yo busco su mal? 10 (11) Su Majestad ha podido comprobar que, aunque el Señor puso hoy a Su Majestad en mis manos allá en la cueva, yo no quise matar a Su Majestad, sino que le perdoné la vida, pues me dije que si Su Majestad es rey, es porque el Señor lo ha escogido.
11 (12) «Mire bien Su Majestad lo que tengo en la mano: es un pedazo de la capa de Su Majestad, a quien bien podría haber matado. Con eso puede darse cuenta Su Majestad de que yo no he pensado en hacerle daño ni en traicionarlo, ni tampoco le he faltado. Sin embargo, Su Majestad me persigue para quitarme la vida. 12 (13) ¡Que el Señor juzgue entre nosotros dos, y me vengue de Su Majestad! Por lo que a mí toca, jamás levantaré mi mano contra Su Majestad. 13 (14) Un antiguo refrán dice: “La maldad viene de los malvados”; por eso yo jamás levantaré mi mano contra Su Majestad. 14 (15) Además, ¿tras de quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién está persiguiendo? ¡A mí, que soy como un perro muerto, o como una pulga! 15 (16) Por lo tanto, que el Señor decida y juzgue entre nosotros dos; ¡que sea él quien examine mi causa y me defienda de Su Majestad!»
16 (17) Cuando David terminó de hablar, Saúl exclamó:
—¡Pero si eres tú, David, hijo mío, quien me habla!
Y echándose a llorar, 17 (18) le dijo:
—La razón está de tu lado, pues me has devuelto bien a cambio del mal que te he causado. 18 (19) Hoy me has demostrado que tú buscas mi bien, pues habiéndome puesto el Señor en tus manos, no me mataste. 19 (20) En realidad, no hay nadie que, al encontrar a su enemigo, lo deje ir sano y salvo. Por lo tanto, ¡que el Señor te pague con bien lo que hoy has hecho conmigo! 20 (21) Ahora me doy perfecta cuenta de que tú serás el rey, y de que bajo tu dirección el reino de Israel habrá de prosperar. 21 (22) Júrame, pues, por el Señor, que no acabarás con mis descendientes ni borrarás mi nombre de mi familia.
22 (23) David se lo juró a Saúl, y después Saúl regresó a su palacio, en tanto que David y los suyos se fueron a la fortaleza.

24 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.
5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
6 And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.
7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed.
11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
12 The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
15 The Lord therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the Lord had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the Lord reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
21 Swear now therefore unto me by the Lord, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.
22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

David Spares Saul’s Life
24 [a]After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.(A)” 2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look(B) for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.
3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave(C) was there, and Saul went in to relieve(D) himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke(E) of when he said[b] to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’”(F) Then David crept up unnoticed and cut(G) off a corner of Saul’s robe.
5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken(H) for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed,(I) or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.(J) 9 He said to Saul, “Why do you listen(K) when men say, ‘David is bent on harming(L) you’? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared(M) you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut(N) off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty(O) of wrongdoing(P) or rebellion. I have not wronged(Q) you, but you are hunting(R) me down to take my life.(S) 12 May the Lord judge(T) between you and me. And may the Lord avenge(U) the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,(V)’ so my hand will not touch you.
14 “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog?(W) A flea?(X) 15 May the Lord be our judge(Y) and decide(Z) between us. May he consider my cause and uphold(AA) it; may he vindicate(AB) me by delivering(AC) me from your hand.”
16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice,(AD) David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17 “You are more righteous than I,”(AE) he said. “You have treated me well,(AF) but I have treated you badly.(AG) 18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered(AH) me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward(AI) you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king(AJ) and that the kingdom(AK) of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear(AL) to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.(AM)”
22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.(AN)
