David perdona la vida a Saúl
24 David subió de allí y se estableció en los refugios de Enguedí. 2 Cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos, le informaron que David estaba en el desierto de Enguedí. 3 Saúl tomó consigo a tres mil hombres de lo más selecto de Israel y marchó a buscar a David y a sus hombres por los Riscos de los Rebecos. 4 Cuando llegó a unos apriscos de ovejas junto al camino, entró en una cueva que había allí a hacer sus necesidades. David y sus hombres estaban al fondo de la cueva. 5 Los hombres de David le dijeron:
— Esta es la ocasión que te anunció el Señor cuando te dijo: “Voy a poner a tu enemigo en tus manos. Haz con él lo que mejor te parezca”.
David se levantó sin hacer ruido y cortó el borde del manto de Saúl. 6 Pero luego le remordió la conciencia por haberle cortado el borde del manto a Saúl. 7 Y dijo a sus hombres:
— Dios me libre de hacerle eso a mi rey, el ungido del Señor, y de atentar contra él. ¡Es el ungido del Señor!
8 David aplacó a sus hombres con estas palabras y no les permitió atacar a Saúl. Mientras tanto, Saúl salió de la cueva y siguió su camino. 9 Inmediatamente después, David salió de la cueva y se puso a gritar tras Saúl:
— ¡Señor! ¡Majestad!
Saúl miró hacia atrás y David se inclinó hacia el suelo e hizo una reverencia. 10 Luego dijo a Saúl:
— ¿Por qué haces caso a los que dicen que David busca tu ruina? 11 Ahora mismo puedes comprobar que el Señor te ha puesto hoy en mis manos dentro de la cueva: me animaron a matarte, pero te he respetado y he dicho que no atentaría contra mi rey, porque es el ungido del Señor. 12 Fíjate bien, padre mío, en lo que tengo en la mano: el borde de tu manto. Y si he cortado el borde de tu manto y no te he matado, has de reconocer que mis manos están limpias de maldad y de traición y que no te he ofendido. Tú, en cambio, me acosas para matarme. 13 Que el Señor sea nuestro juez y que salga en mi defensa ante ti; pero yo no levantaré mi mano contra ti. 14 Como dice un antiguo refrán: “De los malos sale la maldad”; pero yo no levantaré mi mano contra ti. 15 ¿Contra quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién estás persiguiendo? ¡A un perro muerto! ¡A una pulga! 16 Que el Señor dicte sentencia entre los dos: que examine, defienda mi causa y me libre de tu mano.
17 Cuando David terminó de decir estas palabras, Saúl exclamó:
— ¿Es esa tu voz, David, hijo mío?
E inmediatamente se echó a llorar. 18 Luego dijo a David:
— Tú eres más inocente que yo, pues tú me has pagado muy bien y yo muy mal. 19 Tú me acabas de demostrar ahora lo bien que te has portado conmigo, pues el Señor me ha puesto en tus manos y tú no me has matado. 20 Cuando alguien encuentra a su enemigo, no lo deja marchar por las buenas. ¡Que el Señor te recompense por esto que acabas de hacer hoy conmigo! 21 Ahora sé a ciencia cierta que serás rey y que en ti se consolidará el reino de Israel. 22 Júrame, pues, por el Señor que no aniquilarás mi descendencia ni borrarás mi apellido.
23 David se lo juró a Saúl. Luego Saúl volvió a casa y David y sus hombres subieron al refugio.

24 Cuando Saúl regresó de perseguir a los filisteos, le informaron que David estaba en el desierto de Engadi. 2 Entonces Saúl tomó consigo tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel y se fue por los Peñascos de las Cabras, en busca de David y de sus hombres.
3 Por el camino, llegó a un corral de ovejas; y como había una cueva en el lugar, entró allí para hacer sus necesidades.[a] David estaba escondido en el fondo de la cueva con sus hombres 4 y estos dijeron:
—En verdad, hoy se cumple la promesa que te hizo el Señor cuando te dijo: “Yo pondré a tu enemigo en tus manos, para que hagas con él lo que mejor te parezca”.
David se levantó sin hacer ruido y cortó el borde del manto de Saúl.
5 Pero le remordió la conciencia por lo que había hecho 6 y dijo a sus hombres:
—¡Que el Señor me libre de hacerle al rey lo que ustedes sugieren! No puedo alzar la mano contra él, porque es el ungido del Señor.
7 De este modo David contuvo a sus hombres y no les permitió que atacaran a Saúl. Pero una vez que este salió de la cueva para proseguir su camino, 8 David salió de la cueva y gritó:
—¡Majestad, señor mío!
Saúl miró hacia atrás y David, postrándose rostro en tierra, se inclinó 9 y dijo:
—¿Por qué hace caso usted a los que dicen que yo quiero hacerle daño? 10 Usted podrá ver con sus propios ojos que hoy mismo, en esta cueva, el Señor lo había entregado en mis manos. Mis hombres me incitaban a que lo matara, pero yo respeté su vida y dije: “No puedo alzar la mano contra el rey, porque es el ungido del Señor”. 11 Padre mío, mire usted el borde de su manto que tengo en la mano. Yo corté este pedazo, pero a usted no lo maté. Reconozca que yo no intento hacerle mal ni traicionarlo. Usted, sin embargo, me persigue para quitarme la vida, aunque yo no le he hecho ningún agravio. 12 ¡Que el Señor juzgue entre nosotros dos! ¡Y que el Señor me vengue de usted! Pero mi mano no se alzará contra usted. 13 Como dice el antiguo refrán: “De los malos, la maldad”; por eso mi mano jamás se alzará contra usted.
14 »¿Contra quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigue? ¡A un perro muerto! ¡A una pulga! 15 ¡Que sea el Señor quien juzgue y dicte la sentencia entre nosotros dos! ¡Que examine mi causa, y me defienda y me libre de usted!».
16 Cuando David terminó de hablar, Saúl dijo:
—David, hijo mío, ¡pero si eres tú quien me habla!
Y alzando la voz, se echó a llorar.
17 —Has actuado mejor que yo —continuó Saúl—. Me has devuelto bien por mal. 18 Hoy me has hecho reconocer lo bien que me has tratado, pues el Señor me entregó en tus manos y no me mataste. 19 ¿Quién encuentra a su enemigo y le perdona la vida?[b] ¡Que el Señor te recompense por lo bien que me has tratado hoy! 20 Ahora caigo en cuenta de que tú serás el rey y de que consolidarás el reino de Israel. 21 Júrame entonces, por el Señor, que no exterminarás mi descendencia ni borrarás el nombre de mi familia.
22 David se lo juró. Luego Saúl volvió a su palacio, mientras David y sus hombres subieron al refugio.

24 Cuando Saúl volvió de perseguir a los filisteos, le avisaron: «David está en el desierto de En-gadi.» 2 Tomó entonces Saúl tres mil hombres escogidos de todo Israel y salió en busca de David y de sus hombres por las cumbres de los peñascos de las cabras monteses. 3 Al llegar a un redil de ovejas junto al camino, donde había una cueva, entró Saúl en ella para hacer sus necesidades. En el fondo de la cueva estaban sentados David y sus hombres. 4 Los hombres de David le dijeron:
—Mira, éste es el día que Jehová te anunció: “Yo entrego a tu enemigo en tus manos, y harás con él como te parezca.”
David se levantó y, calladamente, cortó la orilla del manto de Saúl. 5 Después de esto se turbó el corazón de David, porque había cortado la orilla del manto de Saúl. 6 Y dijo a sus hombres:
—Jehová me guarde de hacer tal cosa contra mi señor, el ungido de Jehová. ¡No extenderé mi mano contra él, porque es el ungido de Jehová!
7 Con estas palabras reprimió David a sus hombres y no les permitió que se abalanzaran contra Saúl. Y Saúl, saliendo de la cueva, siguió su camino. 8 También David se levantó después y, saliendo de la cueva, le gritó a Saúl:
—¡Mi señor, el rey!
Cuando Saúl miró hacia atrás, David se postró rostro en tierra, hizo una reverencia, 9 y dijo a Saúl:
—¿Por qué escuchas las palabras de los que dicen: “Mira que David procura tu mal”? 10 Hoy han visto tus ojos cómo Jehová te ha puesto en mis manos en la cueva. Me dijeron que te matara, pero te perdoné, pues me dije: “No extenderé mi mano contra mi señor, porque es el ungido de Jehová.”
11 »Mira, padre mío, mira la orilla de tu manto en mi mano; porque yo corté la orilla de tu manto y no te maté. Reconoce, pues, que no hay mal ni traición en mis manos, ni he pecado contra ti; sin embargo, tú andas a caza de mi vida para quitármela. 12 Juzgue Jehová entre tú y yo, y véngueme de ti Jehová; pero mi mano no se alzará contra ti. 13 Como dice el proverbio de los antiguos: “De los impíos saldrá la impiedad”; así que mi mano no se alzará contra ti. 14 ¿Contra quién ha salido el rey de Israel? ¿A quién persigues? ¿A un perro muerto? ¿A una pulga? 15 Jehová, pues, será juez, y él juzgará entre tú y yo. Que él vea y sustente mi causa, y me defienda de tu mano.
16 Aconteció que cuando David acabó de decir estas palabras a Saúl, éste exclamó:
—¿No es ésta tu voz, David, hijo mío?
Alzando su voz, Saúl rompió a llorar, 17 y dijo a David:
—Más justo eres tú que yo, que me has pagado con bien, habiéndote yo pagado con mal. 18 Hoy me has mostrado tu bondad; pues Jehová me ha entregado en tus manos y no me has dado muerte. 19 Porque ¿quién encuentra a su enemigo y lo deja ir sano y salvo? Jehová te pague con bien lo que en este día has hecho conmigo. 20 Ahora tengo por cierto que tú has de reinar, y que el reino de Israel se mantendrá firme y estable en tus manos. 21 Ahora, pues, júrame por Jehová que no destruirás mi descendencia después de mí, ni borrarás mi nombre de la casa de mi padre.
22 Así lo juró David a Saúl. Después se fue Saúl a su casa, mientras David y sus hombres subían al lugar fuerte.

David Spares Saul’s Life
24 [a]After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the Desert of En Gedi.(A)” 2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look(B) for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats.
3 He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave(C) was there, and Saul went in to relieve(D) himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, “This is the day the Lord spoke(E) of when he said[b] to you, ‘I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.’”(F) Then David crept up unnoticed and cut(G) off a corner of Saul’s robe.
5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken(H) for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed,(I) or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way.
8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, “My lord the king!” When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.(J) 9 He said to Saul, “Why do you listen(K) when men say, ‘David is bent on harming(L) you’? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared(M) you; I said, ‘I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.’ 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut(N) off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty(O) of wrongdoing(P) or rebellion. I have not wronged(Q) you, but you are hunting(R) me down to take my life.(S) 12 May the Lord judge(T) between you and me. And may the Lord avenge(U) the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, ‘From evildoers come evil deeds,(V)’ so my hand will not touch you.
14 “Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog?(W) A flea?(X) 15 May the Lord be our judge(Y) and decide(Z) between us. May he consider my cause and uphold(AA) it; may he vindicate(AB) me by delivering(AC) me from your hand.”
16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, “Is that your voice,(AD) David my son?” And he wept aloud. 17 “You are more righteous than I,”(AE) he said. “You have treated me well,(AF) but I have treated you badly.(AG) 18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord delivered(AH) me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward(AI) you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king(AJ) and that the kingdom(AK) of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear(AL) to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.(AM)”
22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.(AN)

24 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.
2 Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
3 And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.
4 And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.
5 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.
6 And he said unto his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.
7 So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.
8 David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.
9 And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?
10 Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed.
11 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
12 The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
13 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.
14 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.
15 The Lord therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
16 And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.
17 And he said to David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.
18 And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the Lord had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
19 For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the Lord reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
20 And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.
21 Swear now therefore unto me by the Lord, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.
22 And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
