23 Los filisteos atacaron la ciudad de Queilá y se llevaron el trigo recién cosechado. Cuando David lo supo, 2 le preguntó a Dios:
—¿Debo ir a atacar a los filisteos?
Y Dios le contestó:
—Ve y atácalos. Salva a la ciudad de Queilá.
3 Sin embargo, los hombres que andaban con David le aconsejaron:
—No vayas. Si estando aquí en Judá, que es nuestra tierra, tenemos miedo, con mayor razón si vamos a Queilá y atacamos al ejército filisteo.
4 David volvió a preguntarle a Dios si debía ir o no, y Dios le contestó: «Ya te dije que vayas, pues yo te ayudaré a derrotar a los filisteos».
5 David fue con sus hombres a Queilá y peleó contra los filisteos. Los venció y les quitó sus rebaños. Así salvó a la gente de Queilá.
6-8 Cuando le informaron a Saúl que David estaba en Queilá, pensó: «Dios me está ayudando a atrapar a David. Se ha metido en una ciudad que se cierra con portones y candados, y no va a poder escapar».
Enseguida Saúl reunió a todo su ejército, y se puso en marcha hacia Queilá para capturar a David y a su gente. Pero Abiatar, el hijo del sacerdote Ahimélec, tenía un chaleco sacerdotal, que usaban los sacerdotes para conocer la voluntad de Dios. Lo había llevado consigo cuando huyó de Saúl y se unió a David en Queilá. 9 Cuando David supo que otra vez Saúl quería matarlo, llamó a Abiatar y le pidió llevar el chaleco. 10 Entonces David le consultó a Dios:
—Dios de Israel, sé que Saúl va a venir a Queilá, y que por mi culpa va a matar a toda la gente. 11 ¡Dime si esto es verdad!
—Es verdad —contestó Dios—. Saúl vendrá.
12 David volvió a consultar a Dios:
—Y la gente de Queilá, ¿nos traicionará?
—Así es. Los traicionará —contestó Dios.
13 Entonces David y sus seiscientos hombres se fueron de Queilá, y empezaron a huir de un lado a otro.
Cuando le informaron a Saúl que David se había ido de Queilá, ya no atacó la ciudad.
David se esconde en el desierto
14 Desde entonces David se escondía en las cuevas bien protegidas que había en el desierto de Zif. Y aunque Saúl lo buscaba todo el tiempo, Dios no dejaba que lo encontrara.
15 Una vez David estaba en Hores, en el desierto de Zif, y llegó a saber que Saúl lo andaba buscando para matarlo. 16 Pero Jonatán fue a Hores para ver a David, y lo animó a tener confianza en Dios. 17 Le dijo:
—No tengas miedo. Mi padre no va a poder encontrarte. Además, hasta él sabe que tú vas a ser rey de Israel, y que yo seré menos importante que tú.
18 Ese día renovaron su pacto de amistad delante de Dios. Después de eso, David se quedó en Hores y Jonatán regresó a su casa.
19-20 En otra ocasión, algunas personas de Zif fueron a Guibeá y le dijeron a Saúl:
—David está escondido en nuestra tierra, en las cuevas de Hores. Cuando Su Majestad quiera venir, se lo entregaremos. Está en el cerro de Haquilá, al sur del desierto.
21 —¡Que Dios los bendiga por tenerme compasión! —les dijo Saúl. 22 Vayan y fíjense bien dónde está, pues me han dicho que es muy listo. 23 Vean bien dónde se esconde, y regresen a decírmelo. Entonces yo iré con ustedes y, si David está allí, lo atraparé, ¡aunque tenga que buscarlo entre todas las familias de Judá!
24-25 Aquellas personas regresaron a Zif, y Saúl y sus hombres se fueron tras ellas para buscar a David.
David y su gente estaban al sur del desierto de Maón. Cuando David supo que Saúl lo buscaba, bajó a la roca que estaba en el desierto de Maón.
Saúl supo dónde estaba David, y fue a perseguirlo. 26 Por un lado del cerro iba Saúl, y por el otro iba David. Cuando Saúl y su ejército estaban a punto de alcanzar a David y a su gente, 27 llegó un mensajero y le dijo a Saúl: «¡Regrese usted de inmediato, porque los filisteos nos están atacando!»
28 Saúl tuvo entonces que dejar de perseguir a David, y se fue a pelear contra los filisteos. Por eso a aquella roca se le conoce como «la roca del escape».
29 Después de eso, David se fue a vivir por un tiempo a las cuevas protegidas de En-gadi.

23 Los filisteos atacaron la ciudad de Queilá y saquearon los graneros. Cuando David se enteró de lo sucedido, 2 consultó al Señor:
—¿Debo ir a luchar contra los filisteos?
—Ve —respondió el Señor—, lucha contra los filisteos y libera a Queilá.
3 Pero los soldados dijeron a David:
—Si aun aquí en Judá vivimos con miedo, ¡cuánto más si vamos a Queilá para atacar al ejército filisteo!
4 David volvió a consultar al Señor y él respondió:
—Ponte en camino y ve a Queilá, que voy a entregar en tus manos a los filisteos.
5 Así que David y sus hombres fueron allá y lucharon contra los filisteos, derrotándolos por completo. David se apoderó de los ganados de los filisteos y rescató a los habitantes de la ciudad. 6 Ahora bien, cuando Abiatar, hijo de Ajimélec, huyó a Queilá para refugiarse con David, se llevó consigo el efod.
Saúl persigue a David
7 Cuando contaron a Saúl que David había ido a Queilá, exclamó: «¡Dios me lo ha entregado! David se ha metido en una ciudad con puertas y cerrojos; no tiene escapatoria». 8 Entonces convocó a todo su ejército para ir a combatir a David y a sus hombres, y sitiar la ciudad de Queilá.
9 David se enteró de que Saúl tramaba su destrucción. Por tanto, ordenó al sacerdote Abiatar que llevara el efod. 10 Luego David oró:
—Oh Señor, Dios de Israel, yo, tu siervo, sé muy bien que por mi culpa Saúl se propone venir a Queilá para destruirla. 11 ¿Me entregarán los habitantes de esta ciudad en manos de Saúl? ¿Es verdad que Saúl vendrá, según me han dicho? Yo te ruego, Señor, Dios de Israel, que me lo hagas saber.
—Sí, vendrá —respondió el Señor.
12 David volvió a preguntarle:
—¿Nos entregarán los habitantes de Queilá a mí y a mis hombres en manos de Saúl?
Y el Señor contestó:
—Sí, los entregarán.
13 Entonces David y sus hombres, que eran como seiscientos, se fueron de Queilá y anduvieron de un lugar a otro. Cuando le contaron a Saúl que David se había ido de Queilá, decidió suspender la campaña.
14 David se estableció en los refugios del desierto, en los áridos cerros de Zif. Día tras día Saúl lo buscaba, pero Dios no lo entregó en sus manos.
15 Estando David en Hores, en el desierto de Zif, se enteró de que Saúl había salido en su búsqueda con la intención de matarlo. 16 Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, fue a ver a David en Hores y lo animó a seguir confiando en Dios. 17 «No tengas miedo —dijo—, que mi padre no podrá atraparte. Tú vas a ser el rey de Israel y yo seré el segundo al mando. Esto, hasta mi padre lo sabe». 18 Entonces los dos hicieron un pacto en presencia del Señor, después de lo cual Jonatán regresó a su casa y David se quedó en Hores.
19 Los habitantes de Zif fueron a Guibeá y dijeron a Saúl:
—¿No sabe usted que David se ha escondido en nuestro territorio? Está en el monte de Jaquilá, en los refugios de Hores, al sur del desierto. 20 Cuando Su Majestad tenga a bien venir, entregaremos a David en sus manos.
21 —¡Que el Señor los bendiga por tenerme tanta consideración! —respondió Saúl—. 22 Vayan y averigüen bien por dónde anda y quién lo ha visto, pues me han dicho que es muy astuto. 23 Infórmense bien de todos los lugares donde se esconde y tráiganme datos precisos. Entonces yo iré con ustedes y, si es verdad que está en esa región, lo buscaré entre todos los clanes de Judá.
24 Los de Zif se despidieron de Saúl y volvieron a su tierra. Mientras tanto, David y sus hombres se encontraban en el desierto de Maón, en el Arabá, al sur del desierto. 25 Cuando avisaron a David que Saúl y sus hombres venían en su búsqueda, bajó al peñasco del desierto de Maón. Al enterarse de esto, Saúl dirigió la persecución hacia ese lugar.
26 Saúl avanzaba por un costado del monte, mientras que David y sus hombres iban por el otro, apresurándose para escapar. Pero Saúl y sus hombres lo tenían rodeado. Ya estaban a punto de atraparlo, 27 cuando un mensajero llegó y dijo a Saúl: «¡Venga de prisa, que los filisteos están saqueando el país!». 28 Saúl dejó entonces de perseguir a David y volvió para enfrentarse con los filisteos. Por eso aquel sitio se llama Sela Hamajlecot.[a] 29 Luego David se fue de allí para establecerse en los refugios de Engadi.

23 And they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshing-floors.
2 And David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And Jehovah said to David, Go and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah.
3 But David's men said to him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?
4 And David inquired of Jehovah yet again. And Jehovah answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah; for I will give the Philistines into thy hand.
5 And David and his men went to Keilah, and fought against the Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, he came down with an ephod in his hand.
7 And it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. Then Saul said, God has cast him off into my hand; for he is shut in, by entering into a city that has gates and bars.
8 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9 And when David knew that Saul devised mischief against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring the ephod.
10 Then said David, Jehovah, God of Israel, thy servant hath heard for certain that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
11 Will the citizens of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? Jehovah, God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy servant. And Jehovah said, He will come down.
12 And David said, Will the citizens of Keilah deliver up me and my men into the hand of Saul? And Jehovah said, They will deliver [thee] up.
13 Then David and his men, about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go. And it was told Saul that David had escaped from Keilah, and he forbore to go forth.
14 And David abode in the wilderness in strongholds, and abode in the mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
15 And David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life; and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
16 And Jonathan Saul's son arose, and went to David into the wood, and strengthened his hand in God.
17 And he said to him, Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father will not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next to thee; and that also Saul my father knows.
18 And they two made a covenant before Jehovah; and David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house.
19 And the Ziphites came up to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in strongholds in the wood, on the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of the waste?
20 And now, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and it will be for us to deliver him up into the king's hand.
21 And Saul said, Blessed be ye of Jehovah; for ye have compassion upon me.
22 Go, I pray you, make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his track is, who has seen him there; for it is told me that he deals very subtilly.
23 And see, and ascertain all the lurking-places where he hides himself, and come ye again to me with sure information, that I may go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout the thousands of Judah.
24 And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon, in the plain on the south of the waste.
25 And Saul and his men went to seek [him]. And they told David; and he came down from the rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And Saul heard [that], and he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away from Saul; and Saul and his men sought to surround David and his men to take them.
27 But there came a messenger to Saul, saying, Haste thee and come; for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.
28 And Saul returned from pursuing after David, and went against the Philistines; therefore they called that place Sela-hammahlekoth.
29 And David went up from thence, and abode in the strongholds of Engedi.
