23 ¶ Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors.
2 Therefore David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go and smite these Philistines? And the LORD said unto David, Go and smite the Philistines and save Keilah.
3 But David’s men said unto him, Behold, we are afraid here in Judah, how much more than if we go to Keilah against the army of the Philistines?
4 Then David enquired of the LORD yet again. And the LORD answered him and said, Arise, go down to Keilah, for I will deliver the Philistines into thy hand.
5 So David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and smote them with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 And it came to pass when Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, fled to David to Keilah that the ephod came in his hand.
7 ¶ And it was told Saul how David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, God has delivered him into my hand, for he is shut in by entering into a town that has gates and bars.
8 And Saul called all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men.
9 But David understood that Saul devised evil against him, and he said to Abiathar, the priest, Bring here the ephod.
10 Then David said, O LORD God of Israel, thy slave has certainly heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
11 Will the men of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down as thy slave has heard? O LORD God of Israel, I beseech thee, tell thy slave. And the LORD said, He will come down.
12 Then David said, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD said, They will deliver thee up.
13 So David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed out of Keilah and went from one place to another. And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah, and he forbare to go forth.
14 ¶ And David abode in the wilderness in strong holds and remained in a mountain in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not deliver him into his hand.
15 And David, seeing that Saul had come out to seek his soul, stayed in the woods in the wilderness of Ziph.
16 Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God.
17 And he said unto him, Do not fear, for the hand of Saul, my father, shall not find thee, and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and even my father knows this.
18 And the two made a covenant before the LORD, and David abode in the woods, and Jonathan returned to his house.
19 ¶ Then those of Ziph came to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in strong holds in the woods in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the right hand side of the wilderness?
20 Now, therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of thy soul to come down, and our part shall be to deliver him into the king’s hand.
21 And Saul said, Blessed are ye of the LORD, for ye have compassion on me.
22 Go, I pray you, prepare yet and know and see his place where he places his foot and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he deals with great prudence.
23 See, therefore, and take knowledge of all the hiding places where he hides himself and come again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you; and it shall come to pass, if he is in the land that I will search him out with all the thousands of Judah.
24 And they arose and went to Ziph before Saul, but David and his men were in the wilderness of Maon in the plain on the right hand side of the wilderness.
25 Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David, and he came down from there into a rock and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
26 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain; and David made haste to get away from the presence of Saul, for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
27 But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Make haste and come, for the Philistines have invaded the land.
28 Saul returned, therefore, from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. For this reason they called that place Selahammahlekoth. {Heb. the rock of divisions}
29 And David went up from there and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.

David Saves the City of Keilah
23 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against (A)Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.” 2 Therefore David (B)inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the Lord said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah.” 3 But David's men said to him, “Behold, we are afraid here in Judah; how much more then if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” 4 Then David (C)inquired of the Lord again. And the Lord answered him, “Arise, go down to Keilah, (D)for I will give the Philistines into your hand.” 5 And David and his men went to Keilah and fought with the Philistines and brought away their livestock and struck them with a great blow. So David saved the inhabitants of Keilah.
6 (E)When Abiathar the son of Ahimelech had fled to David to Keilah, he had come down with an ephod in his hand. 7 Now it was told Saul that David had come to Keilah. And Saul said, “God has given him into my hand, for he has shut himself in by entering a town that has gates and bars.” 8 And Saul summoned all the people to war, to go down to Keilah, to besiege David and his men. 9 David knew that Saul was plotting harm against him. And he said to Abiathar the priest, (F)“Bring the ephod here.” 10 Then David said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, your servant has surely heard that Saul seeks to come to Keilah, to destroy the city on my account. 11 Will the men of Keilah surrender me into his hand? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? O Lord, the God of Israel, please tell your servant.” And the Lord said, “He will come down.” 12 Then David said, “Will the men of Keilah surrender me and my men into the hand of Saul?” And the Lord said, (G)“They will surrender you.” 13 Then David and his men, (H)who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went (I)wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. 14 And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country (J)of the wilderness of (K)Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.
Saul Pursues David
15 David saw that Saul had come out to seek his life. David was in the wilderness of Ziph at Horesh. 16 And Jonathan, Saul's son, rose and went to David at Horesh, and strengthened his hand in God. 17 And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. (L)Saul my father also knows this.” 18 (M)And the two of them made a covenant before the Lord. David remained at Horesh, and Jonathan went home.
19 (N)Then the Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah, saying, “Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hachilah, which is south of (O)Jeshimon? 20 Now come down, O king, according to all your heart's desire to come down, (P)and our part shall be to surrender him into the king's hand.” 21 And Saul said, (Q)“May you be blessed by the Lord, (R)for you have had compassion on me. 22 Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning. 23 See therefore and take note of all the lurking places where he hides, and come back to me with sure information. Then I will go with you. And if he is in the land, I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.” 24 And they arose and went to Ziph ahead of Saul.
Now David and his men were (S)in the wilderness of Maon, (T)in the Arabah to the south of (U)Jeshimon. 25 And Saul and his men went to seek him. And David was told, so he went down to the rock and lived in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 26 Saul went on one side of the mountain, and David and his men on the other side of the mountain. And David was hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them, 27 a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Hurry and come, for the Philistines have made a raid against the land.” 28 So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.[a] 29 [b] And David went up from there and lived in the strongholds of (V)Engedi.

23 Có người đến báo với Ða-vít, “Quân Phi-li-tin đang tấn công Thành Kê-i-la. Kìa, chúng đang cướp trong các sân đập lúa.” 2 Ða-vít bèn cầu hỏi ý Chúa, “Con có nên đi đánh quân Phi-li-tin và giải cứu Thành Kê-i-la không?”
Chúa trả lời Ða-vít, “Hãy đi, tấn công quân Phi-li-tin, và giải cứu Kê-i-la.”
3 Những người theo Ða-vít nói với ông, “Nầy, chúng ta đang ở đây, trong đất Giu-đa, mà còn khiếp sợ, huống chi là đi đến Kê-i-la để đánh nhau với quân của dân Phi-li-tin; bộ ông không sợ chết sao?”
4 Ða-vít lại cầu hỏi ý Chúa một lần nữa và Chúa đáp lời ông “Hãy trỗi dậy, đi xuống Kê-i-la, vì Ta sẽ ban quân Phi-li-tin vào tay ngươi.” 5 Ða-vít và những người theo ông đi đến Kê-i-la, tấn công quân Phi-li-tin, đánh chúng thảm bại nặng nề, và cướp đoạt các súc vật của chúng. Vậy Ða-vít cứu được dân Thành Kê-i-la.
6 Số là khi A-bi-a-tha con trai A-hi-mê-léc chạy trốn đến với Ða-vít ở Kê-i-la, ông đi xuống và mang theo một ê-phót.
7 Sau-lơ được báo rằng Ða-vít đang ở tại Kê-i-la, nên Sau-lơ nói, “Ðức Chúa Trời đã trao nó vào tay ta rồi, vì nó đã tự nhốt mình vào một thành có cửa đóng then cài.” 8 Vậy Sau-lơ triệu tập toàn quân để ra trận, hầu đi xuống Kê-i-la, bao vây Ða-vít và những người theo ông ấy. 9 Khi Ða-vít biết Sau-lơ toan mưu hại ông, ông nói với Tư Tế A-bi-a-tha, “Xin thầy đem ê-phót đến đây.” 10 Ða-vít nói, “Lạy Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của I-sơ-ra-ên, tôi tớ Ngài có nghe rằng Sau-lơ đang tìm đến đây để tiêu diệt thành nầy vì cớ con. 11 Dân trong Thành Kê-i-la sẽ nộp con cho ông ấy chăng? Sau-lơ sẽ xuống đây như tin con đã nghe chăng? Lạy Chúa, Ðức Chúa Trời của I-sơ-ra-ên, cầu xin Ngài cho tôi tớ Ngài được biết.”
Chúa phán, “Nó sẽ xuống.”
12 Ða-vít nói, “Dân Thành Kê-i-la sẽ nộp con, và những người theo con vào tay Sau-lơ chăng?”
Chúa phán, “Chúng sẽ nộp.”
13 Vậy Ða-vít và những người của ông, khoảng sáu trăm người, đứng dậy, rời khỏi Kê-i-la và đi phiêu bạt khắp nơi. Khi Sau-lơ được báo Ða-vít đã trốn khỏi Kê-i-la rồi, ông không xuất quân ra trận nữa.
Ða-vít Trốn trong Ðồng Hoang
14 Ða-vít vào trong vùng đồng hoang và trú ẩn trong các địa thế hiểm trở. Ông ở trong miền rừng núi hoang vu của xứ Xíp. Sau-lơ cứ cho người lùng bắt ông mỗi ngày, nhưng Chúa không trao ông vào tay Sau-lơ. 15 Ða-vít thấy Sau-lơ cứ dẫn quân đi tìm giết ông. Lúc ấy ông đang trú ẩn trong một cánh rừng của miền đồng hoang xứ Xíp. 16 Giô-na-than con trai Sau-lơ đứng dậy, đi đến gặp Ða-vít trong rừng và khuyên ông cứ vững lòng tin cậy Ðức Chúa Trời. 17 Ông nói, “Ðừng sợ, vì tay của Vua Sau-lơ cha anh sẽ không tìm ra em đâu. Em sẽ làm vua trên I-sơ-ra-ên và anh sẽ làm phó cho em. Ngay cả cha anh là Vua Sau-lơ cũng biết điều đó.” 18 Hai người kết ước với nhau trước mặt Chúa. Ða-vít ở lại trong rừng, còn Giô-na-than trở về nhà mình.
19 Bấy giờ có mấy người ở Xíp đến Ghi-bê-a tâu với Sau-lơ rằng, “Ða-vít há chẳng đang trốn giữa chúng tôi ở những nơi hiểm trở trong rừng, trong miền đồi núi của Ha-ki-la, về phía nam của Giê-si-môn sao? 20 Vậy bây giờ, tâu vua, xin cứ theo lòng ước muốn của vua mà xuống đó, phần chúng tôi, chúng tôi sẽ trao nó vào tay vua.”
21 Sau-lơ nói, “Cầu xin Chúa ban phước cho các ngươi, vì các ngươi đã thương xót ta. 22 Hãy đi và tìm biết cho chính xác nơi nào nó ẩn trốn, có ai thấy nó ở đó không, vì ta nghe nói nó tinh khôn lắm. 23 Vậy hãy đi tìm để biết chắc chắn tất cả các nơi nó ẩn núp, rồi trở lại đây với tin tức chính xác, sau đó ta sẽ đi với các ngươi. Và nếu nó còn ở trong xứ, ta sẽ truy lùng nó, dù phải tra xét tất cả các tộc họ của Giu-đa.”
24 Vậy chúng đứng dậy và đi đến Xíp trước Sau-lơ. Nhưng Ða-vít và những người theo ông đang ở trong đồng hoang Ma-ôn, trong vùng đồng bằng phía nam Giê-si-môn. 25 Khi Sau-lơ và quân lính của ông đi lùng kiếm Ða-vít, người ta liền báo cho Ða-vít hay. Vì thế ông đến núi đá và ẩn trốn trong vùng đồng hoang Ma-ôn. Khi Sau-lơ nghe thế, ông dẫn quân đến truy lùng Ða-vít trong đồng hoang Ma-ôn. 26 Sau-lơ ở bên nầy ngọn núi, còn Ða-vít và những người theo ông ở bên kia ngọn núi. Ða-vít vội vàng chạy trốn khỏi Sau-lơ, vì Sau-lơ và quân lính của ông ta đang bao vây để bắt ông. 27 Ngay lúc ấy có một sứ giả đến báo với Vua Sau-lơ, “Xin ngài mau về gấp, vì quân Phi-li-tin đang tiến vào xứ sở chúng ta.”
28 Sau-lơ liền ngưng cuộc truy lùng Ða-vít và rút về để đối phó với quân Phi-li-tin. Vậy người ta gọi nơi đó là Núi Ðá Thoát Nạn.[a] 29 Ða-vít rời nơi đó và đến trú đóng tại các nơi hiểm trở ở vùng Ên Ghê-đi.
