David at the Cave of Adullam
22 David departed from there and escaped to (A)the cave of (B)Adullam. And when his brothers and all his father's house heard it, they went down there to him. 2 (C)And everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was bitter in soul,[a] gathered to him. And he became commander over them. And there were with him (D)about four hundred men.
3 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab. And he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother stay[b] with you, till I know what God will do for me.” 4 And he left them with the king of Moab, and they stayed with him all the time that David was in the stronghold. 5 Then the prophet (E)Gad said to David, “Do not remain in the stronghold; depart, and go into the land of Judah.” So David departed and went into the forest of Hereth.
Saul Kills the Priests at Nob
6 Now Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Saul was sitting at Gibeah under (F)the tamarisk tree on the height with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. 7 And Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, people of Benjamin; will the son of Jesse (G)give every one of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds, 8 that all of you have conspired against me? No one discloses to me (H)when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you (I)is sorry for me or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, (J)to lie in wait, as at this day.” 9 Then answered (K)Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, “I saw the son of Jesse (L)coming to Nob, to (M)Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, 10 (N)and he inquired of the Lord for him and (O)gave him provisions and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent to summon Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests who were at Nob, and all of them came to the king. 12 And Saul said, “Hear now, son of Ahitub.” And he answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13 And Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread and a sword and (P)have inquired of God for him, so that he has risen against me, (Q)to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, “And who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and captain over[c] your bodyguard, and honored in your house? 15 Is today the first time (R)that I have inquired of God for him? No! Let not the king impute anything to his servant or to all the house of my father, for your servant has known nothing of all this, (S)much or little.” 16 And the king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you and all your father's house.” 17 And the king said to (T)the guard who stood about him, “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because their hand also is with David, and they knew that he fled and did not disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king would not put out their hand to strike the priests of the Lord. 18 Then the king said to Doeg, “You turn and strike the priests.” And Doeg the Edomite turned and struck down the priests, (U)and he killed on that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. 19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he put to the sword; (V)both man and woman, child and infant, ox, donkey and sheep, he put to the sword.
20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named (W)Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 21 And Abiathar told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 And David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, (X)when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I have occasioned the death of all the persons of your father's house. 23 (Y)Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks my life seeks your life. With me you shall be in safekeeping.”

22 Yéndose luego David de allí, huyó a la cueva de Adulam;(A) y cuando sus hermanos y toda la casa de su padre lo supieron, vinieron allí a él. 2 Y se juntaron con él todos los afligidos, y todo el que estaba endeudado, y todos los que se hallaban en amargura de espíritu, y fue hecho jefe de ellos; y tuvo consigo como cuatrocientos hombres.
3 Y se fue David de allí a Mizpa de Moab, y dijo al rey de Moab: Yo te ruego que mi padre y mi madre estén con vosotros, hasta que sepa lo que Dios hará de mí. 4 Los trajo, pues, a la presencia del rey de Moab, y habitaron con él todo el tiempo que David estuvo en el lugar fuerte. 5 Pero el profeta Gad dijo a David: No te estés en este lugar fuerte; anda y vete a tierra de Judá. Y David se fue, y vino al bosque de Haret.
Saúl mata a los sacerdotes de Nob
6 Oyó Saúl que se sabía de David y de los que estaban con él. Y Saúl estaba sentado en Gabaa, debajo de un tamarisco sobre un alto; y tenía su lanza en su mano, y todos sus siervos estaban alrededor de él. 7 Y dijo Saúl a sus siervos que estaban alrededor de él: Oíd ahora, hijos de Benjamín: ¿Os dará también a todos vosotros el hijo de Isaí tierras y viñas, y os hará a todos vosotros jefes de millares y jefes de centenas, 8 para que todos vosotros hayáis conspirado contra mí, y no haya quien me descubra al oído cómo mi hijo ha hecho alianza con el hijo de Isaí, ni alguno de vosotros que se duela de mí y me descubra cómo mi hijo ha levantado a mi siervo contra mí para que me aceche, tal como lo hace hoy? 9 Entonces Doeg edomita, que era el principal de los siervos de Saúl, respondió y dijo: Yo vi al hijo de Isaí que vino a Nob, a Ahimelec hijo de Ahitob, 10 el cual consultó por él a Jehová y le dio provisiones, y también le dio la espada de Goliat el filisteo.(B)

Y él dijo: Heme aquí, señor mío. 13 Y le dijo Saúl: ¿Por qué habéis conspirado contra mí, tú y el hijo de Isaí, cuando le diste pan y espada, y consultaste por él a Dios, para que se levantase contra mí y me acechase, como lo hace hoy día? 14 Entonces Ahimelec respondió al rey, y dijo: ¿Y quién entre todos tus siervos es tan fiel como David, yerno también del rey, que sirve a tus órdenes y es ilustre en tu casa? 15 ¿He comenzado yo desde hoy a consultar por él a Dios? Lejos sea de mí; no culpe el rey de cosa alguna a su siervo, ni a toda la casa de mi padre; porque tu siervo ninguna cosa sabe de este asunto, grande ni pequeña. 16 Y el rey dijo: Sin duda morirás, Ahimelec, tú y toda la casa de tu padre. 17 Entonces dijo el rey a la gente de su guardia que estaba alrededor de él: Volveos y matad a los sacerdotes de Jehová; porque también la mano de ellos está con David, pues sabiendo ellos que huía, no me lo descubrieron. Pero los siervos del rey no quisieron extender sus manos para matar a los sacerdotes de Jehová. 18 Entonces dijo el rey a Doeg: Vuelve tú, y arremete contra los sacerdotes. 20 Pero uno de los hijos de Ahimelec hijo de Ahitob, que se llamaba Abiatar, escapó, y huyó tras David. 21 Y Abiatar dio aviso a David de cómo Saúl había dado muerte a los sacerdotes de Jehová. 22 Y dijo David a Abiatar: Yo sabía que estando allí aquel día Doeg el edomita, él lo había de hacer saber a Saúl. 22 David left Gath and escaped to Adullam’s fortress.[a] When David’s siblings and all his extended family learned of this, they went to join him there. 2 Everyone who was in trouble, in debt, or in desperate circumstances gathered around David, and he became their leader. Approximately four hundred men joined him.
3 From there David went to Mizpeh in Moab. He said to the Moabite king, “Please let my father and mother stay with you until I know what God will do to me.” 4 So David left his parents with the Moabite king, and they stayed with him the whole time David was in the fortress.
5 Then the prophet Gad told David, “Don’t stay in the fortress any longer. Leave now and go to the land of Judah.” So David left and went to Hereth forest.
Saul kills the priests of Nob
6 Saul learned that David and his soldiers had been located. Saul was sitting under the tamarisk tree on the hill at Gibeah, spear in hand, with all his servants waiting on him. 7 He said to them, “Listen up, Benjaminites! Will Jesse’s son give fields and vineyards to each and every one of you? Will he make each one of you commanders of units of one thousand men or commanders of units of one hundred? 8 Is that why all of you have conspired against me? No one informed me when my son made a covenant with Jesse’s son! Not one of you is concerned about me or informs me when my own son sets my servant against me in an ambush—but that’s what has happened today!”
9 Doeg the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s servants, responded, “I saw Jesse’s son go to Ahimelech, Ahitub’s son, at Nob. 10 Ahimelech questioned the Lord for David, and gave him provisions as well as the sword of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 The king then sent for the priest Ahimelech, Ahitub’s son, and all his extended family, who were the priests at Nob. All of them came to the king.
12 “Listen here, son of Ahitub,” Saul said.
“Yes sir,” he replied.
13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me—you with Jesse’s son—giving him food and a sword and questioning God for him so that he is now against me, waiting in ambush, which is what has happened today?”
14 Ahimelech answered the king, “Out of all your servants, who is as trustworthy as David? He is the king’s son-in-law, does whatever you ask, and is well respected in your house. 15 Was that the first time I questioned God for him? Of course not! But please, the king shouldn’t accuse me, his servant, or anyone in my father’s household of any wrongdoing, because your servant knew nothing whatsoever about this matter.”
16 But the king said, “You will be executed, Ahimelech—you and all of your father’s household!”
17 The king ordered the guards waiting on him: “Go ahead and kill the Lord’s priests because they’ve joined up with David too. They knew he was on the run but didn’t inform me.”
But the king’s servants were unwilling to lift a hand to attack the Lord’s priests.
18 The king then ordered Doeg, “Doeg! You go attack the priests.” So Doeg the Edomite went and attacked the priests, killing eighty-five men who wore the linen priestly vest[b] that day. 19 He put the whole priestly city of Nob to the sword: men and women, children and infants, even oxen, donkeys, and sheep.
20 But one of the sons of Ahimelech, Ahitub’s son, escaped. His name was Abiathar, and he fled to David. 21 Abiathar reported to David that Saul had slaughtered the Lord’s priests.
22 David told Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, I knew that he would tell Saul everything. I am to blame[c] for the deaths in your father’s family. 23 Stay with me, and don’t be afraid. The one who seeks my life now seeks yours too. But you’ll be safe with me.”

3 From there David went to Mizpah in Moab and said to the king of Moab, “Would you let my father and mother come and stay with you until I learn what God will do for me?” 4 So he left them with the king of Moab,(D) and they stayed with him as long as David was in the stronghold.

9 But Doeg(N) the Edomite, who was standing with Saul’s officials, said, “I saw the son of Jesse come to Ahimelek son of Ahitub(O) at Nob.(P) 10 Ahimelek inquired(Q) of the Lord for him; he also gave him provisions(R) and the sword(S) of Goliath the Philistine.”
11 Then the king sent for the priest Ahimelek son of Ahitub and all the men of his family, who were the priests at Nob, and they all came to the king. 12 Saul said, “Listen now, son of Ahitub.”
“Yes, my lord,” he answered.
13 Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired(T) against me, you and the son of Jesse, giving him bread and a sword and inquiring of God for him, so that he has rebelled against me and lies in wait for me, as he does today?”
14 Ahimelek answered the king, “Who(U) of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household? 15 Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.”
16 But the king said, “You will surely die, Ahimelek, you and your whole family.(V)”
17 Then the king ordered the guards at his side: “Turn and kill the priests of the Lord, because they too have sided with David. They knew he was fleeing, yet they did not tell me.”
But the king’s officials were unwilling(W) to raise a hand to strike the priests of the Lord.
18 The king then ordered Doeg, “You turn and strike down the priests.”(X) So Doeg the Edomite turned and struck them down. That day he killed eighty-five men who wore the linen ephod.(Y) 19 He also put to the sword(Z) Nob,(AA) the town of the priests, with its men and women, its children and infants, and its cattle, donkeys and sheep.
20 But one son of Ahimelek son of Ahitub,(AB) named Abiathar,(AC) escaped and fled to join David.(AD) 21 He told David that Saul had killed the priests of the Lord. 22 Then David said to Abiathar, “That day, when Doeg(AE) the Edomite was there, I knew he would be sure to tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of your whole family. 23 Stay with me; don’t be afraid. The man who wants to kill you(AF) is trying to kill me too. You will be safe with me.”

8 That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
9 Then answered Doeg the Edomite, which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.
10 And he enquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.
11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father's house, the priests that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king.
12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
14 Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honourable in thine house?
15 Did I then begin to enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more.
16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house.
17 And the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord: because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of the Lord.
18 And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.
20 And one of the sons of Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David.
21 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain the Lord's priests.
22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death of all the persons of thy father's house.
23 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard.
