David at Nob
21 [a]David went to Nob,(A) to Ahimelek the priest. Ahimelek trembled(B) when he met him, and asked, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”
2 David answered Ahimelek the priest, “The king sent me on a mission and said to me, ‘No one is to know anything about the mission I am sending you on.’ As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. 3 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever you can find.”
4 But the priest answered David, “I don’t have any ordinary bread(C) on hand; however, there is some consecrated(D) bread here—provided the men have kept(E) themselves from women.”
5 David replied, “Indeed women have been kept from us, as usual(F) whenever[b] I set out. The men’s bodies are holy(G) even on missions that are not holy. How much more so today!” 6 So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,(H) since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away.
7 Now one of Saul’s servants was there that day, detained before the Lord; he was Doeg(I) the Edomite,(J) Saul’s chief shepherd.
8 David asked Ahimelek, “Don’t you have a spear or a sword here? I haven’t brought my sword or any other weapon, because the king’s mission was urgent.”
9 The priest replied, “The sword(K) of Goliath(L) the Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah,(M) is here; it is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you want it, take it; there is no sword here but that one.”
David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”

10 That day David fled from Saul and went(N) to Achish king of Gath. 11 But the servants of Achish said to him, “Isn’t this David, the king of the land? Isn’t he the one they sing about in their dances:
“‘Saul has slain his thousands,
and David his tens of thousands’?”(O)
12 David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish king of Gath. 13 So he pretended to be insane(P) in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.
14 Achish said to his servants, “Look at the man! He is insane! Why bring him to me? 15 Am I so short of madmen that you have to bring this fellow here to carry on like this in front of me? Must this man come into my house?”

21 David ging naar de priester Achimelech in Nob. Achimelech kwam David geschrokken tegemoet en vroeg hem: "Waarom ben je alleen en is er niemand bij je?" 2 David antwoordde: "De koning heeft mij een geheime opdracht gegeven. Niemand mag er iets van weten. De soldaten heb ik ergens anders heen gestuurd. 3 Heb je iets te eten voor me? Ik wil graag vijf broden, of iets anders als je geen brood hebt." 4 De priester zei tegen David: "Ik heb geen gewone broden op dit moment. Ik heb alleen de heilige broden.[a] De soldaten mogen die alleen eten als ze niet met vrouwen naar bed zijn geweest." 5 David antwoordde de priester: "Sinds we vertrokken zijn eergisteren, zijn de mannen niet met vrouwen naar bed geweest. En de tassen van de mannen zijn schoon. Het heilige brood wordt wel als gewoon brood gegeten, maar we zullen het apart houden in de schone tassen."[b] 6 Toen gaf de priester hem de heilige broden, omdat dat het enige brood was dat hij had. Ze waren net weggehaald van de tafel bij de Heer, omdat ze vervangen waren door verse broden.
7 Op dat moment was daar een dienaar van Saul bij de Heer in het heiligdom. Hij heette Doëg. Hij kwam uit Edom en was de opzichter over Sauls herders.
8 David vroeg Achimelech: "Heb je hier een zwaard of speer voor me? Want ik heb mijn zwaard en mijn andere wapens niet kunnen meenemen, omdat de opdracht van de koning dringend was." 9 Toen zei de priester: "Het zwaard van de Filistijn Goliat, die jij verslagen hebt in het Eikendal, ligt hier. Het ligt achter de borsttas van de priester, in een doek gewikkeld. Neem dat maar mee als je dat wil. Een ander zwaard is er niet. Alleen dit." David zei: "Er is geen beter zwaard dan het zwaard van Goliat! Geef het me."

10 David vertrok onmiddellijk weer en vluchtte diezelfde dag voor Saul. Hij ging naar koning Achis van Gat. 11 De dienaren van Achis zeiden tegen Achis: "Dat is toch koning David? Over hem hebben de dansende vrouwen toch gezongen: 'Saul heeft duizenden verslagen, maar David tienduizenden?' " 12 David hoorde dat en werd bang voor Achis. 13 Daarom deed hij alsof hij gek was. Hij vertrok zijn gezicht, krabde aan de poortdeuren en kwijlde in zijn baard. 14 Toen zei Achis tegen zijn dienaren: "Zien jullie dan niet dat die kerel gek is? 15 Waarom brengen jullie hem bij mij? Zijn er hier soms geen gekken genoeg, dat jullie deze gek bij me brengen om bij mij uit te razen? Moet zo iemand in mijn huis komen?"

- 1 Samuël 21:5 De vertaling van het vers is niet zeker. De Statenvertaling heeft hier: 'Net zoals altijd mogen de mannen niet met vrouwen naar bed als ze met mij mee zijn. Dat hebben ze dan ook niet gedaan, dus ze zijn rein. Zelfs als het gewoon brood was, dan zou het heilig worden doordat deze mannen ervan eten.'

21 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
2 And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
3 Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
4 And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
5 And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
6 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
8 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste.
9 And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
10 And David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
11 And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
12 And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.
13 And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.
14 Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
15 Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
