Jonatán ayuda a David

20 Entonces David huyó de Naiot en Ramá, vino ante Jonatán, y dijo(A): ¿Qué he hecho yo? ¿Cuál es mi maldad y cuál es mi pecado contra[a] tu padre para que busque mi vida? 2 Y él le respondió: De ninguna manera; no morirás. He aquí, mi padre no hace ninguna cosa, grande o pequeña, sin revelármela[b]. ¿Por qué, pues, me ha de ocultar esto mi padre? No será así. 3 Pero David volvió a jurar(B), diciendo[c]: Tu padre sabe bien que he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, y ha dicho: «Que no lo sepa Jonatán para que no se entristezca». Pero ciertamente, vive el Señor y vive tu alma(C), que apenas[d] hay un paso entre mí y la muerte. 4 Entonces Jonatán dijo a David: Lo que tú digas[e], haré por ti. 5 Y David respondió a Jonatán: He aquí, mañana es luna nueva y debo sentarme a comer con el rey(D), pero déjame ir para que me esconda en el campo hasta el atardecer del tercer día[f](E). 6 Si tu padre me echa de menos, entonces di: «David me rogó mucho que le dejara ir a toda prisa[g] a Belén su ciudad(F), porque allá se celebra el sacrificio anual por toda la familia(G)». 7 Si él dice[h]: «Está bien», tu siervo estará seguro; pero si se enoja, sabrás que ha decidido hacer el mal(H). 8 Trata entonces con misericordia a tu siervo, ya que has hecho entrar a tu siervo en un pacto del Señor contigo(I). Pero si hay maldad en mí, mátame tú(J), pues, ¿por qué llevarme a tu padre? 9 Respondió Jonatán: ¡Nunca tal te suceda! Porque si yo me entero que mi padre ha decidido que el mal caiga sobre ti, ¿no te lo avisaría yo? 10 David respondió a Jonatán: ¿Quién me avisará si[i] tu padre te responde ásperamente? 11 Y Jonatán dijo a David: Ven, salgamos al campo. Y ambos salieron al campo.

12 Entonces Jonatán dijo a David: El Señor, Dios de Israel, sea testigo. Cuando yo haya hablado con[j] mi padre como a esta hora mañana, o al tercer día, he aquí, si hay buen ánimo para con David, ¿no habré de enviar a ti para hacértelo saber[k]? 13 Si mi padre quiere hacerte mal, que así haga el Señor a Jonatán y aun le añada si no te lo hago saber[l] y te envío para que vayas en paz(K). Y que el Señor sea contigo(L), como ha sido con mi padre. 14 Y si todavía vivo, ¿no me mostrarás la misericordia del Señor, para que no muera? 15 No quitarás[m] tu misericordia de mi casa para siempre, ni aun cuando el Señor haya quitado[n] de la faz de la tierra a cada uno de los enemigos de David(M). 16 Jonatán, pues, hizo un pacto con la casa de David, diciendo: El Señor lo demande de la mano de los enemigos de David(N). 17 Y Jonatán hizo jurar a David otra vez a causa de su amor por él, pues le amaba como a sí mismo[o](O).

18 Entonces Jonatán le dijo: Mañana es luna nueva y serás echado de menos, porque tu asiento estará vacío(P). 19 Cuando hayas estado ausente tres días, descenderás aprisa y vendrás al lugar donde te escondiste el día de aquel suceso, y permanecerás junto a la piedra de Ezel. 20 Yo tiraré tres saetas hacia un lado, como tirando al blanco. 21 Y he aquí, enviaré al muchacho, diciendo: «Ve, busca las saetas». Si digo claramente al muchacho: «He aquí, las saetas están más acá de ti, tómalas», entonces ven porque hay seguridad para ti y no habrá mal[p], vive el Señor. 22 Pero si digo[q] al joven: «He aquí, las saetas están más allá de ti(Q)», vete, porque el Señor te ha enviado. 23 En cuanto al acuerdo[r] del cual tú y yo hemos hablado(R), he aquí, el Señor está entre nosotros dos[s] para siempre(S).

24 Se escondió, pues, David en el campo. Cuando vino la luna nueva, el rey se sentó a comer[t]. 25 El rey se sentó en su asiento como de costumbre, el asiento junto a la pared; entonces Jonatán se levantó, y Abner se sentó al lado de Saúl, pero el lugar de David estaba vacío(T). 26 Sin embargo, Saúl no dijo nada aquel día, porque se dijo: Es una casualidad, no estará limpio; de seguro que no se ha purificado(U). 27 Y sucedió al día siguiente, el segundo día de la luna nueva, que el lugar de David estaba aún vacío; entonces Saúl dijo a su hijo Jonatán: ¿Por qué no ha venido el hijo de Isaí a la comida ni ayer ni hoy? 28 Y Jonatán respondió a Saúl: David me rogó encarecidamente que le dejara ir a Belén(V), 29 y dijo: «Te ruego que me dejes ir[u], pues nuestra familia tiene sacrificio en la ciudad y mi hermano me ha mandado que asista. Ahora pues, si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, te ruego me dejes ir para ver a mis hermanos». Por este motivo no ha venido a la mesa del rey.

30 Se encendió la ira de Saúl contra Jonatán, y le dijo: ¡Hijo de perversa y rebelde! ¿Acaso no sé yo que prefieres al hijo de Isaí, para tu propia vergüenza y para vergüenza de la desnudez de tu madre? 31 Pues mientras[v] viva sobre la tierra el hijo de Isaí, ni tú ni tu reino serán establecidos. Ahora pues, manda a traérmelo, porque ciertamente ha de morir[w](W). 32 Pero Jonatán respondió a su padre Saúl, y le dijo: ¿Por qué ha de morir? ¿Qué ha hecho(X)? 33 Entonces Saúl le arrojó la lanza para matarlo(Y); así Jonatán supo que su padre había decidido matar a David(Z). 34 Jonatán se levantó de la mesa ardiendo en ira y no comió pan el segundo día de la luna nueva, pues estaba entristecido por David, porque su padre le había afrentado.

35 A[x] la mañana siguiente Jonatán salió al campo para reunirse[y] con David, y un muchacho pequeño iba con él. 36 Y dijo al[z] muchacho: Corre, busca ahora las saetas que voy a tirar(AA). Y mientras el muchacho corría, tiró una[aa] saeta más allá de él. 37 Cuando el muchacho llegó a[ab] la saeta que Jonatán había tirado, Jonatán le gritó al[ac] muchacho, y dijo: ¿No está la saeta más allá de ti(AB)? 38 Y Jonatán llamó al[ad] muchacho: Corre, date prisa, no te detengas. Y el muchacho de Jonatán recogió la saeta y volvió a su señor. 39 Pero el muchacho no estaba al tanto de nada; solo Jonatán y David sabían del asunto. 40 Entonces Jonatán dio sus armas al[ae] muchacho y le dijo: Vete, llévalas a la ciudad. 41 Cuando el muchacho se fue, David se levantó del lado del sur, y cayendo rostro en tierra, se postró tres veces(AC). Y se besaron el uno al otro y lloraron juntos, pero David lloró más(AD). 42 Y Jonatán dijo a David: Vete en paz(AE), ya que nos hemos jurado el uno al otro en el nombre del Señor, diciendo: «El Señor esté entre tú y yo, y entre mi descendencia[af] y tu descendencia[ag] para siempre(AF)». [ah]David se levantó y se fue, y Jonatán entró en la ciudad.

Jonatán ayuda a David

20 David huyó de Naiot de Ramá, y fue adonde estaba Jonatán, para decirle:

—¿Qué he hecho yo? ¿Cuál es mi culpa? ¿Qué pecado he cometido contra tu padre, para que él busque matarme?

2 Y Jonatán le contestó:

—¡Dios no lo quiera! ¡No te matará! Ten en cuenta que mi padre no hace nada, sea o no importante, sin comunicármelo. ¿Por qué razón iba mi padre a ocultarme este asunto? ¡No puede ser!

3 Pero David insistió:

—Tu padre sabe muy bien que yo cuento con tu estimación, y no querrá que lo sepas para evitarte un disgusto. ¡Pero te juro por el Señor y por ti mismo que estoy a un paso de la muerte!

4 Entonces Jonatán le preguntó:

—¿Qué quieres que haga yo por ti?

5 David respondió:

—Mira, mañana es la fiesta de luna nueva, y debo sentarme a comer con el rey. Pero déjame que me esconda en el campo hasta pasado mañana por la tarde, 6 y si tu padre pregunta por mí, dile que yo te pedí con urgencia permiso para ir a mi pueblo, a Belén, porque toda mi familia celebra allí el sacrificio anual. 7 Si contesta que está bien, quiere decir que puedo estar tranquilo; pero si se enoja, sabrás que ha decidido hacerme daño. 8 Así que hazme este favor, ya que soy tu servidor y nos hemos jurado amistad ante el Señor. Ahora bien, si la culpa es mía, mátame tú mismo. No es necesario que me lleves ante tu padre.

9 Pero Jonatán respondió:

—¡No pienses tal cosa! Si llego a saber que mi padre está resuelto a hacerte mal, te lo comunicaré.

10 Entonces David le preguntó:

—¿Quién me avisará en caso de que tu padre te responda de mal modo?

11 Jonatán respondió:

—Ven conmigo. Salgamos al campo.

Los dos salieron al campo, 12 y allí Jonatán le dijo a David:

—Te juro por el Señor y Dios de Israel que entre mañana y pasado mañana, a esta misma hora, trataré de conocer las intenciones de mi padre. Si su actitud hacia ti es buena, te mandaré aviso; 13 pero si mi padre intenta hacerte mal, que el Señor me castigue duramente si no te aviso y te ayudo a escapar tranquilamente. ¡Y que el Señor te ayude como ayudó a mi padre! 14 Ahora bien, si para entonces vivo todavía, trátame con la misma bondad con que el Señor te ha tratado. Y si muero, 15-16 no dejes de ser bondadoso con mi familia. ¡Que el Señor les pida cuentas a tus enemigos, y los destruya por completo!

De esta manera, Jonatán hizo un pacto con David, 17 y por el cariño que Jonatán le tenía, volvió a hacerle el juramento, pues lo quería tanto como a sí mismo. 18 Luego le dijo:

—Mañana es la fiesta de luna nueva, y como tu asiento va a estar desocupado, te echarán de menos. 19 Pero al tercer día se notará aún más tu ausencia. Por tanto, vete al sitio donde te escondiste la vez pasada, y colócate junto a aquel montón de piedras. 20 Yo lanzaré tres flechas hacia aquel lado, como si estuviera tirando al blanco, 21 y le diré a mi criado: “Ve a buscar las flechas.” Si le digo: “Las flechas están más acá de ti; anda, tómalas”, podrás salir tranquilo, porque nada te va a pasar. Te lo juro por el Señor. 22 Pero si le digo: “Las flechas están más allá”, vete, porque el Señor quiere que te vayas. 23 En cuanto a la promesa que nos hemos hecho, el Señor es nuestro testigo para siempre.

24 David se escondió en el campo, y cuando llegó la fiesta de luna nueva, el rey se sentó a la mesa para comer. 25 Se sentó en el lugar de costumbre, junto a la pared. Jonatán se colocó enfrente, y Abner se sentó al lado de Saúl. El asiento de David quedó vacío. 26 Aquel día Saúl no dijo nada, porque se imaginó que algo impuro le habría ocurrido y no estaría purificado. 27 Pero al día siguiente, que era el segundo día de la fiesta, el asiento de David quedó también vacío. Entonces le preguntó Saúl a su hijo Jonatán:

—¿Por qué no vino ayer el hijo de Jesé a la comida, ni tampoco hoy?

28 Y Jonatán le respondió:

—David me pidió con urgencia permiso para ir a Belén. 29 Me rogó que le diera permiso, pues su familia celebraba un sacrificio en su pueblo y su hermano le ordenaba ir. También me dijo que si yo le hacía ese favor, se daría una escapada para visitar a sus parientes. Por eso no se ha sentado a comer con Su Majestad.

30 Entonces Saúl se enfureció con Jonatán, y le dijo:

—¡Hijo de mala madre! ¿Acaso no sé que tú eres el amigo íntimo del hijo de Jesé, para vergüenza tuya y de tu madre? 31 Mientras él esté vivo en esta tierra, ni tú ni tu reino estarán seguros. ¡Así que manda a buscarlo, y tráemelo, porque merece la muerte!

32 Pero Jonatán le contestó:

—¿Y por qué habría de morir? ¿Qué es lo que ha hecho?

33 Saúl levantó su lanza para herir a Jonatán, con lo que éste comprendió que su padre estaba decidido a matar a David. 34 Entonces, lleno de furia, se levantó Jonatán de la mesa y no participó en la comida del segundo día de la fiesta, porque sentía un gran pesar por David, ya que su padre lo había ofendido. 35 A la mañana siguiente, a la hora de la cita con David, Jonatán salió al campo acompañado de un criado joven, 36 al cual le ordenó:

—Corre a buscar en seguida las flechas que yo dispare.

El criado echó a correr, mientras Jonatán disparaba una flecha de modo que cayera lejos de él. 37 Y cuando el criado llegó al lugar donde había caído la flecha, Jonatán le gritó al criado con todas sus fuerzas:

—¡La flecha está más allá de ti!

38 Y una vez más Jonatán le gritó al criado:

—¡Date prisa, corre, no te detengas!

El criado de Jonatán recogió las flechas y se las trajo a su amo, 39 pero no se dio cuenta de nada, porque sólo Jonatán y David conocían la contraseña. 40 Después Jonatán entregó sus armas a su criado, y le ordenó llevarlas de vuelta a la ciudad.

41 En cuanto el criado se fue, David salió de detrás del montón de piedras, y ya ante Jonatán se inclinó tres veces hasta tocar el suelo con la frente. Luego se besaron y lloraron juntos hasta que David se desahogó. 42a Por último, Jonatán le dijo a David:

—Vete tranquilo, pues el juramento que hemos hecho los dos ha sido en el nombre del Señor, y hemos pedido que para siempre esté él entre nosotros dos y en las relaciones entre tus descendientes y los míos.

42b (21.1) Después David se puso en camino, y Jonatán regresó a la ciudad.

20 大卫从拉玛的拿约逃走，来见约拿单，说：“我作了甚么？我有甚么罪孽？我在你父亲面前犯了甚么罪，他竟寻索我的性命呢？” 2 约拿单对他说：“绝对没有这事，你必不会死。我父亲作事，无论大小，没有不让我知道的，为甚么这事他偏要隐瞒我呢？不会这样的。” 3 大卫再起誓说：“你父亲一定知道我在你眼中蒙恩，就心里想：‘不要让约拿单知道这事，免得他伤心。’可是，我指着永活的耶和华，又指着你的性命起誓，我离死只差一步。” 4 约拿单对大卫说：“你心里想要甚么，我必为你作成。” 5 大卫就对约拿单说：“你看，明天是初一，我本该与王一同坐席。但是，求你容我去藏在田里，直到后天晚上。 6 如果你父亲不见我在座，你就说：‘大卫恳求我让他赶回他的本城伯利恒去，因为他全家在那里有献年祭的事。’ 7 如果你父亲这样说：‘好！’那么仆人就平安无事了；如果他大大发怒，你就知道，他决意要害我了。 8 求你以慈爱待仆人，因为你曾与仆人在耶和华面前立盟约。如果我有罪孽，你就亲手把我杀死，为甚么要把我交给你父亲呢？” 9 约拿单说：“绝对没有这事，如果我知道我父亲决意要害你，我会不告诉你吗？” 10 大卫对约拿单说：“如果你父亲严厉地回答你，谁来告诉我呢？” 11 约拿单对大卫说：“你来，我们出到田里去吧！”他们二人就出到田里去了。

12 约拿单对大卫说：“愿耶和华以色列的　神作证，明天或后天约在这个时候，我探出了我父亲的意思，如果他对你有好感，那时我会不派人来告诉你吗？ 13 假如我父亲有意要害你，我若是不告诉你，不让你走，不使你平平安安地离去，愿耶和华加倍惩罚我。愿耶和华与你同在，好象从前与我父亲同在一样。 14 我活着的时候，求你以耶和华的慈爱待我，使我不致于死。 15 我死了以后，耶和华从地上一一剪除大卫的仇敌的时候，你也不可向我的家永远断绝你的慈爱。” 16 于是约拿单与大卫家立盟约，说：“愿耶和华藉大卫仇敌的手追讨违背盟约的罪。” 17 约拿单由于爱大卫，就使大卫再起誓；他爱大卫如同爱自己的命。

18 约拿单对大卫说：“明天是初一，因为你的座位空着，人必注意到你不在。 19 到后天，你要赶快下去，到你以前出事那天藏身的地方，在以色盘石旁边等候。 20 我要向盘石旁边射三支箭，好象射箭靶一样。 21 然后，我要派一个仆人去，说：‘你去把箭找回来。’如果我对那仆人说：‘看哪！箭在你的后面，把箭拿回来。’你就可以回来，因为我指着永活的耶和华起誓，你必平安无事。 22 如果我对仆人说：‘看哪！箭在你的前面。’你就要离去，因为是耶和华打发你去的。 23 至于你我之间所说的这事，有耶和华永远在你我之间作证。”

扫罗怒责约拿单

24 于是大卫在田里藏起来。到了初一，王坐席吃饭。 25 王照常坐在他的座位上，就是靠墙的座位，约拿单坐在对面（按照《马索拉文本》，“坐在对面”作“站起来”；现参照《七十士译本》翻译），押尼珥坐在扫罗旁边，大卫的座位却空着。 26 那天扫罗没有说甚么，因为他心里想：“这是恰巧的事，或许大卫沾染了不洁，还没有得到洁净。” 27 次日，就是初二，大卫的座位仍是空着。于是扫罗问他的儿子约拿单：“为甚么耶西的儿子昨天今天都没有来吃饭呢？” 28 约拿单回答扫罗：“大卫恳切地求我让他回伯利恒去。 29 他说：‘求你让我去，因为我们的家在城里有献祭的事，我哥哥吩咐我去。所以，我若是在你眼前蒙恩，求你让我离开，看看我的哥哥们。’因此，大卫没有来赴王的筵席。”

30 于是扫罗向约拿单发怒，对他说：“你这邪僻悖逆妇人所生的，我岂不知道你喜悦耶西的儿子，自取羞辱，也羞辱生你的母亲吗？ 31 因为只要耶西的儿子还活在这世上，你和你的国就不能稳固。现在，你要派人去把他抓到我这里来，因为他是该死的。” 32 约拿单回答他父亲扫罗说：“为甚么要把他处死呢？他作了甚么事呢？” 33 扫罗向着约拿单把枪掷过去，要刺杀他。约拿单就知道，他父亲已经决意要杀死大卫。 34 约拿单怒气冲冲地从席间退去，初二这天，他没有吃饭；因为他父亲羞辱了大卫，他就为大卫担忧。

大卫与约拿单泣别

35 到了早晨，约拿单照着与大卫约定的时候，出到田里去，有一个小童与他在一起。 36 他对那童仆说：“你跑去，把我所射的箭找回来。”那童仆跑去的时候，约拿单就把箭射到他前面。 37 那童仆到了约拿单的箭射到的地方，约拿单就在那童仆的背后喊叫：“箭不是在你的前面吗？” 38 约拿单又在那童仆的背后喊叫：“赶快跑去！不要停留！”那童仆就把箭拾起来，回到他主人那里去。 39 那童仆一点也不知道这是甚么意思，只有约拿单和大卫知道。 40 约拿单把自己的武器交给他的童仆，对他说：“你带回城里去吧！” 41 那童仆一离去，大卫就从石堆的南边起来，脸伏于地，叩拜了三次。二人互相亲吻，相对哭泣，大卫哭得更悲痛。 42 约拿单对大卫说：“你平平安安走吧！我们二人曾指着耶和华的名起誓说：‘愿耶和华在你我之间，也在我的后裔和你的后裔之间作证，直到永远。’”大卫就起身离开，约拿单也回城里去了（“大卫就起身离开，约拿单也回城里去了。”在《马索拉文本》为21:1）。

David and Jonathan

20 Then David fled from Naioth at Ramah and went to Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my crime? How have I wronged(A) your father, that he is trying to kill me?”(B)

2 “Never!” Jonathan replied. “You are not going to die! Look, my father doesn’t do anything, great or small, without letting me know. Why would he hide this from me? It isn’t so!”

3 But David took an oath(C) and said, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.’ Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is only a step between me and death.”

4 Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”

5 So David said, “Look, tomorrow is the New Moon feast,(D) and I am supposed to dine with the king; but let me go and hide(E) in the field until the evening of the day after tomorrow. 6 If your father misses me at all, tell him, ‘David earnestly asked my permission(F) to hurry to Bethlehem,(G) his hometown, because an annual(H) sacrifice is being made there for his whole clan.’ 7 If he says, ‘Very well,’ then your servant is safe. But if he loses his temper,(I) you can be sure that he is determined(J) to harm me. 8 As for you, show kindness to your servant, for you have brought him into a covenant(K) with you before the Lord. If I am guilty, then kill(L) me yourself! Why hand me over to your father?”

9 “Never!” Jonathan said. “If I had the least inkling that my father was determined to harm you, wouldn’t I tell you?”

10 David asked, “Who will tell me if your father answers you harshly?”

11 “Come,” Jonathan said, “let’s go out into the field.” So they went there together.

12 Then Jonathan said to David, “I swear by the Lord, the God of Israel, that I will surely sound(M) out my father by this time the day after tomorrow! If he is favorably disposed toward you, will I not send you word and let you know? 13 But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with Jonathan, be it ever so severely,(N) if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. May the Lord be with(O) you as he has been with my father. 14 But show me unfailing kindness(P) like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live, so that I may not be killed, 15 and do not ever cut off your kindness from my family(Q)—not even when the Lord has cut off every one of David’s enemies from the face of the earth.”

16 So Jonathan(R) made a covenant(S) with the house of David, saying, “May the Lord call David’s enemies to account.(T)” 17 And Jonathan had David reaffirm his oath(U) out of love for him, because he loved him as he loved himself.

18 Then Jonathan said to David, “Tomorrow is the New Moon feast. You will be missed, because your seat will be empty.(V) 19 The day after tomorrow, toward evening, go to the place where you hid(W) when this trouble began, and wait by the stone Ezel. 20 I will shoot three arrows(X) to the side of it, as though I were shooting at a target. 21 Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them here,’ then come, because, as surely as the Lord lives, you are safe; there is no danger. 22 But if I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are beyond(Y) you,’ then you must go, because the Lord has sent you away. 23 And about the matter you and I discussed—remember, the Lord is witness(Z) between you and me forever.”

24 So David hid in the field, and when the New Moon feast(AA) came, the king sat down to eat. 25 He sat in his customary place by the wall, opposite Jonathan,[a] and Abner sat next to Saul, but David’s place was empty.(AB) 26 Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, “Something must have happened to David to make him ceremonially unclean—surely he is unclean.(AC)” 27 But the next day, the second day of the month, David’s place was empty again. Then Saul said to his son Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of Jesse come to the meal, either yesterday or today?”

28 Jonathan answered, “David earnestly asked me for permission(AD) to go to Bethlehem. 29 He said, ‘Let me go, because our family is observing a sacrifice(AE) in the town and my brother has ordered me to be there. If I have found favor in your eyes, let me get away to see my brothers.’ That is why he has not come to the king’s table.”

30 Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan and he said to him, “You son of a perverse and rebellious woman! Don’t I know that you have sided with the son of Jesse to your own shame and to the shame of the mother who bore you? 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom(AF) will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!”

32 “Why(AG) should he be put to death? What(AH) has he done?” Jonathan asked his father. 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended(AI) to kill David.

34 Jonathan got up from the table in fierce anger; on that second day of the feast he did not eat, because he was grieved at his father’s shameful treatment of David.

35 In the morning Jonathan went out to the field for his meeting with David. He had a small boy with him, 36 and he said to the boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. 37 When the boy came to the place where Jonathan’s arrow had fallen, Jonathan called out after him, “Isn’t the arrow beyond(AJ) you?” 38 Then he shouted, “Hurry! Go quickly! Don’t stop!” The boy picked up the arrow and returned to his master. 39 (The boy knew nothing about all this; only Jonathan and David knew.) 40 Then Jonathan gave his weapons to the boy and said, “Go, carry them back to town.”

41 After the boy had gone, David got up from the south side of the stone and bowed down before Jonathan three times, with his face to the ground.(AK) Then they kissed each other and wept together—but David wept the most.

42 Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace,(AL) for we have sworn friendship(AM) with each other in the name of the Lord,(AN) saying, ‘The Lord is witness(AO) between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants forever.(AP)’” Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.[b]
