2 Entonces Ana oró y dijo:
«Mi corazón se regocija en Jehová,
mi poder se exalta en Jehová;
mi boca se ríe de mis enemigos,
por cuanto me alegré en tu salvación.
2 No hay santo como Jehová;
porque no hay nadie fuera de ti
ni refugio como el Dios nuestro.
3 No multipliquéis las palabras de orgullo y altanería;
cesen las palabras arrogantes de vuestra boca,
porque Jehová es el Dios que todo lo sabe
y a él le toca pesar las acciones.
4 Los arcos de los fuertes se han quebrado
y los débiles se ciñen de vigor.
5 Los saciados se alquilan por pan
y los hambrientos dejan de tener hambre;
hasta la estéril da a luz siete veces,
mas la que tenía muchos hijos languidece.
6 Jehová da la muerte y la vida;
hace descender al seol y retornar.
7 Jehová empobrece y enriquece,
abate y enaltece.
8 Él levanta del polvo al pobre;
alza del basurero al menesteroso,
para hacerlo sentar con príncipes
y heredar un sitio de honor.
Porque de Jehová son las columnas de la tierra;
él afirmó sobre ellas el mundo.
9 Él guarda los pies de sus santos,
mas los impíos perecen en tinieblas;
porque nadie será fuerte por su propia fuerza.
10 Delante de Jehová serán quebrantados sus adversarios
y sobre ellos tronará desde los cielos.
Jehová juzgará los confines de la tierra,
dará poder a su Rey
y exaltará el poderío de su Ungido.»
11 Luego Elcana regresó a su casa en Ramá, y el niño se quedó para servir a Jehová junto al sacerdote Elí.
Impiedad de los hijos de Elí
12 Los hijos de Elí eran hombres impíos, que no tenían conocimiento de Jehová. 13 Y era costumbre de los sacerdotes con el pueblo, que cuando alguien ofrecía sacrificio, mientras se cocía la carne, venía el criado del sacerdote trayendo en su mano un garfio de tres dientes 14 y lo metía en el perol, en la olla, en el caldero o en la marmita; y todo lo que sacaba el garfio, el sacerdote lo tomaba para sí. De esta manera hacían con todo israelita que venía a Silo. 15 Asimismo, antes de quemar la grasa, venía el criado del sacerdote y decía al que sacrificaba: «Dame carne para asársela al sacerdote; porque no aceptará de ti carne cocida sino cruda.» 16 Y si el hombre le respondía: «Hay que quemar la grasa primero, y después toma tanto como quieras», él decía: «No, dámela ahora mismo; de otra manera la tomaré por la fuerza.» 17 Así pues, el pecado de estos ayudantes era muy grande ante Jehová, porque menospreciaban las ofrendas de Jehová.
18 Y el joven Samuel servía en la presencia de Jehová, vestido de un efod de lino. 19 Su madre le hacía una pequeña túnica y se la traía cada año, cuando subía con su marido para ofrecer el sacrificio acostumbrado. 20 Entonces Elí bendecía a Elcana y a su mujer diciendo: «Jehová te dé hijos de esta mujer en lugar del que pidió a Jehová.» Luego regresaban a su casa. 21 Visitó Jehová a Ana y ella concibió; y dio a luz tres hijos y dos hijas. Y el joven Samuel crecía delante de Jehová.
22 Elí era muy viejo, pero cuando supo lo que sus hijos hacían con todo Israel y cómo dormían con las mujeres que velaban a la puerta del Tabernáculo de reunión, 23 les dijo: «¿Por qué hacéis cosas semejantes? Oigo hablar a todo este pueblo vuestro mal proceder. 24 No, hijos míos, porque no es buena fama la que yo oigo, pues hacéis pecar al pueblo de Jehová. 25 Si peca el hombre contra el hombre, los jueces lo juzgarán; pero si alguno peca contra Jehová, ¿quién rogará por él?» Pero ellos no oyeron la voz de su padre, porque Jehová había resuelto hacerlos morir.
26 Mientras tanto, el joven Samuel iba creciendo y haciéndose grato delante de Dios y delante de los hombres.
27 Vino un varón de Dios ante Elí, y le dijo: «Así ha dicho Jehová: “¿No me manifesté yo claramente a la casa de tu padre cuando estaban en Egipto en la casa del faraón? 28 Lo escogí para que fuera mi sacerdote entre todas las tribus de Israel, para que ofreciera sobre mi altar, quemara incienso y llevara efod delante de mí. Yo concedí a la casa de tu padre todas las ofrendas de los hijos de Israel. 29 ¿Por qué habéis pisoteado los sacrificios y las ofrendas que yo mandé ofrecer en el Tabernáculo? ¿Por qué has honrado a tus hijos más que a mí, haciéndolos engordar con lo principal de todas las ofrendas de mi pueblo Israel?” 30 Por eso Jehová, el Dios de Israel, dice: “Yo había prometido que tu casa y la casa de tu padre andarían siempre delante de mí”; pero ahora ha dicho Jehová: “Nunca haga yo tal cosa, porque yo honro a los que me honran, y los que me desprecian serán tenidos en poco. 31 Vienen días en que cortaré tu brazo y el brazo de la casa de tu padre, de modo que no haya ancianos en tu casa. 32 Verás tu casa humillada, mientras Dios colma de bienes a Israel, de manera que nunca habrá ancianos en tu casa. 33 Aquel de los tuyos a quien yo no excluya del servicio de mi altar, será para que se consuman tus ojos y se llene tu alma de dolor; y todos los nacidos en tu casa morirán en la plenitud de la edad. 34 Te será por señal esto que acontecerá a tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees: ambos morirán el mismo día. 35 En cambio, yo me suscitaré un sacerdote fiel, que obre conforme a mi corazón y mis deseos; le edificaré casa firme y andará delante de mi ungido todos los días. 36 El que haya quedado en tu casa vendrá a postrarse delante de él por una moneda de plata y un bocado de pan, y le dirá: ‘Te ruego que me agregues a alguno de los servicios sacerdotales para que pueda comer un bocado de pan.’”»

Hannah’s Prayer
2 Then Hannah prayed and said:(A)
“My heart rejoices(B) in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn[a](C) is lifted high.
My mouth boasts(D) over my enemies,(E)
for I delight in your deliverance.
2 “There is no one holy(F) like(G) the Lord;
there is no one besides you;
there is no Rock(H) like our God.
3 “Do not keep talking so proudly
or let your mouth speak such arrogance,(I)
for the Lord is a God who knows,(J)
and by him deeds(K) are weighed.(L)
4 “The bows of the warriors are broken,(M)
but those who stumbled are armed with strength.(N)
5 Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
but those who were hungry(O) are hungry no more.
She who was barren(P) has borne seven children,
but she who has had many sons pines away.
6 “The Lord brings death and makes alive;(Q)
he brings down to the grave and raises up.(R)
7 The Lord sends poverty and wealth;(S)
he humbles and he exalts.(T)
8 He raises(U) the poor(V) from the dust(W)
and lifts the needy(X) from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
and has them inherit a throne of honor.(Y)
“For the foundations(Z) of the earth are the Lord’s;
on them he has set the world.
9 He will guard the feet(AA) of his faithful servants,(AB)
but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.(AC)
“It is not by strength(AD) that one prevails;
10 those who oppose the Lord will be broken.(AE)
The Most High will thunder(AF) from heaven;
the Lord will judge(AG) the ends of the earth.
11 Then Elkanah went home to Ramah,(AJ) but the boy ministered(AK) before the Lord under Eli the priest.
Eli’s Wicked Sons
12 Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard(AL) for the Lord. 13 Now it was the practice(AM) of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat(AN) was being boiled 14 and would plunge the fork into the pan or kettle or caldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh. 15 But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
16 If the person said to him, “Let the fat(AO) be burned first, and then take whatever you want,” the servant would answer, “No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force.”
17 This sin of the young men was very great in the Lord’s sight, for they[b] were treating the Lord’s offering with contempt.(AP)
18 But Samuel was ministering(AQ) before the Lord—a boy wearing a linen ephod.(AR) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual(AS) sacrifice. 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the Lord give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed(AT) for and gave to[c] the Lord.” Then they would go home. 21 And the Lord was gracious to Hannah;(AU) she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew(AV) up in the presence of the Lord.
22 Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything(AW) his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women(AX) who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 So he said to them, “Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours. 24 No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If one person sins against another, God[d] may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the Lord, who will(AY) intercede(AZ) for them?” His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the Lord’s will to put them to death.
26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow(BA) in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.(BB)
Prophecy Against the House of Eli
27 Now a man of God(BC) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? 28 I chose(BD) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,(BE) and to wear an ephod(BF) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings(BG) presented by the Israelites. 29 Why do you[e] scorn my sacrifice and offering(BH) that I prescribed for my dwelling?(BI) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’
30 “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.(BJ)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,(BK) but those who despise(BL) me will be disdained.(BM) 31 The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,(BN) 32 and you will see distress(BO) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.(BP) 33 Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants(BQ) will die in the prime of life.
34 “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign(BR) to you—they will both die(BS) on the same day.(BT) 35 I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,(BU) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed(BV) one always. 36 Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,(BW) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.(BX)”’”

Hannah’s Triumphant Prayer

The woman who is childless gives birth to seven,(J)
but the woman with many sons pines away.(K)
6 The Lord brings death and gives life;(L)
He sends some to Sheol, and He raises others up.(M)
7 The Lord brings poverty and gives wealth;(N)
He humbles and He exalts.(O)
8 He raises the poor from the dust(P)
and lifts the needy from the garbage pile.(Q)
He seats them with noblemen(R)
and gives them a throne of honor.[a]
For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;(S)

9 He guards the steps[b] of His faithful ones,(U)
but the wicked perish in darkness,(V)
for a man does not prevail by his own strength.(W)
10 Those who oppose the Lord will be shattered;[c](X)
He will thunder in the heavens against them.(Y)
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth.(Z)
He will give power to His king;
He will lift up the horn of His anointed.(AA)
11 Elkanah went home to Ramah,(AB) but the boy served the Lord in the presence of Eli the priest.(AC)
Eli’s Family Judged
12 Eli’s sons were wicked men;(AD) they had no regard for the Lord(AE) 13 or for the priests’ share of the sacrifices from the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling 14 and plunge it into the container or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot.(AF) The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. 15 Even before the fat was burned,(AG) the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won’t accept boiled meat from you—only raw.” 16 If that man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself,”(AH) the servant would reply, “No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don’t, I’ll take it by force!” 17 So the servants’ sin was very severe in the presence of the Lord, because they treated the Lord’s offering with contempt.(AI)
18 The boy Samuel served in the Lord’s presence(AJ) and wore a linen ephod.(AK) 19 Each year his mother made him a little robe(AL) and took it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.(AM) 20 Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife:(AN) “May the Lord give you children by this woman in place of the one she[d] has given to the Lord.”(AO) Then they would go home.
21 The Lord paid attention to Hannah’s need,(AP) and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the Lord.(AQ)
22 Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel(AR) and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.(AS) 23 He said to them, “Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. 24 No, my sons, the report I hear from the Lord’s people is not good. 25 If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?”(AT) But they would not listen to their father, since the Lord intended to kill them.(AU) 26 By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.(AV)
27 A man of God came to Eli and said to him,(AW) “This is what the Lord says: ‘Didn’t I reveal Myself to your ancestral house when it was in Egypt and belonged to Pharaoh’s palace?(AX) 28 Out of all the tribes of Israel, I selected your house[e] to be priests, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence.(AY) I also gave your house all the Israelite fire offerings. 29 Why, then, do all of you despise My sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship?(AZ) You have honored your sons more than Me,(BA) by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of My people Israel.’
30 “Therefore, this is the declaration of the Lord, the God of Israel:
‘Although I said
your family and your ancestral house
would walk before Me forever,(BB)
the Lord now says, “No longer!”
I will honor those who honor Me,(BC)
but those who despise Me will be disgraced.(BD)
31 “‘Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestral family, so that none in your family will reach old age.(BE) 32 You will see distress in the place of worship,(BF) in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age.(BG) 33 Any man from your family I do not cut off from My altar will bring grief[f] and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently.[g][h] 34 This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas:(BH) both of them will die on the same day.(BI)
35 “‘Then I will raise up a faithful priest(BJ) for Myself. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him,(BK) and he will walk before My anointed one for all time.(BL) 36 Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.’”

but the feeble gird on strength.
5 Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger.
The barren has borne seven,
but she who has many children is forlorn.
6 The Lord kills and brings to life;
he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
7 The Lord makes poor and makes rich;
he brings low, he also exalts.
8 He raises up the poor from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes
and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
and on them he has set the world.
9 “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones;
but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;
for not by might shall a man prevail.
10 The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces;
against them he will thunder in heaven.
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;

Eli’s Wicked Sons
11 Then Elka′nah went home to Ramah. And the boy ministered to the Lord, in the presence of Eli the priest.
12 Now the sons of Eli were worthless men; they had no regard for the Lord. 13 The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, 14 and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself.[a] So they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. 15 Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but raw.” 16 And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now; and if not, I will take it by force.” 17 Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the Lord; for the men treated the offering of the Lord with contempt.
The Child Samuel at Shiloh
18 Samuel was ministering before the Lord, a boy girded with a linen ephod. 19 And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. 20 Then Eli would bless Elka′nah and his wife, and say, “The Lord give you children by this woman for the loan which she lent to[b] the Lord”; so then they would return to their home.
21 And the Lord visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the Lord.
Prophecy against Eli’s Household
22 Now Eli was very old, and he heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 23 And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all the people. 24 No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad. 25 If a man sins against a man, God will mediate for him; but if a man sins against the Lord, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father; for it was the will of the Lord to slay them.
26 Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men.
27 And there came a man of God to Eli, and said to him, “Thus the Lord has said, ‘I revealed[c] myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh. 28 And I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me; and I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. 29 Why then look with greedy eye at[d] my sacrifices and my offerings which I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves upon the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ 30 Therefore the Lord the God of Israel declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me for ever’; but now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. 31 Behold, the days are coming, when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. 32 Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity which shall be bestowed upon Israel; and there shall not be an old man in your house for ever. 33 The man of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep out his[e] eyes and grieve his[f] heart; and all the increase of your house shall die by the sword of men.[g] 34 And this which shall befall your two sons, Hophni and Phin′ehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. 35 And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed for ever. 36 And every one who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and shall say, “Put me, I pray you, in one of the priest’s places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’”
