Prophecy Against the House of Eli

²⁷ Now a man of God^(A) came to Eli and said to him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh? ²⁸ I chose^(B) your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense,^(C) and to wear an ephod^(D) in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings^(E) presented by the Israelites. ²⁹ Why do you^[a] scorn my sacrifice and offering^(F) that I prescribed for my dwelling?^(G) Why do you honor your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?’

³⁰ “Therefore the Lord, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.^(H)’ But now the Lord declares: ‘Far be it from me! Those who honor me I will honor,^(I) but those who despise^(J) me will be disdained.^{(K) 31} The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,^{(L) 32} and you will see distress^(M) in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.^{(N) 33} Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants^(O) will die in the prime of life.

³⁴ “‘And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign^(P) to you—they will both die^(Q) on the same day.^{(R) 35} I will raise up for myself a faithful priest,^(S) who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed^(T) one always. ³⁶ Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead,^(U) “Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat.^(V)”’”

The Lord Calls Samuel

3 The boy Samuel ministered^(W) before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare;^(X) there were not many visions.^(Y)

² One night Eli, whose eyes^(Z) were becoming so weak that he could barely see,^(AA) was lying down in his usual place. ³ The lamp^(AB) of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house^(AC) of the Lord, where the ark^(AD) of God was. ⁴ Then the Lord called Samuel.

Samuel answered, “Here I am.^(AE)” ⁵ And he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

But Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.

⁶ Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

“My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.”

⁷ Now Samuel did not yet know^(AF) the Lord: The word^(AG) of the Lord had not yet been revealed^(AH) to him.

⁸ A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.”

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. ⁹ So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

¹⁰ The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!^(AI)”

Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

¹¹ And the Lord said to Samuel: “See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.^{(AJ) 12} At that time I will carry out against Eli everything^(AK) I spoke against his family—from beginning to end. ¹³ For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God,^[b] and he failed to restrain^(AL) them. ¹⁴ Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, ‘The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned^(AM) for by sacrifice or offering.’”

¹⁵ Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the Lord. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision, ¹⁶ but Eli called him and said, “Samuel, my son.”

Samuel answered, “Here I am.”

¹⁷ “What was it he said to you?” Eli asked. “Do not hide^(AN) it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely,^(AO) if you hide from me anything he told you.” ¹⁸ So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, “He is the Lord; let him do what is good in his eyes.”^(AP)

¹⁹ The Lord was with^(AQ) Samuel as he grew^(AR) up, and he let none^(AS) of Samuel’s words fall to the ground. ²⁰ And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba^(AT) recognized that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the Lord.^{(AU) 21} The Lord continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed^(AV) himself to Samuel through his word.
