David este prigonit de Saul
19 Saul a vorbit fiului său Ionatan şi tuturor slujitorilor lui să omoare pe David. 2 Dar Ionatan, fiul lui Saul, care iubea(A) mult pe David, i-a dat de ştire şi i-a zis: „Tatăl meu, Saul, caută să te omoare. Păzeşte-te dar mâine dimineaţă, stai într-un loc tăinuit şi ascunde-te. 3 Eu voi ieşi şi voi sta lângă tatăl meu în câmpul în care vei fi; voi vorbi tatălui meu despre tine, voi vedea ce va zice şi-ţi voi spune.” 4 Ionatan a vorbit(B) bine de David tatălui său Saul: „Să nu facă împăratul”, a zis el, „un păcat(C) faţă de robul său David, căci el n-a făcut niciun păcat faţă de tine. Dimpotrivă, a lucrat pentru binele tău; 5 şi-a pus în joc viaţa(D), a ucis(E) pe filistean şi Domnul(F) a dat o mare izbăvire pentru tot Israelul. Tu ai văzut şi te-ai bucurat. Pentru ce(G) să păcătuieşti(H) împotriva unui sânge nevinovat şi să omori fără pricină pe David?” 6 Saul a ascultat glasul lui Ionatan şi a jurat zicând: „Viu este Domnul că David nu va muri!” 7 Ionatan a chemat pe David şi i-a spus toate cuvintele acestea, apoi l-a adus la Saul şi David a fost înaintea lui ca mai înainte(I).
David, scăpat de Mical
8 Războiul urma înainte. David a mers împotriva filistenilor şi s-a bătut cu ei, le-a pricinuit o mare înfrângere şi au fugit dinaintea lui. 9 Atunci, duhul(J) cel rău, trimis de Domnul, a venit peste Saul, care şedea în casă cu suliţa în mână. David cânta, 10 şi Saul a vrut să-l pironească cu suliţa de perete. Dar David s-a ferit de el, şi Saul a lovit cu suliţa în perete. David a fugit şi a scăpat noaptea. 11 Saul a trimis(K) nişte oameni acasă la David ca să-l pândească şi să-l omoare dimineaţa. Dar Mical, nevasta lui David, i-a dat de ştire şi i-a zis: „Dacă nu fugi în noaptea aceasta, mâine vei fi omorât.” 12 Ea l-a pogorât(L) pe fereastră şi David a plecat şi a fugit. Aşa a scăpat. 13 În urmă, Mical a luat terafimul şi l-a pus în pat; i-a pus o piele de capră în jurul capului şi l-a învelit cu o haină. 14 Când a trimis Saul oamenii să ia pe David, ea a zis: „Este bolnav.” 15 Saul i-a trimis înapoi să-l vadă şi a zis: „Aduceţi-l la mine, în patul lui, ca să-l omor.” 16 Oamenii aceia s-au întors şi iată că terafimul era în pat şi în jurul capului era o piele de capră. 17 Saul a zis către Mical: „Pentru ce m-ai înşelat în felul acesta şi ai dat drumul vrăjmaşului meu şi a scăpat?” Mical a răspuns lui Saul: „El mi-a zis: ‘Lasă-mă să plec ori te omor(M)!’ ”
Fuga lui David la Samuel, la Rama
18 Aşa a fugit şi a scăpat David. El s-a dus la Samuel, la Rama, şi i-a istorisit tot ce-i făcuse Saul. Apoi s-a dus cu Samuel şi a locuit în Naiot. 19 Au spus lucrul acesta lui Saul şi au zis: „Iată că David este în Naiot, lângă Rama.” 20 Saul(N) a trimis nişte oameni să ia pe David. Ei au văzut o adunare(O) de proroci, care proroceau cu Samuel în frunte. Duhul lui Dumnezeu a venit peste trimişii lui Saul şi au început şi ei să(P) prorocească. 21 Au spus lui Saul lucrul acesta; el a trimis alţi oameni şi au prorocit şi ei. A mai trimis alţii a treia oară şi au prorocit şi ei. 22 Atunci, Saul s-a dus el însuşi la Rama. Ajungând la fântâna cea mare fără apă, care este la Secu, a întrebat: „Unde sunt Samuel şi David?” I s-a răspuns: „Sunt în Naiot, lângă Rama.” 23 Şi s-a îndreptat spre Naiot, lângă Rama. Duhul(Q) lui Dumnezeu a venit şi peste el şi Saul şi-a văzut de drum, prorocind până la sosirea lui în Naiot, lângă Rama. 24 S-a dezbrăcat(R) de haine şi a prorocit şi el înaintea lui Samuel şi s-a aruncat dezbrăcat(S) la pământ toată ziua aceea şi toată noaptea. De aceea se zice: „Oare(T) şi Saul este între proroci?”

Saul Persecutes David
19 Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill (A)David; but Jonathan, Saul’s son, (B)delighted greatly in David. 2 So Jonathan told David, saying, “My father Saul seeks to kill you. Therefore please be on your guard until morning, and stay in a secret place and hide. 3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you. Then what I observe, I will tell (C)you.”
4 Thus Jonathan (D)spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king (E)sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. 5 For he took his (F)life in his hands and (G)killed the Philistine, and (H)the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. (I)Why then will you (J)sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?”
6 So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” 7 Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these things. So Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence (K)as in times past.
8 And there was war again; and David went out and fought with the Philistines, (L)and struck them with a mighty blow, and they fled from him.
9 Now (M)the distressing spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing music with his hand. 10 Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away from Saul’s presence; and he drove the spear into the wall. So David fled and escaped that night.
11 (N)Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 So Michal (O)let David down through a window. And he went and fled and escaped. 13 And Michal took [a]an image and laid it in the bed, put a cover of goats’ hair for his head, and covered it with clothes. 14 So when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, “He is sick.”
15 Then Saul sent the messengers back to see David, saying, “Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may kill him.” 16 And when the messengers had come in, there was the image in the bed, with a cover of goats’ hair for his head. 17 Then Saul said to Michal, “Why have you deceived me like this, and sent my enemy away, so that he has escaped?”
And Michal answered Saul, “He said to me, ‘Let me go! (P)Why should I kill you?’ ”
18 So David fled and escaped, and went to (Q)Samuel at (R)Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. 19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!” 20 Then (S)Saul sent messengers to take David. (T)And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also (U)prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. Then Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also. 22 Then he also went to Ramah, and came to the great well that is at Sechu. So he asked, and said, “Where are Samuel and David?”
And someone said, “Indeed they are at Naioth in Ramah.” 23 So he went there to Naioth in Ramah. Then (V)the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on and prophesied until he came to Naioth in Ramah. 24 (W)And he also stripped off his clothes and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, and lay down (X)naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, (Y)“Is Saul also among the prophets?”

Saul Tries to Kill David
19 Saul told his son Jonathan(A) and all the attendants to kill(B) David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David 2 and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding(C) and stay there. 3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak(D) to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
4 Jonathan spoke(E) well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong(F) to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. 5 He took his life(G) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory(H) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent(I) man like David by killing him for no reason?”
6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”
7 So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.(J)
8 Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.
9 But an evil[a] spirit(K) from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,(L) 10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded(M) him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.
11 Saul sent men to David’s house to watch(N) it and to kill him in the morning.(O) But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through a window,(P) and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol(Q) and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head.
14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said,(R) “He is ill.”
15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.
17 Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?”
Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’”
18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah(S) and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul: “David is in Naioth at Ramah”; 20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets(T) prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on(U) Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.(V) 21 Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”
“Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said.
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying(W) until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped(X) off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s(Y) presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(Z)
