Saúl intenta matar a David
19 Saúl les comunicó a su hijo Jonatán y a todos sus funcionarios su decisión de matar[a] a David. Pero, como Jonatán le tenía tanto afecto a David, 2 le advirtió: «Mi padre Saúl está buscando una oportunidad para matarte. Así que ten mucho cuidado mañana; escóndete en algún sitio seguro, y quédate allí. 3 Yo saldré con mi padre al campo donde tú estés, y le hablaré de ti. Cuando averigüe lo que pasa, te lo haré saber».
4 Jonatán le habló a su padre Saúl en favor de David:
―¡No vaya el rey a pecar contra su siervo David! —le rogó—. Él no te ha hecho ningún mal; al contrario, lo que ha hecho ha sido de gran beneficio para ti. 5 Para matar al filisteo arriesgó su propia vida, y el Señor le dio una gran victoria a todo Israel. Tú mismo lo viste y te alegraste. ¿Por qué has de pecar contra un inocente y matar a David sin motivo?
6 Saúl le hizo caso a Jonatán, y exclamó:
―Tan cierto como que el Señor vive, te juro que David no morirá.
7 Entonces Jonatán llamó a David y, después de contarle toda la conversación, lo llevó ante Saúl para que estuviera a su servicio como antes.
8 Volvió a estallar la guerra. David salió a pelear contra los filisteos, y los combatió con tal violencia que tuvieron que huir.
9 Sin embargo, un espíritu maligno de parte del Señor se apoderó de Saúl. Estaba sentado en el palacio, con una lanza en la mano. Mientras David tocaba el arpa, 10 intentó clavarlo en la pared con la lanza, pero David esquivó el golpe de Saúl, de modo que la lanza quedó clavada en la pared. Esa misma noche David se dio a la fuga.
11 Entonces Saúl mandó a varios hombres a casa de David, para que lo vigilaran durante la noche y lo mataran al día siguiente. Pero Mical, la esposa de David, le advirtió: «Si no te pones a salvo esta noche, mañana serás hombre muerto». 12 En seguida ella descolgó a David por la ventana, y así él pudo escapar. 13 Luego Mical tomó un ídolo[b] y lo puso en la cama con un tejido de pelo de cabra en la cabeza, y lo cubrió con una sábana.
14 Cuando Saúl mandó a los hombres para apresar a David, Mical les dijo: «Está enfermo». 15 Pero Saúl los mandó de nuevo a buscar a David: «Aunque esté en cama, ¡traédmelo aquí para matarlo!» 16 Al entrar en la casa, los hombres vieron que lo que estaba en la cama era un ídolo, con un tejido de pelo de cabra en la cabeza. 17 Entonces Saúl le preguntó a Mical:
―¿Por qué me has engañado así? ¿Por qué dejaste escapar a mi enemigo?
Ella respondió:
―Él me amenazó con matarme si no lo dejaba escapar.
18 Después de huir y ponerse a salvo, David fue a Ramá para ver a Samuel y contarle todo lo que Saúl le había hecho. Entonces los dos se fueron a vivir a Nayot. 19 Cuando Saúl se enteró de que David estaba en Nayot de Ramá, 20 mandó a sus hombres para que lo apresaran. Pero se encontraron con un grupo de profetas, dirigidos por Samuel, que estaban profetizando. Entonces el Espíritu de Dios vino con poder sobre los hombres de Saúl, y también ellos cayeron en trance profético. 21 Al oír la noticia, Saúl envió otro grupo, pero ellos también cayeron en trance. Luego mandó un tercer grupo, y les pasó lo mismo. 22 Por fin, Saúl en persona fue a Ramá y llegó al gran pozo que está en Secú.
―¿Dónde están Samuel y David? —preguntó.
―En Nayot de Ramá —alguien le respondió.
23 Saúl se dirigió entonces hacia allí, pero el Espíritu de Dios vino con poder también sobre él, y Saúl estuvo en trance profético por todo el camino, hasta llegar a Nayot de Ramá. 24 Luego se quitó la ropa y, desnudo y en el suelo, estuvo en trance en presencia de Samuel todo el día y toda la noche. De ahí viene el dicho: «¿Acaso también Saúl es uno de los profetas?»

19 Habló Saúl a Jonatán su hijo, y a todos sus siervos, para que matasen a David; pero Jonatán hijo de Saúl amaba a David en gran manera, 2 y dio aviso a David, diciendo: Saúl mi padre procura matarte; por tanto cuídate hasta la mañana, y estate en lugar oculto y escóndete. 3 Y yo saldré y estaré junto a mi padre en el campo donde estés; y hablaré de ti a mi padre, y te haré saber lo que haya. 4 Y Jonatán habló bien de David a Saúl su padre, y le dijo: No peque el rey contra su siervo David, porque ninguna cosa ha cometido contra ti, y porque sus obras han sido muy buenas para contigo; 5 pues él tomó su vida en su mano, y mató al filisteo, y Jehová dio gran salvación a todo Israel. Tú lo viste, y te alegraste; ¿por qué, pues, pecarás contra la sangre inocente, matando a David sin causa? 6 Y escuchó Saúl la voz de Jonatán, y juró Saúl: Vive Jehová, que no morirá. 7 Y llamó Jonatán a David, y le declaró todas estas palabras; y él mismo trajo a David a Saúl, y estuvo delante de él como antes.
8 Después hubo de nuevo guerra; y salió David y peleó contra los filisteos, y los hirió con gran estrago, y huyeron delante de él. 9 Y el espíritu malo de parte de Jehová vino sobre Saúl; y estando sentado en su casa tenía una lanza a mano, mientras David estaba tocando. 10 Y Saúl procuró enclavar a David con la lanza a la pared, pero él se apartó de delante de Saúl, el cual hirió con la lanza en la pared; y David huyó, y escapó aquella noche.
11 Saúl envió luego mensajeros a casa de David para que lo vigilasen, y lo matasen a la mañana.(A) Mas Mical su mujer avisó a David, diciendo: Si no salvas tu vida esta noche, mañana serás muerto. 12 Y descolgó Mical a David por una ventana; y él se fue y huyó, y escapó. 13 Tomó luego Mical una estatua, y la puso sobre la cama, y le acomodó por cabecera una almohada de pelo de cabra y la cubrió con la ropa. 14 Y cuando Saúl envió mensajeros para prender a David, ella respondió: Está enfermo. 15 Volvió Saúl a enviar mensajeros para que viesen a David, diciendo: Traédmelo en la cama para que lo mate. 16 Y cuando los mensajeros entraron, he aquí la estatua estaba en la cama, y una almohada de pelo de cabra a su cabecera. 17 Entonces Saúl dijo a Mical: ¿Por qué me has engañado así, y has dejado escapar a mi enemigo? Y Mical respondió a Saúl: Porque él me dijo: Déjame ir; si no, yo te mataré.
18 Huyó, pues, David, y escapó, y vino a Samuel en Ramá, y le dijo todo lo que Saúl había hecho con él. Y él y Samuel se fueron y moraron en Naiot. 19 Y fue dado aviso a Saúl, diciendo: He aquí que David está en Naiot en Ramá. 20 Entonces Saúl envió mensajeros para que trajeran a David, los cuales vieron una compañía de profetas que profetizaban, y a Samuel que estaba allí y los presidía. Y vino el Espíritu de Dios sobre los mensajeros de Saúl, y ellos también profetizaron. 21 Cuando lo supo Saúl, envió otros mensajeros, los cuales también profetizaron. Y Saúl volvió a enviar mensajeros por tercera vez, y ellos también profetizaron. 22 Entonces él mismo fue a Ramá; y llegando al gran pozo que está en Secú, preguntó diciendo: ¿Dónde están Samuel y David? Y uno respondió: He aquí están en Naiot en Ramá. 23 Y fue a Naiot en Ramá; y también vino sobre él el Espíritu de Dios, y siguió andando y profetizando hasta que llegó a Naiot en Ramá. 24 Y él también se despojó de sus vestidos, y profetizó igualmente delante de Samuel, y estuvo desnudo todo aquel día y toda aquella noche. Saul Tries to Kill David
19 Saul told his son Jonathan(A) and all the attendants to kill(B) David. But Jonathan had taken a great liking to David 2 and warned him, “My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding(C) and stay there. 3 I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak(D) to him about you and will tell you what I find out.”
4 Jonathan spoke(E) well of David to Saul his father and said to him, “Let not the king do wrong(F) to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly. 5 He took his life(G) in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory(H) for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent(I) man like David by killing him for no reason?”
6 Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”
7 So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.(J)
8 Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.
9 But an evil[a] spirit(K) from the Lord came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,(L) 10 Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded(M) him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made good his escape.
11 Saul sent men to David’s house to watch(N) it and to kill him in the morning.(O) But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, “If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed.” 12 So Michal let David down through a window,(P) and he fled and escaped. 13 Then Michal took an idol(Q) and laid it on the bed, covering it with a garment and putting some goats’ hair at the head.
14 When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said,(R) “He is ill.”
15 Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him.” 16 But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.
17 Saul said to Michal, “Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?”
Michal told him, “He said to me, ‘Let me get away. Why should I kill you?’”
18 When David had fled and made his escape, he went to Samuel at Ramah(S) and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there. 19 Word came to Saul: “David is in Naioth at Ramah”; 20 so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets(T) prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on(U) Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.(V) 21 Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied. 22 Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, “Where are Samuel and David?”
“Over in Naioth at Ramah,” they said.
23 So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying(W) until he came to Naioth. 24 He stripped(X) off his garments, and he too prophesied in Samuel’s(Y) presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”(Z)

2 But Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:
3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.
4 And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, and because his works have been to thee-ward very good:
5 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel: thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?
6 And Saul hearkened unto the voice of Jonathan: and Saul sware, As the Lord liveth, he shall not be slain.
7 And Jonathan called David, and Jonathan shewed him all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.
8 And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.
9 And the evil spirit from the Lord was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin in his hand: and David played with his hand.
10 And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall with the javelin: but he slipped away out of Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.
11 Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life to night, to morrow thou shalt be slain.
12 So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.
13 And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it with a cloth.
14 And when Saul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.
15 And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.
16 And when the messengers were come in, behold, there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster.
17 And Saul said unto Michal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?
18 So David fled, and escaped, and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth.
19 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold, David is at Naioth in Ramah.
20 And Saul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied.
21 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.
22 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel and David? And one said, Behold, they be at Naioth in Ramah.
23 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the Spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, until he came to Naioth in Ramah.

19 Now Saul spoke to Jonathan his son and to all his servants, that they should kill (A)David; but Jonathan, Saul’s son, (B)delighted greatly in David. 2 So Jonathan told David, saying, “My father Saul seeks to kill you. Therefore please be on your guard until morning, and stay in a secret place and hide. 3 And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, and I will speak with my father about you. Then what I observe, I will tell (C)you.”
4 Thus Jonathan (D)spoke well of David to Saul his father, and said to him, “Let not the king (E)sin against his servant, against David, because he has not sinned against you, and because his works have been very good toward you. 5 For he took his (F)life in his hands and (G)killed the Philistine, and (H)the Lord brought about a great deliverance for all Israel. You saw it and rejoiced. (I)Why then will you (J)sin against innocent blood, to kill David without a cause?”
6 So Saul heeded the voice of Jonathan, and Saul swore, “As the Lord lives, he shall not be killed.” 7 Then Jonathan called David, and Jonathan told him all these things. So Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence (K)as in times past.
8 And there was war again; and David went out and fought with the Philistines, (L)and struck them with a mighty blow, and they fled from him.
9 Now (M)the distressing spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing music with his hand. 10 Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away from Saul’s presence; and he drove the spear into the wall. So David fled and escaped that night.
11 (N)Saul also sent messengers to David’s house to watch him and to kill him in the morning. And Michal, David’s wife, told him, saying, “If you do not save your life tonight, tomorrow you will be killed.” 12 So Michal (O)let David down through a window. And he and Samuel went and stayed in Naioth. 19 Now it was told Saul, saying, “Take note, David is at Naioth in Ramah!” 20 Then (S)Saul sent messengers to take David. (T)And when they saw the group of prophets prophesying, and Samuel standing as leader over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul, and they also (U)prophesied. 21 And when Saul was told, he sent other messengers, and they prophesied likewise.
