15 When Saul saw that he had great success, he dreaded him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab—I give her to you as a wife. Only continue to be my son of valor and fight Adonai’s battles.” For Saul thought, “My hand needn’t be against him—let the hand of the Philistines be against him.”

15 Por eso Saúl tenía miedo de él, al ver cómo prosperaba. 16 Pero todos en Israel y Judá querían a David, porque él era quien los dirigía cuando salían a campaña y volvían.
17 Un día Saúl le dijo a David:
—Te voy a dar como esposa a Merab, mi hija mayor, con la condición de que me seas un guerrero valiente y pelees las batallas del Señor.
Saúl pensaba que no necesitaba matarlo él personalmente, sino que de ello se encargarían los filisteos.

15 When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns.(A)
17 Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter(B) Merab. I will give her to you in marriage;(C) only serve me bravely and fight the battles(D) of the Lord.” For Saul said to himself,(E) “I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!”
