Desafío de Goliat
17 Los filisteos reunieron sus ejércitos para la guerra(A), y se concentraron en Soco, que pertenece a Judá; y acamparon entre Soco(B) y Azeca(C), en Efes Damim[a](D). 2 Y Saúl y los hombres de Israel se reunieron y acamparon en el valle de Ela(E), y se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a los filisteos. 3 Los filisteos estaban a un lado del monte, e Israel estaba al otro lado del monte, y entre ellos, el valle.
4 Entonces de los ejércitos de los filisteos salió un campeón llamado Goliat(F), de Gat(G), cuya estatura era de 6 codos y un palmo (casi 3 metros). 5 Tenía un casco de bronce sobre la cabeza y llevaba puesta una cota de malla, y el peso de la cota era de 5,000 siclos (57 kilos) de bronce. 6 Tenía también grebas[b] de bronce en las piernas y una jabalina de bronce(H) colgada entre los hombros. 7 El asta de su lanza era como un rodillo de telar(I) y la punta de su lanza pesaba 600 siclos (6.84 kilos) de hierro; y su escudero iba delante de él(J).
8 Goliat se paró y gritó a las filas de Israel: «¿Para qué han salido a ponerse en orden de batalla? ¿Acaso no soy yo filisteo y ustedes siervos de Saúl(K)? Escojan un hombre y que venga contra[c] mí. 9 Si es capaz de pelear conmigo y matarme[d], entonces seremos sus siervos; pero si yo lo venzo y lo mato[e], entonces ustedes serán nuestros siervos y nos servirán(L)». 10 De nuevo el filisteo dijo: «Hoy desafío a las filas de Israel. Denme un hombre para que luchemos mano a mano[f](M)». 11 Cuando Saúl y todo Israel oyeron estas palabras del filisteo, se acobardaron y tuvieron gran temor.
12 David era hijo del[g] efrateo(N) de Belén de Judá(O), llamado Isaí, y este tenía ocho hijos(P). En los días de Saúl, Isaí ya era viejo, avanzado en años entre los hombres. 13 Los tres hijos mayores de Isaí habían ido con[h] Saúl a la guerra. Los nombres de los tres hijos que fueron a la guerra eran: Eliab, el primogénito, Abinadab, el segundo, y Sama, el tercero(Q). 14 David era el menor(R). Los tres mayores siguieron, pues, a Saúl, 15 pero David iba y venía de donde estaba Saúl(S) a Belén para apacentar el rebaño de su padre(T). 16 Durante cuarenta días el filisteo vino mañana y tarde, presentándose en desafío.
17 Y dijo Isaí a su hijo David: «Lleva ahora a tus hermanos un efa (22 litros) de grano tostado y estos diez panes(U), y corre al campamento a donde están tus hermanos. 18 Lleva también estos diez quesos[i] al capitán de los mil(V), y mira a ver cómo están[j] tus hermanos y trae noticias[k] de ellos(W). 19 Porque Saúl y tus hermanos y todos los hombres de Israel están en el valle de Ela, peleando contra los filisteos».
20 Y se levantó David muy de mañana, dejó el rebaño con un guarda, y tomando las provisiones, se fue como Isaí le había mandado. Llegó al perímetro del campamento(X) cuando el ejército salía en orden de batalla, lanzando el grito de guerra. 21 E Israel y los filisteos se pusieron en orden de batalla, ejército contra ejército. 22 Entonces David dejó su carga[l] al cuidado[m] del que guardaba el equipaje(Y) y corrió a la línea de combate y entró a saludar a[n] sus hermanos. 23 Mientras hablaba con ellos, el campeón, el filisteo de Gat llamado Goliat, subió de entre las filas de los filisteos y habló las mismas palabras(Z) de su desafío, y David las oyó. 24 Cuando todos los hombres de Israel vieron a Goliat, huyeron de él, y tenían gran temor. 25 Y los hombres de Israel decían: «¿Han visto a ese hombre que sube? Ciertamente sube para desafiar a Israel. El rey colmará[o] con grandes riquezas al que lo mate[p], le dará su hija(AA) y hará libre[q] en Israel a la casa de su padre».
26 Entonces David preguntó a los que estaban junto a él: «¿Qué harán por el hombre que mate a este filisteo y quite el oprobio de Israel(AB)? ¿Quién es este filisteo incircunciso(AC) para desafiar a los escuadrones(AD) del Dios viviente(AE)?». 27 Y el pueblo le respondió según aquella palabra: «Así se hará al hombre que lo mate(AF)».
28 Eliab, su hermano mayor, oyó cuando él hablaba con los hombres; y se encendió la ira de Eliab contra David, y le dijo(AG): «¿Para qué has descendido acá? ¿Con quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo conozco tu soberbia y la maldad de tu corazón, que has descendido para ver la batalla». 29 Pero David respondió: «¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? ¿No fue solo una pregunta[r]?». 30 Entonces se apartó de su lado hacia otro y preguntó lo mismo[s]; y el pueblo respondió lo mismo que antes[t](AH).
David acepta el reto
31 Cuando se supieron las palabras que David había hablado, se lo dijeron a[u] Saúl, y él lo hizo venir. 32 Y dijo David a Saúl: «No se desaliente el corazón de nadie a causa de él(AI); su siervo irá y peleará con este filisteo(AJ)». 33 Entonces Saúl dijo a David: «Tú no puedes ir contra este filisteo a pelear con él, porque tú eres un muchacho y él ha sido un guerrero desde su juventud(AK)». 34 Pero David respondió a Saúl: «Su siervo apacentaba las ovejas de su padre, y cuando un león o un oso venía y se llevaba un cordero del rebaño, 35 yo salía tras él, lo atacaba[v], y lo rescataba de su boca(AL); y cuando se levantaba contra mí, lo tomaba por la quijada, lo hería y lo mataba. 36 Su siervo ha matado[w] tanto al león como al oso; y este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha desafiado a los escuadrones del Dios viviente». 37 Y David añadió: «El Señor, que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, me librará de la mano de este filisteo(AM)». Y Saúl dijo a David: «Ve, y que el Señor sea contigo(AN)». 38 Saúl vistió a David con sus ropas militares, le puso un casco de bronce en la cabeza y lo cubrió con una armadura. 39 David se ciñó la espada sobre sus ropas militares y trató de caminar, pues no se las había probado antes. Entonces David dijo a Saúl: «No puedo caminar con esto, pues no tengo experiencia con[x] ellas». David se las quitó, 40 y tomando su cayado en la mano, escogió[y] del arroyo cinco piedras lisas y las puso en el saco de pastor que traía, en el zurrón, y con la honda en la mano se acercó al filisteo(AO).
Victoria de David y del pueblo
41 El filisteo vino, y se fue acercando a David, con su escudero delante de él. 42 Cuando el filisteo miró y vio a David, lo tuvo en poco(AP) porque era un muchacho, rubio[z] y bien parecido(AQ). 43 Y el filisteo dijo a David: «¿Acaso soy un perro, que vienes contra mí con palos(AR)?». Y el filisteo maldijo a David por sus dioses(AS). 44 También dijo el filisteo a David: «Ven a mí, y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo y a las fieras del campo(AT)». 45 Entonces dijo David al filisteo: «Tú vienes a mí con espada, lanza y jabalina, pero yo vengo a ti en el nombre del Señor de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel(AU), a quien tú has desafiado. 46 El Señor te entregará hoy en mis manos, y yo te derribaré y te cortaré la cabeza. Y daré hoy los cadáveres del ejército de los filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las fieras de la tierra(AV), para que toda la tierra sepa que hay Dios en Israel(AW), 47 y para que toda esta asamblea sepa que el Señor no libra ni con espada ni con lanza(AX); porque la batalla es del Señor y Él los entregará a ustedes en nuestras manos(AY)».
48 Sucedió que cuando el filisteo se levantó y se fue acercando para enfrentarse a David, este[aa] corrió rápidamente hacia el frente de batalla para enfrentarse al filisteo(AZ). 49 David metió la mano en su saco, sacó de él una piedra, la lanzó con la honda, e hirió al filisteo en la frente. La piedra se hundió en su frente y Goliat cayó a tierra sobre su rostro.
50 Así venció David al filisteo con una honda y una piedra, e hirió al filisteo y lo mató; pero no había espada en la mano de David. 51 Entonces David corrió y se puso sobre el filisteo, tomó su espada, la sacó de la vaina y lo mató, cortándole la cabeza con ella(BA). Cuando los filisteos vieron que su campeón estaba muerto, huyeron(BB). 52 Y levantándose los hombres de Israel y de Judá, gritaron y persiguieron a los filisteos hasta el[ab] valle y hasta las puertas de Ecrón(BC). Los filisteos muertos estaban tendidos[ac] a lo largo del camino a Saaraim(BD), aun hasta Gat y Ecrón. 53 Los israelitas regresaron de perseguir a los filisteos y saquearon sus campamentos. 54 Entonces David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la llevó a Jerusalén, pero puso sus armas en su tienda.
55 Cuando Saúl vio a David salir contra el filisteo, dijo a Abner, el comandante del ejército: «Abner, ¿de quién es hijo este joven(BE)?». Y Abner dijo: «Por su vida, oh rey, no sé». 56 Y el rey dijo: «Pregunta de quién es hijo el joven». 57 Cuando regresó David de matar[ad] al filisteo, Abner lo tomó y lo llevó ante Saúl, con la cabeza del filisteo en su mano(BF). 58 Y Saúl le dijo: «Joven, ¿de quién eres hijo?». Y David respondió: «Yo soy hijo de su siervo Isaí el de Belén(BG)».

17 Los filisteos juntaron sus ejércitos para la guerra, y se congregaron en Soco, que es de Judá, y acamparon entre Soco y Azeca, en Efes-damim. 2 También Saúl y los hombres de Israel se juntaron, y acamparon en el valle de Ela, y se pusieron en orden de batalla contra los filisteos. 3 Y los filisteos estaban sobre un monte a un lado, e Israel estaba sobre otro monte al otro lado, y el valle entre ellos. 4 Salió entonces del campamento de los filisteos un paladín, el cual se llamaba Goliat, de Gat, y tenía de altura seis codos y un palmo. 5 Y traía un casco de bronce en su cabeza, y llevaba una cota de malla; y era el peso de la cota cinco mil siclos de bronce. 6 Sobre sus piernas traía grebas de bronce, y jabalina de bronce entre sus hombros. 7 El asta de su lanza era como un rodillo de telar, y tenía el hierro de su lanza seiscientos siclos de hierro; e iba su escudero delante de él. 8 Y se paró y dio voces a los escuadrones de Israel, diciéndoles: ¿Para qué os habéis puesto en orden de batalla? ¿No soy yo el filisteo, y vosotros los siervos de Saúl? Escoged de entre vosotros un hombre que venga contra mí. 9 Si él pudiere pelear conmigo, y me venciere, nosotros seremos vuestros siervos; y si yo pudiere más que él, y lo venciere, vosotros seréis nuestros siervos y nos serviréis. 10 Y añadió el filisteo: Hoy yo he desafiado al campamento de Israel; dadme un hombre que pelee conmigo. 11 Oyendo Saúl y todo Israel estas palabras del filisteo, se turbaron y tuvieron gran miedo.
12 Y David era hijo de aquel hombre efrateo de Belén de Judá, cuyo nombre era Isaí, el cual tenía ocho hijos; y en el tiempo de Saúl este hombre era viejo y de gran edad entre los hombres. 13 Y los tres hijos mayores de Isaí habían ido para seguir a Saúl a la guerra. Y los nombres de sus tres hijos que habían ido a la guerra eran: Eliab el primogénito, el segundo Abinadab, y el tercero Sama; 14 y David era el menor. Siguieron, pues, los tres mayores a Saúl. 15 Pero David había ido y vuelto, dejando a Saúl, para apacentar las ovejas de su padre en Belén. 16 Venía, pues, aquel filisteo por la mañana y por la tarde, y así lo hizo durante cuarenta días.
17 Y dijo Isaí a David su hijo: Toma ahora para tus hermanos un efa de este grano tostado, y estos diez panes, y llévalo pronto al campamento a tus hermanos. 18 Y estos diez quesos de leche los llevarás al jefe de los mil; y mira si tus hermanos están buenos, y toma prendas de ellos.
19 Y Saúl y ellos y todos los de Israel estaban en el valle de Ela, peleando contra los filisteos. 20 Se levantó, pues, David de mañana, y dejando las ovejas al cuidado de un guarda, se fue con su carga como Isaí le había mandado; y llegó al campamento cuando el ejército salía en orden de batalla, y daba el grito de combate. 21 Y se pusieron en orden de batalla Israel y los filisteos, ejército frente a ejército. 22 Entonces David dejó su carga en mano del que guardaba el bagaje, y corrió al ejército; y cuando llegó, preguntó por sus hermanos, si estaban bien. 23 Mientras él hablaba con ellos, he aquí que aquel paladín que se ponía en medio de los dos campamentos, que se llamaba Goliat, el filisteo de Gat, salió de entre las filas de los filisteos y habló las mismas palabras, y las oyó David.
24 Y todos los varones de Israel que veían aquel hombre huían de su presencia, y tenían gran temor. 25 Y cada uno de los de Israel decía: ¿No habéis visto aquel hombre que ha salido? Él se adelanta para provocar a Israel. Al que le venciere, el rey le enriquecerá con grandes riquezas, y le dará su hija, y eximirá de tributos a la casa de su padre en Israel. 26 Entonces habló David a los que estaban junto a él, diciendo: ¿Qué harán al hombre que venciere a este filisteo, y quitare el oprobio de Israel? Porque ¿quién es este filisteo incircunciso, para que provoque a los escuadrones del Dios viviente? 27 Y el pueblo le respondió las mismas palabras, diciendo: Así se hará al hombre que le venciere.
28 Y oyéndole hablar Eliab su hermano mayor con aquellos hombres, se encendió en ira contra David y dijo: ¿Para qué has descendido acá? ¿y a quién has dejado aquellas pocas ovejas en el desierto? Yo conozco tu soberbia y la malicia de tu corazón, que para ver la batalla has venido. 29 David respondió: ¿Qué he hecho yo ahora? ¿No es esto mero hablar? 30 Y apartándose de él hacia otros, preguntó de igual manera; y le dio el pueblo la misma respuesta de antes.
31 Fueron oídas las palabras que David había dicho, y las refirieron delante de Saúl; y él lo hizo venir. 32 Y dijo David a Saúl: No desmaye el corazón de ninguno a causa de él; tu siervo irá y peleará contra este filisteo. 33 Dijo Saúl a David: No podrás tú ir contra aquel filisteo, para pelear con él; porque tú eres muchacho, y él un hombre de guerra desde su juventud. 34 David respondió a Saúl: Tu siervo era pastor de las ovejas de su padre; y cuando venía un león, o un oso, y tomaba algún cordero de la manada, 35 salía yo tras él, y lo hería, y lo libraba de su boca; y si se levantaba contra mí, yo le echaba mano de la quijada, y lo hería y lo mataba. 36 Fuese león, fuese oso, tu siervo lo mataba; y este filisteo incircunciso será como uno de ellos, porque ha provocado al ejército del Dios viviente. 37 Añadió David: Jehová, que me ha librado de las garras del león y de las garras del oso, él también me librará de la mano de este filisteo. Y dijo Saúl a David: Ve, y Jehová esté contigo. 38 Y Saúl vistió a David con sus ropas, y puso sobre su cabeza un casco de bronce, y le armó de coraza. 39 Y ciñó David su espada sobre sus vestidos, y probó a andar, porque nunca había hecho la prueba. Y dijo David a Saúl: Yo no puedo andar con esto, porque nunca lo practiqué. Y David echó de sí aquellas cosas. 40 Y tomó su cayado en su mano, y escogió cinco piedras lisas del arroyo, y las puso en el saco pastoril, en el zurrón que traía, y tomó su honda en su mano, y se fue hacia el filisteo.
41 Y el filisteo venía andando y acercándose a David, y su escudero delante de él. 42 Y cuando el filisteo miró y vio a David, le tuvo en poco; porque era muchacho, y rubio, y de hermoso parecer. 43 Y dijo el filisteo a David: ¿Soy yo perro, para que vengas a mí con palos? Y maldijo a David por sus dioses. 44 Dijo luego el filisteo a David: Ven a mí, y daré tu carne a las aves del cielo y a las bestias del campo. 45 Entonces dijo David al filisteo: Tú vienes a mí con espada y lanza y jabalina; mas yo vengo a ti en el nombre de Jehová de los ejércitos, el Dios de los escuadrones de Israel, a quien tú has provocado. 46 Jehová te entregará hoy en mi mano, y yo te venceré, y te cortaré la cabeza, y daré hoy los cuerpos de los filisteos a las aves del cielo y a las bestias de la tierra; y toda la tierra sabrá que hay Dios en Israel. 47 Y sabrá toda esta congregación que Jehová no salva con espada y con lanza; porque de Jehová es la batalla, y él os entregará en nuestras manos.
48 Y aconteció que cuando el filisteo se levantó y echó a andar para ir al encuentro de David, David se dio prisa, y corrió a la línea de batalla contra el filisteo. 49 Y metiendo David su mano en la bolsa, tomó de allí una piedra, y la tiró con la honda, e hirió al filisteo en la frente; y la piedra quedó clavada en la frente, y cayó sobre su rostro en tierra.
50 Así venció David al filisteo con honda y piedra; e hirió al filisteo y lo mató, sin tener David espada en su mano. 51 Entonces corrió David y se puso sobre el filisteo; y tomando la espada de él y sacándola de su vaina, lo acabó de matar, y le cortó con ella la cabeza. Y cuando los filisteos vieron a su paladín muerto, huyeron. 52 Levantándose luego los de Israel y los de Judá, gritaron, y siguieron a los filisteos hasta llegar al valle, y hasta las puertas de Ecrón. Y cayeron los heridos de los filisteos por el camino de Saaraim hasta Gat y Ecrón. 53 Y volvieron los hijos de Israel de seguir tras los filisteos, y saquearon su campamento. 54 Y David tomó la cabeza del filisteo y la trajo a Jerusalén, pero las armas de él las puso en su tienda.
55 Y cuando Saúl vio a David que salía a encontrarse con el filisteo, dijo a Abner general del ejército: Abner, ¿de quién es hijo ese joven? Y Abner respondió: 56 Vive tu alma, oh rey, que no lo sé. Y el rey dijo: Pregunta de quién es hijo ese joven. 57 Y cuando David volvía de matar al filisteo, Abner lo tomó y lo llevó delante de Saúl, teniendo David la cabeza del filisteo en su mano. 58 Y le dijo Saúl: Muchacho, ¿de quién eres hijo? Y David respondió: Yo soy hijo de tu siervo Isaí de Belén.

17 Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled(A) at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh(B) and Azekah.(C) 2 Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah(D) and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines. 3 The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.
4 A champion named Goliath,(E) who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.[a] 5 He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armor of bronze weighing five thousand shekels[b]; 6 on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin(F) was slung on his back. 7 His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod,(G) and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels.[c] His shield bearer(H) went ahead of him.
8 Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose(I) a man and have him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us.” 10 Then the Philistine said, “This day I defy(J) the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other.(K)” 11 On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.
12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite(L) named Jesse,(M) who was from Bethlehem(N) in Judah. Jesse had eight(O) sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old. 13 Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab;(P) the second, Abinadab;(Q) and the third, Shammah.(R) 14 David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to tend(S) his father’s sheep(T) at Bethlehem.
16 For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.
17 Now Jesse said to his son David, “Take this ephah[d](U) of roasted grain(V) and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp. 18 Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers(W) are and bring back some assurance[e] from them. 19 They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines.”
20 Early in the morning David left the flock in the care of a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry. 21 Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other. 22 David left his things with the keeper of supplies,(X) ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were. 23 As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual(Y) defiance, and David heard it. 24 Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.
25 Now the Israelites had been saying, “Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter(Z) in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes(AA) in Israel.”
26 David asked the men standing near him, “What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace(AB) from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised(AC) Philistine that he should defy(AD) the armies of the living(AE) God?”
27 They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, “This is what will be done for the man who kills him.”
28 When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger(AF) at him and asked, “Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.”
29 “Now what have I done?” said David. “Can’t I even speak?” 30 He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before. 31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.
32 David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart(AG) on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”
33 Saul replied,(AH) “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion(AI) or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized(AJ) it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion(AK) and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued(AL) me from the paw of the lion(AM) and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with(AN) you.”
38 Then Saul dressed David in his own(AO) tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.
“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.
41 Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer(AP) in front of him, kept coming closer to David. 42 He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome,(AQ) and he despised(AR) him. 43 He said to David, “Am I a dog,(AS) that you come at me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 “Come here,” he said, “and I’ll give your flesh to the birds(AT) and the wild animals!(AU)”
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,(AV) but I come against you in the name(AW) of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.(AX) 46 This day the Lord will deliver(AY) you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses(AZ) of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world(BA) will know that there is a God in Israel.(BB) 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword(BC) or spear that the Lord saves;(BD) for the battle(BE) is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”
48 As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. 49 Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.
50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling(BF) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.
51 David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut(BG) off his head with the sword.(BH)
When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath[f] and to the gates of Ekron.(BI) Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim(BJ) road to Gath and Ekron. 53 When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.
54 David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.
55 As Saul watched David(BK) going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, “Abner,(BL) whose son is that young man?”
Abner replied, “As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know.”
56 The king said, “Find out whose son this young man is.”
57 As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head.
58 “Whose son are you, young man?” Saul asked him.
David said, “I am the son of your servant Jesse(BM) of Bethlehem.”

17 Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.
2 And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.
3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.
4 And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.
5 And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.
6 And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.
7 And the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam; and his spear's head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.
8 And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.
9 If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.
10 And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
11 When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
12 Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.
13 And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.
14 And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.
15 But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.
16 And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.
17 And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn, and these ten loaves, and run to the camp of thy brethren;
18 And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.
19 Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.
20 And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.
21 For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.
22 And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.
23 And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them.
24 And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
25 And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father's house free in Israel.
26 And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
27 And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.
28 And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?
30 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.
31 And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
41 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.
46 This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give you into our hands.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
52 And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.
53 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.
54 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.
55 And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
56 And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is.
57 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.
58 And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
