⁴⁵ David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin,^(A) but I come against you in the name^(B) of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.^{(C) 46} This day the Lord will deliver^(D) you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses^(E) of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world^(F) will know that there is a God in Israel.^{(G) 47} All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword^(H) or spear that the Lord saves;^(I) for the battle^(J) is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

⁴⁸ As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him. ⁴⁹ Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell facedown on the ground.

⁵⁰ So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling^(K) and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

⁵¹ David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut^(L) off his head with the sword.^(M)

When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. ⁵² Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath^[a] and to the gates of Ekron.^(N) Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim^(O) road to Gath and Ekron. ⁵³ When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.

⁵⁴ David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.

²⁷ David took his men with him and went out and killed two hundred Philistines and brought back their foreskins. They counted out the full number to the king so that David might become the king’s son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal^(A) in marriage.

David Among the Philistines

27 But David thought to himself, “One of these days I will be destroyed by the hand of Saul. The best thing I can do is to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me anywhere in Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”

² So David and the six hundred men^(A) with him left and went^(B) over to Achish^(C) son of Maok king of Gath. ³ David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives:^(D) Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal. ⁴ When Saul was told that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

⁵ Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let a place be assigned to me in one of the country towns, that I may live there. Why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

⁶ So on that day Achish gave him Ziklag,^(E) and it has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since. ⁷ David lived^(F) in Philistine territory a year and four months.

⁸ Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites,^(G) the Girzites and the Amalekites.^(H) (From ancient times these peoples had lived in the land extending to Shur^(I) and Egypt.) ⁹ Whenever David attacked an area, he did not leave a man or woman alive,^(J) but took sheep and cattle, donkeys and camels, and clothes. Then he returned to Achish.

¹⁰ When Achish asked, “Where did you go raiding today?” David would say, “Against the Negev of Judah” or “Against the Negev of Jerahmeel^(K)” or “Against the Negev of the Kenites.^(L)” ¹¹ He did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to Gath, for he thought, “They might inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.’” And such was his practice as long as he lived in Philistine territory. ¹² Achish trusted David and said to himself, “He has become so obnoxious^(M) to his people, the Israelites, that he will be my servant for life.^(N)”
