Samuel consagra a David
16 El SEÑOR le dijo a Samuel:
—¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar triste por Saúl? Estás triste por él a pesar de que te dije que yo me negaba a dejarlo ser el rey de Israel. Llena tu cuerno[a] de aceite y ve a Belén a ver a un hombre llamado Isaí, pues he elegido a uno de sus hijos para ser el nuevo rey.
2 Pero Samuel dijo:
—Si voy, Saúl se enterará y tratará de matarme.
El SEÑOR le dijo:
—Ve a Belén. Lleva una ternera y di que vas a ofrecer un sacrificio al SEÑOR. 3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y yo te diré qué hacer. Ungirás a quien yo te indique.
4 Samuel hizo lo que le mandó el SEÑOR, pero al llegar a Belén los ancianos líderes se asustaron y le preguntaron:
—¿Pasa algo, vidente?
5 Samuel contestó:
—No pasa nada, sólo vengo a ofrecerle un sacrificio al SEÑOR. Purifíquense y vengan conmigo al sacrificio.
Samuel purificó a Isaí y a sus hijos y los invitó a reunirse con él para el sacrificio. 6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel se fijó en Eliab y pensó: «De seguro que este es quien el SEÑOR ha elegido».
7 Pero el SEÑOR le dijo a Samuel:
—Eliab es alto y apuesto, pero no te fijes en eso. Dios no se fija en las cualidades que la gente ve. La gente sólo presta atención al aspecto de las personas, pero el SEÑOR ve su corazón. Eliab no es el hombre que he elegido.
8 Entonces Isaí llamó a Abinadab, su segundo hijo, y este se acercó a Samuel, pero Samuel dijo:
—Tampoco este es el elegido del SEÑOR.
9 Isaí le presentó a Sama, pero Samuel dijo de nuevo:
—Este tampoco es el elegido del SEÑOR.
10 Isaí le presentó siete de sus hijos a Samuel, pero este dijo:
—Ninguno de ellos es el elegido del SEÑOR.
11 Entonces Samuel le preguntó a Isaí:
—¿No tienes más hijos?
Isaí contestó:
—Sí, tengo otro hijo, el menor, pero está cuidando el rebaño.
Samuel dijo:
—Manda a traerlo. No empezaremos a comer hasta que él llegue.
12 Isaí mandó que lo fueran a buscar. Su hijo menor era un joven de buen parecer, saludable[b] y apuesto. El SEÑOR le dijo a Samuel:
—Este es mi elegido, levántate y úngelo.
13 Samuel tomó el cuerno de aceite y derramó el aceite sobre el hijo menor de Isaí, frente a sus hermanos. El Espíritu del SEÑOR vino con poder sobre David y desde ese día estuvo con él. Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá.
Un espíritu malo atormenta a Saúl
14 El espíritu del SEÑOR abandonó a Saúl y el SEÑOR le envió un espíritu maligno que le causó muchos problemas. 15 Los siervos de Saúl le dijeron:
—Como usted sabe, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios lo está molestando. 16 Así que si usted lo ordena, podemos buscar a un músico para que toque para usted cuando el espíritu malo que Dios manda le provoque ansiedad, y así usted se sentirá mejor.
17 Así que Saúl les dijo a los siervos:
—Busquen a un buen músico y tráiganmelo.
18 Uno de los siervos dijo:
—El hijo de Isaí, de Belén, sabe tocar el arpa. Es un guerrero valiente, listo y de buen parecer. Además, el SEÑOR está con él.
19 Así que Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí para decirle:
—Envíame a tu hijo David, el que cuida el rebaño.
20 Isaí tomó un asno, pan, un cuero de vino y un cabrito, y se los envió a Saúl como regalo por medio de David. 21 David se presentó ante Saúl, quien lo llegó a apreciar mucho y lo hizo su escudero. 22 Saúl le envió a decir a Isaí: «David me ha causado muy buena impresión, deja que se quede a mi servicio». 23 Así, cada vez que el espíritu maligno de parte de Dios molestaba a Saúl, David tocaba el arpa. El espíritu se iba, y Saúl se sentía mejor.

16 Dijo Jehová a Samuel: ¿Hasta cuándo llorarás a Saúl, habiéndolo yo desechado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite, y ven, te enviaré a Isaí de Belén, porque de sus hijos me he provisto de rey. 2 Y dijo Samuel: ¿Cómo iré? Si Saúl lo supiera, me mataría. Jehová respondió: Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido. 3 Y llama a Isaí al sacrificio, y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; y me ungirás al que yo te dijere. 4 Hizo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová; y luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirle con miedo, y dijeron: ¿Es pacífica tu venida? 5 Él respondió: Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos, y venid conmigo al sacrificio. Y santificando él a Isaí y a sus hijos, los llamó al sacrificio.
6 Y aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, él vio a Eliab, y dijo: De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido. 7 Y Jehová respondió a Samuel: No mires a su parecer, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre; pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón. 8 Entonces llamó Isaí a Abinadab, y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: Tampoco a este ha escogido Jehová. 9 Hizo luego pasar Isaí a Sama. Y él dijo: Tampoco a este ha elegido Jehová. 10 E hizo pasar Isaí siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isaí: Jehová no ha elegido a estos. 11 Entonces dijo Samuel a Isaí: ¿Son estos todos tus hijos? Y él respondió: Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Isaí: Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí. 12 Envió, pues, por él, y le hizo entrar; y era rubio, hermoso de ojos, y de buen parecer. Entonces Jehová dijo: Levántate y úngelo, porque este es. 13 Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre David. Se levantó luego Samuel, y se volvió a Ramá.
David toca para Saúl
14 El Espíritu de Jehová se apartó de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová. 15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: He aquí ahora, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta. 16 Diga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él toque con su mano, y tengas alivio. 17 Y Saúl respondió a sus criados: Buscadme, pues, ahora alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo. 18 Entonces uno de los criados respondió diciendo: He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Isaí de Belén, que sabe tocar, y es valiente y vigoroso y hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, y hermoso, y Jehová está con él. 19 Y Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí, diciendo: Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas. 20 Y tomó Isaí un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David su hijo. 21 Y viniendo David a Saúl, estuvo delante de él; y él le amó mucho, y le hizo su paje de armas. 22 Y Saúl envió a decir a Isaí: Yo te ruego que esté David conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia en mis ojos. 23 Y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y tocaba con su mano; y Saúl tenía alivio y estaba mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn(A) for Saul, since I have rejected(B) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil(C) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse(D) of Bethlehem. I have chosen(E) one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show(F) you what to do. You are to anoint(G) for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem,(H) the elders of the town trembled(I) when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?(J)”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(K) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(L) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(M) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(N)
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab(O) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah(P) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(Q) the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(R)
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he(S) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(T) features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(U) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(V) came powerfully upon David.(W) Samuel then went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed(X) from Saul, and an evil[a] spirit(Y) from the Lord tormented him.(Z)
15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre.(AA) He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse(AB) of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior.(AC) He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with(AD) him.”
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.(AE)” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread,(AF) a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul and entered his service.(AG) Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit(AH) would leave him.
