16 El Señor dijo a Samuel:
—¿Cuánto tiempo vas a quedarte llorando por Saúl, si ya lo he rechazado como rey de Israel? Mejor llena de aceite tu cuerno y ponte en camino. Voy a enviarte a Belén, a la casa de Isaí, pues he escogido como rey a uno de sus hijos.
2 —¿Y cómo voy a ir? —respondió Samuel—. Si Saúl llega a enterarse, me matará.
—Lleva una ternera —dijo el Señor—, y diles que vas a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. 3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y entonces te explicaré lo que debes hacer, pues ungirás para mi servicio a quien yo te diga.
4 Samuel hizo lo que el Señor mandó. Pero cuando llegó a Belén, los jefes del pueblo lo recibieron con mucho temor.
—¿Vienes en son de paz? —preguntaron.
5 —Claro que sí. He venido a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. Conságrense y vengan conmigo para tomar parte en él.
Entonces Samuel consagró a Isaí y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio.
6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel se fijó en Eliab y pensó: «Sin duda que este es el ungido del Señor». 7 Pero el Señor dijo a Samuel:
—No te dejes impresionar por su apariencia ni por su estatura, pues yo lo he rechazado. La gente se fija en las apariencias, pero yo me fijo en el corazón.
8 Entonces Isaí llamó a Abinadab para presentárselo a Samuel, pero Samuel dijo:
—A este no lo ha escogido el Señor.
9 Luego le presentó a Sama y Samuel repitió:
—Tampoco a este lo ha escogido el Señor.
10 Isaí le presentó a siete de sus hijos, pero Samuel dijo:
—El Señor no ha escogido a ninguno de ellos. 11 ¿Son estos todos tus hijos?
—Queda el más pequeño —respondió Isaí—, pero está cuidando el rebaño.
—Manda a buscarlo —insistió Samuel—, que no podemos continuar hasta que él llegue.
12 Isaí mandó a buscarlo y se lo trajeron. Era buen mozo, pelirrojo y de buena presencia. El Señor dijo a Samuel:
—Este es; levántate y úngelo.
13 Samuel tomó el cuerno de aceite y ungió al joven en presencia de sus hermanos. Entonces el Espíritu del Señor vino con poder sobre David, y desde ese día estuvo con él. Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá.
David al servicio de Saúl
14 El Espíritu del Señor se apartó de Saúl y en su lugar el Señor envió un espíritu maligno para que lo atormentara. 15 Sus servidores dijeron:
—Como usted se dará cuenta, un espíritu maligno de parte de Dios lo está atormentando. 16 Así que ordene usted a estos siervos suyos que busquen a alguien que sepa tocar el arpa. Así, cuando lo ataque el espíritu maligno de parte de Dios, el músico tocará y usted se sentirá mejor.
17 —Bien —respondió Saúl—, consíganme un buen músico y tráiganlo.
18 Uno de los cortesanos sugirió:
—Conozco a un muchacho que sabe tocar el arpa. Es valiente, hábil guerrero, sabe expresarse y es de buena presencia. Además, el Señor está con él. Su padre es Isaí, el de Belén.
19 Entonces Saúl envió unos mensajeros a Isaí para decirle: «Mándame a tu hijo David, el que cuida del rebaño». 20 Isaí tomó un asno, alimento, un odre de vino y un cabrito, y se los envió a Saúl por medio de su hijo David.
21 Cuando David llegó, se puso al servicio de Saúl, quien lo llegó a apreciar mucho y lo hizo su escudero. 22 Luego Saúl mandó este mensaje a Isaí: «Permite que David se quede a mi servicio, pues me ha causado muy buena impresión».
23 Cada vez que el espíritu de parte de Dios atormentaba a Saúl, David tomaba su arpa y tocaba. La música calmaba a Saúl, lo hacía sentirse mejor y el espíritu maligno se apartaba de él.

16 Dijo Jehová a Samuel:
—¿Hasta cuándo llorarás por Saúl, habiéndolo yo rechazado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite y ven, te enviaré a Isaí de Belén, porque de entre sus hijos me he elegido un rey.
2 Samuel preguntó:
—¿Cómo iré? Si Saúl lo supiera, me mataría.
Jehová respondió:
—Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: “A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido.” 3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; me ungirás al que yo te diga.
4 Hizo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová. Luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirlo con miedo, y le preguntaron:
—¿Es pacífica tu venida?
5 —Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos y venid conmigo al sacrificio —respondió él.
Luego santificó él a Isaí y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio. 6 Aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, vio él a Eliab, y se dijo: «De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido.»
7 Pero Jehová respondió a Samuel:
—No mires a su parecer, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre, pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón.
8 Entonces llamó Isaí a Abinadab y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo:
—Tampoco a éste ha escogido Jehová.
9 Hizo luego pasar Isaí a Sama. Pero Samuel dijo:
—Tampoco a éste ha elegido Jehová.
10 Hizo luego pasar Isaí siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isaí:
—Jehová no ha elegido a estos.
11 Entonces dijo Samuel a Isaí:
—¿Son estos todos tus hijos?
Isaí respondió:
—Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas.
Y dijo Samuel a Isaí:
—Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.
12 Envió, pues, por él, y lo hizo entrar. Era rubio, de hermosos ojos y de buen parecer. Entonces Jehová dijo:
«Levántate y úngelo, porque éste es.»
13 Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos. A partir de aquel día vino sobre David el espíritu de Jehová. Se levantó luego Samuel y regresó a Ramá.
David entra al servicio de Saúl
14 El espíritu de Jehová se apartó de Saúl, y un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová lo atormentaba. 15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron:
—Mira, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta. 16 Diga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están en tu presencia, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, toque con su mano y tengas alivio.
17 Saúl respondió a sus criados:
—Buscadme ahora, pues, a alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo.
18 Entonces uno de los criados respondió:
—He visto a un hijo de Isaí de Belén que sabe tocar; es valiente y vigoroso, hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, hermoso, y Jehová está con él.
19 Entonces Saúl envió mensajeros a Isaí, diciendo: «Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.» 20 Y tomó Isaí un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David, su hijo. 21 David se presentó ante Saúl y se puso a su servicio. Saúl lo amó mucho y lo hizo su paje de armas. 22 Luego mandó a decir a Isaí: «Te ruego que David se quede conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia a mis ojos.» 23 Así, cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y la tocaba. Saúl se aliviaba y se sentía mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

David es elegido rey
16 Dios le dijo a Samuel:
—¿Hasta cuándo vas a estar triste por Saúl? Yo lo he rechazado, así que ya no será rey. Mejor ve a Belén, donde vive Jesé. Ya he elegido a uno de sus hijos para que sea rey de Israel. Lleva aceite contigo y derrámaselo en la cabeza como símbolo de mi elección.
2 Pero Samuel le dijo:
—Dios mío, si Saúl llega a saberlo, me va a matar. ¿Cómo se lo voy a ocultar?
Dios le dijo:
—Llévate una vaquita y dile que vas a presentarme una ofrenda. 3 Pídele a Jesé que te acompañe. Cuando yo te diga a cuál de sus hijos he elegido como rey, tú le pondrás aceite en la cabeza.
4 Y Samuel obedeció a Dios. Cuando llegó a Belén, los líderes del pueblo se preocuparon mucho y le dijeron:
—¿A qué has venido? ¿Hay algún problema?
5 Samuel les contestó:
—Todo está bien. No pasa nada. Sólo vine a presentarle a Dios esta ofrenda. Prepárense y vengan conmigo al culto.
Samuel mismo preparó a Jesé y a sus hijos para que pudieran acompañarlo en el culto.
6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel vio a Eliab y pensó: «Estoy seguro de que Dios ha elegido a este joven».
7 Pero Dios le dijo: «Samuel, no te fijes en su apariencia ni en su gran estatura. Éste no es mi elegido. Yo no me fijo en las apariencias; yo me fijo en el corazón».
8 Jesé llamó entonces a Abinadab, y se lo presentó a Samuel. Pero Samuel le dijo: «Tampoco a éste lo ha elegido Dios».
9 Luego Jesé llamó a Samá, pero Samuel le dijo: «Tampoco a éste lo ha elegido Dios».
10 Jesé le presentó a Samuel siete hijos suyos, pero Samuel le dijo que ninguno de ellos era el elegido de Dios. 11 Finalmente, le preguntó a Jesé:
—¿Ya no tienes más hijos?
Y Jesé le contestó:
—Tengo otro, que es el más joven. Está cuidando las ovejas.
Samuel le dijo:
—Manda a llamarlo, pues no podemos continuar hasta que él venga.
12 Jesé hizo llamar a David, que era un joven de piel morena, ojos brillantes y muy bien parecido. Entonces Dios le dijo a Samuel: «Levántate y échale aceite en la cabeza, porque él es mi elegido».
13 Samuel tomó aceite y lo derramó sobre David, en presencia de sus hermanos. Después de eso, regresó a Ramá. En cuanto a David, desde ese día el espíritu de Dios lo llenó de poder.
David sirve a Saúl
14 Al mismo tiempo, el espíritu de Dios abandonó a Saúl, y un mal espíritu que Dios le envió comenzó a atormentarlo. 15 Un día, uno de los sirvientes de Saúl le dijo:
«Dios ha enviado sobre Su Majestad un espíritu malo, y le está haciendo mucho daño. 16 Mande usted a buscar a alguien que sepa tocar el arpa. Así, cuando venga ese mal espíritu, el músico tocará y usted se sentirá mejor».
17 Saúl le ordenó a sus sirvientes:
—Busquen a alguien que toque bien el arpa, y tráiganmelo.
18 Uno de ellos le dijo:
—Yo conozco a uno. Se llama David, y es hijo de Jesé, el que vive en Belén. David toca muy bien el arpa, y es también un guerrero muy valiente; además, sabe hablar bien y es muy bien parecido. ¡Y Dios siempre lo ayuda!
19 Entonces Saúl le envió a Jesé este mensaje: «Envíame a tu hijo David, el que cuida las ovejas».
20 Jesé envió a su hijo David, y aprovechó la ocasión para enviarle a Saúl, como regalo, un burro cargado con pan, un recipiente de cuero lleno de vino, y un cabrito.
21 David llegó al palacio y se puso al servicio de Saúl. Y tanto le agradó David a Saúl que lo tomó como uno de sus ayudantes.
Siempre que el espíritu malo atacaba a Saúl, David tocaba el arpa; entonces el espíritu malo se alejaba y Saúl se sentía aliviado.
22-23 Por eso Saúl le mandó a decir a Jesé: «Estoy muy contento con tu hijo. Déjalo que se quede conmigo, para que sea mi ayudante».

16 And the Lord said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed is before him.
7 But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.
15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.
16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17 And Saul said unto his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18 Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him.
19 Wherefore Saul sent messengers unto Jesse, and said, Send me David thy son, which is with the sheep.
20 And Jesse took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son unto Saul.
21 And David came to Saul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer.
22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he hath found favour in my sight.
23 And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Samuel Anoints David
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn(A) for Saul, since I have rejected(B) him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil(C) and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse(D) of Bethlehem. I have chosen(E) one of his sons to be king.”
2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show(F) you what to do. You are to anoint(G) for me the one I indicate.”
4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem,(H) the elders of the town trembled(I) when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?(J)”
5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate(K) yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(L) and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance,(M) but the Lord looks at the heart.”(N)
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab(O) and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah(P) pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all(Q) the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”(R)
Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”
12 So he(S) sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome(T) features.
Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”
13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed(U) him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord(V) came powerfully upon David.(W) Samuel then went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had departed(X) from Saul, and an evil[a] spirit(Y) from the Lord tormented him.(Z)
15 Saul’s attendants said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord command his servants here to search for someone who can play the lyre.(AA) He will play when the evil spirit from God comes on you, and you will feel better.”
17 So Saul said to his attendants, “Find someone who plays well and bring him to me.”
18 One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of Jesse(AB) of Bethlehem who knows how to play the lyre. He is a brave man and a warrior.(AC) He speaks well and is a fine-looking man. And the Lord is with(AD) him.”
19 Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.(AE)” 20 So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread,(AF) a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul and entered his service.(AG) Saul liked him very much, and David became one of his armor-bearers. 22 Then Saul sent word to Jesse, saying, “Allow David to remain in my service, for I am pleased with him.”
23 Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit(AH) would leave him.
