Samuel Anoints David as King
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from ruling over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for Myself from among his sons.”
2 Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you will do. And you will anoint for Me him whom I tell to you.”
4 Samuel did that which the Lord spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come in peace?”
5 And he said, “I have come in peace to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab, and said, “Surely the anointed of the Lord is before Him.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees. For man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all your young men?”
And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is shepherding the flock.”
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and a good appearance.
And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
David Serves Saul
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord terrified him.
15 So the servants of Saul said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God troubles you. 16 Let our lord now tell your servants, who are before you, that they might seek out a man experienced in playing the lyre. And it will come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he will play with his hand, and you will be well.”
17 Saul said to his servants, “Find me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.”
18 Then one from the servants answered, and said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is experienced in playing music, a mighty man of valor, a man of battle, and skillful in words, even a man of fine appearance. And the Lord is with him.”
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” 20 Jesse took a donkey laden with bread, a bottle of wine, and a young goat and he sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul, and stood before him. And Saul loved him greatly and he became his armor bearer. 22 Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
23 It happened that when the evil spirit from God came on Saul, David would take the lyre in his hand and play. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

16 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 사울을 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕으로 여기지 않고 버렸는데, 너는 언제까지 사울을 위하여 슬퍼하려느냐? 너는 뿔병[a]에다 기름을 채워 가지고 베들레헴으로 가거라. 내가 너를 그곳에 사는 이새라는 사람에게 보내려고 한다. 내가 그의 아들 가운데 하나를 왕이 될 사람으로 택하였다.”
2 사무엘이 말하였다. “제가 어떻게 갈 수 있겠습니까? 사울이 이 소식을 들으면 저를 죽일 것입니다.”
주께서 말씀하셨다. “베들레헴으로 갈 때에 암송아지 한 마리를 끌고 가서 ‘주께 제사를 드리러 왔다.’고 말하여라. 3 이새를 제사에 초대하여라. 그러면 네가 해야 할 일을 내가 가르쳐 보여 주겠다. 너는 내가 가리키는 사람에게 기름을 부어라.”
4 사무엘은 주께서 말씀하신 대로 하였다. 사무엘이 베들레헴에 이르자 그 성읍의 장로들이 사무엘을 맞으며 “좋은 일로 오시는지요?” 하고 두려움에 떨며 물었다.
5 사무엘이 대답하였다. “예, 좋은 일로 왔소. 나는 주께 제사를 드리러 왔소. 여러분의 몸을 깨끗하게 한 뒤에 나와 함께 제사를 드리러 갑시다.” 그런 다음 사무엘은 이새와 그의 아들들을 깨끗하게 하였다. 그리고 그들을 제사에 초대하였다.
6 이새와 그의 아들들이 도착하였을 때, 사무엘은 엘리압을 보고 “주께서 택하신 사람이 여기 주님 앞에 서 있구나.” 하고 생각하였다.
7 그러나 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “그의 외모와 큰 키만 보고 판단하지 말아라. 나는 그를 택하지 않았다. 나는 사람이 보는 것들을 보지 않는다. 사람은 겉모습을 보지만, 나는 그 사람의 마음을 본다.”
8 다음으로 이새가 아비나답을 불러 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하였다. 그러나 사무엘은 “이 사람도 주께서 택하신 사람이 아니오.” 하고 말하였다.
9 그러자 이새가 심마를 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하였다. 그러나 사무엘은 “주께서는 이 사람도 택하지 않으셨소.” 하고 말하였다.
10 이새는 그의 일곱 아들을 불러 모두 사무엘 앞으로 지나가게 하였다. 그러나 사무엘은 이새에게 “주께서는 이들을 택하지 않으셨소.” 하고 말하였다.
11 사무엘이 이새에게 “당신의 아들은 이들이 전부입니까?”하고 물었다.
이새가 대답하였다. “아직 막내가 남아 있기는 하지만, 지금 양을 치러 들에 나가 있습니다.”
사무엘이 말하였다. “사람을 보내 그를 데려오시오. 우리는 그가 도착할 때까지 상에 앉지 않겠소.”
12 그리하여 이새가 사람을 보내 막내아들을 데려왔다. 그는 햇볕에 그을린 피부와 아름다운 눈을 가진 잘 생긴 젊은이였다.
그때에 주께서 사무엘에게 말씀하셨다. “바로 이 사람이다. 일어나 그에게 기름을 부어라.”
13 사무엘이 기름이 담긴 뿔병을 가져다가 형들이 보는 앞에서 이새의 막내아들에게 기름을 부었다. 그러자 그날부터 주의 영이 크신 능력으로 줄곧 다윗 위에 머물렀다. 그런 다음 사무엘은 라마로 돌아갔다.
악한 영이 사울을 괴롭히다
14 주의 영이 사울에게서 떠나고 주께서 보내신 악한 영이 그를 괴롭혔다. 15 그러자 사울의 신하들이 그에게 말하였다. “하나님께서 보내신 악한 영이 임금님을 괴롭히고 있습니다. 16 임금님께서 종들에게 명하시어 수금을 잘 타는 사람을 구해 오도록 하십시오. 하나님께서 보내신 악한 영이 임금님께 내릴 때마다 그가 임금님을 위하여 수금을 타면 임금님의 기분이 한결 나아지실 것입니다.”
17 그 말을 듣고 사울이 신하들에게 말하였다. “수금을 잘 타는 사람을 찾아서 내게 데려오너라.”
18 신하 가운데 한 사람이 말하였다. “제가 베들레헴에 사는 이새라는 사람의 아들을 본 적이 있습니다. 그가 수금을 아주 잘 탑니다. 그는 아주 용맹스러워 싸움도 잘 합니다. 뿐만 아니라 똑똑하고 잘 생긴데다 하나님께서 함께하시는 사람입니다.”
19 그리하여 사울은 이새에게 전령을 보내 이렇게 전하게 하였다. “양을 치고 있는 그대의 아들 다윗을 내게 보내 주시오.”
20 이새는 아들 다윗을 보내면서 빵과 포도주 한 부대와 염소 새끼 한 마리를 나귀에 실어 사울에게 선물로 보냈다. 21 다윗이 사울에게 가서 그를 섬기게 되었다. 사울이 다윗을 매우 사랑하여 다윗을 자기의 무기당번으로 삼았다. 22 그런 다음 사울이 이새에게 “다윗이 내 마음에 드니 이곳에 머물며 나에게 시중들도록 허락하시오.”라는 전갈을 보냈다.
23 하나님께서 보내신 악한 영이 사울에게 내릴 때마다 다윗은 수금을 들고 연주하였다. 그러면 악령이 사울을 떠나고 그는 기분이 한결 좋아졌다.
