16 Dijo Jehová a Samuel: ¿Hasta cuándo llorarás a Saúl, habiéndolo yo desechado para que no reine sobre Israel? Llena tu cuerno de aceite, y ven, te enviaré a Isay de Belén, porque de entre sus hijos me he provisto de rey.
2 Y dijo Samuel: ¿Cómo voy a ir? Si se entera Saúl, me matará. Jehová respondió: Toma contigo una becerra de la vacada, y di: A ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová he venido.
3 Y llama a Isay al sacrificio, y yo te enseñaré lo que has de hacer; y me ungirás al que yo te diga.
4 Hizo, pues, Samuel como le dijo Jehová; y luego que él llegó a Belén, los ancianos de la ciudad salieron a recibirle con miedo, y dijeron: ¿Es pacífica tu venida?
5 Él respondió: Sí, vengo a ofrecer sacrificio a Jehová; santificaos, y venid conmigo al sacrificio. Y santificando él a Isay y a sus hijos, los invitó al sacrificio.
6 Y aconteció que cuando ellos vinieron, él vio a Eliab, y dijo: De cierto delante de Jehová está su ungido.
7 Y Jehová respondió a Samuel: No mires a su aspecto, ni a lo grande de su estatura, porque yo lo desecho; porque Jehová no mira lo que mira el hombre; pues el hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos, pero Jehová mira el corazón.
8 Entonces llamó Isay a Abinadab, y lo hizo pasar delante de Samuel, el cual dijo: Tampoco a éste ha escogido Jehová.
9 Hizo luego pasar Isay a Samá. Y él dijo: Tampoco a éste ha elegido Jehová.
10 E hizo pasar Isay siete hijos suyos delante de Samuel; pero Samuel dijo a Isay: Jehová no ha elegido a éstos.
11 Entonces dijo Samuel a Isay: ¿Son éstos todos tus hijos? Y él respondió: Queda aún el menor, que apacienta las ovejas. Y dijo Samuel a Isay: Envía por él, porque no nos sentaremos a la mesa hasta que él venga aquí.
12 Envió, pues, por él, y le hizo entrar; y era rubio, hermoso de ojos, y de buena presencia. Entonces Jehová dijo: Levántate y úngelo, porque éste es.
13 Y Samuel tomó el cuerno del aceite, y lo ungió en medio de sus hermanos; y desde aquel día en adelante el Espíritu de Jehová vino sobre David. Se levantó luego Samuel, y se volvió a Ramá.
David toca para Saúl
14 El Espíritu de Jehová se había apartado de Saúl, y le atormentaba un espíritu malo de parte de Jehová.
15 Y los criados de Saúl le dijeron: He aquí ahora, un espíritu malo de parte de Dios te atormenta.
16 Diga, pues, nuestro señor a tus siervos que están delante de ti, que busquen a alguno que sepa tocar el arpa, para que cuando esté sobre ti el espíritu malo de parte de Dios, él taña con su mano, y tengas alivio.
17 Y Saúl respondió a sus criados: Buscadme, pues, ahora alguno que toque bien, y traédmelo.
18 Entonces uno de los criados respondió diciendo: He aquí yo he visto a un hijo de Isay de Belén, que sabe tocar, y es valiente y vigoroso y hombre de guerra, prudente en sus palabras, y hermoso, y Jehová está con él.
19 Y Saúl envió mensajeros a Isay, diciendo: Envíame a David tu hijo, el que está con las ovejas.
20 Y tomó Isay un asno cargado de pan, una vasija de vino y un cabrito, y lo envió a Saúl por medio de David su hijo.
21 Y viniendo David a Saúl, se quedó a su servicio; Saúl le cobró mucho afecto, y le hizo paje de armas.
22 Y Saúl envió a decir a Isay: Yo te ruego que esté David conmigo, pues ha hallado gracia en mis ojos.
23 Y cuando el espíritu malo de parte de Dios venía sobre Saúl, David tomaba el arpa y tocaba con su mano; y Saúl tenía alivio y estaba mejor, y el espíritu malo se apartaba de él.

16 El Señor dijo a Samuel:
—¿Cuánto tiempo vas a quedarte llorando por Saúl, si ya lo he rechazado como rey de Israel? Mejor llena de aceite tu cuerno y ponte en camino. Voy a enviarte a Belén, a la casa de Isaí, pues he escogido como rey a uno de sus hijos.
2 —¿Y cómo voy a ir? —respondió Samuel—. Si Saúl llega a enterarse, me matará.
—Lleva una ternera —dijo el Señor—, y diles que vas a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. 3 Invita a Isaí al sacrificio y entonces te explicaré lo que debes hacer, pues ungirás para mi servicio a quien yo te diga.
4 Samuel hizo lo que el Señor mandó. Pero cuando llegó a Belén, los jefes del pueblo lo recibieron con mucho temor.
—¿Vienes en son de paz? —preguntaron.
5 —Claro que sí. He venido a ofrecerle al Señor un sacrificio. Conságrense y vengan conmigo para tomar parte en él.
Entonces Samuel consagró a Isaí y a sus hijos, y los invitó al sacrificio.
6 Cuando llegaron, Samuel se fijó en Eliab y pensó: «Sin duda que este es el ungido del Señor». 7 Pero el Señor dijo a Samuel:
—No te dejes impresionar por su apariencia ni por su estatura, pues yo lo he rechazado. La gente se fija en las apariencias, pero yo me fijo en el corazón.
8 Entonces Isaí llamó a Abinadab para presentárselo a Samuel, pero Samuel dijo:
—A este no lo ha escogido el Señor.
9 Luego le presentó a Sama y Samuel repitió:
—Tampoco a este lo ha escogido el Señor.
10 Isaí le presentó a siete de sus hijos, pero Samuel dijo:
—El Señor no ha escogido a ninguno de ellos. 11 ¿Son estos todos tus hijos?
—Queda el más pequeño —respondió Isaí—, pero está cuidando el rebaño.
—Manda a buscarlo —insistió Samuel—, que no podemos continuar hasta que él llegue.
12 Isaí mandó a buscarlo y se lo trajeron. Era buen mozo, pelirrojo y de buena presencia. El Señor dijo a Samuel:
—Este es; levántate y úngelo.
13 Samuel tomó el cuerno de aceite y ungió al joven en presencia de sus hermanos. Entonces el Espíritu del Señor vino con poder sobre David, y desde ese día estuvo con él. Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá.
David al servicio de Saúl
14 El Espíritu del Señor se apartó de Saúl y en su lugar el Señor envió un espíritu maligno para que lo atormentara. 15 Sus servidores dijeron:
—Como usted se dará cuenta, un espíritu maligno de parte de Dios lo está atormentando. 16 Así que ordene usted a estos siervos suyos que busquen a alguien que sepa tocar el arpa. Así, cuando lo ataque el espíritu maligno de parte de Dios, el músico tocará y usted se sentirá mejor.
17 —Bien —respondió Saúl—, consíganme un buen músico y tráiganlo.
18 Uno de los cortesanos sugirió:
—Conozco a un muchacho que sabe tocar el arpa. Es valiente, hábil guerrero, sabe expresarse y es de buena presencia. Además, el Señor está con él. Su padre es Isaí, el de Belén.
19 Entonces Saúl envió unos mensajeros a Isaí para decirle: «Mándame a tu hijo David, el que cuida del rebaño». 20 Isaí tomó un asno, alimento, un odre de vino y un cabrito, y se los envió a Saúl por medio de su hijo David.
21 Cuando David llegó, se puso al servicio de Saúl, quien lo llegó a apreciar mucho y lo hizo su escudero. 22 Luego Saúl mandó este mensaje a Isaí: «Permite que David se quede a mi servicio, pues me ha causado muy buena impresión».
23 Cada vez que el espíritu de parte de Dios atormentaba a Saúl, David tomaba su arpa y tocaba. La música calmaba a Saúl, lo hacía sentirse mejor y el espíritu maligno se apartaba de él.

Samuel Anoints David as King
16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from ruling over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have chosen a king for Myself from among his sons.”
2 Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.”
And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you will do. And you will anoint for Me him whom I tell to you.”
4 Samuel did that which the Lord spoke, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, “Do you come in peace?”
5 And he said, “I have come in peace to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and called them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab, and said, “Surely the anointed of the Lord is before Him.”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees. For man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 So Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are these all your young men?”
And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is shepherding the flock.”
Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes here.”
12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy with beautiful eyes and a good appearance.
And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
David Serves Saul
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul and an evil spirit from the Lord terrified him.
15 So the servants of Saul said to him, “See, an evil spirit from God troubles you. 16 Let our lord now tell your servants, who are before you, that they might seek out a man experienced in playing the lyre. And it will come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is on you, that he will play with his hand, and you will be well.”
17 Saul said to his servants, “Find me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.”
18 Then one from the servants answered, and said, “I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is experienced in playing music, a mighty man of valor, a man of battle, and skillful in words, even a man of fine appearance. And the Lord is with him.”
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” 20 Jesse took a donkey laden with bread, a bottle of wine, and a young goat and he sent them with his son David to Saul.
21 David came to Saul, and stood before him. And Saul loved him greatly and he became his armor bearer. 22 Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.”
23 It happened that when the evil spirit from God came on Saul, David would take the lyre in his hand and play. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
