David Anointed King

16 The Lord said to Samuel, ^(A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since ^(B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? ^(C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, ^(D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

¹¹ Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, ^(A)“There remains yet the youngest,^[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, ^(B)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” ¹² And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ^(C)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, ^(D)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” ¹³ Then Samuel took ^(E)the horn of oil ^(F)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. ^(G)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

² In times past, when Saul was king over us, ^(A)it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, ^(B)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince^[a] over Israel.’” ³ So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, ^(C)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron ^(D)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. ⁴ David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and ^(E)he reigned forty years. ^5 (F)At Hebron he reigned over Judah ^(G)seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.^[b]
