16 The Lord said to Samuel, (A)“How long will you grieve over Saul, since (B)I have rejected him from being king over Israel? (C)Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, (D)for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”

11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, (A)“There remains yet the youngest,[a] but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, (B)“Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was (C)ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, (D)“Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took (E)the horn of oil (F)and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. (G)And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.

And the Lord said to you, (B)‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince[a] over Israel.’” 3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, (C)and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron (D)before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and (E)he reigned forty years. 5 (F)At Hebron he reigned over Judah (G)seven years and six months, and at Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years.[b]
