Saúl desobedece y es desechado
15 Un día Samuel dijo a Saúl:
—Jehová me envió a que te ungiera rey sobre su pueblo Israel; ahora, pues, escucha las palabras de Jehová. 2 Así ha dicho Jehová de los ejércitos: “Yo castigaré lo que Amalec hizo a Israel, cortándole el camino cuando subía de Egipto. 3 Ve, pues, hiere a Amalec, destruye todo lo que tiene y no te apiades de él; mata hombres, mujeres y niños, aun los de pecho, y vacas, ovejas, camellos y asnos.”
4 Saúl convocó, pues, al pueblo y les pasó revista en Telaim: doscientos mil de a pie y diez mil hombres de Judá. 5 Vino Saúl a la ciudad de Amalec y se emboscó en el valle. 6 Entonces dijo Saúl a los ceneos:
«Idos, apartaos y salid de entre los de Amalec, para que no os destruya juntamente con ellos; porque vosotros mostrasteis misericordia a todos los hijos de Israel cuando subían de Egipto.»
Se apartaron los ceneos de entre los hijos de Amalec. 7 Y Saúl derrotó a los amalecitas desde Havila hasta llegar a Shur, que está al oriente de Egipto. 8 Capturó vivo a Agag, rey de Amalec, y a todo el pueblo lo mató a filo de espada. 9 Pero Saúl y el pueblo perdonaron a Agag, y a lo mejor de las ovejas y del ganado mayor, de los animales engordados, de los carneros y de todo lo bueno, y no lo quisieron destruir; pero destruyeron todo lo que era vil y despreciable.
10 Vino luego esta palabra de Jehová a Samuel:
11 «Me pesa haber hecho rey a Saúl, porque se ha apartado de mí y no ha cumplido mis palabras.»
Se apesadumbró Samuel y clamó a Jehová toda aquella noche. 12 Madrugó Samuel para ir al encuentro de Saúl por la mañana; y avisaron a Samuel: «Saúl llega a Carmel y se ha erigido un monumento; después se dio vuelta y siguió adelante para bajar a Gilgal.» 13 Vino, pues, Samuel a Saúl, y Saúl le dijo:
—Bendito seas tú de Jehová; yo he cumplido la palabra de Jehová.
14 —¿Pues qué balido de ovejas y bramido de vacas es éste que yo oigo con mis oídos? —preguntó entonces Samuel.
15 —De Amalec las han traído; porque el pueblo perdonó lo mejor de las ovejas y de las vacas, para sacrificarlas a Jehová tu Dios, pero lo demás lo destruimos —respondió Saúl.
16 Entonces dijo Samuel a Saúl:
—Déjame que te anuncie lo que Jehová me ha dicho esta noche.
—Habla —le respondió él.
17 Y dijo Samuel:
—Aunque a tus propios ojos eras pequeño, ¿no has sido hecho jefe de las tribus de Israel, y Jehová te ha ungido rey sobre Israel? 18 Jehová te envió en misión y te ha dicho: “Ve, destruye a los pecadores de Amalec y hazles guerra hasta que los acabes.” 19 ¿Por qué, pues, no has oído la voz de Jehová? ¿Por qué te has lanzado sobre el botín y has hecho lo malo ante los ojos de Jehová?
20 Saúl respondió a Samuel:
—Al contrario, ¡he obedecido la voz de Jehová! Fui a la misión que Jehová me envió, traje a Agag, rey de Amalec, y he destruido a los amalecitas. 21 Pero el pueblo tomó del botín ovejas y vacas, lo mejor del anatema, para ofrecer sacrificios a Jehová, tu Dios, en Gilgal.
22 Entonces Samuel dijo:
—¿Acaso se complace Jehová tanto en los holocaustos y sacrificios
como en la obediencia a las palabras de Jehová?
Mejor es obedecer que sacrificar;
prestar atención mejor es que la grasa de los carneros.
23 Como pecado de adivinación es la rebelión,
como ídolos e idolatría la obstinación.
Por cuanto rechazaste la palabra de Jehová,
también él te ha rechazado para que no seas rey.
24 Saúl dijo a Samuel:
—He pecado, pues he desobedecido el mandamiento de Jehová y tus palabras, porque temí al pueblo y consentí a la voz de ellos. Perdona, pues, ahora mi pecado. 25 Vuelve conmigo para que adore a Jehová.
26 —No volveré contigo, porque rechazaste la palabra de Jehová y Jehová te ha rechazado para que no seas rey sobre Israel —respondió Samuel a Saúl.
27 Samuel se volvió para irse, pero él se asió de la punta de su manto, y éste se desgarró. 28 Entonces Samuel le dijo:
—Jehová ha desgarrado hoy de ti el reino de Israel y lo ha dado a un prójimo tuyo mejor que tú. 29 Además, el que es la Gloria de Israel no mentirá ni se arrepentirá, porque no es hombre para que se arrepienta.
30 —Yo he pecado; pero te ruego que me honres delante de los ancianos de mi pueblo y delante de Israel, y que vuelvas conmigo para que adore a Jehová, tu Dios —dijo Saúl.
31 Volvió Samuel en compañía de Saúl, y adoró Saúl a Jehová.
32 Después dijo Samuel:
«Traedme a Agag, rey de Amalec.»
Agag vino hacia él alegremente. Y decía: «Ciertamente ya pasó la amargura de la muerte.»
33 Samuel dijo:
«Como tu espada dejó a las mujeres sin hijos, así tu madre quedará privada de su hijo entre las mujeres.»
Entonces Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag delante de Jehová en Gilgal. 34 Se fue luego Samuel a Ramá, y Saúl subió a su casa en Gabaa de Saúl. 35 Nunca más vio Samuel a Saúl en toda su vida. Y lloraba Samuel por Saúl, porque Jehová se había arrepentido de haberlo hecho rey de Israel.

Dios rechaza a Saúl
15 Samuel le dijo a Saúl:
«Dios me envió para que yo te nombrara rey de su pueblo. Ahora me ha enviado a darte este mensaje: 2-3 “Cuando los israelitas salieron de Egipto, los amalecitas los trataron muy mal. Por eso ahora voy a castigarlos. Anda, ataca a los amalecitas y destruye todo lo que tienen. Mata a hombres, mujeres y niños, y a sus toros, ovejas, camellos y burros. No le perdones la vida a nadie”».
4 Saúl reunió a su ejército en Telaim. Contó a todos sus hombres, y eran doscientos mil soldados de infantería, sin contar a los diez mil hombres de Judá que se le unieron. 5 Se dirigió a la ciudad principal de Amalec para atacarla, y acampó junto a un arroyo. 6 Desde allí les mandó este mensaje a los quenitas: «¡Aléjense de los amalecitas! ¡Salgan de esa ciudad! Cuando nuestro pueblo salió de Egipto, ustedes nos trataron muy bien; por eso no quiero que ustedes mueran junto con los amalecitas».
7 Luego Saúl atacó todo el territorio de Amalec, desde Havilá hasta Sur, que está al este de Egipto. 8-9 Mató a toda la gente de Amalec, y a todos los animales débiles y de poco valor. Sólo dejó vivo al rey Agag y a los mejores animales de los amalecitas.
10 Entonces Dios le dijo a Samuel: 11 «Saúl no me hace caso ni me obedece. ¡Lamento haberlo hecho rey!»
Al oír esto, Samuel se preocupó mucho y se pasó toda la noche rogándole a Dios que perdonara a Saúl. 12 Cuando ya estaba amaneciendo, Samuel se levantó y se fue a buscar a Saúl, pero le dijeron que se había ido a Carmel para levantar un monumento en su honor, y que de allí se había ido a Guilgal.
13 Samuel se fue a buscarlo, y cuando lo encontró, Saúl le dijo:
—¡Que Dios te bendiga! Ya cumplí con las órdenes de Dios.
14 Samuel le preguntó:
—Si en verdad las has cumplido, ¿de quién son esas ovejas y esos toros?
15 Y Saúl le respondió:
—Son los mejores animales que los soldados les quitaron a los amalecitas. Los trajeron para presentárselos como ofrenda a nuestro Dios. Todo lo demás lo destruimos.
16 Pero Samuel se enojó y le dijo a Saúl:
—¡Silencio! Ahora voy a decirte lo que Dios me dijo anoche.
—¿Qué fue lo que te dijo? —preguntó Saúl.
17 Y Samuel le contestó:
—Aunque tú mismo reconocías que no valías gran cosa, Dios te hizo rey de Israel. 18 Luego, Dios te ordenó claramente que destruyeras a los amalecitas y todo lo que les pertenecía. 19 ¿Por qué desobedeciste sus órdenes? ¿Por qué te quedaste con lo mejor del ganado de los amalecitas?
20 Y Saúl respondió:
—Yo estoy seguro de haber obedecido a Dios. Lo que me ordenó hacer, lo hice. Acabé con todos los amalecitas, y al único que dejé con vida fue al rey Agag. 21 Los soldados, por su parte, trajeron los mejores animales de los amalecitas para sacrificarlos en honor de nuestro Dios.
22 Pero Samuel le dijo:
«A Dios le agrada más que lo obedezcan,
y no que le traigan ofrendas.
Es mejor obedecerlo
que ofrecerle los mejores animales.
23 »Rebelarse contra Dios es tan malo
como consultar a brujos y a adivinos.
No está bien adorar a dioses falsos,
ni tampoco desobedecer a Dios.
Como tú no quieres nada con él,
Dios tampoco quiere nada contigo».
24 Saúl le dijo a Samuel:
—Tienes razón. Mi pecado ha sido no obedecer a Dios. Pero es que tuve miedo de los soldados; por eso los dejé hacer lo que querían. 25 ¡Por favor, perdóname y acompáñame a adorar a Dios!
26 Pero Samuel le respondió:
—Dios ya no quiere que seas rey, porque no quisiste hacer lo que te mandó. Así que yo no te voy a acompañar.
27 Luego Samuel le dio la espalda a Saúl y empezó a alejarse. Pero Saúl agarró a Samuel por el manto, y de un tirón se lo arrebató. 28 Entonces Samuel le dijo:
—Así es como Dios te va a arrebatar el reino de Israel, para dárselo a un israelita mejor que tú. 29 El Dios que le da la victoria a Israel siempre cumple su palabra, no cambia de opinión, como lo hace la gente.
30 Saúl le rogó:
—Reconozco mi pecado pero, por favor, ¡trátame como rey delante de los jefes del pueblo y de toda la gente! ¡Ven conmigo y hagamos un culto para adorar a Dios!
31 Samuel aceptó ir con Saúl, y los dos adoraron a Dios. 32 Luego, Samuel ordenó: «¡Tráiganme a Agag, el rey de los amalecitas!»
Mientras lo llevaban ante Samuel, Agag pensó que ya no lo iban a matar. 33 Pero Samuel dijo: «Así como muchas mujeres sufrieron cuando mataste a sus hijos, así también va a sufrir tu madre, pues te voy a matar».
Y allí mismo en Guilgal, en presencia de Dios, Samuel cortó en pedazos a Agag. 34 Luego Samuel regresó a Ramá, y Saúl se fue a Guibeá, que era donde vivía. 35 Samuel jamás volvió a ver a Saúl, aunque siempre sintió por él una gran tristeza. Y también a Dios le causó pesar el haber puesto a Saúl como rey de Israel.

15 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.
8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,
11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.
12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord.
14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord.
26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.
27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.
28 And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.
29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.
31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord.
32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.
33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.
35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
