Saul Defeats the Amalekites but Spares Their King
15 Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel; now therefore listen to the words of the Lord.(A) 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts: I will punish the Amalekites for what they did in opposing the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.(B) 3 Now go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.”(C)
4 So Saul summoned the people and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand soldiers of Judah. 5 Saul came to the city of the Amalekites and lay in wait in the valley. 6 Saul said to the Kenites, “Go! Leave! Withdraw from among the Amalekites, or I will destroy you with them, for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites withdrew from the Amalekites.(D) 7 Saul defeated the Amalekites, from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt.(E) 8 He took King Agag of the Amalekites alive but utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.(F) 9 Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the cattle and of the fatted calves,[a] and the lambs, and all that was valuable and would not utterly destroy them; all that was despised and worthless they utterly destroyed.(G)
Saul Rejected as King
10 The word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret that I made Saul king, for he has turned back from following me and has not carried out my commands.” Samuel was angry, and he cried out to the Lord all night.(H) 12 Samuel rose early in the morning to meet Saul, and Samuel was told, “Saul went to Carmel, where he set up a monument for himself, and on returning he passed on down to Gilgal.”(I) 13 When Samuel came to Saul, Saul said to him, “May you be blessed by the Lord; I have carried out the command of the Lord.”(J) 14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears and the lowing of cattle that I hear?” 15 Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and the cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but the rest we have utterly destroyed.”(K) 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.” He replied, “Speak.”
17 Samuel said, “Though you are little in your own eyes, are you not the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel.(L) 18 And the Lord sent you on a mission and said, ‘Go, utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are consumed.’(M) 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord? Why did you swoop down on the spoil and do what was evil in the sight of the Lord?”(N) 20 Saul said to Samuel, “I have obeyed the voice of the Lord. I have gone on the mission on which the Lord sent me. I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.(O) 21 But from the spoil the people took sheep and cattle, the best of the things devoted to destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God in Gilgal.”(P) 22 And Samuel said,
“Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as in obedience to the voice of the Lord?
Surely, to obey is better than sacrifice
and to heed than the fat of rams.(Q)
23 For rebellion is no less a sin than divination,
and stubbornness is like iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,
he has also rejected you from being king.”(R)
24 Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord and your words because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.(S) 25 Now therefore, I pray, pardon my sin, and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord.” 26 Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you, for you have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.”(T) 27 As Samuel turned to go away, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore.(U) 28 And Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you this very day and has given it to a neighbor of yours who is better than you.(V) 29 Moreover, the Glory of Israel will not deceive or change his mind, for he is not a mortal, that he should change his mind.”(W) 30 Then Saul[b] said, “I have sinned; yet honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel, and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.”(X) 31 So Samuel turned back after Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring Agag king of the Amalekites here to me.” And Agag came to him haltingly.[c] Agag said, “Surely death is bitter.”[d] 33 Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so your mother shall be childless among women.”
And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.(Y)
34 Then Samuel went to Ramah, and Saul went up to his house in Gibeah of Saul.(Z) 35 Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, but Samuel grieved over Saul. And the Lord was sorry that he had made Saul king over Israel.(AA)

15 Samuel disse a Saul:
—O SENHOR me enviou para ungi-lo como rei sobre o seu povo Israel. Agora ouça a sua mensagem. 2 O SENHOR Todo-Poderoso diz: “Quando os israelitas saíram do Egito, os amalequitas trataram de impedir que fossem a Canaã. Eu vi o que fizeram os amalequitas. 3 Agora vá e enfrente os amalequitas, destrua-os completamente com todos os seus bens. Não deixe nada com vida: mate os homens, as mulheres, as crianças e os recém-nascidos, bois e ovelhas e todos os seus camelos e burros”.
4 Saul reuniu o exército em Telaim. Eram 200.000 soldados de infantaria e 10.000 soldados de Judá. 5 Depois se dirigiram à cidade de Amaleque e esperaram no vale. 6 Saul disse aos queneus:
—Afastem-se dos amalequitas para que não os destrua junto com eles. Vocês foram bons com os israelitas quando saíram do Egito.
Então os queneus se afastaram dos amalequitas.
7 Saul lutou contra os amalequitas, os perseguiu desde Havilá até Sur, perto da fronteira do Egito, e os derrotou. 8 Saul capturou vivo Agague, rei dos amalequitas. Saul lhe perdoou a vida, mas matou o seu povo. 9 Saul e seus soldados se sentiram mal por terem destruído tudo, então perdoaram a vida de Agague, e ficaram com o melhor do gado, as melhores ovelhas e os carneiros. Ficaram com tudo o que tinha valor e destruíram o que não tinha muito valor.
10 Depois Samuel recebeu a palavra do SENHOR:
11 —Saul deixou de me seguir. Eu estou arrependido de tê-lo nomeado rei porque não me obedece.
Samuel ficou muito chateado e clamou ao SENHOR durante toda a noite. 12 Na manhã seguinte, bem cedo, Samuel foi ver a Saul, mas o povo disse a Samuel:
—Saul foi para Carmelo. Ali ele fará um monumento em honra de si mesmo. Depois disso ele irá a vários lugares e por fim irá a Gilgal.
Então Samuel foi aonde estava Saul e o encontrou oferecendo, daquilo que havia tomado dos amalequitas, um sacrifício que deve ser queimado completamente ao SENHOR.[a] 13 Samuel se aproximou de Saul e este o cumprimentou assim:
—Que o SENHOR o abençoe! Obedeci aos mandamentos do SENHOR.
14 Mas Samuel disse:
—Então, o que é esse barulho? Por que eu ouço o barulho de ovelhas e de gado?
15 Saul respondeu:
—Os soldados os tomaram dos amalequitas e ficaram com o melhor para sacrificá-los ao SENHOR, seu Deus, mas destruímos todo o resto.
16 Samuel disse a Saul:
—Espere! Deixe-me dizer o que o SENHOR me disse essa noite.
Saul respondeu:
—Está bem, diga-me o que lhe disse.
17 Samuel disse:
—Antes o considerava alguém sem importância, mas depois você se tornou o líder das tribos de Israel. O SENHOR o escolheu como rei de Israel. 18 O SENHOR o enviou em uma missão e lhe disse: “Vá e destrua todos os amalequitas porque são malvados. Lute contra eles até destruí-los completamente”. 19 Por que não obedeceu ao SENHOR mas permaneceu com o despojo fazendo o que não é do agrado do SENHOR?
20 Saul respondeu:
—Sim obedeci ao SENHOR! Fui para onde o SENHOR me enviou e destruí os amalequitas, trouxe o rei Agague 21 e os soldados tomaram as melhores ovelhas e gado para sacrificar ao SENHOR, seu Deus, em Gilgal.
22 Mas Samuel disse:
—O que agrada mais ao SENHOR: sacrifícios ou obediência aos seus mandamentos? É melhor obedecer do que oferecer sacrifícios. É melhor obedecer do que oferecer a gordura dos carneiros. 23 Recusar-se a obedecê-lo é tão mau quanto a feitiçaria. Ser teimoso e fazer a vontade própria é como o pecado de pedir conselho às estátuas de ancestrais. Você se recusou a obedecer à ordem do SENHOR, por isso ele agora se recusa a aceitar você como rei.
24 Então Saul disse a Samuel:
—Pequei. Não obedeci aos mandamentos do SENHOR nem fiz o que me disse. Tive medo do povo e lhes fiz caso. 25 Agora peço a você que me perdoe por haver pecado. Venha comigo para que faça culto ao SENHOR.
26 Mas Samuel disse a Saul:
—Não regressarei com você. Da mesma forma como você rejeitou a ordem do SENHOR, ele também rejeita você como rei de Israel.
27 Quando Samuel se virou para partir, Saul agarrou a borda do manto, e este se rasgou. 28 Então Samuel disse a Saul:
—Hoje mesmo o SENHOR rasgou de você o reino de Israel. Este será dado a um dos seus amigos que é melhor que você. 29 Deus, que é a Glória de Israel, vive para sempre. Não mente nem muda de ideia. Não é como os homens que mudam de opinião.
30 Saul respondeu:
—Está bem, pequei! Mas por favor, volte comigo. Demonstre-me algo de respeito diante dos líderes e do povo de Israel. Volte comigo para que possa adorar ao SENHOR, seu Deus.
31 Samuel regressou com Saul e este adorou ao SENHOR. 32 Depois Samuel disse:
—Tragam-me Agague, o rei dos amalequitas.
Trouxeram-no aprisionado, mas muito tranquilo, pois estava certo que Samuel não o mataria.[b] 33 Mas Samuel disse a Agague:
—Como com sua espada tirou os filhos de muitas mães, agora sua mãe ficará sem filho.
E ali mesmo o despedaçou diante do SENHOR.
34 Depois Samuel regressou a Ramá e Saul foi para sua casa em Gibeá. 35 Samuel sentia grande tristeza por Saul e nunca mais voltou a vê-lo. O SENHOR se arrependeu de ter feito a Saul rei de Israel.

15 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord.
2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.
3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.
5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.
6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.
7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.
8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.
9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
10 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,
11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.
12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.
13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord: I have performed the commandment of the Lord.
14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.
16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.
17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?
18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.
19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord?
20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord, and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.
21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.
22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.
25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord.

29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.
30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.
31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord.
32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King
15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint(A) you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord. 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites(B) for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally(C) destroy[a] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”
4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6 Then he said to the Kenites,(D) “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.
7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites(E) all the way from Havilah to Shur,(F) near the eastern border of Egypt. 8 He took Agag(G) king of the Amalekites alive,(H) and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9 But Saul and the army spared(I) Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves[b] and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.
10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret(J) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned(K) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.”(L) Samuel was angry,(M) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.
12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel.(N) There he has set up a monument(O) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”
13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.”
14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”
15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”
16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”
“Tell me,” Saul replied.
17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small(P) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord? Why did you pounce on the plunder(Q) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord?”
20 “But I did obey(R) the Lord,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”
22 But Samuel replied:
“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord?
To obey is better than sacrifice,(S)
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,(T)
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected(U) the word of the Lord,
he has rejected you as king.”
24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned.(V) I violated(W) the Lord’s command and your instructions. I was afraid(X) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive(Y) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord.”
26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected(Z) the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”
27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe,(AA) and it tore.(AB) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn(AC) the kingdom(AD) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you.(AE) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie(AF) or change(AG) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”
30 Saul replied, “I have sinned.(AH) But please honor(AI) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord.
32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”
Agag came to him in chains.[c] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
33 But Samuel said,
“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.”(AJ)
And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.
34 Then Samuel left for Ramah,(AK) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah(AL) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel(AM) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned(AN) for him. And the Lord regretted(AO) that he had made Saul king over Israel.
